Just picked this up for my girlfriend. I currently have an Incredible, rooted with CM. She will not (or at least I havent convinced her to) let me root at this point.
What are some ways/apps to help manage the battery?? Connecting to Wifi at work will help the 3G/4G search drain but I need to take it further.
I'm looking for all suggestions, from sync setup to brightness setup to animations to apps.
Set the screen to automatically turn off after 15-30 seconds, use the LTE on/off app to disable 4G by forcing 3G only unless you need the extra speed (assuming you even have 4G where you are), don't use dynamic themes, limit how often apps sync data, set the screen brightness to automatic, and use a task killer to manually kill (don't use auto-kill unless there is an auto-kill whitelist as most apps don't need it) stubborn apps that want to constantly run in the background.
If and when she is willing to let you root it, then use SetCPU to underclock when the screen is off and freeze (or rename) the built in apps that she doesn't use as many of them will not only run on boot but will keep reloading themselves if killed.
Using all of that, I can get over 30 hours on standby assuming fairly light usage (a few hours of talking via bluetooth). Of course, with heavy usage (such as with streaming video like the tv.com or epix apps) the battery life is much lower.

Use juice defender from the market to turn off 4G while the screen is off. This added about 4 hours of battery life to my phone, standard battery.
Juice defender and green power are both great apps. As far as killing tasks, I've read that killing tasks can actually decrease your battery life because of how android handles the tasks and ram.
Androids tries to keep as many apps in ram to make loading faster, and if you kill all apps, the system will start loading them again, using more of your cpu, therefore decreasing barry life and slowing the phone down. Android had a very good and smart task manager built in to the os.
That is my understanding. If I am wrong, please correct me.

If you can't root, the next best option is a spare or extended battery. Apps like Juice Defender help a little, but no software can replace a real battery. I used JD until I bought some batteries on ebay.

Tell her to either let you root it, or you will sell the TB and get her a WP7 phone...

It can, but there are also quite a few apps that will keep consuming lots of CPU cycles in the background. Some games are like this as well as some of the video streaming apps.

This is true. Autostarts (in the market) prevents such apps from running in the background & draining battery.

my phone is rooted, bloat removed, cm7 installed - i had this weird issue last night where i was charged up to 100% went to bed and phone was dead in the AM. apparently it died about 5 hours in. I looked at the battery info and saw that nothing was running, but the phone kept going "awake" intermittently. Looking at spare parts for the detailed abttery info i didn;'t see anything that was holding wake locks...
Not sure what the issue was. Doesn't seem to be happening anymore

Turn off wifi when its not available.. scanning for it can drain your battery quite a lot. Obviously turn 4g seach off if you are not near a 4g area. I have my screen turned down to about 30-40% and it stays there(its quite bright at that % anyways). Dont use any task killing programs.. android OS has a very nifty task killer program on it already where it prioritizes what tasks stay running or don't. I have heard good things about juice defender you might want to check it out. Turn off sync for all apps and put the manual sync widget on your screen and that will also save some battery. Those should help some but a big one which killed my battery before I rooted was the bloatware apps that HTC puts on the phone. Blockbuster runs something in the background that will kill your battery. It is called PMVtpServiceStart force stop it in running processes and open up blockbuster then install the latest update and then force close it again and blockbuster. That should stop it from running. However you have to do this every time you reboot. Those are all my suggestions.. maybe buy a car charger if you drive a lot. I have one and its nifty to just plug it in whenever I drive to get a little bit more power! Good luck on your phone. PM me if you have any more questions.
i loved juice defender and used to recommend it to everyone, but a week or so ago, i had an issue to where my 3G stopped working altogether. I could still turn my 4G on, and force 3G to come on to check for software updates, but then it would go back off. After 24 hrs of no 3G, i uninstalled Juice defender, and after a couple of reboots, 3G came back on.
I guess there is no way to prove for sure if it was juice defender, but i feel that it was. If you are willing to take the risk, i was able to get 1.6 to 1.8 times more battery life out of juice defender.

