just looked at the update page and they changed it from Q4 to "further plans coming soon".... no ICS or maybe they're planning on just going with jelly bean? From what i hear about motorola we might not be getting anything :/ https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
Just started a tread on the discussions forums at Sprint. I am so fed up with the problems on this phone. And seeing that we as customer have been take for a ride. No words from Motorola or Sprint.
Is all BS if they were going to send the update why did they put it "under development" for months?

Exactly man. This phone is only a year old and we're still stuck on GB? Smh. We've been waiting patiently to at least get the drivers and libs to make our ROMs perfect but after learning this im putting my phone up for trade. First they push us back, now we might not even get it! Its bull.

Of course they did. I thought it was somewhat obvious that if the Atrix changed its update status as would the Photon. We need not focus on our phone. If Atrix gets it, we will too, bottom line. So we need to help our brothers over there in whatever way we can as it will benefit us all. Don't lose hope, our efforts are making a difference. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31943331

I am wondering how many photons are out there? A couple thousand I assume.
But, the worst part is that I fell they have been playing us all a long. Between Sprint and Motorola.
Sprint know that this phone has problems, they just won't acknowledge it. And sending an update to lock the device even more, I have never seem anything like that. Ever.
Motorola is clearing stock of Photon 4G on their website with free car dock @$349 without contract...
It seems like we have been fooled by the lollipop of ics so that we retain Photon 4G and not move to other phone or operator till Photon Q is released... :banghead:
If so this will be my last motorola phone ever... If not then simply they are wasting their time in locking bootloader or with other security coding...
Funniest mobile phone company I've ever seen.

Photon.... makes me mad
It makes me disgusted with the lack of support form Motorola. With all the Droid updates on verizon and no support for the Photon on Sprint seems like we're less than an after thought. I upgraded from an original EVO and the support for that was at least bearable. As far as rooting with the Photon unlocking the bootloader kills 4G Wimax. If I'm going to lose that might as well use an upgrade and ditch the Photon.
This is definitely my last moto phone!
Sent from my MB855 using xda app-developers app
i'm not hopeful about that but i think they are planning jump to jb directly.
droid 3 is a 2011 phone but status is: "Will remain on Gingerbread (Android 2.3)"
photon also is a 2011 phone but our status isn't certain like droid 3's status.
I'm not taking any bets either, but I think they will skip ICS and go to JB.
This will most likely be my last Moto phone.. I went from the Original Evo to the photon because I liked the build quality of Motorola phones. Friend of mine had a droid x and it seemed very well built. My photon has not had any of the build issues that my Evo did but i have been less than happy with the locked bootloader and lack of support on Motorola's part I assumed that when google bought out Motorola mobility we would be getting updates on par or faster than other manufacturers Guess that was a fools dream. Another reason i bought this phone was because i bought a xoom when they came out and was impressed with the tegra 2 and the quality of the xoom. My son has the original transformer and while it is thinner than the xoom, it feels kinda cheap and has some bright spots on the screen. xoom has had none of the issues of the transformer besides my 4 year old putting a small dent in the aluminum backing a couple weeks after i purchased it. I would love to dump this phone but since Sprint changed their upgrade policy i'm stuck with it for another year instead of being able to upgrade every year like I used to be able to. Was unlocked for a good while and enjoyed the ICS ports but got tired of sprints SOOOOO slow 3g and preferred the ability of having 4g when i want it. At this point i wish Motorola would just leak their build if they have one and let the devs here do the rest. They are pretty much there but without proper driver libs we are pretty much screwed. Becoming pretty annoyed with Motorola and SPRINT as a whole. Phone bill keeps going up and as far as i can tell just about every carrier in my area has faster data speeds. I was pretty pissed the other day when a coworker with an EVO flashed to cricket was able to access the internet in a building we were working in and i was stuck ROAMING.
Punit Soni said that "Further plans coming soon" means they are still trying to figure out whether they are going to update that particular phone or not. So we as a community need to tell him that we need ice cream sandwich on our phones. whether it is because of lag or any other problems nwe need to convince him and Motorola to update our phones.

