Buying the Droid Razr Maxx worth it? - Motorola Droid RAZR

Hi,
I'm an LG optimus 2x user. The phone's hackability is insane and off the charts. What I would like to know from the community is whether it's worth going for this phone or not. Here are my questions.
1) Can this phone be rooted?
2) If rooted, can the bootloader be unlocked?
3) Custom kernels and roms?
4) Really, how much is the battery life *mine is on 3g enabled, auto sync all day*?
5) Price vs. feature comparison?
6) Do updates come on a regular basis?
Thanks.

I can answer some few questions.
1. Yes
2. No
3. check development section
6. No, not from Motorola

If you're looking for a strong development community, RAZR MAXX isn't for you. It will come eventually but right now there isn't a wide variety of custom options. There are a few roms and the devs are working on getting around the locked bootloader. I mean they have but no stable rom yet, kernels are working though. It's just a young development community at the moment, if you're impatient I wouldn't. The phone itself kicks ass though, battery life is awesome, camera is good, once you root & get on a custom ics rom you have a faster slightly customized version of stock. Just my opinions, I came from the OG EVO which similarly has a really strong development community. I was a little disappointed at first but I love my phone and I see tremendous potential from the developers.

Well, while I love to see a strong dev community, it isn't a deal breaker for me. If the phone works fine with the stock software then I'm fine with tit.

It totally does, good things in the future for sure.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I have the same question.
I am looking to buy a Razr Maxx or a Galaxy S2 for my mothers birthday. I am not buying them from a shop and thus I would like to ask if you think Razr Maxx is comparable to he Galaxy S2 in terms of ease of use and features.
I will not be buying them new, but so far I have not had any problem with them.
My question is also if you think Motorola will release ICS or even JB to this device or if we are left with the current Gingerbread (I guess, not sure) on it?
Thank you all for your help.

Moto release ICS.
I dont know if they Release JB but I dont think so

i came from the galaxy s2 and am using the maxx at the present moment. in terms of features and use, if just using stock roms, samsung would win out in terms of design and just looking prettier, in terns if performance and overall usage they're roughly the same. the maxx however, trounces the s2 in terms of battery life. and i do mean TROUNCES. you get close to 2 times the battery life as compared to the paltry 1650mah battery that comes with the s2.

Battery life is excellent with the MAXX.
Here is a screen shot I took last night. I had received and made phone calls, played a game for about 30 minutes, and received and sent text messages. Also had read some news online for about 20 minutes and checked email.
I'm using the hotplugx governor, sio scheduler and Juice Defender Ultimate.

gotta love that rezound love!
Is that app, correct? Cause the nexus and galaxy a II beats out the rezound. I don't get why.
PS.... Love my phone and wouldn't trade it for one of those two.

Funny, my girlfriend has the same case, lol.
Never used that benchmark app- but is it skewed by the fact that the nexus is running ics or is it purely hardware? Either way- I'm not too worried bout it- This phone flies now and will even more when we get aosp ics.
It looks like you're running ziggys kernel, can i ask what governor?
Yes the app is accurate.. I've gotten close to 6,800 w/ ziggy's kernel with performance governor. But don't freak out just cause the gnex has a lower score.. Benches are for fun! My friends Gnex at stock speeds on the HD rom runs just as smooth.

haha she rants and raves about how she wants Siri and the only reason she got an iPhone was so she could go on Facebook (she's 20). I show her all the crap I can do with my Rezound and she's like wtf why can't my phone do that? I showed her the two Siri clones (Iris and Cluzee) and explained that they were free and basically any Android phone could get that and we've had text to speech and speech to text for years. What really started it was at the end of last month we were in NYC; we were stuffed way back in TGI Friday's and she was complaining that she couldn't get on Facebook, I mentioned the Samsung commercial where they make fun of the iPhone and then was like wait I can show you. I streamed the commercial at 720P and it loaded instantly, she loved that!
*bump*
updated first post
Read a few reviews running that benchmark saying its inaccurate because its not fully optimized for ICS as well
That's what I was thinking and I looked at their app in the market and it doesn't mention anything about ICS, but then again two phones running the same (major) version of ICS should give reasonable results.

so with a locked bootloader we will not be able to get root and install custom roms period, or its just harder to do?
also since Moto is now under Google, wouldnt that effect things? as in maybe they will release it with an unlocked bootloader? what was the first phone they release couple of days ago i think its the atrix something? does it have locked bootloader?