i'm not sure, i typically had my 4g turned off unless i had a big download or was streaming/using mobile hotspot. It would automatically shut the 3G off when the screen was locked, but then one day the 3G just wouldn't come back on. I went into the wireless network settings and flipped the LTE back on, and that worked fine. With my work, I am in/out of 3G-4G coverage, so having just 4G is unacceptable. After uninstalling juice defender and restarting several times, it came back on. Could have been a coincidence, could have been the MR2 radio, could have been a combo, i don't know.
Does the TB continue to search for 4G when the screen is off? Or does the 4G only drain your battery when you're actually connected to it?
Hello all,
I purchased a Galaxy S2 at the end of July, I live in the US, so it was from Amazon. The phone has been phenomenal, an amazing piece of technology.
I rooted the phone and flashed Lite'ning Rom 6.1 XXKH3. Still worked great, with no problems at all.
However, starting about a week ago, I am getting an extremely fast battery drain. Since then, I have spent hours looking at threads trying to figure out what was going on. I updated the rom to UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5, still no change.
I used Titanium Backup to freeze many widgets and app processes, still no change. I am currently using better battery stats to monitor wake locks, however after managing the wake locks, still no change.
I then bought a replacement battery thinking that the battery may have been bad, sadly, there was no change.
I have been trying to find a solution to this and had tried many other suggestions in other threads to no avail. As of now I have come to the conclusion that the device might have some type of malfunction that is causing this.
Am I going crazy or am I missing something obvious? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
I have also re-calibrated the battery, still no positive changes.
Seeing the battery graph, you have your screen on a lot of time. Screen sucks battery a lot, so there might be one of the causes of battery draing.
Also you seem to have all day enabled 3G/WiFi, that also sucks some battery with it.
You can try JuiceDefender and see if it can help you extend a little your battery.
change kernel
Try flashing hardcore's "SpeedMod Kernel" and you will never complain about your battery life.....
After flashing this kernel my worse battery life was 1day and 12h with 3.5h screen on and wifi 85% ON.

Lol.... It's obvious he has some kind of battery problem, he is not using the phone much, and galaxy S 2 should have at least 5-6 hours screen on time and the phone lasted 3 hours.

