I've accepted the fact that my EVO LTE is for the most part a worthless POS. Here's something I'm stomped on, though. My phone is currently running on the Viper 4G ROM and I'm using the Dolphin browser. I don't have a ton of apps installed on my phone and I have plenty of memory. Whenever I browse Facebook on my phone, I always use the desktop version like I always have throughout the years on my other phones that are supposed to be inferior, as far as memory and CPU power goes when compared to the EVO LTE. I've NEVER had memory problems on either of my previous EVOs.
After maybe 1.5 to 2 minutes of scrolling down my Facebook news feed, my phone starts to get extremely sluggish and it'll take a few seconds for simple script/words to come into focus. If I continue to scroll, the phone will completely lockup and become totally unresponsive to the point that I'm forced to do a reset. This problem occurs with the Dolphin browser and cache installed on the phone or when it's all installed on my micro SD card.
I have a 32GB SD card in my phone with tons of available memory... this is the location where my apps are SUPPOSEDLY installed. WHY THE HELL AM I HAVING THESE PROBLEMS WHEN THE APP AND CACHE ARE BOTH INSTALLED ON THE CARD?!?! Are the apps not truly being moved to the SD card like the phone says they are? Can anyone offer an explanation? I'm sick of having to reset my phone 6 times a day. I don't get it...

I've used Dolphin Browser on Viper 4G a lot and never had my phone lock up. Does it lock up on pages outside of Facebook?

The phone has 8GB of internal memory - why bother moving it to SD card?
And why not use the FB app instead of accessing it through Dolphin?
Sad to hear that you don't like this phone and think it's a POS because I LOVE mine - have none of the issues you describe and I have a ton of apps, music, etc. on my phone. Good luck with resolving these issues.
I moved most of my apps to the SD card the other day with hopes that it would alleviate my problems.
I'm confused...Are you talking about running out of RAM or storage space? The problem you're describing sounds like RAM, which has nothing to do with your sd card...they are both types of "memory" but android doesn't use the sd card for extra RAM, it's only for storing data like a hard drive. There is 1gb reserved on the internal memory for running programs to use. Check the available RAM in Task Manager when your start having this problem and see if it's low. If so, you might try killing some other apps to free up some memory. Do you have this issue with the stock browser?

If you seriously think that the EVO LTE is a POS you should probably move on and get something that suits you better since just fixing the browser, FB issues probably isn't the only issues you have etc..
For one, like the other poster indicated, you have more than enough room for applications and storage on your internal memory so my advice is to utilize that since it will be at least 15-20 times faster for read/writes. If you still want to utilize the SD for apps for some reason, make sure you are using a good name brand, fast class 10 SD card otherwise your read/write speeds will suffer tremendously.
Also if using the SD for apps, remember that some apps won't work properly when the PC is connected to the SD and some won't work well during boot sequences until the cell is fully booted. But it sounds like you have a ton more issues, maybe you have a bad unit because for most, other than the hit or miss Sprint connectivity, LTE connections etc the EVO LTE is one of the best cells out right now so your issues can probably be resolved by replacing.
Good luck
I'm running the same rom, and have never run into what you're describing with fb or dolphin. If your running them off your card, maybe the card is the issue.
Apparently no one read my previous post. Thanks for the help, guys. I guess I'll just have to deal with it. BTW... my SD card is a SanDisk Class 10.

Yeah, but this phone still shouldn't lockup as many times as it does on a daily basis from very light usage after it has been reset. On my EVO 3D, I can scroll continuously through 2 days of Facebook history and not have the issues I'm having with this LTE.
Just checking lol. I jumped to cmx and haven't looked back. I don't take many pics so losing image sense doesn't bother me much. You could always try aosp

Uhhh, actually no. Works fine on my phone on stock browser going waaay back... something must be wrong either with your phone, dolphin, your rom. Have you tried a different rom? When you reinstall, are you restoring dolphin? if so, have you tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it?

Are there any relation in the two?
I just got my wife a new Hero(stock) and I replaced her 2Gb with an class 2 8gig and got 13 MB/s on her phone and I only had 7 MB/s on my phone. I used HDD Tach for benchmarks.
I was going to test the cards in an adapter but it wants to format the card when it's not in the phone.
Any opinions, suggestions, or solutions?
I can run some tests and take some screen shots if anyone is interested.