Galaxy Nexus for just $50

I have an X2 that I have modded who knows how many times. Aside from the annoying locked boot loader I have really liked the X2. However I now have the opportunity to get a Galaxy Nexus for only $50 ($100 - company $50 discount). I only hesitate because I think the X2 is about a big a phone as I want & the Nexus is a bit bigger (length x width). I know its a much better phone, but once i start where will it stop? A 7in. Tab in my pocket & a Bluetooth headset? I'd like to have a phone the same size as an X2 , 4.3" (maybe bigger screen as long as the phone itself isn't bigger(width x height x thickness)with perhaps higher resolution,720x1280?, of course a faster CPU & RAM would be nice too. The 32mb on the Nexus has plenty of space. The rezound was a good size, but too thick. So what do you all think?$50 for a better but not really desired since its a bigger phone or wait untill something the size of the X2 with much better specs & not Motorola comes along?

if you want a good dev community, GET A GNEX!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the dx2 is good but the gnex is super sweet. the rezound is also a good choice (what i have) one of our devs cracked the RIL so we will have a full AOSP rom soon
Uh yeah.. For $50 I wouldn't be thinking twice about asking. It doesn't sound like you will have to give up the dx2, so you would still be able to go back to it if you wanted to.

Even tho the nexus is larger, it feels smaller to me
Thinner
Lighter
fits well in the hand.
Go to a vzw store or find someone who has it and hold it for a bit.
Then also think about what it would be like to have 4.04 at the very least and you could load 4.1.1 if you want and enjoy buttery goodness and also, the screen, my god is the screen beautiful...so much clearer than x2. Amoled FTMFW

I wish they'd make bigger phones again. Make the X2 TWICE the thickness and give me a freakin battery that lasts a couple days, now THAT would be freakin awesome! to actually have a phone with sharp edges you can actually hold on to! I hate how all these phones feel the need to be stupid skinny.
I miss my big-ass analog phone that I could actually hold against my ear with my shoulder, and the ONLY thing it could do was send and receive phone calls... but it did that with MUCH better audio quality... so what if it was eight POUNDS, I could hammer freakin nails in with it and not break it. I thought the gnex was an awesome idea until I felt one in my hand. it just feels like cheap chinese garbage that will slide right out of my dry calloused hands every time I use it.
I want a phone that will break what I throw it at and not the other way around!
I'd def get the GNEX, support for the DX2 is such a small community.
For sure get the nexus! If you don't like it you can always switch back to your old phone with just a transfer of the numbers by your cell provider right? That way you can see which one you like best, play around with both ya know?

Hi,
I am planning to get a Droid Razr, XT 910. Now, I had a galaxy s2 2 years ago but sold it 1 year ago. Being disconnected from the cell phone world, I was wondering the following:
1. Is it as good as S2 in terms of dev support?
2. Is it true if I put a JB ROM on it and try to go back to ICS, I will BRICK?
3. What are the pros and cons of this phone?
Please give me your honest opinions, thank you

1. No
2. Probably not. If by bricking you mean hardware failure.
3. compared to s2: Slim. Strong. Splashproof. Better battery life. Nicer pics. Slower overall. Slower camera. Less custom roms. Non removable battery. Otherwise it's very much like s2, so it is only a matter of taste.

Unless you opt for the Razr Maxx though. But you could go with Lenovo or Galaxy Note 2 to have the same battery capacity. but if you want the best of the best on battery life, Razr Maxx is really worth it.