Since I had all data on the phone backed up, I did a factory reset. I also flashed the UltraToxic Rom v8.0 XWKK5 as well as the suggested SpeedMod Kernel. When the battery was at 100%, I calibrated the battery. I tried to leave the phone idle as much as possible, I did use the internet for about 10 minutes to check e-mail, news, etc. So now the phone is essentially "empty" in terms of apps downloaded, I got rid of all widgets on all home screens.
There was still no positive change, I do really like the SpeedMod Kernel though, I do notice faster responsiveness from the phone.
I am beginning to think that the problem may be the hardware and not the software or battery.
I've got similar problems here. I am suspecting a hardware problem (I damn well hope it isn't coz i got mine from hong kong) because my phone never goes into deep sleep mode for more than 50% while the screen is off. I've tried at least half a dozen different kernels and roms and nothing helps, this is even in airplane mode i.e. with pretty much everything turned off. I've tested wakelocks and dont get anything more than a couple of seconds. I had my battery charged to full at 6:30am this morning, went to work and got home and it was dead after just under 12 hours with being idle 75% of the time. This is worrying as most people's battery lasts at least a whole day.
So I know it can't be the kernel, I know it cant be wakelocks, I know it cant be wifi or 3g data or anything of that nature so the only thing it comes down to now is hardware...
Funnily enough I've had exactly the same issue since about a week ago. Even when I take it off charge it's almost immediately down to around 80%. It's lasting around 4-5 hours, even when I'm not using the phone much, plus it gets really hot.
A couple of times Social Hub has appeared high up on the list of battery draining apps, although I don't use it. It doesn't always show up though. I switched to the CF-Root kernel and started using GO Launcher EX recently and wondered if that (or one of it's addon widgets) could be the cause.
It's really bugging me now!
SOLVED!
After days and days of trying to fix the issue of the phone not sleeping (and therefore draining excess battery whilst idling) I have finally fixed it!!!!!
First i noticed that along with the sleep problems, I was getting the problems with car mode popping up randomly, the phone going into mtp connection mode, and thinking its charging when it was unplugged. After looking into these issues (and i thought it was a longshot) I decided to do what people were saying and CLEAN THE MICRO USB PORT.
Now you're probably thinking I am a crazy man, but now im just crazy happy that I don't have to send my phone back to Hong Kong!
Instructions:
1. Get a clean, dry, soft-bristled toothbrush.
2. Take any case you have off the phone.
3. Gently insert the bristles into the port and "flick" it out softly.
4. Repeat this about 10-15 times
No matter what ROM, what kernel, what modem i tried flashing, my phone was always sitting on no more than 50% deep sleep mode when idle and had no wakelocks or "rogue apps".
I am now getting 90% - 98% DEEP SLEEP MODE!
I obviously can't guarantee that it will work for everyone, heck how it solved the issue is a mystery to me, one which probably an electronically-minded/computer systems person could answer. What I can say though is I searched high and low online for about a week. I tried different kernels, I tried different ROMs, I tried "re-calibrating" the battery, I used BBS to check for partial wakelocks. If you too have tried all this and have had no success please PLEASE try this and see if you have success!!
Thanks for reading!
....
Or if you didnt...
TL;DR: If you're having battery drain problems clean the micro USB port with a soft toothbrush.
The phone never sleeps when charging, the CPU idles at 200 MHz, whatever was in your USB port was probably making contact with the pins that tells the phone it is connected to a charger when it actually is not, so it was idling at 200 MHz and was not receiving power, that's the only explanation I could fathom
Do two things:
Install CPU spy and show us what the deep sleep percentages are,
and try disabling wifi. Also, what is the router?
I have a battery drain issue; but its kind of screwey as i will reboot my phone and lose about 20% of the phones charge. If i turn it off and leave it off for an hour the charge comes back. Its random as well; only happens once a week. I have had this problem on different roms. You might have a similar problem to me. Possible the hardware that detects battery state is knackered.

Since you didn't seem to realize, I thought I'd tell you. This thread was 5 months old before you posted in it...

Hi everyone
So I recently got a S2, upgraded it from stock Gingerbread to stock ICS via Kies, then flashed CM9. CM9 was great, but I quickly noticed worse battery drain than that of GB. I sorted out all wakelocks, now facebook is the top one in better battery stats list and it's only 10mins in a day so I don't think that's a problem. When charging, vbus_present shows up and keeps the phone from sleeping, but that's a normal thing when the phone is plugged, right? CPUspy shows the phone is in deep sleep the majority of time I don't use it, so I assume I have no wakelock problem.
But even then, the battery still seems a bit bad. When in deep sleep with wifi and mobile data off, it would lose around 1.5% per hour; and with moderate/high use (internet with wifi or gaming), I'd be lucky to have it last 3 hours. Charging to 100% from zero takes about 3 hours.
I also tried recalibrating the battery through BC, but haven't noticed too much of a difference.
Recently I found a guide on disabling fast dormancy via the build.prop file. Still waiting for results though.
So, my questions
1, My battery usage seems normal, doesn't it? 1.5% per deep sleep hour is acceptable I guess, but 3 hours of usage seems a bit short. Too short.
2, What effects does fast dormancy have?
1) Totally unacceptable. Mine lasts at least 7-8 hours with high use..
Does your phone heat up while the heavy use ???
What brightness level do you use for the display ???
How many apps do you have that can gain internet access ???
2) By default, the Samsung Galaxy S II has Fast Dormancy support enabled. One of the goals of Fast Dormancy is to increase the battery life of a device, by limiting the amount of signaling between the phone and the cell network. But, when Fast Dormancy it is not enabled in the network and is enabled on the phone it ironically works the other way around, and actually drains more battery than before.
Luckily, Fast Dormancy can be disabled on the phone. For the Galaxy S II, do the following:
Dial *#9900#
Press “Disable Fast Dormancy“
Press “Exit“.
Easy as that!
Thanks for the suggestion I have brightness manual and at around 20%. Wifi is disabled when not used, and mobile data is always turned off unless I need it, so basically apps only get internet access when I want them to. I have also disabled sync for both google and facebook, but fb still pushes notifications to me while it's connected. Is that a major battery drain, and if yes, how to disable it?
Anyways, facebook, instagram, youtube are the only apps than can access the internet. No messengers or anything that may keep a wakelock.
My phone doesn't heat up during normal use, maybe a bit when I do some gaming (Max Payne?)
Also, *#9900# doesn't do anything on my phone. It doesn't bring up a menu or anything like that.
Bump. Guys?

