I have the Korean Galaxy s3 (quad core 2gb of ram) and am overall pleased with the phone. I'm sorry if this is the wrong section. I wasn't sure where it was supposed to go.
A couple of minor "complaints" though.
I know Quadrant score is not accurate all of the time but, for the specs of the phone, the Quadrant score seems a bit low? It's roughly 5300 every time I run it. Correct me if I'm wrong but, it should be a bit higher?
But, the main problem I'm having seems to be the High ram usage and the amount of applications open.
I read the article about how unused ram is a waste of ram. I see the points in the article.
But what's strange is that I have barely any applications running/open at the same time and my ram usage is 1.15gb out of 1.75gb. And when I clear the memory, it says 50 applications were (what the??) closed. Every single time after about 30 minutes or so it'll say 50 applications were closed.
Also even if I clear the ram, it'll never go below 600mb out of 1.75gb.
The phone does lag sometimes. I just find it strange that the ram usage is so high and there are so many "unknown" applications running when I've barely opened any applications.
Forgive my "noobness". I'm still a bit new with this.

Does the lag go when you've cleared the ram? I only have 177mb of ram free but my phone is running fine. Apps open and close instantly. I've only ever had lag when the phone dropped to 50mb of ram (ICS ROM) but generally speaking you shouldn't have to keep clearing the ram. I've hit that button once in the 1 month I've had this phone just to see how low ram usage could go to, but really just leave it alone
Thought I'd add in that a lot of those apps in ram will more than likely be things you've downloaded. If your running a stock rom however or you haven't frozen things you'll never need then I'm sure your list of apps in ram will be nothing like mine. The only things in my ram are apps that I use often. Heres a rundown of what is currently in my ram. I'll put the ones I never use in bold

I use almost everything in that list, but my rom has bloat removed. Its more than likely that your killing apps like Allshare, Maps, NFC Settings, MapServiceSamsung, Samsung Account etc. Lots of things that you probably don't use. Either way though, with 600mb of ram left that shouldn't be an issue. I wouldn't mind having 600mb of ram left, I'd force the contacts menu into it lol
The way android manages memory, is to keep apps it expects to need in RAM thus keeping access time to these apps low. As you open a memory intensive app it shuts some open apps down to free memory, if there is free memory it will reopen commonly used apps back up ready for use.

Hey!
Why dont u disable those apps that u really dont use!
Like I have disabled most of the samsung stuffs like allshare, samsung apps, scloud, svoice and etc etc...
And u dont even need to root your device to do so...
and if u need them then u can also enable it!
so its a safe method!
Just go to settings, application manager and there you will find options to disable the apps!
It works as most of the samsung apps and services are the main reason of lag and high ram usage!
Hope it will help u

Ah, so V6 supercharge script isn't working for Xperia U or say any phone with 512 mb ram. Well, we have always concentrated on freeing RAM memory than actually using it. Because we think the more free RAM we have, the more Apps we can use at the same time. But guys that's not how Android works. You should let your phone use all the RAM memory it has. By limiting it, you're only telling your phone to keep a certain amount of memory "free" all the time and android does its job well by doing it. So if you tell your phone to keep 125 mb free it will keep it and kill other apps for it, even the launcher . That's unused space. And yeah now you will think that when apps are loaded on ram they are active and using CPU time, NO! They are paused because you're not using them. Android automatically excludes the apps which have not recently been used from the RAM as soon as you load an App which was not loaded earlier.
Now let's talk about the values. I've kept 12,18,25,40,45,50 by using the 10th option from the V6 script.
Launcher rarely redraws. (Actually not yet happened with me )
No running apps are restarting.
services.jar not patched. Only using OOM settings. No extra kernel settings either. 75% charged
I seriously recommend not patching services.jar, just set these values or you can set your values to see the difference in performance.
That's all for now. Enjoy!
Only 13 mb RAM memory is free. I know the image isn't that clear.