A friend of mine has S2 and we just compared it last night. From what he told me I got the impression he was more excited about Razr than his S2. Huuuge difference is the quality of the body. Razr feels really better in your hand thanks to the kevlar used on the back. It is slightly wider (1mm), taller, yet really slim and it feels better in your pocket than S2.
1. definitely not. I used S1 for more than two years and was part of the forum dealing with Galaxy S (1,2,3, Note, etc) phones and the community around Galaxy S phones is much wider. Dev support is better for S2, no question about that.
2. Yes...but if I understand it correctly only if you try to go from official JB OTA back to official ICS OTA (doesn't apply for custom roms based on ICS/JB - correct me anybody if I am wrong). There is no root for official JB OTA yet, so if you do the stupid thing like me (being happy that I got JB OTA when I turned the phone on for the first time) and go straight to JB, you wont be able to play with your phone yet. What more, I read that JB consumes more battery life (and it really do, you can get over 24h easily but it should be more)...therefore I would recommend update to ICS and then root the phone (there is root for ICS) and do the JB update manually with a custom rom so you wont be stucked on JB like me. There is a process to go from rooted ICS to rooted JB thanks to Rootkeeper. Than you are just fine.
3. Personally I was deciding between S2 and Razr and now I am happy to have the Razr. It is really awesome phone and do a lot of things faster than S2. It also (since JB) has less customization by the manufacturer.
Pros: everything around HW is perfect. It is just incredible phone to hold in your hand and it is really smooth - no hesitation.
Cons: not everything around SW is perfect...as I mentioned before. What really iritates me is the name of the carrier in the notification bar - it covers almost third of NotBar (Vodafone CZ) and there is not much space left for notifications. There is no way to remove it without root (which is not for JB OTA). There are no quick toggles in the notification area (it is due to JB, but more customization by motorola would be just fine in this manner).
Also my native language is not English (as you can tell from this comment), but Czech, and Motorola is kind of giving us middle finger and there is no more languages for the phone than en, fr, sp, and other major languages of the world...really dont understand this....while in the android there is like almost hundred of languages it is not in motorola. Battery level is only in tenths...it never tells you the exact percentage but only that you have 90/80/70/60, etc % left. I hope it's different in custom roms because this kind of information is really useless.
Big dissapointment was the display. Used to use Galaxy S i9000 for more than two years and motorola razr uses the same display technology - Super AMOLED. I thought displays would be the same, but they are not. Colors on Razr are more dark than on i9000 (even at maximum brightness). It really sucks - what really demostrates the difference is the Facebook (or Messenger) app, where the blue color is dark. I did a little workaround to help it. I used an application called "Filter Your Screen" and applied a lighter filter on the display and now the colors are more beautiful (I tried to make it more like IPS displays and it really looks like when I compare it to my Nexus 7 with IPS) and more likeable for my eyes.
I hope this helps you. There are a lot of cons, but in general...the phone is just awesome and I am happy that I decided to buy Moto instead of S2! I am a huge fan of listening to music on my phone through headphones whereever I go so I need a good audio output and that one on Galaxy S2 sucks big time (without adjustments to SW). That was like one of the most important reasons not to buy S2.
Put it like this, if battery life is your be all end all, Razr Maxx is your choice.

I see alot of people commenting that the htc one is bad and that the S4 is better well wtf you doing in the One section GTFO to S4's section...nobody here wants to know nothing about that plastic sh*tty ass phone!!!
Here's my two cents, I owned the s4 for a week and thought the ui was so weird, cool phone in some areas but I guess it was too much for me I like the one's ui better it's not so overwhelming
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app

Your giving off that same bias one-sided opinion. Both devices have their own pros and cons and satisfy different needs of users. The S4 is for those who want higher performance, removeable batteries, SUPER AMOLED Display, extra storage space as apps these days seem to be taking up more and more space, featured camera, etc, while in my perspective the One is for those who want a high performance device, with a screen that has great visibility in daylight, good sounding speakers, with a really slick design. Obviously the OS's come into play too, each one offers their own feel and look.
I'm very happy with my S4. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I really value the ability to have my 64GB SD card so i can install more than just a few of my favourite apps, i have 3 batteries so as soon as one dies i can pop in one of the backups and i'm back to a full charge instantly and ready to go. I like the development of this device, and i like to have the strongest hardware with absolutely ZERO lag.
Its great that you like your One, to each person their own, but don't be immature about it and let peoples comments get to you. I gave my reasons for my choice, and you know why you purchased your device over the S4, so it doesn't really matter what anyone else has to say about it.

Please explain this "higher performance". The S4 doesn't offer any performance improvements, as a matter of fact it has a severe hindrance compared to the One due to all of the features Samsung packed in the phone. Lag lag lag.. you can read about it in just about every tech review out there
The One performs better. Period.

On Stock I would agree with that completely, but as i mentioned theres great development for the S4, and the device can OC higher. I personally choose AOKP as my preferred ROM and theres by no means any way a One could run smoother than my S4 on my current ROM. I compare it to my friends Nexus 4 which is considered to be the smoothest device out there and is said to be 100% lag free, but my S4 is just as smooth if not smoother and opens and closes apps faster. I don't care about sacraficing Sammy's features, and i use Nandroids to switch to TW when the rare occasion comes that i want to use touchwiz. Without all the Sammy junk this device is a pure tank. I havent had the slightest microstutter in the few weeks ive ran this ROM, and that's what is most important to me. I'm not saying the One is slow, but the only way this device could get any faster would be a faster processor to open and close apps just those milliseconds faster which are already practically instantaneous.
Yes but you're insinuating that somehow the S4 performs "better". I don't see where you can make that statement, when you're comparing a non-stock ROM to stock. Have you compared the HTC One on AOSP to the S4?
I doubt there would be a "higher performance" with the S4. Bottom line is there is zero advantage in performance when comparing the same set up on both.
This is a flame bait thread. I'm putting forward a motion to have this closed.
