Complete noob, first root, few questions - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey guys, I love the EVOLTE so far, but sense is slowing it down way to much, so I'd like to get CM10 nightly on it. A few questions:
1) I'm on Hboot 1.9, so I assume I can't go S-OFF yet, can I install CM10 with S-ON?
2) What do I need to do first before I can reach these steps? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29417266&postcount=1397
3) From the CMX zip, all I need is the boot.img right?
4) This video seems to be what I need to do, but not knowing any of these terms is providing a stumbling block http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdHQsYhb-Fw&list=UU7YzoWkkb6woYwCnbWLn3ZA&index=60&feature=plcp
Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I apologize if my search through the forums didn't find the links I need.

1) Nope, you cant get S-OFF
2) Root the device?
3) Yes, fastboot flash your kernel (boot.img) http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte-all-things-root/606748-how-install-kernels-h-boot-1-15-a.html
You'll need to use HTC dev to root. Regawmods rooter might work as well

My best advice is to read the information posted, read the how to's and read threads where people have failed, this is the best way youre going to learn, videos can help but often times the person assumes you have some knowledge and that causes problems. dont youtube anything without learning what you can here

I honestly think the best guide on the net for what you need to know is posted here
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte...panda-s-htc-dev-ltevo-root-dummies-guide.html

I'm on hboot 1.9 s-on running synergy. What I did was first unlock the phone through HTC dev... Once unlocked I then dled twrp 2.2.0 and flashed the IMG through fastboot. After that did a nandroid backup and then flashed latest version of supersu through twrp to gain root access. I then dled Flash Image GUI (playstore app) which this helps for flashing kernals instead of doing through fastboot. When done flashing whatever kernal for watever Rom you choose which I'm sure cm10 you then go into recovery and flash the Rom like normal. One thing though I remember reading something about flashing a aosp or aokp kernal over a sense one could brick ur phone but look into that and you'll be all set. Hope it helps.

Unlocked Evo 3d and ICS Update...when it arrives lol

Hi, i have unlocked my Evo 3D using HTCDEV.com. I was wondering if it will be ok and safe to do the ICS OTA update when it arrives? Also could someone please advise me on my next steps to root my Evo 3D so i can use custom roms etc. All i have managed to do is up to yet is unlock my handset using HTCDEV.com, but i am unsure what further steps i need to take to root my device as there are so many different view and topics on the subject and it all gets a little confusing as what to do next. My HBoot is 1.49.0018, and i really dont know what to do next, so could someone be so kind as to advice on what further steps are required.........Thank-you for any help offered.
You might already have done this but just to make sure.
Did you flash a recovery.img?
I wouldn't bother, there will undoubtedly be a pre-rooted, cwm flashable version available within a day of the update landing.

Don't know if it will update the hboot but I suggest you downgrade and s-off it, if there is any method available for gsm...
And to flash a ROM, you don't need to be rooted. Just flash a custom recovery.img like 4ext, twrp, cwm. Then flash any ROM that you like. Almost every ROM here comes with super user. So after flashing a custom ROM made by a Dev , you will be rooted. If you want to root your stock ROM and don't want to flash custom roms for now, just flash a custom recovery first, then go to recovery flash this zip if you want SuperSU by Chainfire----------> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
OR
this one if you want Superuser by ChainsDD---->
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312971
The second one might not work...
@iTzLOLtrain......I haven't flashed a recovery.img as of yet because i am unsure of the software to use buddy. If you could advise on which software you think is the best then i am more than keen to have a shot. This is my first time ever with android and i am really scared of 'bricking' my handset. I was under the impression if i wanted to install custom roms that i would have to root my device first?
@mnomaanw......Hi bud, i have tried the links you posted but i just get a 404 page not found error.........Cheers

Oops sorry....should work now.
Next step is to flash a custom recovery like 4ext which has no issues at all and then flash your su file this is how you obtain root access after this you flash a custom Rom

Ahhhh, I remember my first time. Do an awful lot of searching and reading. Once you feel like you can't get anymore info on a subject, then try it. You may have an issue, which most people on here will help u with when ask. If you came from that fruity company, you should be very happy with what Mr. Android and his developers can do.

