i put my i9100 into download mode to use odin to flash rom, when connected to my computer via usb, computer shows unknown usb device (driver installed, tried multiple computer and different usb ports and usb cables)
this started happening after i flash a rom, it is CriskeloROM Gingerbread V34.
tried using recovery to flash to a different rom, recovery would inform me that can't mount sd card.
help please.
Remove KIES, then reinstall samsung USB drives only.
This should be in Q&A section.

uninstall kies and USB drivers, install kies (not install kies, just driver), tried all those, doesn't work.
it's not that the Odin is not compatible with my S II, or the drivers are not installed (when i'm booted into my phone, connect phone to computer while not in download mode, computer picks up phone fine. it's only when the phone is in download mode.)
anything else guys?
or is my phone ****ed?

Hey guys,
using MIUI.us version 2.7.13 on my phone, but since my android.phone FCed all the time here on holidays I thought of going back one version. Just wanted to restore to 2.7.6.
Unfortunately I am now stuck at the yellow boot logo.
I just a USB cable to reflash the whole thing, but my phone does not connect to the laptop. I can enter the download mode and it says bright and clear "downloading... do not restart phone", but it simply just not connects with ODIN.
Is this because the cable does not support that or is something bigger the problem?
Thanks for your help!

ok seems that your phone may be only soft bricked, not hard bricked, so you can easily make it work again, try to enter recovery by key combo, if you can enter recovery just wipe every thing, and then make afresh install of the rom, if you can only enter download mode, just try any other usb cabl and use another usb port in your usb, and flash stock samsung rom, and you will be fine,
btw : i don't know about miui version , is it ics or gb, and whats kernel you are using, please provide more info about rom version and the used kernel.

hi just a thought have you got kies installed? and also do not have it running at the same time as odin its only needed for driver support as you may or may not know.
also as previous posts suggest you haven't totally bricked your phone so should be sound to restore.
I think u had unchecked ur debugging mode....
Stuff to try when Odin doesn't work:-
*Must run Odin as administrator in Windows.
*Ensure Kies & it's processes aren't running in Windows task manager. Kill them if they are.
*Try different USB ports; you must be using a 'powered' or mainboard port.
*Try different USB cables (particularly the cable that came with the phone if you're not using it now)
*Try different versions of Odin (search on here/Google)
*Uninstall Kies, reboot, re-download & reinstall it, reboot, try the flash again. Also run Windows Update.

I had had the drivers installed. Just installed KIES aswell, but it didn't make a difference.
I can't go into CWM anymore. The only thing I can manage is the download mode, but I can't get ODIN to connect with the phone.
The cable I am using is not the original one, but a multicable (plugs for all kinds of USBs, iPhone, phones). Is it possible this is the reason?
Thanks!

Bought a new cable and now ODIN can connect without trouble. What did we learn from this: never use one of those multicables for flashing etc. They won't work.
Btw my friend tried to use the same cable for his iPhone and it wasn't able to connect either to iTunes. Just charging worked!

Galaxy S3 not being recognized in odin in download mode
Could someone please assist.
My rooted Galaxy S3 phone (FW v4.1.2) is stuck at the Samsung startup screen after installing a font app from the app store
To resolve I have tried:
1. The recovery screen - doing a factory reset and reboot
2.. Reflash through ODIN.
I can get get the phone into download mode but ODIN will not recognize the phone in Download mode (Funny that phone is recognised by Odin at the stuck Samsung boot screen)
- I have unistalled and reinstalled KIES and USB drivers
- I am using the stock USB cable
- Tried different USB ports on computer
- Tried on different computers
The problem may be Windows driver related. Because phone gets stuck at the Samsung startup screen, all processes of driver installation do not conclude successful. "MTP USB Device" shows error in Windows Device manager, USB composite deivce.
Uninstalled and reinstalled these a couple of times without success.

Issues with usb on s3
Actually fixed my own Question....
My phone was in download mode and was not being recognized by my computer my windows 7 computer. I pressed the usb icon, where a box popped up saying that there was an unknown device. You could find this in device manager.
I then went to device manager to update the driver instead of pointing the device directly to the driver when i clicked browse my computer for software then it shows a location and option to let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer then a box pops up showing model above that there is a little check box uncheck that two boxes will appear with manufacturer and model
Scroll samsung electronics and model samsung mobile composite device that is what you want to update the driver to...
I pulled the battery then re-entered download mode and windows to over installing the rest now it works fine. I would attach images but it will not let me for some reason. if anyone can help with that I will do it later.
THIS COULD POSSIBLY help with devices not being found on computers in bootloader or just on rom loaded and running..

Hey guys, i know it's a bit late now, but i had exactly the same problem with my gt-i9300 (got stuck on samsung splash screen and odin didn't recognize it in download mode) and just realised that everytime, i connected my phone to my PC in download mode, a message would appear that "Gadget Device" (or something like that) was connected. Then i searched in my device manager for the name of it (i found it under USB-Devices) and uninstalled the driver of it. As i connected it again with odin started it would install the driver automatically and *swoosh* odin recognized it.
A year and some later after the last post and I seem to be having this problem as well... I believe it was due to a bad flash at very low battery level which ended up in encryption failure ya da da, factory reset, clear/format everything and flash custom rom from SD because any other connection would not work.... then managed to get windows (many flavors inc. 7, 8 and 10) to connect as MTP or in USB debugging mode but Odin mode (download) just won't do anything... i put the phone in DL mode, nothing happens, no windows connection sounds, no changes in devices manager, even when searching for new hardware. I'd be very interested to know if anyone has had anything like that. I'd really like to flash stock to go back to a custom rom, flash twrp to replace cwm but all seems to no avail if i can't get a connection while in DL mode.
tried to install adb fastboot but also nada since no connection is being made.... might be something with DL mode gone awry with the bad flash... long story but OTA update from current ROM decided on its own to push update even though battery was at 5% and no user interaction ever happened...
we'll see what happens...

