Hola!
I'm looking to use Kies sync over WiFi to sync my S3 with my networked desktop PC. The PC is not connected to my network wirelessly, it is hiredwired into a switch which is in turn wired into my router. The S3 obviously connects wirelessly.
Question then is how do I configure Kies Air to connect to Kies running on the PC? The instructions within Kies suggest I need to 'share my wireless connection' on my PC, but my PC is hard wired. Surely Kies just runs as a listener service on a port and the S3 client talks directly over TCP/IP?
Have Samsung just made this way too complex for themselves and us or am I missing something obvious?
Many thanks for your thoughts!

Any thoughts y'all?

Hi
I tried Kies sync over wifi before and i connected my GS3 with my hardwired computer also. It worked for me.
All i did was connect the same wifi that my computer is hardwired to and it automatically detected in my GS3.
Is there any different procedures that you have made compared to mine to use kies sync over wifi?
Kies via wifi worked for me for the first few days then stopped. I have a hardwired pc. So for several months it hasn't worked. Several kies updates & L win7 & win8.
I read about a fix, go into app settings & find 'kies via wifi' & clear the app data.
I got for the first time the kies setup configuration code to put into kies pc software. I am yet to try to sync as i run out of time. I will let you know how I go

Any body tried the USB tethering of galaxy S2? seems like Samsung did not supply the proper drivers for it to work. I loved that feature in my desire HD as it preserves the battery of the phone( better than WiFi tethering) Any body got any idea on this? thanks....
Works for me
I have an unbranded KE7 SGS2 and USB tethering works fine for me:
Settings -> Wireless and network -> Tethering and portable hotspot -> USB tethering (tick).
My XP-powered laptop then used this connection without any configuration or setup.
Mine's working fine as well.
Running KE7 on the phone, Windows 7 on the computer. Just plugged it in, the drivers installed automatically and it started working with no problems! (I'm actually posting this reply over the tethered connection).
this is really weird. My Gs2 usb tethering is not working in two of my laptops. both are working well with my desire hd. Can this be a hardware issue?
Works fine for me also...

Possibly, I would think a more likely explanation would be a problem with the USB drivers for your GS2.
It's a bit hard to say without looking at your computer. But if there was a problem with the phone, there would most likely be a lot more people reporting it. I'd say the problem is more likely on the computer end.
I might have the wrong end of the stick here, but I would like to use my laptop's broadband connection whilst in the office to use on my phone.
HTC Sense on my previous phone gave you the option when you plugged in the USB lead, does such a thing exist on the Samsung? Or even a 3rd party app that achieves the same goal?
Seems pointless using 3g in the office when I have a fibre connection out to the internet.

I think what you mean is using the pc/laptop internet connection to surf the net on the phone while it is connected via usb to the pc/laptop.
Well the answer to that is sadly this phone does not support that..and like you said..i miss this feature coming from desire hd..

Yes..but still you have to use wifi to connect your phone to the internet.,actually there is a free program for windows 7 that does just that..connectify will make your pc into a hotspot...
Anyway..people who are using htc devices prior to SGS2 will miss this simple yet important feature thanks to samsung

I connected my phone via usb last night in the hope of letting the phone use my PC cable broadband connection. I can never get game hub to load, it always says it needs a working network connection. I thought game hub would use my T-Mobile web n walk connection. After connecting the phone via usb and enabling usb tethering, it successfully found and installed 2 drivers. Then going back to game hub while still connected to usb, it still said it needed a working connection. So what exactly is USB tethering meant to do?

What you sucessfully achived is that your pc now can use your phone mobile internet connection when it is plugged in via usb...that is usb tethering for samsung( that is what i understand). There is no way yet to allow this phone to use your pc's internet connection while the phone is connected via usb unlike on htc's phones.