In answer to your question it is unlikely the ROM will make a difference for the speed of the SD. Though strange you're asked to format the card in an sd-reader (not normal). Why not just backup the data and format it then run the test and put the data back? Unless you're running A2SD which would make that more difficult.

I am running app2sd so with the adapter, windows sees the card as unformated.
I'll have to set some time aside to test the cards in the adapter and then separately in the phones.
I put her card in my phone with and got 7Mb, I put it in her phone an get double that. She get 14MB/s with a class 2 while I get 7 with the same card.

So what you're saying is that there is almost no change between ROM's (which I predicted...) except when testing through the recovery - which could have been an anomaly?
Please explain your test settings with detailed inforamtion about what SD card you used in which tests. It is generally accepted that an average is taken across 3 tests and any figures which don't come close to the others are classed as anomalies (and removed).
If you look closely, there acutally is a significant difference in speed. up to 6 Mb in recovery and up to 7 in the ROM.
The tests were repeated and results were similar. If you really want screenshots for every one, I can do that, but this subject isn't even take seriously yet.
The program is free, download it and see what you get.
I'm using a class 6 card off ebay. It's obviously capable of 16MB/s.
First:
If you put the card in an adapter in Windows, it's going to ask you to format is because it sees an unknown (or two) partitions. You can click 'no', and the FAT partition will still be available like any other regular USB stick / SD card.
2nd: That (certain) recovery's are slower then the normal roms is quite normal.
They have are not updates as much as roms, and more importantly: They are made for recovery and emergency work, so any kind of caching and optimizing is turned off to make sure every bit get's written directly to the device instead of cached in RAM.
3rd: The 'class' indicator on SD cards can fool you so easily. I've seen class 4 cards with a sustained 14mb/sec in Windows and class 6 cards which barely maintain 8mb/sec.
So, if you ask about different ROM's and their impact on SD-card speed, there's only one method: test it yourself. Ignore recovery's, and only go for ROMs. Make sure you test on _the same device_, and _the same SD card_, and then try different ROMs.
Any difference between 0 and 1.5 mb/sec is normal. Your phone is always doing things in the background like maintaining radio, syncing, running background apps. Those can alter your performance..
Once you see speed _consistent_ speed differences of more than 2 mb/sec, please let us now. Otherwise, it's nothing.

First of all, thanks for the responses.

I did not know this, and the actual card performance was my first concern, but after running the test a few times in a few ROMS, I'm confident of the speed.

The Recovery has the best performance. I'm not sure what the rest of the response means besides the recovery has absolute SD card performance which only proves my point.

Hello I have been on CM7 7.1 with DC 8.9.1 since June 27th and today when i rebooted my phone it started to feel very hot so opened set cpu (I don't use it with drownings kernals) to see what the cpu was running at and it was pinned at 806 I know some reported this happening with drownings kernal some times but usually switching between gov.'s or lower and rasing the cpu setting corrects it. Well it didn't this time tried through cm settings also still no luck. I reflashed my rom without using dc kernal and still the same pinned at 806 unless I manually scale back and it will stick at what ever setting i put it at. Anyone have any ideas to correct this. I searched XDA and found no relevent posts about this.
what's your governor?

Never heard of that one before I remember smartass2 in the DC kernel was giving some problems. Did you try flashing the msm7227 kernel? If that doesn't work, I would try a full wipe/factory reset.
What were any of the changes (system changes, apps installed, etc) that you made to the phone prior to the problems starting?
Try using No Frills cpu
And try using an app called CPU spy.

I get this SAME problem on my HTC Evo (but unlike you nobody cared to answer). I tried fixing permissions and that didnt work. I tried full wiping and going back to nightlies I previously used (where it was working for sure) and that didn't work. I tried 4 different kernels from 4 different kernel devs (sbc and non sbc)..that didn't work lol. My brother recently switched to CM 7.1 and the same is happening to him. I'll be keeping a eye on this thread
Are you flashing anything after you flash the ROM besides the kernel
Sent from my HTC Liberty S using XDA App
Nothing besides the kernal. Starting to think it was an app because I had four that were not from the market that I got from here on xda one was pins music mod and the other three were beta tests maybe one was not playing nice with my phone. After leaving my phone on the charger overnight with it set to never sleep when on charge because I use at my clock at night it appears to have set at 245 all night which is the minimum I have the CPU set to. So its definitely scaling back and going into deep sleep when not in use but still seems to spend a lot of time at 806 when on. Here's the latest screen shot of CPU Spy

With my understanding of the governors my aria with dc 891 is scaling correctly as it should. Although my phone should use more of the intermediate frequencies more than just stair stepping straight to max for whatever reason. In your case it seems that there is some stuck process making your phone peg at 806. To bad there isn't a app that tracks uptime of each and every app and process at work on your phone and how much cpu muscle it calls for.