Hmm. wonder what factors they consider? How many users there are? Whether we are likely to upgrade within the motorola family of products? Presumably, how hard it is to do, but that's certainly not anythingwe can influence.

It looks like the photon/Atrix ate the only phones in this status. The jump from jb from ics it's not nearly as large as the jump from gb to ics so I do consider this as an option. The photon is also listed as one of the devices that they promised jb updates to just last month. I'm hopeful but we're still playing the waiting game.

No photon ics????
I just find out about the new "Further plans coming soon" status on the ICS photon, so I decided to contact Motorola about this, and this is how it went: (please keep in mind that English is not my first language, so the whole time I was trying to be as polite as you can be when you are this frustrated and the language barrier is not helping)
Denz: Hi, my name is Denz. How may I help you?
John Santiago: I just find out that you guys change the photon ics status to "Further plans coming soon" what does that mean????????

Denz: Thanks. Be right back. Please bear with me.
Denz: As I have checked, at the moment, we do not have any information as to when the next update will become available or if ICS will be available for Photon. Motorola is a company committed to quality in all the steps of the this process We want to ensure that this upgrade will comply with Motorola quality standards before we officially release ICS for our phones. Never say never, but at least not in the upcoming year.
What I don't understand is why people are bothering customer service reps about this. You aren't going to get a straight answer from them because they probably know just as much as you do. Its not fair to them.

It is with great sadness and anger that our "investment" of my much beloved Photon 4G will not be getting Ice Cream Sandwich (Android 4.0). I found out today when I decided to engage Motorola to find out if the Photon 4G will get the update. (See Screenshot of the Chat). So unless CyanogenMod gives us a custom ROM, we just got shafted by Motorola.
UPDATE:
It now appears to be a definite "maybe". Attached is a another screenshot from Moto's Forums. I know I'm getting slack for posting this, but common someone had to look into this. Don't shoot the messenger!
Side Note:
Regardless of where these "reps" are located, these people are suppose to represent Motorola. If they can't get their answers straight then its a bad reflection on the company.

i talked with a sprint employee today and they said the galaxy nexus WILL NOT be coming to sprint. so being rather upset about it i asked about the iphone 5 and they told me there is no such thing and there are no plans for it.
so not only did i learn that the packing slip showing the galaxy nexus for sprint was wrong, but apple is no longer going to be making iphones.
just figured id post that info in here rather than starting my own thread.
but on a serious note moto reps are told nothing that they dont need to know, just the same as everyone else
Haha. Funny man . Well since no information was out there regarding the update, I went the route of inquiring with them. I really hope that they were wrong, but right now (unless someone can get a different answer from them) this will be fact and I'll wait for a port over.

I think that once the photon gets it's fully unlocked bootloader development will really take off as right now not a lot of people are willing to unlock their phone. Also we got two different guys working on CM7.1 so I would be shocked if we don't having people jumping on CM8 when the source is dropped. Personally I wouldn't worry too much about it, we'll get it and hopefully without motoblur(CM8).
This is very disappointing news if it turns out to be true. I have wanted this phone since it was announced, I have loved it since I bought it. I have been able to get over the locked bootloader but it would be very frustrating if ICS is denied to this phone and especially since I have to wait 20 some months before my next equipment discount.
This really means nothing, those are the first supported devices that they are planning for. Motorola already tweeted saying that other devices will get ICS within 6 weeks of Google's push.

