Are there any relation in the two?
I just got my wife a new Hero(stock) and I replaced her 2Gb with an class 2 8gig and got 13 MB/s on her phone and I only had 7 MB/s on my phone. I used HDD Tach for benchmarks.
I was going to test the cards in an adapter but it wants to format the card when it's not in the phone.
Any opinions, suggestions, or solutions?
I can run some tests and take some screen shots if anyone is interested.

Dev is where the cool people are.................
Anyway, it probably explain all the incorrect posts in there. But i try to float between the two.
In answer to your question it is unlikely the ROM will make a difference for the speed of the SD. Though strange you're asked to format the card in an sd-reader (not normal). Why not just backup the data and format it then run the test and put the data back? Unless you're running A2SD which would make that more difficult.

I am running app2sd so with the adapter, windows sees the card as unformated.
I'll have to set some time aside to test the cards in the adapter and then separately in the phones.
I put her card in my phone with and got 7Mb, I put it in her phone an get double that. She get 14MB/s with a class 2 while I get 7 with the same card.

So what you're saying is that there is almost no change between ROM's (which I predicted...) except when testing through the recovery - which could have been an anomaly?
Please explain your test settings with detailed inforamtion about what SD card you used in which tests. It is generally accepted that an average is taken across 3 tests and any figures which don't come close to the others are classed as anomalies (and removed).
If you look closely, there acutally is a significant difference in speed. up to 6 Mb in recovery and up to 7 in the ROM.
The tests were repeated and results were similar. If you really want screenshots for every one, I can do that, but this subject isn't even take seriously yet.
The program is free, download it and see what you get.
I'm using a class 6 card off ebay. It's obviously capable of 16MB/s.
First:
If you put the card in an adapter in Windows, it's going to ask you to format is because it sees an unknown (or two) partitions. You can click 'no', and the FAT partition will still be available like any other regular USB stick / SD card.
2nd: That (certain) recovery's are slower then the normal roms is quite normal.
They have are not updates as much as roms, and more importantly: They are made for recovery and emergency work, so any kind of caching and optimizing is turned off to make sure every bit get's written directly to the device instead of cached in RAM.
3rd: The 'class' indicator on SD cards can fool you so easily. I've seen class 4 cards with a sustained 14mb/sec in Windows and class 6 cards which barely maintain 8mb/sec.
So, if you ask about different ROM's and their impact on SD-card speed, there's only one method: test it yourself. Ignore recovery's, and only go for ROMs. Make sure you test on _the same device_, and _the same SD card_, and then try different ROMs.
Any difference between 0 and 1.5 mb/sec is normal. Your phone is always doing things in the background like maintaining radio, syncing, running background apps. Those can alter your performance..
Once you see speed _consistent_ speed differences of more than 2 mb/sec, please let us now. Otherwise, it's nothing.

First of all, thanks for the responses.

I did not know this, and the actual card performance was my first concern, but after running the test a few times in a few ROMS, I'm confident of the speed.

The Recovery has the best performance. I'm not sure what the rest of the response means besides the recovery has absolute SD card performance which only proves my point.

I did test it, and there is an obvious difference.. The question is, which components, that control the SD device, differ between the ROMS?

Hello I have been on CM7 7.1 with DC 8.9.1 since June 27th and today when i rebooted my phone it started to feel very hot so opened set cpu (I don't use it with drownings kernals) to see what the cpu was running at and it was pinned at 806 I know some reported this happening with drownings kernal some times but usually switching between gov.'s or lower and rasing the cpu setting corrects it. Well it didn't this time tried through cm settings also still no luck. I reflashed my rom without using dc kernal and still the same pinned at 806 unless I manually scale back and it will stick at what ever setting i put it at. Anyone have any ideas to correct this. I searched XDA and found no relevent posts about this.
what's your governor?
Sent from my Liberty
Never heard of that one before I remember smartass2 in the DC kernel was giving some problems. Did you try flashing the msm7227 kernel? If that doesn't work, I would try a full wipe/factory reset.
What were any of the changes (system changes, apps installed, etc) that you made to the phone prior to the problems starting?
Try using No Frills cpu
And try using an app called CPU spy.