I see. So in fact, tethering is completely and utterly useless.
hello i shifted to using GS2 from my blackberry (so im a bit of a noob as ive been using blackberry for years)
i have a bit of a confusion here. i have a problem with usb tethering, do you plug in your phone to ur pc/laptop first then only you go to settings> wireless and network> tethering and portable hotspot > tick usb tethering on your GS2 or you tick the usb tethering in settings> wireless and network> tethering and portable hotspot then only you plug in your phone via usb to your laptop/pc.
When i plug in my GS2 to my laptop, i couldnt press anything on my phone,it says 'press home key to quit samsung kies', if i do it then i will lose the usb connection, so i tried going to settings> wireless and network> tethering and portable hotspot > tick usb tethering, and then connect my GS2 to my laptop, but there is no connection between my laptop and my GS2.
i tried going to settings> applications> development > tick usb debugging, unfortunately when after doing that, when i connect my GS2 to laptop, my laptop says no driver for the device, so there is no autoplay or icon of my phone on the 'my computer' folder my lapop. in short i couldnt access my phone through usb.
Im sorry if my words are confusing, its so hard to put it in words.
i really2 need help, as i need to use the internet from my phone as he internet in my college sucks. thank you
What i'm doing is connecting the phone to PC via USB, then the 'usb tethering' checkbox lights up and I can tap on it to activate it. Also have usb debug mode enabled. Try using it with Kies closed/turned off. I'm using Windows 7 if that helps.
i have successfully use usb tethering on win7. i install kies v2.0.1.11053_99. reboot laptop. run kies, go to Tools> Install driver. reboot after finish. connect SGS2 with usb, enable usb tether and i can use internet on my laptop. using sub tether rite now.
fyi, i've tried with samsung usb driver only installation but cannot use usb tether becos i think it did not install phone modem driver.
usb tethering
Is there any application like the one available in HTC devices for usb connection..? I dont like the way the Samsung designed the application on the SGS2 ./. HTC really great..
Install Kies by Samsung
Install Kies by Samsung
the issue with the usb tethering option not being availavle is the network provider blocking this
If you want them to unblock you have to pay them a small fee,,
Wankers
I have just picked up a GTab 16gb from PC world, they seem to have stock left despite this ban.
There is a couple of problems I have had already:
I have a MacBook Pro (10.7 Lion) and want to drop some files on to the device. So I installed Kies downloading the latest version from the Samsung website 1.0.0.11081_4. I tried adding some video files to the Kies program. I add a folder, it looks through the folder and then says no video files found!!
Next I though to connect the tab as an external drive. Is this possible?
I know there is wifi transfer apps out there to send files over, but would prefer to do this over cable. Any advice on a way of doing this with a Mac?
Any help is much appreciated
Also I tried connecting with Debugging mode to see if that help. But no success with that either
Also Android File Transfer application doesn't seem to work in normal or debugged mode
This is only way I could transfer files!
My MAC with lion would not connect to the 10.1 wireless or USB. Today on PC World they had an App WIFI File Explorer. Free download crippled and $1.60 Pro version. It is in the Market & Amazon.
I have the pro version and can transfer files wirelessly now. To me it was worth the $ rather than fight with Samsung.
from what I understand, kies doesn't work with lion. snow leopard is the latest OS that it works fairly decent with. And considering the patent wars and rocky relationship, I don't see Samsung really putting any priority in developing support either.
I have the same problem (Lion). To be honest Kies is awful so you're not missing out. I use File Expert to transfer via wifi. Its pretty quick and nice to not have to fiddle with cables.
I hope Samsung stop messing around! iTunes is awful, but Kies is a joke.
Ok glad not just me with problems with Kies on a Mac. It does seem kies is universaly hated.
I have tried a few wireless options, es explorer, ftp server and filezilla which both worked well in transfering the movie files.

Kies does work with Lion - you just need to install an earlier version and then upgrade.
However, whenever I transferred a DivX to my Tab using Kies, there were always playback problems - picture breaking up, artifacts etc. Initially I thought it was a an issue with the tablet itself as they played flawlessly on my Asus TF. However, I tried using a WiFi transfer apps and finally everything clicked into place and I could play the videos correctly.
Regards,
Dave
My experience exactly.
I got Kies on my Mac and then found it was useless.
Wifi transfer of files seems to be the only way to go. Maybe this will improve in the future, but in reality I think wifi transfer will be fine.
Are you sure you you choose the skies in the Setting of your GT before your connecting?
if not, i wonder whether this way can help you:
before you connect your GT to PC, setup your Galaxy Tab for Kies connection following the steps: press the Menu key. In the Menu interface, select Settings>Wireless and network>USB settings>Samsung Kies.
Note: Ensure your USB cable is unplugged.
hope this can help you.
I also have a UK tab and the settings you describe above are not possible. Under wireless and network there are only the following:
Flight mode
Wifi
Wifi settings
Kies Via Wifi (doesn't find Macs)
Bluetooth
Bluetooth settings
VPN
I've been trying to share internet with my SGS2 to my girlfriend macbook air with no success.
I installed kies and driver (via kies internal menus) but when I plug the device with the usb cable nothing happens on the computer.
I tried with or without MTP mode, but nothing happens, even kies doesnt shows any device connected.

Anyone?
Its very important for me, but the topic went far far away in the last few pages...
Hello,
My PC has a wired connection to my router, through a cable.
I was trying to activate "Kies Via Wifi" on my S3, while it was connected to my router through wifi. The S3 identified my PC, but when I chose it, It got an error message saying "Kies Via Wifi stopped".
While I did it, Kies program was opened on my PC.
Can "Kies via Wifi" work on computers without a wireless wifi adapter, meaning a computer connected to the router through a wired cable? If yes, how to I make it work?
Thanks!
Anyone...?
It should work fine as long as the phone and pc are on the same subnet. Wireless or wired shouldn't make any difference.

Ok, thanks. This is also whay I thought. But I wonder if someone has actually managed to do it.
The instruction on Kies say refer to "Kies tray agent", which I don't think I have.
And anyway, when I choose my PC, the S3 just go black for 2 seconds, then display the "Kies via wifi stopped" message.

I see the tray task running in Task Manager, but it doesn't show up in the actual tray even after a couple of reboots. There are very weird instructions for it in the help screen, none of which you should have to do - like turn off Internet Connection Sharing? This would almost never be on...
I have Kies installed on my desktop, which uses Ethernet, it couldn't see it. I don't think I'm going to bother to put it on my laptop...If it worked it might be nice for converting videos and what not. Oh well...
This is a avoid kies forum .

Ok, I've verified that the process KiesTrayAgent.exe is running on my PC.
Still, when I choose my PC from "Kies via wifi", the screen goes black for 2 seconds and then the "Kies via wifi stopped" message.
Now, I know that many think that Kies is a bad program. Perhaps it is. But I just hate it when I have a feature that doesn't work at all on my S3...

I don't have time for wireless and my only wifi is my hotspot from my phone, so I suppose if there is a wifi phone to pc app that can use the phone as the wifi that could work, but I'd prefer the fastest usb method. I had it a little while back with the cheetah sync app but they stopped supporting it and I didn't get to install it on my new phone, so...
Anyone know what app if any can do this?? It's so far been proving not easy to find if at all. I guess no one is syncing via usb. Any ideas?
Not sure if synchronize ultimate can sync via usb but you could try.
Tasker should be able to do that as well, although this might be tricky to 'build'.