My phone isn't lagging at all. But facing battery problems a bit. I'm working on that now.
odd
It is kind of odd because my phone tends to lag more after I run the v6 script. But on the other hand, my gaming experience improves. Am I doing it wrong?

WRONG!
My phone is fast and smooth now. When I share something from facebook to another app say Whatsapp, and when I come back to facebook I don't have to wait for facebook to load again. Even after that my launcher doesn't redraw.
Few bugs are solved now.
Guys, there were a few bugs but now I've overcome them. They're under testing. Soon i'll release them. I guarantee you that by applying my settings, the battery percent will take few minutes to drop. Before it used to take a minute to drop 2-3%. Now 1% will take more than that.

well that's interesting.. I haven't tried it on JB tho. BTW I'm using Greenify to hibernate apps. But still i faced redraws. So I put values like very low. 8,12,22,30,35,40 current values and i'm testing this. Yday I patched services.jar and so far it's working fine. Until i'm pretty sure about it I'm not recommending patching it.
So as of recently my battery life seems to be just terrible. I haven't done anything weird or started using any apps that are doing things in the background to drain my battery. I've been using the Devil kernel on and off (i thought it was having a negative effect on my battery life, but even a stock CM doesn't last long.
I should also not that when my battery does get to about 2-3% or less when im using the phone the screen brightness will start to flicker, and that if i turn my phone on after the battery having died in most cases if it tries to boot it results in a bootloop which is only fixed after i have wipe my data partitions.
Here are some screenshots of my battery stats from my usage this morning (and a few others ive taken):

Not really relevant but it also has a shattered screen
Something could be off with the media process. Try without an sd card. Some people (myself included) have had problems with the sd card being unmounted and mounted again, causing the media process to rescan the whole sd, huge battery hogger.
Edit: also try using better battery stats (free on the xda android apps section) to see if you can identify the problem.

at the moment i don't have an sd card installed, i did have one but took it out to use it for other stuff. Will try better battery stats and see if that gives me any more info as to where all my battery is going.
The Android OS stat being so high compared to Screen (normally the largest consumer) suggests you have something running. If you tap the Android OS line it will open and show you what is running. That gives you a start on what should or should be on. Haven't used Better Battery Stats but ES File Explorer and ES Task Manager are good tools, and I have Battery Booster which can Optimise the system by killing unneeded apps. Also DL Greenify - if hibernates apps and saves memory and battery without affecting performance noticeably.
note: I like ES Task Manager because you can kill apps then hit refresh and see which ones restart - lets you have a good idea what is needed versus what hasn't been closed after use.
So i ran my phone from 100-5 and had better battery stats measure things, i took some screenshots can anyone see anything unusual?

use an app like GREENIFY to hibernate the apps when not in use. if that doesn't help, change the kernel to like siyah and check the battery performance. if this is common on any custom rom and custom kernel, flash a stock ones and return to warranty and handle the phone to service center. :good:

well, the most wakelocks are caused by Maps, but your CPU governor is messed up - your CPU is at the max power almost always. What kernle are you using and are you using any CPU tweaking apps?
Maps seems like the cause:
Your stats show 4 hrs in deep sleep and about 3 hrs awake, but only 22 minutes of screen time.
And amongst the wake locks (stuff keeping your phone awake) maps seems like the winner, with skype following close by.
You need root, the following things should help:
Try converting maps to user app (not installed to system) and try the app greenify to suspend it while not being used. Or freeze it directly with titanium backup and unfreeze only when needed.
Try turning off wifi and gps location off unless you need some app to know your location (in adjustments).
Also use some cpu speed control app. You can limit your max cpu speed to 1ghz or lower without loosing performance (unless playing heavy games). Also you can create a cpu profile with about 300mhz when screen is turned off, which is enough for music playing.
Strange seems like my cpu doesn't want to scale down from 1400mhz, its just sitting there constantly :| back on the stock kernel now btw
So all I have done is root it and install twrp with Odin 3.0. I see other users online with a stock task manager app (which I can't find but would love a link!) They complain of only 2.3gb total usable ram. My task killer apps say at most 1,200mb/1.75gb. Should I not have access to at least 2gb of free ram after killing all apps with low security or at the least 2gb of ram that's not used by the system?
Thanks