Thanks for the suggestions going through recently installed apps now and going to uninstall them also going to run a fix permissions. Also going to try PCU Spy.

Okay deleted most recent apps ran fix permissions through rom manager and installed CPU Spy and The phone doesn't seem like its as hot as before but from the CPU spy it seems like the phone is either in deep sleep or at 806 most of time. Here's the screen shot of the results using smartass gov. After about 6 hours. Going to try another gov. And see what results I get

I get this SAME problem on my HTC Evo (but unlike you nobody cared to answer). I tried fixing permissions and that didnt work. I tried full wiping and going back to nightlies I previously used (where it was working for sure) and that didn't work. I tried 4 different kernels from 4 different kernel devs (sbc and non sbc)..that didn't work lol. My brother recently switched to CM 7.1 and the same is happening to him. I'll be keeping a eye on this thread
Are you flashing anything after you flash the ROM besides the kernel
Sent from my HTC Liberty S using XDA App
Nothing besides the kernal. Starting to think it was an app because I had four that were not from the market that I got from here on xda one was pins music mod and the other three were beta tests maybe one was not playing nice with my phone. After leaving my phone on the charger overnight with it set to never sleep when on charge because I use at my clock at night it appears to have set at 245 all night which is the minimum I have the CPU set to. So its definitely scaling back and going into deep sleep when not in use but still seems to spend a lot of time at 806 when on. Here's the latest screen shot of CPU Spy

With my understanding of the governors my aria with dc 891 is scaling correctly as it should. Although my phone should use more of the intermediate frequencies more than just stair stepping straight to max for whatever reason. In your case it seems that there is some stuck process making your phone peg at 806. To bad there isn't a app that tracks uptime of each and every app and process at work on your phone and how much cpu muscle it calls for.

You should be able to tell from Spare Parts. Both "battery history" and "usage statistics" should make it obvious is an app is maxing out your CPU.

IMO, the governor is functioning as it should. If it stair stepped it's way up every time a load was placed on the CPU, the lag would be quite noticeable.
What you're seeing is your phone sitting basically idle, with the exception of some short term background tasks running periodically. For example, if at the same time, you were to use BT to stream some music to a headset for a couple of hours, basically keeping a fairly constant load on the CPU, you would see a lot more cpu time spent hovering between 400 - 600.
I understand what your saying. When I originally posted this it was stuck at 806 and not scaling back I was watching a CPU widget on my home screen and it wasn't moving from 806 and the phone was mad hot and I was watching the battery drain as well. After removing the apps and running fix permissions it is now running as you stated it jumps up to take on what ever I am doing then scales back and waits. I don't. Know for sure what caused the original problem.
Just on a side note I also was using 2 year old class 2 SD card running s2e with 130 apps and cache both on sd ext. maybe my card was going bad and under class for the job so I replaced the card with a new class 4 16gb last nite may have had nothing to do with it but thought I would mention it. Thanks to everyone for contributing with ideas and suggestions.

Okay just happened again this time with quick system info app I think I found the culprit android.process.media it was showing 85% CPU usage. After doing some googling it seems to be the general consensus that it is a corrupt file on my SD card. When I replaced the SD card I formatted and created my ext. partition and then copied everything over from old card so I am sure I probably moved the corrupt from the old to the new. Problem is I have over 7gb of stuff on the card and don't know where to begin to find and remove the corrupt file or files. Any suggestions or thoughts?

Since you think it is a media file, copy all media files to a pc;then manually select each to play on the pc. Delete those which will not play correctly. VERY time consuming, but lets you save all the rest of the files.
Just an update when I connected my phone to my pc I got a pop up that said something along the lines of media device may have corrupt files and asked if i wanted to scan to fix so selected ok after the scan was complete I have never had the problem again. So I am pretty sure it was something on the sd card that was causing the problem. Thanks again to everyone who tried to help me out.

