Will Sammobile firmwares receive OTA? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

this may sound like an absolute NOOB Question but i had a rooted S3 and for some reason it was acting terrible
i therefore downloaded a stock firmware from sammobile and flashed it using odin
i was just wondering if i can still get OTA Updates or Kies
i ask this because when i connect it to kies it says "your device does not support upgrading through Kies" ( this is when using the USB cable that came with the phone, but if i use a USB cable that goes with any other phone it says "Current version Etc"
many thanks Jack

So are you some kind of a wizard ? he didnt state that he was using jellybean. ANY WAYS.
Op, if your using a stock firmware from sammobile then yes you will receive OTA updates.
EDIT : If your device doesn't get detected from kies you probably didn't choose the correct firmware for your phone or the CSC is wrong follow this video to restore it to completely http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=_8Tga_yKywc

You need to download the firmware for your region, then kies will detect your phone.

I flashed the firmware BTU, my S3 is an unlocked version, international and i flashed one of them (not JB)

Please jb now!!
Enviado desde mi GT-I9300 usando Tapatalk 2

I did the exact same thing. Flashed BTU then kies gave me the same error. You need to change your CSC to BTU also. Then you will be able to upgrade via kies or OTA. Be warned though changing the CSC causes a complete wipe of all data and apps etc.

I always just flash the generic UK FW and always get the OTA notification in the notification bar.

Another question:
I have a branded S3 (so not unlocked) and ive flashed the stock LH1 ROM to it, so now my CSC is unbranded (but matches my country)
so my question is, will i get OTA updates in the future?
After connecting to KIES i get the "this is the latest firmware version" message, so not the "your device does not support upgrading through Kies" message.
This means its OK?

I would stay with official kies updates if you are a noob. Try kies on another pc maybe or update the drivers.
If you really want to use other methods I'd search the forum for guides.
I wouldn't be a suitable candidate to advise you.

If you use the official firmware for your country, rooted or not, KIES will function normally. I wonder where a lot of the BS being written online about using KIES and rooting causing KIES not to work properly comes from.

Ok Thanks,I will read it..Do I need to be in download Mode to update my Firmware from Kies?

Phone repaired, did they root my phone?

I posted this question in another thread, though I never got a direct answer and didn't want to hijack the thread either.
A while back I had my phone repaired. I've never attempted to update my phone in all this time. I recently installed Kies and saw the following information:
PDA:KE1 / PHONE:KE4 / CSC:KD1 (XEU)
It says "This version of the device cannot be updated".
When I tried the "software update" via the phone, which then said a new firmware would have to be installed and if I'd like to download. I selected Yes and then the phone reboots. When it came back on it said that the update had failed and to try connect and do it through KIES. So I think there's an update available yet I can't do anything about it?
My phone details are:
Android Version: 2.3.3
Baseband Version: I9100XXKE4
Kernal Version: 2.6.35.7-I9100XWKE1-CL181974
[email protected] #2
Build Number: GINGERBREAD.XWKE1
Does the information from the Kernal Version indicate that they rooted my phone when they repaired it? If so, will there be a way of changing it back?
Thanks.
Does hboot say s-off or s-on?

no they will not root your phone as you are using kies to get official updates.
use odin and flash either generic roms which you will have to root yourself.
custom roms usually are rooted by the developer.
Does the information from the Kernal Version indicate that they rooted my phone
NO all its says is [email protected] which is part of the signature and nothing to do with rooting a phone ..
If Kies says no update for your phone then its usually correct .Phone provider has not updated firmware .

Kies says there's no update, however I'm asked to use Kies after a failed attempt to use the software update function of the phone. It says that there's a new firmware version available. I downloaded it and it asks to reboot my phone. When it starts up again it says the update has failed and to use Kies. I don't understand why it would say there's a new firmware available and yet I can't update it?

If the phone isn't rooted by them, why won't the software update allow me to update the new firmware that it says is available? It fails and asks me to do it through Kies where it says that my version of the phone cannot be updated?

Dude... You keep asking the same question. Although I cannot say why your phone is telling you that you have an update available and it is failing and saying to use KIES, I can reiterate what JJE mentioned and that is that it sounds like your carrier has NOT released an actual update for your device.
I recommend that you call your cell phone carrier and ask them if and when an update WILL be available and start from there. If they say that there IS an upadte available then you can ask your question again but until you know for sure you are just going around in circles.
the csc you have does cuurently support updates has they have not been released for that region.
try changing the csc to a country that has updates.

Neither kies nor Odin does the upgrade..samsung releases the upgrades..on kies you will have to wait for the updates to be pushed by Sammy..using Odin you can download the update from Sammobile/samsung-updates and update any time you want..
by the way..Odin will not mess with your phone if you perform the steps correctly..Kies took around 50 seconds on my PC to open up..Odin does that in 5 seconds...
though there are some advantages of kies as well..such as backup and recover but for me..Odin trumps Kies

WHAT?!?!
They are the exact same firmwares, kies is just one way of getting the exact same firmware that you get from samfirmware.com. THE EXACT SAME, JUST AS OFFICIAL.
In fact you can get more recent firmware from samfirmware than what you will get from kies. (If your CSC isn't BTU)
Forget about kies and use Odin.