This is the highest amount of free ram I have been able to achieve. Using advanced task killer pro. Am I wrong or should I not see a number closer to 3gb? The 1,700mb can only be achieved if I kill everything immediately after boot. Apps security is lowest value.
Sent from my SM-N900P using xda app-developers app
Your phone reserves some of that for video memory which i can't remember how much it ends up being. Honestly there isn't a reason to even have a task killer on anything after android 2.3. All it does is kill apps that will silently relaunch I'm the background as background process to make for quick relaunch and use power in the process; Unless your running 20+ apps at once it's pointless.
Sent from my SM-N900P using xda app-developers app
It takes memory to run your phone's software and installed apps.
Edit: my available ram after a reset and clearing the ram. I have removed what I don't use from the stock rom so my numbers won't be the same. As far as I understand you cant free up the whole 3gb ever.
That's what I tried to do via something called stock app uninstaller or something but I'm still only seeing 1500mb when I kill all my apps. My gf's s4 says 1200mb via same app killer. Can you recommend an app to do so with? I also cannot find the stock Samsung app killer ANYWHERE but see the app in my system apps folder, is there a weird method to access it?

Unused RAM is wasted RAM. As it fills up, the oldest programs drop off and the RAM uses the most recent apps to hold for quick access. You are accomplishing nothing by trying to free up more RAM.

Mmmm. I guess technically that's mostly correct. Though a bit misleading.
Ok.quick primer.
Yes, android pre loads things it thinks you may use into memory, this is a good thing and reduces launch times.
And yes, as android needs free memory it will close apps that have not been opened recently and attempt to free that memory.
In most situations for most people this is perfectly acceptable behavior, and is how you'd normally want your phone to function.
However there are gains in both speed, and battery life to be had by modifying how this process is done.
And one of the simplest things you can do to help is to remove everything from your phone you don't use.
That is part of the issue, apps you never use and have no need for will also get loaded into memory, this isn't really a huge issue as they just sit there holding space till its needed for something else. Though there can be a noticeable improvement to not having useless things in memory.
There is in fact a (admittedly small) performance hit to loading and unloading apps, especially ones that never get called, to and from the memory unnecessarily.

The phone runs well, but it can barely keep chrome and a settings page open in the background. There should be around 1.4gb free in the background.
Flashing other roms should help, however trying to unlock the bootloader has proven challenging.
I've found disabling the Google app, and removing permissions from the default Camera and OnePlus Launcher to help significantly.
Here's my stock RAM usage without anything disabled:

My screenshot didn't include this, but Camera and OnePlus Launcher are just below, too, despite me using a third party camera (OpenCamera) and launcher (Nova Launcher).
I disabled Google, disabled Assistant, and force killed and removed all permissions from Camera and OnePlus Launcher, and now I can keep 3 or even 4 apps in memory! Like, I can switch back and forth between GMail, Firefox, and Settings without any of them ever leaving memory.
I suspect my removing permissions on the other two apps didn't do a ton, so I think it was disabling Google that did the trick. Not having Google Assistant running 100% of the time must have opened up a lot of RAM....
Here's a fuller screenshot of my memory usage for the "past day" which includes a lot of time before I did this, and some time after:
Here's a screenshot for the past 3 hours, which is entirely after I did this:
I can't remember my exact total memory usage before, but I think it sat around 3.5GB. The change to behavior was immediate after disabling Google, but memory usage was still up to 3.2 / 3.7GB after a few hours. The next day, it's down to 2.5GB / 3.7GB.
I think disabiling Google and clearing those permissions somehow reduced System memory usage as well?
I suspect, like you said, we'll be able to get an even more effecient system with custom ROMs, and that might make it feasible to re-enable Google Assistant. But for now, this is a huge improvement and I'll be leaving it off.
This was not a very scientific post, but it made such a difference, I had to post it. Could someone else who's experiencing this try it, take full screenshots of the developer options -> app memory usage before and after and confirm if it's entirely Google which makes the difference?
I'm currently seeing if I can disable the oneplus launcher, but it definitely seems to be breaking recents. Changing to nova launcher may possible reduce active ram utilization, although I'm not certain yet. Disabling the google assistant absolutely improved ram usage, so i'm keeping that off. I wish we could bind the gesture that brough up google assistant to just a general google search, but whatever at this point.
BTW, the best way to check active ram usage is under developer settings under running services.
Update to previous post: I disabled quite literally everything I could, replaced stock camera with gcam, I'm still using the oneplus launcher for recents and I'm sitting between 1.4 and 1.6 gb free. This is including not including the 200mb the settings app is utilizing while open. As such, in reality, it should be idling closer to 1.6-1.8 gb. I currently have android os utilizing 1.4 gb, which is the area I'd love to get down as that is the biggest chunk of ram usage. Either way, there seems to be progress and I'll see how it runs over the coming days.
To be clear, I removed permissions from OnePlus Launcher, but I couldn't seem to find a way to actually disable it... So it's still running in the background on my phone, in addition to Nova Launcher. But I'm glad that helped, and than disabling Google helped for you too!

