A (horrible) phone repair experience with AT&T / Samsung - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

Within a month of buying my white Note last March, I noticed a little hairline crack in the bezel around the volume rocker. I didn't pay it much attention because it wasn't very noticeable, but then move forward to July and I have 2 additional hairline cracks, one at the headphone jack and another at the power button. This led me to believe that there might be a manufacturer issue with the phone because I had only dropped it once in the entire 5 months since owning it, and I had a thick TPU case on it at the time and no damage was incurred.
I did some googling on the issue and found NUMEROUS threads on XDA relating to bezel crack issues with the high-end Samsung phones. For example, here is one related to the Note:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1566356&page=2
I called AT&T and explained the issue and they told me that I could pay my deductible ($300 I think) and get a warranty replacement because they would consider it physical damage. No thanks. They told me to call Samsung. I called Samsung and they said they would repair the phone. This seemed like an admission to me that this was a manufacturer defect (but not reported to AT&T, thus no warranty replacement). I got my buddy to let me borrow his old phone while mine was out for repair. It took about three weeks, but I finally got it back, with the bezel replaced.
Now I didn't notice it right away, but one day I was swapping the battery and noticed the back cover was no longer longer staying snapped in at the middle tabs on the power button side (it wasn't like this before I sent it in). I called Samsung this past Monday (today is Wednesday) and told them of the problem and the guy suggested taking it down to an AT&T store and have the put one of the display phone's back cover on it to confirm if its just my cover.
I went down there about 2 hours ago and low and behold, it fit worse than mine. The guy even took a picture for me. I called Samsung back and told them of the situation and they gave me 3 options: 1) They could send me a replacement back cover, but they were currently out (huh?), 2) I could buy a replacement back cover for $10 and they would send it to me (I thought they were out?) and 3) I can send the phone back in for repair again.
Well options 1 & 2 are out because I just went to the AT&T store at their suggestion to see if it was an issue with the phone and not my battery cover. The supervisor on the phone even said that I shouldn't have sent my battery cover in during the first repair (which I accidentally did). I quickly pointed out that that had no bearing on the issue because the problem is with the frame of the phone! Option 3 sucks, but it would seem to be my only option.
So basically I am left with sending my phone back in for another 3+ weeks. I can't borrow the same phone that I used last time. Samsung won't issue a loaner. Called AT&T and they won't either. I hate to say it, but this may be my last Samsung purchase. I am not joining the Dark Side, but this whole experience has just soured me on Samsung.

ouch.....
I'm sorry to hear about that....
It makes you wonder what level of professionals are working with your high end device at the repair center....
I know that does'nt make things better, but they would'nt dare send it back a second time with "ANY" issues...would they ??
Best of luck to you Sir...i know how frustrating these issues can be......g

Wow - sorry for your pain!
On the lighter side... does anyone else find it funny that they apparently secure the display models at the store by attaching a lock to the $10, easily removed battery cover?

Update, here was their response to me sending a complaint of which the content was basically the same thing I posted in this Thread.
"Thank you for your inquiry. We understand that your device has hairline cracks of the bezel and due to this AT&T gave you a replacement phone and now the backcover does not fit to you phone. We sincerely apologize for your recent negative experience with our product"
Obviously they didn't even bother to read the entirety of the message. Typical.

My back cover never will quite seat right either, its just a poor design. If I play with it long enough (5 min or more) I usually can get it good enough for usage on the rare occasions I have it out of my case.

This is what happens to a TP when poorly packaged and sent around the globe

Purchased from B&H. Poorly packaged and not "Fragile" labelling. From the looks of things, it was at the bottom of a very heavy pile.

Damn, does it even boot?
It does actually. The left side of the touch screen doesn't work. I am also worried about any damage to the battery. I shouldn't have turned it on. If any hears of a house fire overnight in Australia caused by a faulty android tablet....
wow, lets hope not.
I would email/call the company you received it from and have them send you another and some money returned that is unacceptable. I'm sorry that happened I feel your pain
I am glad I canceled my B&H preorder early. Would have also had international overseas shipping.
Sorry to see that they messed up on your order. This is worse to look at than those drop test videos
yeah that is messed up. looks like its bent. that would be immediate cause for refund or exchange. of exchange they need to give you free overnight shipping for your troubles. that makes no sense to be in that condition.
Sod the screen..... If it's not locking up and wifi/gps performs OK you've got a keeper!