Install BetterBatteryStats (search for it on here/Google Play), might help you nail what's causing the drain.
Yes I did, as said in my original post. After a night the highest wakelock are just around 10 minutes, and that one was facebook. Uninstalling it however had no effect.
Delivered using Nyan Cat's rainbow powers.
Thinking logically, there's got to be something else in those stats (partial wakelocks in particular) that's causing that drain. There's no way having fast dormancy enabled/disabled is either going to cause/fix the drain you've mentioned getting '3 hours of usage'; (I can get 5 & a bit hours screen on with CM9 & variable usage/mostly 'moderate' use) given everything else you say you've tried.
Post BBS logs here if you want someone to have a look.
Edit to add - Also post a screenshot of the 2nd screen in settings/battery, the one that has history 'details' at the top, with the 'mobile network signal' bar underneath the main battery graph.

I just registered half a day ago and don't have enough posts yet to paste links, so sorry the phone was only on battery for nearly 2 hours with some light browsing and facebook, but I hope it works.
Anyway, I looked through my running processes, and dsp manager is the only non-OS process running, besides facebook. I got CM9 so it came by default. Could dspmanager be the culprit?
Delivered using Nyan Cat's rainbow powers.
It's a new phone he's got there and I doubt it could be anything battery related itself.
I'm using CM9 nightlies and I get around 9 hours moderate use. It has been said though that a lot of these CM9 builds have battery drain and heat issues.
I use Juicedefender to help with the battery life which seems to work.

About 1/3 of this time was on wifi browsing. The drop is much more drastic if I play games.
Delivered using Nyan Cat's rainbow powers.
A couple of observations. There's nothing that stands right out in the BBS log. The other one is, looking at that graph you've lost ~15% over a bit under 2 hrs. The screen has been on most of the time the phone has been awake (confirmed by the BBS log) if you look at the respective bars. You've also been using WiFi for most of the time the screen has been on/phone has been awake.
Roughly speaking, going by the screenshot, you'd get ~5hrs+/- screen on time if you kept using the phone in the same way you had during that just under 2 hrs, and this is pretty much normal. I haven't had drain issues for ages, so I double checked my details on the 2nd screen of settings/battery to make sure CM9 is reporting these details accurately (screenshot attached). Certainly in my case, this screenshot reflects what my phone had been doing for the just under 5 hrs it had been off charge/since last reboot; that is, >90% of the time in idle/deep sleep. So it probably isn't CM9 reporting these details inaccurately in your case either.
The BBS log & screenshot don't illustrate the problem you talked about in your OP. Now, if I had to take a stab in the dark at what's causing problems when you do have them (and FWIW, I do believe you're having the problems you mentioned in your OP at times), in the absence of any other info, maybe your WiFi router is constantly sending the phone packets (what's been referred to as a 'dirty router' on here before) when you're connected to WiFi & not actually using it. This scenario has been known to cause relatively high levels of drain.
So to be honest with you, based on that screenshot & the BBS log, I'm not really seeing a problem.
Now, if you want to post the same again when you actually have a problem with drain similar to what you described in your OP, happy to have a look at them. But for that ~2hrs covered by the BBS log & screenshot you posted, that's pretty much normal.