Been away for a while could use some help

Well... After an issue with the digitizer in my phone I had to finally have it recently replaced. I had recently loaded the ICS OTA and actually for the most part liked it alot. I have rooted and done some roms with my 3d when it was Hboot 1.4 with Rev S off and root method. But my phone is currently Hboot 1.5 after replacing it. I havent loaded it to the OTA for ICS. But im trying to decide what I want to do. Id like to root and S off if I can and find a Rom/OTA that works great with the best performance and options with reduced bloat. ICS is pretty cool that I used, but seemed like some bugs with it to. Any suggestions of help on getting me there and in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Ive done some searches here and there on the forum. But really after taking time out for a medical issue I havent been in the loop til now. Thanks ahead of time for any help and suggestions you can push my way.

Here's what I would do in your situation:
1. Do HTC unlock and flash 4EXT recovery
2. Backup current ROM so you have a nandroid of GB stock
3. Root GB stock ROM and do JuopunutBear (wire trick) with GB version to gain S-OFF
4. Flash 2.89 RUU.exe to get solid Sprint ICS base (firmware and software)
5. Flash Jbear Sprint ICS (1.58.5858) or engineering (ENG) bootloader
6. Flash 4EXT recovery (via fastboot flash recovery.img)
7. Backup current ROM so you have a nandroid of ICS stock
8. Flash whatever ROM's you want to try and check them out
If all the ROM's you are interested in are ICS Sense, then the JB Sprint ICS bootloader is fine, but if you want to flash and run GB and AOSP ROM's the ENG bootloader is a better choice, but it won't run the 2.89 stock kernel.
That's one opinion.

Thanks Ramjet. What are you using or have you used? Is ICS the latest? Any other good stuff out there?
If anyone else has suggestions or preferences Id love to hear them.
Thanks!!

The Sprint ICS 2.89.651.2 release with Sense 3.6 is the latest official build, but there have been several CM10 based ROM's released using the AOSP 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) base, and some Sense 4.0 and 4.1 ROM's that run on the E3D.
My favorites are still MeanROM ICS 2.6 and SOS M 2.6.1 which use the same base. Here's a post I wrote back in May that enumerates the fixes mikeyxda had done to the VM leak base at that time and most of those fixes and enhancements were transferred to the Sprint ICS 2.89 based version, with some new ones added. SOS M is de-Sensed and offers a lot of customization built-in and via the Aroma installer with a minimal amount of effort. Both ROM's are fully functional and have good reliability, performance and battery life.
I've tested a lot of interesting ROM's with some unique features including Paranoid Devil with a tablet configuration option and Charmander with Sense 4, but they both have some stuff not working, including 3D and WiMax/4G. If you don't need those features you might also want to try some of the AOSP ROM's (CM9, CM10 and MIUI) since they are very light and clean, and a lot of the current development activity seems to be with those ROM's. If you want a full ICS Sense 3.6 based ROM with a lot of mods integrated, Cool ICS is worth a look too.
ramjet73
Thanks Ramjet. Im gonna check out the MeanRom ICS, SOS and Cool ICS. In past ive liked a sense based rom but Im open to other stuff. My main thing is wanting as few as issues or non working things as possible. Even the OTA of ICS has to muc issues. But the in general feel and look was good.
Thanks for the input and direction. I may hit you up on some advice if thats cool? Thanks again.
Just use the search function to find all the info on the stuff above Ramjet? or is there a good central location that might have links for everything?

A lot of the information and links that you will need are in mpgrimm2's guides in this forum. Just do an advanced search on threads started by user mpgrimm2 and you should have most of the information and links you need in those threads.

Ok So I got it unlocked. and installed the APK of the 4EXXT recovery. But its giving me some issues saying I need S-off before I can use it? I assume its a program that runs on the Phone not a recovery like ive been used to with the boot loader? If its a flash that flashes the boot loader i seem to be having issues finding it. How do I need to go about rooting? Is root the same as S off? Its been a while since doing all this kinda stuff and just getting back into it. Thanks for any direction you can give me.

This post by mpgrimm2 (part of his overall guide) covers flashing a custom recovery (like 4EXT) and superuser from the PC command prompt via fastboot. Those are the two steps required for rooting, after you have HTC unlocked.
Once you've done that you can move on to gaining S-OFF with either the JuopunutBear (wire trick) or Hboot downgrade method, which is setting the security off for the NAND memory of your phone, and allows you to flash more stuff and not have to use the fastboot command to do it.
It's probably time to move on to the Q&A forum since this has changed from an advice thread into a help thread.