According to the picture comments, the UPS box was fine. The device inside the box wasn't. So it was broken prior to UPS I think.
B&H is one of the best companies you could ever deal with.
I've ordered many many items from them.
Always arrived doubled boxed and packed well.
And if you have a concern with your order,
they offer great customer service as well.
Call them.
It is too bad Asus didn't package it so the prime was near the center of the boxes. The way they box these the box top almost rests on the screen so any corner damage to the top of the box has a good chance of damaging the unit.

That's sad, waiting so long to found it like that.
If there anyone can talk about deal with B&H, it's me. A little off-topic but here is my story, sorry for the long reading.
3 years ago I was in NY on a roadtrip, I went to B&H to buy a Sony FX7 (around $2,800) camera. Bought the camera, the salesman never open the box, I took the camera box, and to my fault, I never open it because I was going to catch a flight.
3 hours later, I was scanning the box thru TSA screening in Newark, and the TSA lady told me, Sir what you have in that box, I reply, a Camera I bought 3 hours ago, she asked me to open the box because the're wasn't a camera.
So I proceed to open the sealed box, and to my surprise, I found two rocks inside the box that were hold with tape. You can imagine my face, I looked around to see if there was any hidden camera, thought was a joke. I asked for a police officer to be witness.
So the situation was, bags were checked, so I had to change the flight, rent a car, an place to stay overnight. Next morning I went to B&H and explain the situation.
They kept me waiting, an hour later the sales man told me to go upstairs to a small office, with a lot of security cameras and two guys, one was the Store manager and the other one was on casual clothes. They asked what happened. As soon i finished, the guy took out a Police ID Badge, he took all my stuff, and my wallet. They threat me like a theft. I told them to call the airport, they call the airport, my friends that returned home, the warehouse, UPS.
After 4 hours of questions and all that stuff, was the worst situation in my life, been threatened like a theft, with nobody to help you, after you bought a 3k camera and got two fcking rocks. They decided to gave me the camera, because they find that the box with rocks weight the same as one with the camera, and the rocks were placed in a way that holding the box was the same feel as the one with camera. So was an inside job and a good one.
They gave me the camera, I opened in front of everyone. Lesson learned.
An aussie prime is boomerang shaped? who woulda thunk it
Seriously tho, sorry for you misfortune.

I have just spoken with them. I will see if you are right!
Its going to take at least a week to get an answer from them, according to the guy on the phone.
I have purchased from them in the past and had no issues.
Dear God, I just cried a bit.
Looks like that was packaged much better than Best Buy! They put them in a non padded bag, yes just a bag, with no padding no bubble wrap, nothing.
When I returned mine to Best Buy, I told the lady:
Me : "Can you believe that Best Buy shipped me a $500 tablet in a bag with no padding or anything?"
CS Rep : "Its because it is such a Sturdy Box!"
Me: "The Box may be sturdy, but the screen is covered by about 1/8 inch cardboard inside the box and that is it. One drop and that screen is toast!"
CS Rep: "Well, there isn't much padding in the box, you are right!"
Heck, when you open a prime, the tablet is right there the minute you take the top off. There is no padding on top of the tablet, and Best Buy just throws them in a bag that says nothing.
It isn't marked Fragile, it isn't marked anything!
Pretty sad!
A week to get an answer. That is unacceptable. I would call my credit card company and request a charge back and do business elsewhere.

Isn't the latest rumor that the iPad 3 will have a curved screen? Looks like ASUS beat them to it!
Sorry, OP, that sucks.
huh, that's terrible! mine came in some stupid bubble wrap envelope not even a box, i'm surprised mine didn't end up looking like that i also wouldn't be surprised that some of these supposed factory defects such as screens coming apart and cables becoming disconnected is a result of the shipping, seems like everyone that ships these things seems to think the asus packaging is enough to with stand the rigors of fed ex and ups delivery.....

My prime's screen cracked

So something strange happened to me. I did nothing weird when I picked up my prime but of a sudden, crack.
My prime's screen broke in two over the length of the body.

