Screen dead area - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Has anyone had trouble with the screen randomly having a dead area. Reboot fixed it last night. I'm thinking maybe it's the screen protector lifting. But there is no bubble.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

Have you been keeping your phone in your pocket. Reason i ask is i had the same issue. Didnt appear to be the screen but endded up needing a replacement as a result of it. In pocket will cause the screen to warp, after a while, as in my case the damage can be permanent.
Sent from my Evo 4g LTE...***** !!!

Did you have a case? I'm using an otterbox. I'm hoping it's the screen protector because I'm also having issues with the proximity sensor

My screen had a big black dead spot on it. If you pushed on it you could move it around. I don't know what caused it. I hated it!! So I ordered a replacement non OEM lcd screen w/o digitizer from amazon. I managed to peel off the digitizer with it still in working order. It was held on by a lot of adhesive. I don't recommend it. Slapped it back together good ad new.

Oh you know my spot isn't black. And actually hasn't been back. Did yours start to have issues at random before or all of a sudden.

It started with a little bit of yellowing at the bottom and then it got some black bands at the top. After that a black spot the size of a dime formed. I didn't feel like unrooting my phone back to stock, so I bought a new LCD from amazon. I highly recommend buying one w/ the digitizer. It has a verry strong glue between the two. I had to be very careful seperating them and removing all the adhesive cement.
Anyway brand new screen for $57. Replacement is non OEM, but just as good.

I have no discoloration at all. I've switched the screen protector and its still here. I will likely unroot and head into the store.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

Went into the store and the rep told me it was cosmetic and that they would not replace the screen. He also said that it would be a good idea to put my phone back to stock if I wanted to bring it in for service because the technicians would likely just run the ruu and say problem solved.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

no discolouration, no blackspot, appeared to be fine visualy, just a area that was dead.

How is that cosmetic?
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

They said because you can still use the area that is dead but you have to keep touching the area. Eventually it does work.
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

Its not cosmetic, it is mechanical. You have to be pretty stern with the sprint reps. They told me exactly the same thing. I just told them go ahead and ruu (s-off anyway, didnt matter) after they ran it and found for themselves it was mechanical they went ahrad and replaced the screen. My expierience with sprint reps has been 50/50, but usually they know out of the gate your phone is rooted. If your honest with them and they know its rooted, when yhey find out its a mechanival issue that they dont have to send back to the factory, theyll just rmake the repair and uour good to go. **** it man just tell them youve been keeping it in your pocket and it blisterd the screen and you need it replaced. Letem do their thing and be done with it.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

Did you have your phone in a case. I'm confused about the blistering screen. Is it something that all of the phones are vulnerable to because of the shape?
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

Also how much did you have to pay for the replacement
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

replacement is normally $35 without full insurance,

Ok since you need to get all scientific and **** about it. Yes my phone was in a case. But keeping it in my pocket caused excessive pressure on the screen and caused it to warp Just enough to keep it from functioning properly in one spot. The spot where the warp(blister ) occured. It's not really rocket science, just have your screen replaced and your troubles will be over. It's free with insurance about 30/35 bucks without
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

I have insurance so it should be covered. But the issue is gone at random.

That's cool, glad your issue is resolved. Just a note in the future when someone offers their help and advice one should consider useing the thanks button. Its there just for that purpose.

I've had random dead spots from the get go, not visual, just ui, and my capacitive buttons are wonky too - back button is under sensitive, recent apps (what a waste of function!) is over sensitive, like I don't have to actually make contact, really sucks. Got 10 days left for exchange (Best Buy) and I'm thinking of going w/ the gs3. Also having radio issues and a few other bugs. I just HATE touchwiz and I like sense.

So now my screen just cracked. Didn't drop, didn't sit on it, must of happened wiping it off with my shirt, or it spontaneously cracked. What a pos!
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app

Its pretty well known that a good amount of evo's have deffective displays. But if your phone is modded out and you can't make it look stock to the tech at the store, you mine as well just fix it yourself. Its the price we pay to have a better device. I found a replacement on amazon for 50$. Its a no name but its as good if not better than OEM. Also its not recommended but if you have a dead spot you can press on the screen to move it to a less important spot. Just be careful good chance of making it worse.

Camera lens cracked!

So I woke up today to find that my camera lens had cracked yesterday while pocket carrying my phone...thanks HTC for crappy quality. Can not find a lens replacement for thunderbolt I can find some for EVO 4G anybody know if these are the same size or close enough. Had to use old vogue lens grinded down to cover camera it works but it sucks .

I'd suggest just getting your Tbolt replaced from Verizon as this was not your fault.
I tried they told me I would have to file s claim.

I've dropped mine a couple times, tossed it onto my desk, all sorts of fun caseless things...and yours just breaks while sitting in a cloth pocket?
Are you sure you're telling the whole story...?
Lol I had it in my pocket most of the day I'm not shure how it cracked. But I'm not worried about how, I want to fix it, any suggestions to how or where to get a lens .

ive never seen just a replacement lens. if verizon refuses to replace it, then try contacting HTC and see if they have a way of providing that part.
a cracked lens isnt a defect so any damage to it will be deemed 'your fault.' so verizon probably wont give you a new one :\ and if you dont have insurance then thats bad news. sorry dude
another option could be to take it to one of those ripoff-artist kiosks at the mall that replace cracked phone screens. their suppliers might have access to your part.
Thanks gohamstergo I have a call into a friend who works at a Verizon service center ( 300 miles away) to see if he can get me one from a damaged phone and also an xda member is checking his parts bin to see if something he has will work. Your pic proves don't judge a book by its cover.

