Lapdock HDMI audio - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello all,
I'm trying to use a Lapdock as an HDMI screen (there are a few threads about this, for example ), and the video part works fantastically. However, I can't seem to get an audio to play from the HDMI input on the Lapdock. I've tried a number of HDMI sources that supply audio with the video, and while the audio works on other HDMI monitors, the Lapdock doesn't produce any sound.
Does anyone know if I need to do something special to the Lapdock or the connector in order to get audio over HDMI?
Thanks,
Allan

I could be wrong, but I don't think the lapdock uses audio over HDMI. I think it uses audio over the microUSB. I base this on how the other two docks I have work (both the car dock and MM dock).

Wrong, the lapdock does use hdmi audio. same with the dock.

Doesn't the car dock use audio over usb?

Everything I could find thus far suggests that the audio is over HDMI (for example, setting up the audio from a Raspberry Pi to go over HDMI as described - raspberry org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=6747&p=86484 - about halfway down the page - "Mon May 28, 2012 4:33 pm". For for not providing a direct link - not enough karma on the forum to allow that yet!).
So it seems like it should be as simple as plugging in the HDMI, but that's no working for me. I might try plugging in a USB device as well and seeing that triggers something that will bring the HDMI audio up, but if anyone has any suggestions, I'm all ears!
Allan

The car dock is over USB but its not done digitally. Its just a break out cable. I've had my Xbox/ps3 working with the lapdock.

It works ok on my lapdock with both stock and custom ROM's (I was surprised to find the lapdock has two small speakers built in).
Unfortunately I can't think of any way you could test the speakers on the lapdock to see if they are working.

So if the Lapdock uses HDMI for audio, then what kind of circuit is in there decoding the audio for those speakers? Not the typically higher cost decoders found in TVs or electronics shops, there's not eeven nough room inside the lapdock for those.
So what is working that magic? Anyone?

Dock's audio
Dock's audio didn't work for me when I use custom ROM CM10.1, the audio out from the phone instead the output of dock.
Anyone know if have some workaround of this?

if you're using a 3.1.10 kernel, hdmi not supported.

Yes the kernel is 3.1.10.
I think you have reason, so I can't use my dock

Its been discussed thoughrouly on the kernel dev threads and is stated in the what works/what doesn't work list. hdmi is not something required to make the phone stable, therefore its disabled and on the back burner for now. plus there are driver issues.

Ok, I will try this ROM

lapdock does use the hdmi for audio. I have rpi 2 b. and two micro sd cards, one with kodi, and the other with debian/Jessie. im a noob at this, so I don't know all the different files in them. but when I use the one with kodi, I have sound through the lapdock. when I use the one with debian/Jessie no sound. however if I connect the pi (with debian/Jessie) to my vizio smart tv through hdmi I do have sound. I don't know if this helps.... and if some one could explain this that would help both of us.

Might want to clarify what the acronym stands for. I have no idea what a DAC is.
That's why I don't like to post technical things in the general section. Yet I know I'll get blasted if I post in developement. DAC stands for Digital-Analogue-Converter.

+1 for posting in the correct section though. Developers DO read the general and q&a sections of forums. Just not as often as ppl want them to - so they post in Development to get an answer faster... which is not the right way to go about things.
to put it in layman's term, what audio chip does the Atrix have
I'm curious this too, hoping for an answer

I don't know but it's clearly sub-par, as audited by audio-gd compass and D2000 ... And you can't change it so it kind of irrelevant.
Mayby also someone know is it possible to have direct digital stream from Atrix (bypassing DAC)?

With HDMI out, obviously, but I was also hoping for digital out over usb, like in the car's usb port. I doubt these car controllers know what to do with that connection, unless you can put it into mass storage mode and treat it like a flash drive.