I hope that the warranty wont be a problem, but i'm not sure how to handle it.
Should I go to asus directly or go to the shop where I bought it (mediamarkt nl)
I'm also interested if i'm the first person were the screen cracks when the prime is picked up.
There have been a few odd issues with screen cracking.

Another broken screen
Just posted on another thread about my TF201 screen turning up cracked when I took it out my laptop bag this morning. It was mounted in the dock at the time and hadn't been dropped or mishandled - just carried to work and taken out.
Unfortunately, the screen isn't covered by warranty and the local ASUS service provider (in Australia) quoted $400 for the repair (parts, labour, shipping). Not sure what I'm going to do (the crack is in a corner and is small enough to live with) but I must say I've lost a lot of confidence in ASUS over this purchase (even before the screen broke I was having crash/reboot problems and crummy WIFI reception).
Is the crack only on the inside(can you feel the crack with your fingernail)?
It may be due to heat, it has happened with other devices, and if that's the case and they don't cover it its really f'd up.
I can only feel the crack on the far right side.
However heat would be a strange reason for me because I didn't touch my tablet for more than an hour so before the fatal pick up.

There is a guy with a spontaneous crack in the upper right corner
According to Asus there had been to much pressure on that spot.
Maybe he pinched too hard to get better wifi/ gps signal.
No warranty, cost him 142,81 euros to fix.
Hope you are not the same guy.
Wow, that's really similar to mine. I just sent mine in for a warranty claim. Not sure they'll approve it, but this gives both of us more ammo for our claim. I've got post at the following link with a video on youtube as well.

And a pic:
Don't all of these seem to be originating from the top right, or at least in the top-half of the screen? (Assuming Asus logo is top left). I wonder if it's a hardware revision issue.. Do you all have similar serial numbers?
Wow, that's really frustrating..
So I guess no storing the tablet in the dock (at least not closed, anyway).
so far my screen hasn't ever cracked. But whenever the picture keeps flickering/going fussy/shaking, i'll not put pressure on the edges to try and fix it.
I'm also going to keep paying my extended monthly cover plan too just in case!
Mine also has a crack in the upper right. It is only noticeable in the right light and even then barely, its about 2 inches long, for now. It is the only thing I have a complaint about. Everything works fine on mine except the GPS and I can live without that.

I don't know about the serial number but from the look of the thread that buster6070 posted it's more of a dock problem.
My serial is C10KAS0XXXXX

You're not left-handed are you?
Do any of you think this might be related to where one would grab the tablet to open it up?
that's so strange.. you'd think if the crack was anywhere, it'd be where the dock holds the tablet.. I think I might stick some tiny felt pads on the dock where the top (Asus label) of the tablet comes in contact.
My serial # is BCOKAS0XXXXX
My ATP is in the mail on it's way to a service center. But I've gone ahead and emailed ASUS with a link to this thread. I emailed their "Escalation Mailbox" and simply requested they take a serious look at my tablet before dismissing it as "CID". Also letting them know that this isn't an isolated situation. I would suggest everyone with this problem do the same. It's just to easy for them to dismiss a cracked screen as damaged done by the user.
My wifes cracked this weekend in the upper left corner, it is ALWAYS docked and almost always on the dinning room table, she uses it as a laptop replacement. There is not a scratch on it! I sent a PM to Gary, I heard nothing back yet. If this is gorilla glass, then they have problems! My wifes cracked in the black area of the glass only, it is hard to even see it, but it is cracked. Hers had really bad light bleed but she did not care, I never would have lived with it since day one. Asus better find a fix for this one, or just recall them all, these problems keep growing.....
BCOKAS serial number
This is not a thread I wanted to see...
I have a BCKOSA serial number....I hope that I don't become an active member of this thread....
This makes me so freaking nervous that one day I'll have a cracked screen.
And how could warranty not cover this? I'd ***** my way into it being covered, if there's no evidence of the user dropping or mishandling it then it defaults to being considered defective doesn't it?
Yours is the only case I've heard of that the Prime wasn't docked. Seems to me like the frame is letting the screen flex too much, but how you'd keep it from doing so I have no idea.