Usually "Do You Want To Scan And Fix Removable Disk" is seen when a device is connected to a windows computer after being hot disconnected the previous time. If you have write caching enabled (helps performance) it's best to use "Safely Remove Hardware" from the system tray. http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/10392-write-caching-enable-disable.html
Before root, my dwnld speeds averaged 18mb to 30mb. I'm lucky, and have LTE everywhere I go and those numbers were consistent. Since root, I can not get above 10mb. They're probably not really slower, just dont use the speedtest.net application. Use http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ instead.
Everyone keeps recommending the speakeasy site over the speedtest.net app. Not sure why it shows different numbers for some but they both show almost identical speeds for me (speakeasy is even a little slower at times). Maybe it depends on your location and coverage but no difference here. *shrug*

If you try it on CM7 or any aosp rom it makes a world of difference for me at least. Download speeds are 1-5mbps on speedtest for it and 15-20 on speakeasy or just by testing through more scientific means (like using wget on a known file size, timing it and dividing out the size/time).
You realize the difference between 10mbps and 30mbps on a cell phone is completely intangible. There are no websites that even deliver content at 30mbps in the first place, aside from the speakeasy servers for testing purposes, and even if they did, you wouldnt notice the difference because the entire page layout would have already been loaded in 1 second anyway.

You assume we're talking about web pages. I was generally referring to large binary files handled over http. I download plenty of those from my own servers.
However, a webserver can deliver content at any speed it can handle (limited by load balancing or the max speed of a server). If you have a webpage with 100 large images on it, it's sure going to load a lot faster on LTE @ 2-4 MB/s than it would on CMDA at 300KB/s.
There are plenty of crappy wordpress and other crappy CMS sites out there that arent exactly very efficient in loading stuff either because they make too many http requests or they dont know what compression is. Either way, it'll make a difference.
another thing to keep in mind also, is the more people that sign up & get 4G the slower the network will gradually get.
even 3G used to be faster at first....
If I am getting 3 mb/s speeds on speedtest and 19 mb/s speed on speakeasy which should i believe?

Yup, no difference here whatsoever. Speakeasy is actually slower than the speedtest app. Tested them back to back while sitting in the same location.
Always been this way from CM7 RC0.6 through 1.3 now on MR1, MR2, OTA MR2. That's why it always made me wonder when lots of people suggested using speakeasy.

I got about the same running Cyanogenmod 7 RC1.3 27.83 Mb/s down and 3.82 Mb/s up, using the most recent Radio Leak
Think the app's are a bit misleading anyway. I ran the speedtest app on my phone and get 30mb down, then I tether to my laptop and run the same test from their website and get 7mb down.
I hate to bring back an old thread but has anyone discovered a solution to this?
Since some users are reporting about reduced wifi reception after updating to GB roms, I decided to extract wifi related files from a Froyo rom and GB rom and see what differences are there.
There are a number of wifi related files live under /system/etc/wifi and I have extracted them from a Froyo Rom (zske2) and GB Rom (xxkpf) and put them in this zip file don't flash this!
If you unzip it, you will find 2 sets of wifi settings and firmware. What I notice is that the binary firmwares are definitely different and there are various changes in the settings as well.
The first thing that caught my eye is the pa0maxpwr parameter in nvram_mfg.txt . From the name, it seems to mean maximum power. You can see that the value was 78 in Froyo. In GB, the engineers were trying values 74, commented it out and then settled for 72.
I tried setting it back to 78, seems to get a bit better (around 10db increase) if I connect from another room.
For those who are interested in this, please report back whether certain changes in these setting files will give you better result. Not necessary the one I mentioned. However, please use some objective measure e.g. Wifi Analyzer on the Market.
To edit these files, you can copy them out using root file explorer, edit them and put it back. I think you need a reboot to activate the change.
Be nice to compare compass/orientation files to see why GB compass doesn't seem to work at all... Maybe the wifi signal is interfering, and they didn't turn it down low enough
Great you starting to make some progress. How is the signal compare to your laptop at same position with this little tweak? Looking forward to your further explore!