[Q] Need help with S-off path

Firstly, thanks to everyone who contributes to this site. It has started me on a great journey of playing with these devices, starting with the Nook Color last year. Now I have a Rezound (trying to S-Off), and a new Nexus 7.
I have unlocked the bootloader using the HTCdev tool. I'm unsure where to go from here. I have the Hasoon2000 s-off tool, but it seems I need to root the phone. I haven't found any instructions for getting me through the rooting part. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can advance?
Thank you very much,
MT

+1 sorry i dont really want to start another threat because im kind of the same situation. My phone is htcdev unlock s-on h-boot 2.10 (yeah i know)
Amonra-recovery custom Rom. I want to s-off but my question is. Im i good to go to s-off how my phone is right now or do I have to change H-boot? and if I do which would you recommend?
Go to:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
Download the latest download for ARM. Devices. Flash via recovery and you will be rooted.
HTC Rezound
You need to flash a recovery and use it to flash Superuser or SuperSU. Hansoon2000 has a different all-in-one toolkit for the Rezound that can help you with all of that. It's linked under the sticky thread in Development. There's also other threads with manual instructions for the steps.
Thanks for your help, everyone. I was able to get things working correctly, and installed ViperRez 1.0.3. Very cool indeed!
Edit: I ended up going for the CM9 stock build instead. I really don't like Sense much, and much prefer the stock ICS interface.

New DNA with Questions

I hope I posted this in the rigth section, if I didnt I appologize. So, I used to have an HTC Thunderbolt and yesterday I upgraded to the DNA and I love it. But I do have a few questions. See I want to root it, but I dont want to have to hassle with all the custom ROM stuff again. Plus all I really see a need for me is to have root access. So I did do some looking and came across these links
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=36976137
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1996389
Im still a little new to the rooting scene and just want to make sure I know what im doing before I do it. So here are my questions.
1) If I root will I still be able to install the OTA updates that come on my phone?
2) Are the two links above both rooting methods, just different ways of doing it?
3) If yes to 2, is there a current "best" way to root the DNA?
4) If I decide to un-root, is there a way to do that? (im sure there is and a guide even)
I think that is all the questions I have for now. Thank you very much and keep up the great work here.

Follow the first link you posted because in order to unlock the bootloader you need the super CID hack then after you do the super CID hack go to the htcdev.com page and follow those instructions and then either flash a rooted rom or the Subusybox.zip to get root
To un-root simply lock the bootloader and run the RUU file

1) In short, no. To get the ota you'll have to install the stock recovery, and maybe relock, etc, etc. The easiest way is just to flash a rom based off the ota
2)Yes, but the second links to a thread which then in turn links to the first thread you in posted. Just use the first link you posted
3)See #2
4)ruu and fastboot oem lock, if your s off then its a little more complicated, but you will be able to be 100% stock as opposed to 99%

It means that the Security Flags have been turned OFF (S-OFF) and it allows you to write unsigned.img's and do other stuff to parts of the device that with Security ON you wouldn't be able too such as writing to the boot partition while in recovery, flash radios to the radio partition

[Q] S-Off Clarification and ROM advice

Hi, I rooted last night.
I'm boot unlocked.
S-ON
TWRP 2.6.3 (updated by Goo Manager)
SU User 1.8.6
Unlock took me down to 4.1.1
I tried to flash the most recent CM ROM in Goo Manager after a dalvik cache wipe and got stuck on boot. Is this likely because I'm S-ON or because I didn't use the right type of wipe?
Also, I know the MikMik ROM was the gold standard for a clean, lean and stable ROM without many bells and whistles on OG EVO. What is the equivalent for LTE/jewel? And so I need S-OFF for it?
Thanks in advance!
You have to flash the kernel separately from the ROM when S-on. Having said that, you don't have to be S-off to flash a ROM, but, as easy as the process is, it's worth it to be S-off. Take a look at the top link in my sig for more info. As for ROM advice, just start flashing until you find what you like. If you ask ten different people what their favorite is, you'll likely get ten different answers
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G LTE
Something equivalent I'd say "MeanBean " read the OP for this rom
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk
Thank you!
Thank you. I was finally starting to understand that I would probably need to S-Off so I could flash the kernel for a ROM other than one that uses a stock kernel. I was just hoping to avoid it, because I usually know just enough to be dangerous to my electronic devices...
I'll be sure to check out Mean Bean.
Mean Bean actually has a kernel installer to make flashing while S-on easier. Just make sure you read the Mean Bean OP so you follow the correct steps to get it installed properly.