What is your specific model? Are you sure it is a genuine S III ?
Install KIES.. also.. make sure to run it as administrator..
Try a different usb port or cable.
Try on a different computer if you have one.
Reinstall drivers from a different source
These are all my suggestions..

WHAT? STOP.
KIES AND ODIN ARE COMPLETELY INCOMPATIBLE. If you want to have Odin working the ONE thing you must NOT do is to have KIES running or installed.
You must have the drivers installed, but for these you do NOT need to install KIES. Just download the standalone drivers package from http://developers.samsung.com
Samsung.com is the ONLY trustworthy source from the drivers. There are other "sources" for the drivers.
I don't have any USB device connected other than the mouse on PC. i have even tried on my laptop with no mouse.
I have downloaded pit file and uvjfd.tar two times from the forums.
I have tried flashing multiple times from both my PC & laptop using Odin 3.0 v1.0, v1.85, v3.07(latest), EZOdin v1.70 and installed Samsung USB drivers multiple times, even downloaded latest driver version from official Samsung Vibrant page.
I have tried flashing from all possible USB ports on my PC & laptop wherever the phone was being recognized. But now with the latest official Samsung Vibrant drivers, my phone is not being detected by any USB port on my PC.
But whenever I have flashed, Odin is stuck at Cache or Modem or recently(with latest samsung drivers), DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET !!
I have even tried flashing through Heimdall 1.3.1 but the zadig.exe shows the device only as 'Gadget Serial' no matter how many times I try, and installs the driver with device as Gadget Serial under libusb in Device Manager and I also tried by updating driver as Samsung Composite USB as mentioned in readme. Either Way Heimdall frontend will not flash and says "Failed to detect compatible download-mode device".
Edit: I tried with another USB cable, of LG GS500v, and Oh Lord Jesus, Odin flashed past it. Great, time to buy a new Samsung USB cable, now!

I am trying to overwrite CWM because I cannot get into its recovery no matter how many times I flash it. Odin just will not recognize my phone when I am in download mode. When my phone is on, it will allow the mass storage and that works but when in download mode, my PC says unrecognized devide. I have a feeling that is the problem and I have updated the drivers several times, especially from Samsung but to no avail. Does someone have a solution to this problem? I want to go to Avatar ROM with my phone which is Jelly Bean and have seen its possible but I feel CWM is holding me back.

Can you explain the steps your taking when you try to get into odin
Sent from my SGH-T959 using xda app-developers app
The steps I take is put the phone into download mode by pulling the battery and then holding both the volume up and down then reinsert the battery. It shows the download screen. I then start odin and I have tried version 1.7 and the latest version of 3.0.7. Then I plug my phone into the USB port and windows pops up saying unrecognized device. I have reinstalled drivers several times. Now to describe my desktop is that it is a pentium III 550 Mhz...and old computer and running Windows XP Professional. I am able to do the mass storage when the phone is on normally so it recognizes it that way though. I have tried different USB ports on it as well so just unsure. I have rooted the phone and have superuser app access. ROM manager was supposed to have flashed the recovery mode but it never goes into the CWR mode either and its version is 2.5.1.2 which I have seen work on these phones in videos on YouTube so guess I am trying a different route so I can play with the mods to find a ROM I like. I was going to try the Avatar ROM for the vibrant but just cannot seem to get to the point where I can get the ROM flashed. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Keep the battery in and lull up Odin. Cut off the phone and hold both volumes while inserting USB hopefully the computer will then recognize it

USB cable does make difference. And USB ports even on the same computer. Check also your phone's drivers. Finally, try out Heimdall one-click package for t959, it is more powerful and sensitive than Odin.

Great that you could get it to the download mode.
Follow these steps:
1. Make sure that you have the correct drivers installed for your Operating System. Preferably, download the latest drivers. You can verify when your device is recognized when connected in download mode.
2. Make sure you follow this thread for Odin flashing http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849028
3. If unable to flash using ODIN successfully, try with different USB ports, on same computer or a different one, say, a laptop.
4. If still unable to do so, try with different USB cables (any micro-usb should do).
In this way, you should by trying multiple alternatives at each step you should be able to eliminate the options and figure out what is really creating the problem in your flashing. Trust me my friend, this has not go anything to do with technology. just follow the steps, try alternatives and you would resolve this. Do post back on thread, if you have any queries.
I'm currently running CM 10.1 Android 4.2.2 JDQ39E build. I wanted to install the Samsung leaked 4.2.2 firmware, but strangely my phone is not getting detected in Odin any more.
Things i tried:
1. Update Samsung USB drivers.
2. Changed USB cable.
3. Changed USB port.
4. Tried using MTP/PTP modes.
Nothing worked . Strange thing is that my phone is displaying on Windows explorer and I am able to transfer files to it.
Kindly let me know what to do to fix this.

Yes, original Samsung USB cable. I'm doubting whether the new RSA key prompt which came in 4.2.2 is the reason for this. But that prompt is not coming up even while I disable and enable debugging mode.
wipe everything from recovery mode. once again check for usb debugging option. then reboot into download mode and connect to pc.
note: stop kies if running as a background process.

If you have updated using windows update then uninstall the drivers. Then turn off the internet connection and then install and let windows search 'preconfigured folders' and then every time it tries to update don't allow. And download that specific version of drivers that for or device. Download different versions.. One of them should work.
Apart from that, in cm10.1 you have enabled USB debugging right?