Okay, much appreciated so I guess I'll take it from your reply that 5 hours with wifi browsing isn't too bad. Seems okay, but I still find it a bit strange that (in my case) wifi browsing uses just as much battery as games do. I always thought it was a light activity!
Or maybe it wasn't the battery that had a problem, but that I set my expectations a bit too high. I came to this S2 from a BlackBerry 9700, whose battery would last half a week with very frequent use. But anyway, I just got this phone for a week, so I consider myself a pretty heavy user. Probably when I get familiar with it, I won't feel the need to play with it every five minutes and battery will last a bit longer then! xD
Nah. Anything with screen on is far from 'light activity'. Screen consumes far & away the most juice. In saying that, I've seen some people on here say they can get 8-9 hrs screen on with 2000mAh battery. How they do it I have absolutely no idea.
But if yeah, 5 hrs with the screen on most of the time whether browsing or playing games (games in particular are very CPU/GPU intensive & thus use a lot of zzzzs; unless they're really basic games like chess or similar), or anything else isn't too bad. Can you do better ? Obviously, if people say they can get 8-9 hrs. But it's not a matter of doing A, B & C and you'll magically end up with massive screen on times. Every phone is setup & used differently, and getting the absolute max out of every charge takes a lot of trial & error and experimenting with settings/setup.
There are tons of threads about the subject on here if you feel like going down that path. For me, I'm happy with the battery life I get these days because you can really obsess over it & spend a lot of time stressing over it/trying to maximise it for often very little gain. I'd rather simply use my phone a lot during the day & charge it at night.
Yeah Crackberries are like Japanese cars, they can run on fumes pretty much ;-) Having a dual core processor, a decent GPU & a huge screen kinda changes things.
There is one thing you can do fairly easily tho. And that's to make sure the phone spends as much time as possible in deep sleep when you're not using it. That will ensure that you have enough juice to get you by when you do want to use it. Simple ways to help achieve that is to turn off data/WiFi completely when you're not using it (tho many people don't like to do this for different reasons; which is perfectly OK if you're happy to live with the resultant drain), and make sure you've got no apps that are doing things they shouldn't be doing (like syncing, for example) while the phone should be sleeping. Again, there are lots of threads about same if you ever feel like a bit of light reading ;-)
So yeah, if you do find you experience drain that's not normal/outside the usual pattern you have, definitely post details & people can have a look for you. And as you said, you'll get to know what really is normal with regard to drain & so on is as you use the phone more (I tended to use it constantly for that first couple of weeks as well).

Already took such measures. Wakelocks killed my battery over my first night with the phone, and I woke up after 7 hours to find a ~50% battery completely empty. Now things are alright, I clear CPUSpy stats before I sleep and wake up to around 95% of deep sleep time. Overnight drain varies between 5 and 10%.
And yes, yes you are right. Maybe I should stop going nuts. I'm checking BBS and CPUSpy every hour, reading every XDA thread on battery, and calculating my battery drainage every morning I wake up :laugh::laugh:

Umm...so I just woke up, and noticed a wakelock in the kernel category. It was PowerManagerService, and it occupied around half an hour. Overnight, aftet I've slept 10 hours (got a day off ), my battery came from 24% down to 13%. That's a rate of roughly 1% per hour. Is that normal? And also, what is that PowetManagerService wakelock?