Odin is simple, boot into download mode (vol down+home+power) connect to computer with Odin open (kies closed and removed from system tray) put package in PDA, make sure repartition is NOT ticked and press start.
If you use Odin properly it won't damage anything.
Yes, depending on how you unlocked it there is a chance it will be locked again, Samsung blocked the method that voodoo unlock uses in the updates after XXBLG1.

[Q] T-Mobile (EE) S3

I am sorry if this question has already been asked....
I have a UK T-mobile S3 - currently on Stock ICS (not rooted) and want to install Jelly Bean firmware on my phone as t-mobile will take another year before they release their version.
Can anyone tell me which 4.1 firmware i can load on my phone which will be safe without having to root etc? if you can direct me to the right place plz..
Will i still get OTA updates from t-mob or will i have to revert back to ICS to get the update...?
Many thanks
Any firmware can be used and you lose OTA and Kies updates .
Use UK JB makes most sense .

[Q] Change CSC, to get fresh updates - unbranded phone

Hi all,
I recently bought a Galaxy S3 I9300 International through a coupon (like groupon) and they sent me a Phone with CSC "COA" (cosmote, Romania)
Iinstalled my Italian sim without any issue, so i think the phone is unlocked or similar.
I noticed that the phone has the firmware XXEMC2 (March 2013?) and i want to install all new updates... but i think that Romania doesn't update regularly the official firmware (i don't see custom icons for the romanian firmware)
Is it advisable to flash the Italian Firmware (maybe the latest XXEMF6, or the actual XXEMC2), and change the CSC code to ITV to get newer updates soon?
Or i'm approaching to an unnecessary procedure that may brick my phone (or voiding the warranty?)
Thanks in advance!
Having the right CSC and unmodified status will allow you receive OTA updates, which will probably be six months behind those posted on xda.
Go to sammobile and download the latest rom for the country where you will be using the phone, flash using odin on your pc. This gives you the right modem and won't brick your phone.
Thanks for the reply.
Now i'm downloading the latest ITV firmware I9300XXEMG4_I9300ITVEMG2_ITV.zip from the site you specified (seems to be the one that Kies tries to install, since it has the icon highlighted.
Then, i need to flash the firmware twice in order to change the CSC Code, right?
Do i need to do other task, in order to have the "unmodified" status ?
Remember that the latest MG4 firmware alters the format of your efs folder. Have a look in the general section for more info.

Thanks, i'll download the same firmware i'm using now, but with CSC ITV (XXEMC2, March 2013)
Best go read the stickies in general before you flash anything, your logic on updating seems confused. The CSC code makes almost no difference to how you use the phone.

No, the firmware is irrelevant to the carrier. Only simlock is carrier specific, if your sim works then you can use any firmware.

I think i'm confused now
That's my noob point of view:
I unboxed the phone and installed my sim without any issue, so i think it's not simlocked.
I think that the Cosmote - Romania carrier (CSC "COA") doesn't release updates often (I don't see firmware XXEMF6 or the latest XXEMG4 (/efs issue apart)
I'm sticky with stock/original/samsung firmware XXEMC2 (march 2013)
if i flash the exact revision, but ITV, (since i'm italian) Firmware i can obtain all the fresh, unbranded, updates.
now... i don't know exactly the roll-out date policy for every firmware /country, and if any carrirer can/has to "customize" a firmware in order to release (with a delay, of course) And/Or if it's interested to release an update.
What i'm thinking now is "nice. an update... let's install." but i want to be more-than-sure that this simple procedure won't brick my phone.
Please be patient with me.

Anytime you flash anything you Risk bricking your phone and or voiding your warranty. The. Only official procedures for updating your firmware are kies and ota updates.
allright.. i flashed the ITV firmware adn it went OK
but now i see the correct CSC, and Kies says that my phone doesn't support updates.
I correctly flashed a second time, but with no result.
Any tips?
You can still update your firmware with kies. To do so you need to manually input model and serial numbers . also you have to put phone in download mode before connecting to computer.

i did this procedure (i told to Kies my model and S/N ) to factory reset the phone and Kies downloaded a Firmware.
it downloaded I9300XXEMC2 (the same) but with CSC I9300QXFEMA2 :silly:
Now my phone has a UGLY splash boot of "La Fleur" carrier!
Before this madness i had a, as far i know, a International S3 (CSC EMC1 (COA))... now i have a branded Phone!
(though my sim still works without issues)
What the hell has happened?
If you want ota updates or want to update by using kies than stay with this firmware. If you want the newest unbranded firmwares than flash with Odin any firmware you like that is compatible with I 9300. Make sure CSC matches your region. The lafleur screen is the boot animation which can be replaced manually if you root. You may be able to change csc with CSC changer app. Probably need root for that too. You can always reflash the firmware update you initially flashed and were happy with. Whatever kies gives you is what the phone was programmed initially for your phone. I think. I prefer to use sammobile and Odin as you can get more current firmwares
if you want to customize your phone by changing csc or flashing firmwares even official firmwares than do not use kies or ota for updating for updating. also since customization always risky it is best to back up your EFS. this too requires Root. PLEASE READ THE STICKIES . and the FAQs . before you proceed with flashing anything else. Right now your phone is official and upgradeable through kies.If you are not happy with what samsung gives you than I suggest you ROOT
