Hi. Not sure if this is the right section to post my question and I hope someone can help. I have the 3g flyer with Globatron's stock honeycomb. I also run my backup pro. I just noticed that my backup pro is complaining that my busybox is outdated. How do I go about updating my busybox? Can I just use one of the busybox installers available on the market? I really don't want to brick my device, so any help would be most appreciated.

Definitely the wrong section. Questions belong in Q&A. Report your thread so the mods can move, then I'll give you an answer.

Well, you didn't report the thread to get it moved, so I did that for you.
To answer your question, just use one of the Busybox installers on the Play Market to update Busybox. The one by Stephen Stericson is the most popular, but the JRummy one works as well. I've used both on the Flyer.
Its pretty normal that things like Busyboc and SuperUser (or SuperSU) included on custom ROMs get outdated, as they often are updated more frequently then the ROMs (especially at this point for the Flyer). Keep them both updated, for the smoothest operation of your device.

Why is BusyBox needed, anyway? Does it help the device to handle the RAM or something like that? Is it really necessary to have it on an Android device?

Not an expert, but some apps need Busybox to work. Titanium is a big one.
In the Market description for the Stericson Busybox installer: Almost EVERY rooted applications needs BusyBox to perform their magic, if you have a rooted phone then you need BusyBox.

Hi,
I'm reading within this forum for a while now since I'm getting a SGS2 soon. All possibilities for rooting the device seem to require flashing a modified kernel and installing all the well-known root apps (superuser, busybox etc.).
My question is: Is there an app that is able to root the device by simply hit a button or something similar? I do not want to flash my new device, but wanted to test some root-requiring apps (Chainfire 3D, Titanium Backup). One candidade seems to be an app called z4root (available here at the devs), does anybody have experiences with that app?
Thanks and Cheers
Zap
No, you still need an insecure kernel...

You sure you are not looking at |SGS1 dev by mistake for z4root .

Hi all,
New to all this. Have performed a root using the instructions here. Thanks lyriquidperfection
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1125414
Seemed to work ok, just installed first insecure kernal on the list without matching to my kernal, it installed Superuser but not Busybox, so installed that from the market.
The reason I wanted to root it apart from 4.0.4(needs to be rooted?) coming soon was in the hope I could get shot of some of the locked apps Samsung and Google installed on it. Busybox looks to me that you need to know what you are doing to use it. So the question is is there anything simple I can use to get rid of the locked apps that I don't want?

check the link below for the same ma8
Spread Sheet of removable APPS
ps- read carefully the same to understand the apps importance and then remove it if its safe
Thanks Sun, that will help greatly
Wonder why they make it so complicated, most of the pre-installed stuff is a lot of tosh, then again so is the Market stuff
hey guys.
I gave my mom my Evo 3D, but before I did it I flashed a new custom rom from here that had 4.0.3 on it. I believe it was a nocturnal rom, not 100% sure now.
was having some difficulties with the APN settings and turns out I don't have "proper root".
superuser says it can gain root access (almost always) but fails when trying to install the latest binaries. busybox says binaries arent installed and that it can't install them.
I still have S-OFF, and I can still use Titanium Backup and Root Explorer to do things that require root.
what can I do to fix this without having to do a full root and losing all her files and settings?
thanks.
First things first, this belongs in q&a, not development

I have never heard of this before. So you are half rooted?
I don't think that's right. I would say make sure everything is saved on her sd card, format all partitions except sd card, and flash a more updated rom. Then try installing the latest binaries.
Edit: Make sure to use 4EXT recovery and nothing else to avoid problems.
it seems half root is right.
I did another check. su was in /system/xbin but the permissions weren't right, even though I had just fixed them.
I pushed a su from a rom I had I know was fine, and that didn't make a difference. all the files in /system/xbin had all permissions set, except su had all but the execute permissions. I change it to have all permissions...rebooted. now root explorer can't get root access. even though SuperUser says it can get root access and that it is succesfully updating the binaries.
what the?!
Dude, just flash a different rom. The post above yours seemed dead on and he took the time to help you even tho you posted in the wrong section. You could spend hours/days trying to sort this out, or just do a back up and flash a new rom and your must likely good to go.

Why dose this all ways happen

is this a known problem?
I'm fairly confident this was a Nocturnal rom, and a newer version of one I already had installed. I've flashed countless roms over the last two years and this is the first time this happens.
luckily, i'm on a Galaxy S3 now with no problems and full root. just want to figure it out for my mom so I can get her MMS working on MetroPCS

if you bother to check, I've been a member for way longer than all of you combined and have posted more than all of you as well. maybe the rules have changed lately, but I KNOW that posts in the Dev section are answered more rapidly, which I needed a fast answer, AND are seen by Devs, who rarely go in the Q&A section.
but my question was answered. so thanks. I'll download a new rom and flash that when I get a chance.

Lulz! I'm guessing you learned as much about flashing in all your years on xda as you did about capitalization and grammar from that multitude of posts.

Okay then if you have been in here for such a long time how come you couldn't find out the answer for yourself and you should know that you should never post in the dev section unless you have a Rom or a mod </rant>

thanks, but i meant like in general, when I rooted my phone earlier there was a sticky noob guide how to root and the one's I have found are for Supersu and I'm used to Superuser. What are the differences?
Thread I'm referring to:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1707431
Supersu is developed by chain fire, superuser is developed by chainsdd
Diferences? UI mainly, I find supersu more eye-appealing, however it depends to the user...
Also there are other features by both, but are not that common...
i am facing a different kind of rooting problem
i have just rooted my my htc amaze and i am using 4.2.2 jb rom with everything working
but i installed Titanium backup and it is not working for me
it is showing a message that your fone is not rooted
but i have unlocked bootloader, super cid , s-off my fone
then why it is not working for me
does any one help me regarding this issue
Do you see supersu or superuser in your app drawer?
Install Super user and then you will have root access
Use one of the toolkits such as hasoon's or the Windroid one to flash the root binaries.
Or just re-flash the ROM.

It's not uncommon to root and not get busybox installed, which TB needs to do it's magic. If you open TB and click on the, "Problems" button it will install it's own busybox so it can work.
If you've solved this please post back so others know not to continue posting possible solutions like I, and others did