Yes it is all ways shut when not used. I always shut mine also, but I don' t use mine as much as she uses her's all the time. No damage to case or to inner area of dock. I just don't know, it must be a stress issue. Is gorilla glass this fragile?

Dropped my Note, squaretrade warranty tale

Thought this might be interesting for some to see how a Square trade accident coverage situation goes. I will update the thread as new events occur. If this isn't kosher to some, please delete. I searched the forums hoping to find a similar thread but found nothing.
I accidentally dropped my phone in my basement Sunday the 19th and filled out a claim form online on the 20th at approximately 12:30 pm central time. I was asked if I preferred to be mailed a refurbished phone of same or similar specs but since I use my phone for work I chose repair mainly in hopes that they can fix it and I won't have to go through hassles of installing a tibu backup. If for some reason they opt not to repair it figure it'd be nice to start fresh with a new Note. I entered my credit card information to be charged the $99 deductible to begin the process.
After filing the claim you are given information that they will contact you within 1-2 business days from submitting. Currently I have not been contacted after 1.5 business days have gone by (full day today, half the day before). They state to call them if I am not contacted in this time but after 15 minutes of being on hold I figure I can waste time doing that tomorrow when a full 2 days are up. The current status online is that an agent is being assigned to my case.
About the phone: It fell about two feet from my couch to the basement cement floor and cracked the lcd diagonally across. There is a chip in the top right corner of the ceramic and dents in the metal around it. It was housed in an elago case which I now regret as it protected nothing. Phone is still functional and has been backed up for when I am able to send it in.
Well that was quick. Moments after posting I received an email with the prepaid next day air UPS label to send it to their depot in LA. What I am hoping is that if they choose to repair the lcd that the chipped corner will be addressed as well as it snags my shirt. Fingers crossed.
Definitely interested to see how this works out for you. Wish you nothing but the best. Good luck.
Ya i would love updates on this too. I have so many warrantees through them but have never had to use it yet.
I always read about how people bust their phone so easily and it baffles me that I've never broken a screen yet. I had my iPhone 4 in my lap sitting in a van and got out forgetting it was their and it fell off my lap face down onto concrete and no scratches to the screen. I had my Note in my hand and accidentally hit my hand on a car door when I was getting out and it bounced onto the concrete below, face down. Got a couple chips on the bezel but that's about it. But yours busted falling two feet off the couch. So weird....

What was weird was I expected it not to be broken. It's definitely not the first time it's slipped out of my hands, but it's been a trooper and kept in tact until the short drop.
Anywho...
Got bored and google searched the place they are having me mail it to. It's these guys: http://www.cfrepaircenter.com
Some spotty reviews online, so fingers crossed. Wouldn't be too happy to spend $100 + original cost of the warranty to get a shoddy repair. I'm going to add a note about the broken ceramic and jacked up metal portion in hopes that it is addressed. I'll post pictures tomorrow to show a before and after.
It depends a lot on how the phone falls. The corners of an LCD screen tend to be weak spots, so it can often crack if it lands on a corner which sounds like was the case here.
With this phone the LCD, front glass, and bezel (the silver band) are one unit. So a cracked glass = entire front replaced. The part costs about $200.

There are a lot of little hairline cracks in the LCD as well that don't show too well. Using a Captivate right now and even with CM10 Jelly Bean, I know I'm going to be missing the Note immediately. Off it goes in the morning!
Is that after putting your note back to stock?
You could sneeze on this bezel and it dents it is weak....its unbelievable I am on my third and the bezel has had issues on all three after one minor drop each...the things soft like cookie dough

I haven't bothered doing more than rooting and unlocking it for travel. I need my phone 24/7 for work, and stock hasn't bothered me one bit (ICS or GB) on this. The phone is encrypted, if security was the question.
The finale!
Well, I got my phone back today. Looks terrific. I'll post pics later if needed, but if you know what a new Note looks like, that's what it looks like. Even arrived with the annoying little stickers that came on the bezel. Looks like they even replaced the plastic battery cover.
One minor thing is the phone was returned reset to factory due to my refusal to give up the encryption password. It's not a big deal as I ran a backup, just thought I'd mention it. I understand they needed to do QC before calling it fixed.
Have a new Otterbox Commuter case on the way tomorrow!
Decent service, fast turnaround, and pretty impressed all around. A tad bit expensive at $100 deductible but considering the cost without accident insurance and having to install the LCD myself, this was well worth it.
Thanks for sharing!