You can disable it via an adb command, however it removes the recents capability so you have to leave it running. Switching launchers nets you a total ram usage of 67mb for one plus laucher + whatever the other launcher is using, however it already uses 127 mb when the oneplus launcher is the main launcher basically making it a wash.
The phone is much improved, but even now the app management is definitely too severe imo
Even when my Xperia 1 IV is idle, it's using 47% of available RAM (4.97GB), which seems a lot.
Is there a good or go to memory management app that works well with the Xperia 1 IV?
How can I free some RAM up and keep it as freed up as possible?
There doesn't seem to be any memory info in the settings. Storage, yes, but. not memory.. ??

Forget about freeing up the memory manually.
The device is keeping whatever is necessary in the memory based on your usage, like apps that you use the most to provide you the fastest response when you open them. Plus android system is growing in size.
In cases when you play games or use something that is requiring more memory the phone will deal with it automatically. Swiping apps from recent is more than enough.
All those memory managing apps are total bs and making it worse, as they will force close the apps, but android will restart them again. You have more than enough RAM, so stop looking at the usage, unless you experience lags and wanna figure out which app causing them.

How can I view the memory usage without a 3rd-party app?

I didn't realize it needed so much for that, it seems a lot relative to the overall RAM.
In the Memory use section, it's showing 5.7GB average, with System UI using 196MB and Android OS using 2GB.
Android System 431MB, Google Play Services 316MB, Google 250MB, com.glgjing.captain 223MB, Side sense 179MB, Xperia Home 131MB, GBoard 123MB and others all under 100MB , totalling the 5.7GB average.
Does that seem as you'd expect?

Seems alright to me. I think since there is more than enough RAM, the OS is fully loaded (ot at least the most part) in it, as it's faster than storage.
You shouldn't be worrying about RAM for at least 3 years.
.....and if only it would stop killing the apps every few hours....... it feels like it has 1.2GB of RAM and not 12. Honestly, my XZ2 was much better at that with 4x less RAM.

Why do you want to free up RAM on a Linux device as long your device behaves as it should?
It's Android 13. It seems to be normal for the Sony. I have noticed that the "idle" load is quite a bit lower on the S23 Ultra, despite the Samsung bloatware.
By using dark theme it will use more ram as i noticed on my phone. Even my win 11 devices behaving the same way. Normally i am around 50% but switching to dark theme will go up to 7.6GB usage. I have tryed several task killers but they just causing issues. My 1 IV is rooted and when i updated it to android 13 it got worst memory usage and thi idiot dynamic coloring peed me off so i went back to android 12. After fresh install and root and removing all sort of google apps and facebook and built in junks. My ram usage was 3.6GB But at this point only the cameras and messaging , contacts left running. As soon i've installed magisk and lsposed and started adding modules it arrived around 5.4GB