Hmm, tried editing on a U.S version YP-G1, makes no noticeable difference in connection strength (using wifi analyser). I'm about 35 ft away from the router.
I just tried this on my yp-g70 International version. It seems to have actually lowered my reception a few db. I set it back to 72 and rebooted and it brought it up a couple db. I'm connecting to wifi about a block away so that may have something to do with the few db change. I don't think it really made a difference though.
My experience is similar to previous 2 posts. Playing with the maxpwr setting doesn't seem to improve much.
In fact, I even apply the entire set of Froyo firmware and settings to a GB rom. It doesn't seem to get any better.
I think to actually track down wifi reception problem. We need more information from those who experience the problem. e.g. ROM version and objective testing of the different ROM version at the same spot. May be even router brand & version as well.

I am using XEKP2 stock rom (Russian one) and Dlink G604T router with latest NZ fw. Some people on forum using XXKPH also suffered a bit. This seems to be a general problem for GB (independent of version). If some people got connection/disconnection from router, then it could be router dependent. Anybody can easily experience it simply revert to Froyo stock. I would say you may get 10~20db signal increase (though wifi reception in GB may still be in acceptable range). Hope to get more people report their wifi reception on comparison of GB and Froyo under same condition.

Some positive result from anil_kilic
This is some test results sent to me by anil_kilic. It is interesting that at pa0maxpwr=72, his connection is very bad and a boost in pa0maxpwr to 78 gives him a 8-10db gain in signal strength.
It is only one data point but it might mean that this kind of tweak will benefit very bad connection but not on moderate or good connections. Hopefully, we will see some more test cases.

I`ve did exactly what you said on a SGS+ (GT-i9001) and raise that value from 72 to 78 and then extreme a bit till 90 I will post screenshots in a few mins ... no changes tho ...
Edit: well it seems I saved my screenshots as csv instead of pictures but anyway I gained not so much dB signal but more stability and ability to use wifi even on poor signal and that really help.
KPL new FW
very interesting.
SG have issued a KPL firmware with WIFI "improvments" they say.
ThisFW is for korean YP-GB70 ONLY but the wifi setting can be investigated as well.
Just my say, it is working well on my device and for me better than KPF was, so can be subjective.

I've accepted the fact that my EVO LTE is for the most part a worthless POS. Here's something I'm stomped on, though. My phone is currently running on the Viper 4G ROM and I'm using the Dolphin browser. I don't have a ton of apps installed on my phone and I have plenty of memory. Whenever I browse Facebook on my phone, I always use the desktop version like I always have throughout the years on my other phones that are supposed to be inferior, as far as memory and CPU power goes when compared to the EVO LTE. I've NEVER had memory problems on either of my previous EVOs.
After maybe 1.5 to 2 minutes of scrolling down my Facebook news feed, my phone starts to get extremely sluggish and it'll take a few seconds for simple script/words to come into focus. If I continue to scroll, the phone will completely lockup and become totally unresponsive to the point that I'm forced to do a reset. This problem occurs with the Dolphin browser and cache installed on the phone or when it's all installed on my micro SD card.
I have a 32GB SD card in my phone with tons of available memory... this is the location where my apps are SUPPOSEDLY installed. WHY THE HELL AM I HAVING THESE PROBLEMS WHEN THE APP AND CACHE ARE BOTH INSTALLED ON THE CARD?!?! Are the apps not truly being moved to the SD card like the phone says they are? Can anyone offer an explanation? I'm sick of having to reset my phone 6 times a day. I don't get it...

I've used Dolphin Browser on Viper 4G a lot and never had my phone lock up. Does it lock up on pages outside of Facebook?