I even didin't think about this... can someone confirm/deny? I'm not much into BT standard.
BUT I'd like have digital audio stream on cable connection - preferably USB pins - to connect this to external DAC (sth like OSNPA said)

So I traced this out, seems like it has been dead in the water since nVidia bought portalplayer in 2007. Kicking around on the rockbox wiki, I found this android port:
http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/AndroidPort
I read through forums, searched, and looks like an apk for qHD needs to be developed yet. Would like to be wrong. Anyone have info on this?
I hate to dig up an old thread, but this is kinda what I was hoping for. I'm in the process of building a "portable" device that would have a Digital port interface, feeding professional DAC and HiFi headphone amplifier. Never actually tried to connect a phone to a receiver with HDMI connector, but it should work, bypassing phone's DAC and feeding digital PCM signal to external device.
As far as BlueTooth connection goes (for the last poster), then if you are looking for good quality, looks somewhere else. Bluetooth compresses the sound on the fly before sending it to the paired device. For some it might be unnoticable, but to me it is unbearable.
According to http://www.head-fi.org/t/549644/motorola-atrix-sound-quality, it is a Wolfson 8903 L. From what I have read, everything points to the Atrix and the Tegra 2 using a Wolfson DAC. Don't forget that the amp and preamp are just as important to sound quality. Supposedly, ICS may support USB DACs.

Wrong,
Just contacted ('PCWAR'), he said he is unsure, he saw such info on xda forums.
WM8903L is made for Harmony Tegra 2, or tablet Tegra 2.
All Tegra 2 Ventanna uses WM8994 DAC
Yay, we've got the highest end DAC, par with the S3 and Note 2 except bit higher stereo crosstalk.

Hello everybody,
I know that the scene is working really hard making and porting ROMS for the NT, now that CM7 (ALPHA) is out... I'm curious if is a CHANCE or light in the future to use a micro USB/HDMI output to be able to connect the tablet to a HD TV using MHL.
PS: Is the CM7 KERNEL capable of mounting or recognize keyboards, gamepads etc etc with micro USB port.

I'm pretty sure that video output would require some hardware support, soas far as I know that won't be possible.
I don't know about using the USB for external devices, but if they ever figure out the "magic number" it should be possible via Bluetooth.

MHL is pretty cool .But AFAIK Nook does not have a HDMI out function. B&N would've advertised the **** out of this feature , coz it would have been a great advertising feature .IIRC most 7" tabs lack video output .
USB OTG has not been described as a feature and seems very unlikely .
If the bluetooth module (present but disabled) is unlocked and drivers installed , then BT keyboards, gamepads possible in the distant future .
Hav fun

HDMI audio in ICS?

Sorry if this topic has been done to death, but do any of the ICS versions for the G-Tablet have working HDMI audio, through the dock or otherwise? It's the one feature remaining that I'd really like to have for TV viewing (I suppose I can run analog audio-out to my receiver), This is not meant as a knock against the developers who are working hard to keep the G-Tablet viable, but could you give us an ETA for HDMI audio, or should I start looking at other options? Thanks.

HTC One x+ HDMI out?

Hi all,
Does the HTC One X+ allow HDMI video out?
I can only find info on the other X models, but none specify the X+?
If anyone has done this, can you share the product that allows it? I would like it for not only photos/videos but ideally also for apps.
Thanks in advance for sharing.
I bought a $5 MHL cord off ebay and it works fine with my phone. Just look on ebay for MHL cord and you will find it easily.
Does this also work for applications like Plex and Netflix?
it just duplicastes your screen, so yes.

if it just duplicates the screen, what is the resolution of the output-signal? On the screen a full-hd file will only be displayd at 1280 x 720!

Does that cable work well? And did you have any problems setting it up? I've been looking for one but wasn't sure which one to trust.

Hi. Yes, that one works great. No setup, just plugged it in and it immediately replicated my phones screen on my TV. No setup. Just plug and play.
I was just about to order one of those but then I wondered about an adapter that outputs to RCA plugs for older TVs. Can anyone recommend one?
Thanks.

I've never tested audio yet (i connect it to a pc monitor without sound), but when I connect I've no audio on my speaker so i assume that the audio is passed to the hdmi instead of the speaker.
I will test it as soon as I've access to a screen with audio. Will also test dolby pass trough, but that would probably require some advanced players that support it.
Would be great!

Ok I've tested it now.
Audio works, but only stereo. The only app that i found that did support some audio output options was xbmc and that app said that it could not find any pass-trough device so could not enable that.
The only question that remains if it support multi-channel audio over hdmi (lpcm), unfortunately I cannot check this one as I do not have a receiver with hdmi input (only toslink)
I hope this answer was helpful for you.
BTW i tested with this cable: http://dx.com/p/micro-usb-to-1080p-hdmi-mhl-adapter-for-htc-evo-3d-samsung-i9100-i9108-more-black-156900