Awesome thanks for the updates
I just purchased a note and was thinking about whether to get this or not for it. This was great, maybe I will get one now. Glad to hear everything worked out for you.

[Q] Samsung Repair w/ 0X1 & Custom rom?

I had a bad day took a bath and...i fell asleep so the phones corner (were headset plug is) got dipped into the warm tub. Luckly the phone still responds there is no major damage and I see...NO damage or proof water got inside. All waterseals were not voided... it just glitches out on screen and it scares me.
unfortunately its on 4.4.2 kitkatkiller & 0x1 does anyone know if samsung will still fix it or replace it?

One thing you can try is unplugging the battery and leaving the phone in a jar of rice overnight. That has been known to suck the water out of electronics and may help with the glitchy screen. I doubt it'll solve the problem, but it's worth a shot.
As a rule of thumb, I don't recommend that people try to do the Samsung Warranty on their own mess-ups. To quote their warranty website:
Warranty Conditions
...
2. SAMSUNG will repair during its warranty period any product that malfunctions under normal operation, used according to the user manual instructions and the purpose they were designed for.
...
Situations that void this Warranty Coverage
...
6. Damage to the product caused by improper operation or use, by not following user manual instructions or defects caused by external sources, impact, paint cosmetic damage in general, scratches, fissures, evidence of residues of water, sweat or food inside the unit.
...
9. Damage to the product caused by loss or accident such as fire, voltage fluctuations, vandalism, water, sand insects or similar.

The warranty doesn't cover water damage or user error. It only covers manufacturer defects or repairs caused by "normal" activities.
Yes, your water stickers aren't betraying the fact that your phone has water damage, but the fact of the matter is that you are, effectively, trying to cheat your way into a free, refurbished phone (on Samsung's dime).
I could go on and on about these types of practices (in fact, I have), but I'm not going to today. I'll just end with a quote that I find applicable to this situation:

I was not hoping to get a fix on samsungs dime since I am well aware its in BER status now, it would be a costly fix but maybe worth it over a new N3 though sometimes BER status devices do go over the MSRP for repair cost...I also heard sprint can do repairs though and charges a fee ontop of it for convenience...but I have no idea if anything else is damaged with the phone.

I'm not sure what BER status is, but if you're willing to pay for the repairs, then my last post was not applicable.
Also, if you're willing to pay for the repairs, Samsung (or Sprint) will be able to fix your phone, regardless of what ROM you have. As far as if it'll be less costly than a new phone, I would expect so, but I can't say how much it'd be.
I still recommend the rice trick and see if that helps.

BER status is what samsung marks devices that have been repaired by 3rd party companies or opened by the user = Beyond Economic Repair. Which means you pay a huge out of pocket premium to the fix versus normal servicing.
I did not have TEP on sprint but the lady added it for me even though I was 35 days into plan and i purchased this phone off swappa, so repair will be free (i think?) unless it needs to be claimed which is 50~200 apparently...either way cheaper then BER service from sammy itself.
and to be a good girl, I wet a cotton swab and activated the water damage indicator on battery so they know its water damaged, even though I wasnt about to because they threw me to curb over intl. use...

Just do a claim on http://phoneclaim.com/sprint the deductible would be 200 just say you dropped it in water and don't say anything about it being rooted to them. And they will send you a new one next day no problem

I took it to local store instead. Phone decided to be perfectly functional, even the guy was like "oh nice rom but how do you see stuff?" but right when I was walking out the phones vibrator turned on. and did not stop, you tap it it turns off you tap it again it turns back on....so they have it at the moment.
edit: they called me said there was no internal damage, etc only some "debris?" and he blew it out and the phones been working fine. So my butt got saved on this one....maybe.