That will get you a $350 charge on your bill. New policy. And personally, I totally agree with it. If you send in a physically damaged phone the techs at the warehouse will take pictures as proof and send you a receipt for your new 'equipment charge'

Used one of the youtube vids for dis-assembly. Re-assembly is basically just the same steps in reverse. The most difficult part was lining up the placement of the digitizer on the LCD. If you don't get this right, the screen will not fit properly. I had to somewhat set the pieces together all in place loosely to get the alignment right (lcd sitting in the slot with the digitizer somewhat in place in the front bezel), and then take them apart and secure them together better to ensure a proper fit if that makes sense. My first try - lining thing up by eye - was not quite right. I used some 3M 2mm adhesive I ordered along with the tools. Taking the digitizer off is a bear, it takes quite a bit of patience and a bit of force. Reseating the cables is also a pain, use the plastic pry tool to help reseat, and have LOTs of patience during the whole process. Make sure to give yourself a solid hour or more. I just broke my second screen today with a beer bottle of all things, so I'll have to redo this whole process here shortly. Also make sure the front of the LCD and back of the digitizer are very clean, and the adhesive is lined up properly and not blocking sensors. I didn't do this well, and have a slight bit of adhesive sticking out the bottom side about 1mm into the visible area of the LCD, and the back of the digitizer is noticeably "gunky" in the front camera region, which I think is also causing some issues I'm having with the front proximity sensor. Hopefully I'll do a better job this next time. Good luck!
Oh my Chad.... Lol
Definitely out of my skill.
...any recommendations of what type of phone repair shop I should look into? I went to an iPhone based, but "smartphone" capable repair shop and he definitely didn't know what to do. He said it would cost 70$ and that it would be risky...... Not something I'm about to shell out 70$ for especially when I already have the replacement screen

I've seen a couple places online that you can send your phone to and they'll replace the screen and ship it back to you within a few days. Never tried a site like that tho and could be kinda sketchy but that's an option. Also here in Albuquerque there are tons of Craigslist ads for screen replacement here in town so you could check your city's page and see what you find.

I did this very thing last week successfully with no problems. Follow the repair video by repair universe on YouTube to the letter and you will do just fine. The key is to take your time and make sure the phone is heated enough with the hair dryer or heat gun to ensure that the adhesive comes apart smoothly. Take extra special precaution not to crack the LCD screen when removing the glass (digitizer) from it
If you're not willing to take the chance, you could always send it to me (for free) but I can't guarantee a flawless victory

I see what you did there...
If you decide to repair your screen yourself, there are also four transparent pieces of plastic that you need to put on the new screen.
They are for the capacitive buttons, so they redirect the light from the lights on the motherboard to the buttons.
Unless you don't want lights, of course. (I forgot to put them on mine lol, but I don't mind having no lights)
Also, when you put it back together, make sure to seal it very well on the outside so water doesn't get in and screw up the digitizer. You may have to use glue or something else as a sealant.
Every time it rains, my digitizer gets messed up from water getting in. (crossing my fingers for no permanent damage)

Is the gap really an issue?

Just wondering, how many of you have a gap? Also where is it located and do you care? I have a small but long gap on the top by the power button. I also have a hang around the bottom speaker. I'm just worried that over time dust will collect under the screen.

I don't think you need to worry about dust. I had dust with my sensation but the screen was different. These new LCD panels have zero gap between the LCD and the glass. I personally wouldnt have noticed any gaps if you guys had better things to do than to point out these little oddities with your phones. My device is perfect in my eyes so I think that's all that matters. Wow this phone feels nice. Not the easiest to grip without a case but it's very easy on the eyes.

I just got my phone 8 days ago and last night I dropped it without a case on and scratched up the front corners. It's it possible to get it exchanged at AT&T? If so how?

how bad is it, you can always claim something else is wrong with it. Where did you buy it from?
It's very small. I was able to kind of hide the clear aluminum showing with a black marker. I also just noticed I have 3 dead pixels so maybe that would be enough if they don't really notice the scrapes. I got it from an official AT&T store.

Personally I dropped mine and it got scuffed a little too, so much that it bothered me. I was within 14 when it fell so I took it back and told them that it was to fragile along the edges, got way to hot (130°) which I screenshot and the headphone jack doesn't work well with FM radio and he said no problem and replaced it and that was that. It was fraud on my end, and I paid good money for a phone that I wanted to keep in mint condition. Haven't dropped the second one yet but I have gaps, which isn't too bad. My advise, go for it and it isnt fraud of there is actually a problem with it anyway.

I ended up trading it in and getting a silver one. I was completely straight with the rep and showed him the scratches which he thought was no big deal and were barely even noticeable. I had to point out the scratch locations since he couldn't even see them at first. I showed him the dead pixels and also the power button which had this awful click sound which drove me crazy. I just had to pay a restocking fee and was good to go.

Need a new screen (Damn cat)

So my DNA was sitting on the bedside table last night and my girls cat pulled the charger cable and knocked it off of the table. When it fell it hit the leg of the table on the top left-hand corner and shattered the screen. I am having digitezer issues now and it is very annoying. Does anyone know where I can get the screen replaced? If that's even possible.

It doesn't appear too bad to do. I'd suggest getting a "frame" and the adhesive as well. Separating them seems to be the hardest step.
Also get a tool kit.