You should be able to tell from Spare Parts. Both "battery history" and "usage statistics" should make it obvious is an app is maxing out your CPU.

IMO, the governor is functioning as it should. If it stair stepped it's way up every time a load was placed on the CPU, the lag would be quite noticeable.
What you're seeing is your phone sitting basically idle, with the exception of some short term background tasks running periodically. For example, if at the same time, you were to use BT to stream some music to a headset for a couple of hours, basically keeping a fairly constant load on the CPU, you would see a lot more cpu time spent hovering between 400 - 600.
I understand what your saying. When I originally posted this it was stuck at 806 and not scaling back I was watching a CPU widget on my home screen and it wasn't moving from 806 and the phone was mad hot and I was watching the battery drain as well. After removing the apps and running fix permissions it is now running as you stated it jumps up to take on what ever I am doing then scales back and waits. I don't. Know for sure what caused the original problem.
Just on a side note I also was using 2 year old class 2 SD card running s2e with 130 apps and cache both on sd ext. maybe my card was going bad and under class for the job so I replaced the card with a new class 4 16gb last nite may have had nothing to do with it but thought I would mention it. Thanks to everyone for contributing with ideas and suggestions.

Okay just happened again this time with quick system info app I think I found the culprit android.process.media it was showing 85% CPU usage. After doing some googling it seems to be the general consensus that it is a corrupt file on my SD card. When I replaced the SD card I formatted and created my ext. partition and then copied everything over from old card so I am sure I probably moved the corrupt from the old to the new. Problem is I have over 7gb of stuff on the card and don't know where to begin to find and remove the corrupt file or files. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Since you think it is a media file, copy all media files to a pc;then manually select each to play on the pc. Delete those which will not play correctly. VERY time consuming, but lets you save all the rest of the files.
Just an update when I connected my phone to my pc I got a pop up that said something along the lines of media device may have corrupt files and asked if i wanted to scan to fix so selected ok after the scan was complete I have never had the problem again. Usually "Do You Want To Scan And Fix Removable Disk" is seen when a device is connected to a windows computer after being hot disconnected the previous time. If you have write caching enabled (helps performance) it's best to use "Safely Remove Hardware" from the system tray. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10392-write-caching-enable-disable.html

Even if your phone had 10GB RAM it would quickly fill up with data since NO operating system in existance wastes RAM.
Additionally it's rather complicated with Linux; a program can actually be given (committed) memory withhout using it. If another program also needs RAM there is a chance of it being given exactly the same virtual memory location.
Sounds confusing but is rather awesome in regards to performance and capabilities.

Another thing that you may want to consider... s3 was hyped beyond reason, so much indeed that many had expectations too high for any phone to actually fulfill. That in combination with the hefty pricetag generates (in my opinion unfounded) regrets!

I have two mobile phones, 1 for work and 1 for private. So yes, I'd like 2
You must have the worst handset ever i do not have any of these issuez on ours fortunately i didnt have to buy it but i would if i had to

I definitely would but if I knew about the lack of Mass Storage mode and moving Apps to external and incompatible MHL cables I probably would have waited until about now when they getting fixed, and save a bit of money while I'm on.
I would consider gnex.. I want the phone but I don't want to sell my s3 because I love that very much also :/

Mass storage works just fine on the external SD card. Some time back I've posted several lines of shell-commands to enable and use mass storage mode.
It requires root tough. If you're unfamilier with the Shell (Terminal) just wait a few days unteil Kopfgeldjaeger has updated his app with my "latest" findings so as to prevent potential data loss.
Internal Storage is somewhat trickier but I'm working on a possible solution.
My Java is somewhat rusty tough and I'm currently in the midst of exams so it may take some time to finish. Theory and current tests look very promising in regards to usage and capabilities tough, I guess it will work on any phone with 512+MB RAM. Some of the dirty details are in the Development section.
moving Apps to external

This also works with some handywork on the shell, but you should only move the app's data on the internal storage and not the app itself for performance reasons.