I bought this watch and a Note edge to go with it 3 months ago. The watch is currently at Samsung repair because it wouldnt charge. It wouldnt charge and I figured out that the contacts werent making a good connection. Couple days later the back of the phone where the cradle snaps and hooks on broke and now the cradle has to be rubberbanded on to charge. Samsung just told me it wasnt covered under warranty even though it is a defect. Spent over 1500 with them and they find any reason to void the warranty. Since it had physical damage regardless of how terrible their design, the warranty is void. The watch barely makes it through the day so you need to charge it about twice a day. The geniuses their thought that plastic snapping into cheap plastic would be durable. Also, when you reply to text it doesnt update the phone. I really love the look of the watch and if the features worked I would be happy. But they want me to pay 242.00 to put a new back on the watch. The Note edge has a green vertical line that wont go away and I'd have to mail it in and wait till they fixed and mailed it back. Samsung is all gimmick. They want to force brand customer loyalty by leveraging your investment in them but do nothing to retain it when their products break under normal use and within 90 days.

Jeez! Looking at your picture you must have pulled that off with some force! People are reporting the tiny clips on the battery charger are breaking but this is the first time I have seen the actual watch backplate broken.
Nevertheless this should be covered under warranty as you say. I am guessing they are refusing because they believe this is damage caused by you and not a defect. Looking at your pic I can see why! But hey, (before you slate me) for the record I do believe you, as why else would you report it here on XDA.
Good luck though mate, I hope they fix this for you.
Not mention both your Gear and band look pretty beat up from use/wear.
Fixed, for a lot less than the $242 Samsung wanted
I fixed it with $20 in supplies and a dremel. Now it charges again. I may be a little harder on my watch than most but its still a terrible design for something that needs to charge daily, twice if you actually use it
Now I just need to clean it up.

Really? Other than the defect in design and plastic what part looks pretty beat up? The band isnt even in focus.
gear s broken cradle
I went on Samsung's Facebook page and posted that nobody buy a gear s until Samsung fixes the defective cradle,i got im right away.I sent them photos of my broken cradle, watch charging on a vitamin bottle.the gear s works fine, the cradle is the problem. It is a warranty problem fix at no cost to us.Everybody go to samsung's face book and tell them what you are going thru..DO NOT SEND YOUR WATCH IN FOR EVAULATION.

Not calling you out but a couple people here and on another forum that had the charging cradle receiver break on the Gear side and/or have corroded charging contacts have sworn they've "babied their device." Quite a few of the pics these people posted make the device look far from "babied."
I've had mine for three months and charge it twice a day like you. Other than a small mark on the bottom most receiver from the repeated friction of the tab sliding on and being pulled off it looks new. I also use a screen protector, rotate different bands, swap out between two different OEM charging cradles, and clean my Gear front and back with warm soapy water every time I put it on after charging. Whether that helps delay some issues other's are reporting will be tested over time.
I'm not defending the charging cradle design BTW. It's pretty crude for a high-end device. Between this and another forum I've only seen two or three instances where the receiver on the Gear broke vs. a higher proportion of the tabs breaking on the easily replaceable charging cradle.
Easy workaround fix.
I figured out a very easy work around for the broken charger problem which I have myself. Close and lock the watch band strap. Place the charger in position like it would if it was not broken. Use an appropriate size pill bottle to put pressure on the charger without over stretching the watch strap. Now you can use the cradle with or without the charge cable in order to charge the watch, and no need to buy another charger which will probably also break.
I beat the hell out of my watch. Had it for over a year now and have gone through 3 cradles. The OEM (with battery) broke at month 4, since then I've ordered 2 off brand ones. One of those broke about a week into use, the other is still going strong.
That all said I don't see how the back plate of the watch itself could fail like that even with heavy use EXCEPT for design flaw.
I'm a chef and wear mine and charge it at work. 12 hours a day, 5-6 days a week this thing gets beat against steel, iron and all manner of dead (and tasty) animal. It's so bad that I have gone through 5 screen protectors over this year and I've never had so much as a Crack in the device itself.
That damage could absolutely not be caused by user misuse.
dafaq did u do with that watch, i have my for 3 months like now im wearing it constant and i work with it, and is do far in like a box out look, the one thing what its beaten is the band i order a one from ebay it was cheap so no complains there
Velcro
On my Gear 2 using a bad aftermarket charger Velcro was a very easy way to charge. Glued a strip to the back of the changer and wrapped snug around the watch and charges every time.
I expect to use that work around on this Gear S at some point.
