My phone was just stolen and so I am temporarily using an older Gingerbread device I had laying around. The problem is that my wife used it for a period of time and so its "locked" to her Google account. I realize that with root its fairly easy to disassociate the device from the primary Google account, but I have been unable to find out how to do it WITHOUT root. Can anyone help?? I really don't want to fully wipe the device if possible! The phone in question is running 2.3.4.

You can't do that if it is your only account.

That is incorrect. You are unable to delete the primary account associated with your phone, that is why I posted this thread. Does anyone know of another way??

Even if you have two (or more) accounts it will not allow you to delete the "primary" one without doing a factory reset.....
Hmmm this might help you. =)

So the link provided does give instructions, however the problem is as follows:
"Remove an account
You can remove an account to delete it and all information associated with it from your phone, including email, contacts, settings, and so on.
You can’t remove the first Google Account you signed into on the phone, except by deleting all personal information from your phone. See Privacy settings to learn now to do that."
I am still stuck here, does anyone know how to sort this out?
Not sure if this still works...I did this when I had my G1...go to Settings>applications click on all scroll down to Gmail and delete data.
Unfortunately that didnt help...
What else do you see in the application list? Is there a google accounts? Or maybe Google apps? Anything that starta with Google? Try delete that data

So the list of services that include "Google" in the title include the following:
1) Gmail
2) Google Backup Transport
3) Google Calendar Sync
4) Google Contacts Sync
5) Google Partner Setup
6) Google Play Movies and TV
7) Google Play Store
8) Google Search
9) Google Services Framework
10) Google Sky Map
11) Google Translate
12) Google Voice
yeah, you cannot delete the account ... You have only option to factory reset and again create a new one.
I did the same way... If any one knows let me know.
Perhaps there is another way : I've don't tested it. You´re Phone must be rooted. You can delete the file " accounts.db. Find it in data > system >accounts.db. and Reboot the Phone.
But you will do it on your own Risk. Imho a Factory-Reset is the better way. :good:

as i browse the link i have question
Method 1
Open Menu, and go to Settings.
Select Applications and then go to Manage Applications.
Look for the app “Google Apps” and tap it.
Now tap the “Clear data” button.
Now, in the Notifications (top of the screen) you will see a new notification.
Tap “Your account must be updated”.
Now enter your new Google account info.
Reboot your phone and you’re all done!
Your new Google account should be up and running now. Now you just need to get your contacts back and your phone will be just like it was before.

1. Download Root Explorer from Android Market
2. Explore to /data/system/ and find this file : accounts.db
3. Delete that file (accounts.db)
4. Reboot your Android device.
5. Walla…you can register another account

I have recently install a new Rom in my x8.... it seems that I can't access into the market....
It says that I have to create a new account... when I click yes... nothing come out... can anyone help me!!.. my Rom is update-FroyoBread.v023b... pls help me
You may need to ask this question in the thread for your rom.
I assume you have a Google account, correct?
Are you signed in on your phone under "accounts and sync"?
Market needs a working Google account to function. You may meed to get to a computer and verify or create a Google account.

You can try and goto Settings---Applications---Manage Applications---Show All Applications
---goto Market and then clear the cache, and the Clear Data. Then open up Market again
and then try to reconnect your device. Again, you must have your device connected to an active Gmail account in order to use the market successfully.
Hey everyone, I closed the Gmail account that my phone was using for the Android Market and now every time I start up my phone I get invalid email messages and can't use the Android Market.
I have looked and looked but cannot figure out how to remove the email adress and add the new one. When I try to remove it it says I cannot because some apps are using it.
I'm on the OpenOptimus Rom at the moment.
Any help is appreciated, I really want to download text to speech by Sonalight!

You could try wiping "Accounts and Sync Settings" and uninstalling all google apps (If you are rooted). Then simply downloads GAPPS and flash. Otherwise => install Titanium Backup, backup all your apps, wipe data and restore everything (Except google apps and "Accounts and Sync Settings") using Titanium Backup.
Edit: I decided to update the rom and everything cleared. Thanks anyways everyone!
Hi there
Lately i have a error 921 at Google play. Cannot Update or download from the market.
I tried everything i found here (i think) on xda forums
Clear cache and date from google play app, clear data from Google service framework, rebooted, But no.
I also did a factory reset from settings, added my account back on, but same error. Error 921.
I also added another google account, same error 921 :-/
Does someone has a solution to this?

No Luck. I contacted google support, so hopefully they can help.
I cleared cache, dalvik, factory reset from cwm and more.. no luck. All downloads hangs for a long time, then error 921
I also followed this: http://allaboutregistry.blogspot.com/2012/04/how-to-fix-android-error-921.html No luck
Update: It works on Mobile data, as in 3g. Not wifi. But since i do not have a good dataplan, i need the google play to work on WiFi. Suggestions?

No success for me doing that way. Says "cannot remove account".
So i did a factory reset in CWM, added account and started all over. still no success. Strange error.
Also added transparent proxy to see if it worked. But no.
But over 3G it works. over WIFI not.

Not sure you can root, you have android 7, there is no temp rooting for it yet, and also if root failed then that might lead to a software brick, which can be solved by re flashing stock rom which is a bigger thing
So I'd vote for the "reset data"
