No. This method gives a recovery that could allow the phone to get bricked. It is no longer supported
OP, please read "[ref] read before rooting" in my signature first.

really? do you believe that you're the first person to ask for a rooting guide? you're not, which means you shouldn't have posted, but instead followed one of the guides on xda, which are easily found. hell, there's a link on the section list page.

Depends when you rooted. The bug was only identified in November and fixes only released in January
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 4 Beta

Really you should follow an xda guide, no point in linking to another site....if you have a query about their method you should address them, I can guarantee their method is copy/paste or rewrite of an xda post anyway.

Hi there,
You might want to check out samsung galaxy III toolkit here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1703488.
It is a fairly easy to understand command tool which will root your phone and also install custom recovery (which is essential IMO if you want to try different ROMs later on).

If i use cf root to root my galaxy s3 i9300 will i be able to flash a custom rom? It says that the cf root was intended to be used with stock firmware in the main thread. Also how safe is it? If i follow the steps exactly as instructed what are the chances the phone will brick?
Thanks

Yes you will.
It means it is meant to be used to root a stock Rom, after that you can do what you like. Cf root is extremely safe if you follow the instructions, which are very simple. If you do that you won't brick your phone

Thanks for your quick reply. I have one more question though. Does it matter that my phone is locked and carrier branded? I always thought it had to be fully unlocked and unbranded to root and stuff. Thanks!

No, you only need to unlock if you want to use a different network, won't affect it otherwise
My question is after rooting and not changing anything else will you still be able to get the updates. I remember with the bionic I cou ld but not with the tbolt.
are you carrier branded as in US Carrier branded or something else?
If you're talking about a US Carrier branded phone, then you're in the wrong place. This is specifically for the i9300, not any other version. There are appropriate forums for your specific phone.
If you do have the i9300, then do as slaphead says. you're all set.

Oopsie daisy.... I could've sworn I read the whole thread from start to end.. Not sure how I missed that..
I think the word "carrier branded" set of red flags in my head since I was only recently reading about someone who tried to flash an i9300 rom with their sprint s3.
just wanted to make sure and not have to see another brick.

Have a look here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487, if you want to flash the ROM yourself with Odin.
Alternatively you can try to let Kies update the firmware, if it recognizes your phone.
Or try OTA update driectly on your phone.
Good luck !
P.S.: As I like to have always the newest ROM and need root for some apps, I recommend to flash latest pre-rooted ROM from here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608071. But it's your choice.

Have a look at that noobs topics. This is the 3rd time youve helped him and its in one ear and out the other.
You post a link and he asks if he needs to be rooted.Just shows he cant be bothered reading it when it says you dont need to be rooted.
He is obviously not prepared to read the rules nor read guides in his own time.
So can someone please report him to Crachel/any moderator.

Right enniocharchar, i have locked your other 3 threads asking the same question as you are here, may i point out that you can only start one thread to ask a question, asking the same question across multiple is against XDA rules and with this question being a simple how to root your phone question a simple search would have found you all the answers needed.

Please advise on rooting

Sorry to join the chorus of noobs asking for rooting advice when there are vids and threads galore, but I am finding this all confusing.
I have got my new S3 from the UK network Three, it is of the following spec:
Model Number = GT-I9300
Android Version = 4.0.4
Baseband version = I9300XXLH1
I would be grateful if someone could advise me of the simplest method I should use for rooting as I am confused.
I would love to also hear any suggestions on custom roms but obviously that is a secondary request!
Thanks to anyone who wouldn't mind advising me! :silly:
read the stickies in the general i9300 forum. All your questions will be answered there (including a step bu step rooting guide)
the only way that you can mess it up is if you think you're smarter than the guide and not follow it properly.

Thank you very much for your reply, unfortunately that method does not have the build version of my phone (IMM76D.I9300XXBLG8) on the list (it has XXBLG9 though lol).
Going to try XXBLG9 as it seems this is the suggestion in the tools thread. It is funny how in all these noob proof threads I follow to root my devices I always end up taking leaps of faith! I wish I had more acumen for this stuff!
Thank you very much for putting me on the right track all the same, I appreciate it!

[Q] A guide for noobs for going from stock P769 Optimus L9 to Cyanogenmod?

Hey, sorry if this is the wrong section/wrong etiquette/wrong me. All the information on rooting and flashing and everything for this device seems to be scattered all over the place, any chance someone could make a guide on everything I should do to go from a stock, unrooted Jelly Bean T-Mobile P769 to having Cyanogenmod installed?
Thanks a whole lot.

The Mega is my 3rd device while a member here, but folks here with the Note are the best and very knowledgeable. Just need some patience sometimes. I know it can be tough.

Pay close attention to steps 16-17. Good Luck.
After this update to the newest recovery- cwm or TWRP (making sure you get the working versions for our device) and the development forums are your oyster so to speak.
Edit: Sometimes just flashing a superuser app will do the trick if this is your only issue, but if you came from stock this is how I started back in the day.
Edit: Some ROMs also require root access in developer options set to "apps and adb".