The phone has 8GB of internal memory - why bother moving it to SD card?
And why not use the FB app instead of accessing it through Dolphin?
Sad to hear that you don't like this phone and think it's a POS because I LOVE mine - have none of the issues you describe and I have a ton of apps, music, etc. on my phone. Good luck with resolving these issues.
I moved most of my apps to the SD card the other day with hopes that it would alleviate my problems.
I'm confused...Are you talking about running out of RAM or storage space? The problem you're describing sounds like RAM, which has nothing to do with your sd card...they are both types of "memory" but android doesn't use the sd card for extra RAM, it's only for storing data like a hard drive. There is 1gb reserved on the internal memory for running programs to use. Check the available RAM in Task Manager when your start having this problem and see if it's low. If so, you might try killing some other apps to free up some memory. Do you have this issue with the stock browser?

If you seriously think that the EVO LTE is a POS you should probably move on and get something that suits you better since just fixing the browser, FB issues probably isn't the only issues you have etc..
For one, like the other poster indicated, you have more than enough room for applications and storage on your internal memory so my advice is to utilize that since it will be at least 15-20 times faster for read/writes. If you still want to utilize the SD for apps for some reason, make sure you are using a good name brand, fast class 10 SD card otherwise your read/write speeds will suffer tremendously.
Also if using the SD for apps, remember that some apps won't work properly when the PC is connected to the SD and some won't work well during boot sequences until the cell is fully booted. But it sounds like you have a ton more issues, maybe you have a bad unit because for most, other than the hit or miss Sprint connectivity, LTE connections etc the EVO LTE is one of the best cells out right now so your issues can probably be resolved by replacing.
Good luck
I'm running the same rom, and have never run into what you're describing with fb or dolphin. If your running them off your card, maybe the card is the issue.
Apparently no one read my previous post. Thanks for the help, guys. I guess I'll just have to deal with it. BTW... my SD card is a SanDisk Class 10.
You do realize sense uses internal memory to install apps right?

Yeah, but this phone still shouldn't lockup as many times as it does on a daily basis from very light usage after it has been reset. On my EVO 3D, I can scroll continuously through 2 days of Facebook history and not have the issues I'm having with this LTE.
Just checking lol. I jumped to cmx and haven't looked back. I don't take many pics so losing image sense doesn't bother me much. You could always try aosp

i agree, its got to be the symbolic linking you got going on there thats slowing it down. if you want everything on your SD card so bad change the mount points instead.

It's not that I want the apps on the SD card... I put them there to see if it would fix the problem.
I think you have a bad phone.

Maybe a hard reset will work. Start from scratch and see if it happens again? Also do you have fastboot unchecked?
The main problem is....
Only one GB of Ram

I've flashed the ROM twice hoping that it would fix some problems.

Uhhh, actually no. Works fine on my phone on stock browser going waaay back... something must be wrong either with your phone, dolphin, your rom. Have you tried a different rom? When you reinstall, are you restoring dolphin? if so, have you tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it?
I was handed an old Touchpad to see if I could get it working for my kids' learning apps. We're in quarantine from the Corona virus here in upstate NY and it looks like I won't have an income for a while, so I'd like to see if I could make this work.
The previous owner doesn't recall what he did, but I'm greeted with this menu upon boot:

The Lineage option boots into a Nougat 7.1 that is SUPER LAGGY. Like, I went open a blank browser (no tabs open), and it sometimes can take 30 seconds for the keyboard to appear. And pressing the circle home button can take 5-10 seconds to respond as well. Other times apps just won't load unless I reboot first. It makes using any kind of interactive learning game downright impossible. The evervolv option straight up doesn't work. I'm not even sure why it is there and the previous owner doesn't remember why it is there or how it got there either.
I'm thinking I should just start with a different rom. But I'm not clear on how this dual-boot setup works or if I'll mess something up just flashing in twrp. Like, if I flash a rom in twrp, which partition will it be flashing to? And for that matter, how do I remove one that doesn't work? I'm new to touchpad in general. Someone suggested just going back to stock WebOS and starting over from there but that seems like more unnecessary work if I already have twrp installed and running, right? Suggestions?
So do you know your way around how to reset and install a new Rom using J.C. Sullin's TouchPad Toolbox?
I would suggest reading up on using TPTB. Download the required files and install his Rom, CM11. It was the best, most stable and functional Rom made for the TouchPad. Even the camera works. I know you want to set it up for your kids and I think you will have the best luck with Sullin's CM11. I've seen you trying to use the method by HPTouchPad and are having problems with it. If you ask him about my suggestions, you will find out he had a white hot hate for me because I have questioned and challenged him ever since he started that and several other threads. He claims everything he creates works perfectly when in fact it doesn't. His method is interesting, but if you question anything he says, he goes out of his way to attack and cast dispersion's on you.
If you get your TP setup and can download the apps you want for your kid to use and working OK, I'll tell you about what I did on two TP's I own that I feel gets me the best performance and stability. You may even be happy enough with CM11 that you won't even want to mess with my idea. Just remember, if HPTouchPad finds out you are talking to me, he will probably go ballistic.
If you have the time, read thru that thread and you will see what I am talking about. If you notice towards the end that he is starting to waver on what he suggests you should install. Earlier in the thread, he claims that you can load and run anything including the Super version of Gapps which is huge. And any of the various Roms he has modified and tweaked. It's nothing wrong with his work, it's all the fault of Gapps, ads and weather apps. Oh, and you absolutely must keep your TP charging at all times, that's because his stuff just drains the battery quickly. Note, TouchPads do not like to have the battery drained down to low levels or to the point where the tablet automatically shuts down. It's a proven fact that could cause problems on the TP, so you want to keep an eye on the battery level and I recommend not letting it go below 20%.
With Sullin's CM11, I can leave my tables off charge and when asleep, will last for days. Good Luck and stay away from that nasty virus.

Depending what you intend to do with the touchpad each person has their own opinion about what works for them. I found the following combination works best for my 16gb tablet. I use it for youtube, hulu, and surfing the web. I also have this on my 32gb one but it's got some games for the kids. The battery drain thing is a problem but not a major issue for me. Only thing that annoys me is if the battery is too drained to get it to boot up. I have to hold the power and the home key (I think) to get it to boot up otherwise plugging it in does do a thing.

@dizzymon Your are an example of how a discarded old device found on an ewaste bin was brought back to be useful again, thanks to all the hard work of many developers that dedicated their time to port Android to the HP Touchpad:
From your post dated December 6 of 2019:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=81116701&postcount=183
""My 32GB runs pretty good but my 16GB one that I found in the ewaste bin at work runs like garbage. I will toss it soon."
The Tablet enhance performance with my Kernel settings provided to all the ROM are as follow:
Makes the Tablet run like a Desktop computer or a Laptop: ( not like phone or a mobile device )
A swap partition ( provides the use of more memory )
Remove all the power restrictions to slow the CPU to maximize battery.
Make the CPU works at it's highest frequency only when need it and be stable.
Allocate the full 1 GB of RAM ( HPT_MaXtreme Kernel only )
This is the universal rule that applies to anything.
( More power or energy = faster speed )
( Less power or energy = slower speed )
Regarding the battery drain:
The Tablet is extremely optimize for streaming media:
The original ROM stocks provide no more than 2 MB of buffer, with my Kernel settings is 6 MB of buffer and can be setup even higher!
With my kernel settings the Tablet can stream HD 1080 24/7 with no issues.
That extra Power means more electricity, there is no way around it and the reason that I always say keep the Tablet charging at all time, even while streaming if allows.
To really know the health condition ( capacity ) of the battery do the following:
open a command prompt or terminal on a PC with the novacom driver an enter:
novacom -t open tty://
then
battery status
Example:
[email protected]:~$ novacom -t open tty://
battery status
battery present
voltage: 4113840
percentage: 100
current: -861562
capacity: 6483200
] a6 version
The capacity is the true battery energy :