I have been all over the web in search of something that will extend my battery life in one particular application. So far I am empty handed. I have contacted the application support staff and they say it is not their issue.
I use GolfLogix on the golf course. Up until a couple of weeks ago I had no issues. I could get thru the round and still have plenty of battery left to carry me into the evening.
Then one day without anything changing to my knowledge the phone began to run out of battery half way thru a round, somewhere around the 2-1/4 hr mark.
At that time I was running Ginger Bread on a Droid Razr.
They had me uninstall the app and reinstall the latest version. That did nothing.
Since then I have upgraded to ICS and that has helped a bit. The phone dies at about the 3-1/4 hr mark.
I might add that I am also running Juice Defender Ultimate.
I always start with an overnight charge and 100% battery.
It would appear that something in the app has changed even thou they say not or items in the background are sucking up power.
I have installed Better Battery Stats in hopes that would shed some light but I am not understanding what I am seeing there. Besides once the phone dies their is nothing there after recharging.
Can anyone offer any help or suggestions?
Thanks in advance

Well from my experience Juice Defender causes more problems then good. Better Battery Stats will shed some light on what might be waking up your phone but what you might also want to check is to see if some application is sending/receiving large amounts of data, this will pretty much kill your battery because of how much of a battery drainer 4G really is. So just go to your settings and click Data Usage just to check if there is an application like that. I've been hearing about problems like that with the new gallery and such.

Thanks for your reply. I have done as you suggested and turned Juice Defender off. In addition I was able to fore the phone to 3G. That has always been sufficient for me in the past. If you have any other thoughts pls post them. I will come back to you after my next round of golf with the results.

My wife and I both have the Galaxy S4, verizon flavor.
My phone's battery usage is very nice. Most of the time I go to bed with 30-70% left on the battery. Hers does the same. The only difference is I use my phone a lot and she barely uses it during the day. A couple of texts, maybe a phone call and on occasion an internet search. Before this happened, and I don't know what was the tipping point, she use to charge her phone every third day, now she charges it every night.
Her phone is also 6 months newer than mine. Both are running stock, both are Android 4.3. I have both phones setup as close as possible so I can make comparisons between the two. Obviously she has different needs and will have different apps running/installed.
I have taken all of her apps off the phone and it hasn't changed the battery problem. I have reset the phone and still the battery drain persists.
I have put Battery Monitor Widget and GSam on her phone and I really haven't been able to locate the offending app/program/function. The only possibility is the 1013 system and "AudioOut_2". But that seems unlikely as this drain is about every 20 minutes and goes on all day.
Usually she runs with her phone in minimal activity. Data off, Sync off, GPS off, Power Saving on.
Here is a chart from a while back, everyday looks similar with the drains. My phone has long periods of straight white lines when inactive, hers just keep going down.
can't post the image of the battery chart. Gonna make it more difficult to solve.
Just wondering where to look and if this is something that can be solved or is possibly a phone problem/defect. As I mentioned, mine works nice and I have it setup as close to my phone as possible to get results that can be compared.
first of all im no expert, but i think it could go either way. before assuming its hardware it wouldnt hurt to back everything up, try a factory reset and a wipe mk2 odin flash. then seeing if the issue persists. just throwing my thoughts out there. hope it gets resolved regardless. :good:

Have you tried Better Battery Stats + a Wakelock Detector? Between those two it should be really easy to see if this is a software problem or perhaps a bad battery.
I'll link you to the wakelock detector I use. In my opinion it's the easiest to use.
Here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector
You can see wakelocks in BBS as well.... But I just like the options this one gives

I haven't tried BBS+, but Wakelock Detector has been running since the problem was detected. That is how I found the 1013 and Audio2_Out running. At the beginning it seemed to correlate with the problem but as time moved on it seemed less and less the culprit.
I haven't really found anything using wakelock detector. I could give you some stats off of it tonight when I have access to my wife's phone again.
Any stats that you'd like me to post I can do that. Eventually I'll be able to post that Battery Monitor Widget graph so you can see what is happening.
Pretty sure we can rule out a bad battery. About 99.9% sure.
First things first I would swap batteries between the two phones. Lets rule out a faulty battery first, because trying to figure out battery drain with a faulty battery can be maddening!
