File compression/storage capacity - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If u compress files on ur sdcard such as ebooks , videos ...etc, that should help increase the storage space on the sdcard, right?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

if you zip them up then the files are unexecutable until extracted which defeats the purpose of compression.

Its not going to increase the space no.
What it will do is decrease the space the files use but you will lijely have to uncompess them to use them.
E.g
You have a 8GB sdcard, dosnt matter what you do it will still store 8GB of data.
But if your 1GB video is compressed to 700MB you will go from 7GB to 7.3GB free space

Good, that's what I wanted to know. I'm just looking to makethe files smaller in size. I don't mind the extra steps, just as long as I can fit more in the closet. I have a lot of data stored on my sdcard and don't want to get rid of files just yet, so I figured I compress them.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium

If they truly are useless files, just zip them up!

Most videos, images and such does not shrink during compress. They are already compressed in their native file format.

No you don't have to have same sdcard that came with phone, I transfered the contents of the sdcard that came with the phone, to a class 10 16GB sdcard and can the watch movie just fine.
Before you copy your files make sure show hidden files is selected, if not they wont be copied over, I only use Linux, but I am sure windows has an options to show hidden files or show all files something like that.
The Green Hornet files are in the root directory in a hidden directory called ./data that is about 1.8 Gig in size. It wasn't visable until I checked show hidden files in Linux Explorer.
After I did that, then I was able to watch the movie AFTER creating and HtcWatch account. But before that I would get no movie found.
It is hidden like said above. Go to tools/FOLDER OPTIONS/ENABLE HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS and it will be visible to move .

well for those interested... green hornet is attached. the movie is 1gb+ so slow download

Interesting tidbit

So, trying to upload a picture to the forums via the mobile app. When the phone has no SD card or youre set to store pics on the phone it saves as PNG or something like that which wouldn't allow for upload. I had to change in esFile to JPEG. But, now that I have a SD card and am saving to it, ALL my pics have converted and continue to be saved as JPEG. Now uploads are no big deal.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
Interesting. Kind of ironic since PNG files will be bigger than JPG.
While it may be useless for upload to XDA, PNG is a better format than JPG. Both use compression but PNG is lossless, JPG is lossy even on its lowest compression setting.
That is what i posted as a problem as well. But you fpund a solution. So wherr do i force the pics to the sd card. Problem here is i have always had an sd card installed.

In the camera settings i believe. Funny thing is though is that the pics i have on the internal memory also are JPEG now. That i dont know how it happened. But regardless it makes posting here that much easier and that's all that matters.... now if i coukd just figure out why those pics have to get "resized " when i send them as MMS....
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using XDA
tried what you did and still cant post a screen shot...its kind of annoying really. I actually was a able to before but all of a sudden i get the file extension error now!?
If using Tapatalk, just click "Tapatalk hosted". The pic will look much better anyway. Haven't used XDA app in a while, but I assume its the same, no?

apps that can save data to file

are there any android apps that can save data to files then copy to folder or sd card? for example, I want to take some notes and save to txt files in notepad and save to sd card.
I found almost none of android apps can save.
any suggestion? can any list some apps can save data ?
Why not just cloud ur notes. They r much safer that way. Especially incase something goes wrong with ur sdcard

how? I can't even find where the data stored in the phone storage. the app simply save a line of data to a sticky note inside it, can never take it out. this means it permanently store in the app and I can only view the data inside that specific app. that is not good.
What kind of data r u referring to

Installing large files

I hv a 64 gb class 6 sd card which has been working fine. However sometimes when I try to install a large file, it won't install it right away. It takes several attempts to get it to install. Why is this happening? I seem to remember someone saying before that titanium back up may be causing it. Can someone please elaborate or could someone please put me on the right path. Thanks

I dint know EVO 3D supported up to 64 Gigs

How big of a file are we talking? Most apps are kept below 100mb anyway.

Managing free space

I have around 3gb free of internal storage. How is everyone managing their storage? Are yall using any apps to delete cache files? Refer to the pic for what my storage looks like.

I never even worry about space. I have an 8gb sdcard and I out downloads on that but beyond that I just let the phone do its thing

I put everything I could on my external sdcard: Camera default directory, Titanium Backup, game data, and ubuntu image (complete linux installer).

Not many big apps installed eh?
Install a couple big games and watch internal storage go bye-bye. So much for letting the OS do its thing.
I use DirectoryBind to redirect big apps to my sdcard. App isn't perfect, but it works.

Actually I thought I had a decent amount of apps installed. I have 16 games but I dont play the big ones usually since I hate most on screen controls. Thanks for the app though.

Storage analyser or grid size free are both great Apps to see what is taking up your space.

Some larger games have the option within the game itself; Bard's Tale for example. The option was offered when downloading the 1.8 GB datafile. The game still partly installs to the internal sdcard.

How'd you get Miscellaneous files so low? I have system memory in miscellaneous files. That can't be moved can it?
Not sure, but it may be because I am on Sprint and have android 4.1.1. If you notice, my 16 GB internal memory is reported as 10.95 GB. The other screenshots from VZW report the full 16 GB.