Buying some cables in the hope of them fitting doesn't work. Ever =)

Maybe the handset also has the worst owner in terms of complains =)
Hell yes. I love all the added Samsung functions. Also I am loving the hardware. I have gone from HD2 to SG2 to SG3 this phone is by far the nicest in all aspects. I am getting some WiFi disconnection I am sure it's just cos it's new and still has a few bugs to iron out. One major one being s voice.

i didnt have your problem.but 4.4 fw use more than 4.3 i think about 100mb and this is not the claim by google about KK.
I have around 1.1GB free on boot, and an average of 8-900MB free after that. How many apps do you have installed? I wouldn't exclude the possibility that a badly coded app is leaking RAM like a faucet.
i use this app to tell me how much RAM apps are using:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.als.usagetimelines
Usage Timelines Free
it's got an easy to read, non cluttered UI
Also don't forget Android's own RAM and geek stats monitor in the dev settings.

I have 480mb left and thats with 3 day uptime. I do notice that its a little sluggish compared with 4.2.2. But thats not memory thats just the system and processes that kitkat uses. More features mean more processes.
Go into settings/developer options
and then change the processes to 4 max.
Default it 8, so that will stop the lag you are probably experiencing.
Above 800 MB free after 5 days without reboot. I play heavy games for about 2 hours everyday (Zelda64 via N64oid, Asphalt 8, Dungeon Hunter 4). But that's on my 4.3
Waiting for the fix before I update to KK. Its already 9/04 and Sony told the fix will start rolling from 7/04
sorry.cannot delete this post..sorry for this post..d*mn..where's the delete..will try later

You've a cool job though, have a good trip!

Hi,
I Have a European Samsung Galaxy s3 I9300
I Have something issues about it:
First it is over heating from the bottom back of the phone. The place I mentioned is circled here:

Second its battery is really draining fast. Here are screenshots. I fully charged it. Then I slept. When I woke up approximately 10 hrs later. Battery was 10%
Lastly, when I press power button screen responses a bit late.
Now, according to the info I gave you folks, do you have an idea what my problem is? Is it about battery or chipset or something else?
Btw, device is running Android 4.3, rooted, many bloatware were freezed with rom Toolbox. I use nova launcher. Battery recently calibrated.
Thanks in advance
Really can't say anything about this until you experience the same on a freshly flashed stock rom with factory reset without any user apps installed.
Behind the circle sits the Exynos CPU which will get warm if it's constantly on high load.
A defective MicroSD card can also get really hot and cause battery drain.
Btw you really don't need apps like JuiceDefender on Jellybean, it uses more battery then it'll save imho.
In the battery menu, go into Google Play Services and find out how long its awake for, I find that it will keep the phone awake for two hours. This will prevent the CPU from sleeping causing battery drain and heat

I can't reset my phone because it really holds important info. And I do not trust Backup/Restore apps.
I installed Juice Defender only to try. But as you mentioned it didn't help at all. So uninstalled it.
I removed SD card and Phone became more Stable. Should I use Phone without SD card or will formatting it be the sollution?
But unfortunately Late Response of Power button While Waking up the device still conitnues

Have a read of the threads by people desperate to recover lost data, the s3 isn't a bank vault and you can't rely on it.
Get titanium backup and store copies of the backup on your pc and cloud, then factory reset.

But you do trust your buggy S3 to save your 'important info'?
Important info should be backed up.
Titanium Backup and CWM backup can easily be trusted.
With problem solving you want to exclude possible causes. Your software could be screwed and thus giving you this problem.
That's why you'll need to go back to a fresh factory reset to exclude that it's the software causing this.
This is basic knowledge.
Good luck.

You don't need to purchase it to backup or restore.
If you want to restore from CWM backups and automate the restore of your apps then you'll need the pro version else the free version will suffice.

I restored the pure stock Android 4.3 but nope.
Removing SD card helped a little; but late response of power/home button when screen is off still, rarely, occurs.

try *#0228# on your phone dialler.
then press the button. it should calibrate your battery.
Lag on waking is a feature of 4.3, means the phone is deep sleep.

I can understand waking up from deep sleep but I think my phone has a really Heavy sleep