Those reps work in a damn call center. I find no merit in this thread or the rep you spoke to. As a previous poster stated, they are only given information they need to do their job...which is answer phones or messages and they rarely do that right! Besides, motorola would make this type of information official on their own, not through some jerk off answering IMs

Hey buddy you don't have to be all hostile. I only relayed what they said. They represent Motorola and at this time this is the only fact they've given out regarding the fate of the Phone. If you find "No Merit" on this thread they why bother chiming in?
I'm on a FACT finding mission here because we owners want the latest OS. Yes this phone has the specs to do it I agree with you there, but someone in Motorola needs to take this Phone serious and come out with a timeline or something to let us know what is going on. Unfortunetaly this has close to official that I was able to get.
Lol all I have to say is your 100% correct the agents at moto do not know when software updates. The only way ill believe anything is if a Dev from Moto says so. This is from The knowledge of actually working in a call center. They wont know **** lol

Nearly every phone I have researched on Android has gotten one upgrade from where it started, and some have gotten two. This phone started GB, it'll eventually get ICS. There simply has not been an official announcement yet, and I have a feeling the call center won't know anything until we do. Also, there isn't an iphone 5 YET. There's no way Apple will give up on such a popular gold mine. I just have a feeling call centers deal in official, announced information, not rumors. ICS for photon and iphone 5 release and Sprint Nexus Prime are all rumors at this point. A call center saying no doesn't mean anything.
Lol! Hostile? Bud, I wasn't being hostile toward you...all I'm saying is those morons don't know jack. We will have our ICS....Don't fret my little 'MoPho'ers!

i have to agree that if you think that little peon answering the phone knows anything but how to connect you to support in India you are sadly mistaken
I don't care if gets ICS, I love the way it runs with GB! It has been the best experience with android in a phone after HTC Hero, Moment, EVO, Nexus s and ET4G.

If we don't get the official release of ICS for Photon maybe coz Photon sold by Sprint carrier. You should ask Sprint rather than Motorola coz the update will be made if Sprint ask Motorola support.
But I'm pretty sure we will get ICS official or not coz someone must be on to it.

I know someone who works for Verizon corporate (not retail). Their techs definitely do have access to pre-release updates. It's how Verizon begins testing things before pushing them out to the public. He told me that the main reason Verizon takes its time with updates is that they test everything very thoroughly before release to limit calls to customer service once the OTA is pushed out. They want to make sure as many bugs as possible are squashed ahead of time. It's a wise angle to take, but doesn't leave "normal consumers" feeling all that great about things.
And what about retail version, who test it if there is no carrier? I suppose Motorola itself, now compare its speed (and stability) with your carrier - who will win?

yea im going to do the same thing once my phone comes in. i just signed up for sprint today and my phone should arrive by saturday. last motorola android i owned was the cliq and it took them well over a year with the same promise to bring 2.0 or 2.1 to that phone from 1.5 after several delays. cyanogenmod had a stable release for that phone several months before the official update came out. by then i didnt even have the phone anymore lol switched to the mytouch3g slide.
By the time ICS is released in Q3......Jelly Bean should be out in the alpha stage
...just saying...
Maybe it will get here a bit sooner. At least this newer info will get rid of all the many posts about "Will Photon get ICS?". Very annoying. I never doubted for a second the Photon wouldn't get ICS. Google wants this on all devices capable of running it and have said so from the beginning. ICS is just slow rolling out it seems.
Anyways, for those of us that need full functionality CM9 isn't an option yet. One of the great things about the Photon is HDMI out and Webtop feature. I am not willing to lose those and as I understand there is no way to activate Webtop on CM9 yet. Someone please correct me if I am wrong. However, 4g I can live without (not in my area) and having the camera working now is a great step to final.

Ok, let me clarify. We all know Al will never be president, therefore, I believe although announced, Moto will pull the plug at some point before Q3.
Next, the AT&T note has GB, the Sprint Note, expected this summer, is expected (again expected!) to have ICS more over to top AT&T!

Sure, just like I got WiMAX 4G! Lets be honest, who here keeps a phone more than a year? If they pushed this to Q2 maybe, but for us to wait with all the new hardware coming out WITH ICS, I'm surprised Moto made the announcment, they could have saved the development work, but we will see I'm sure. And even with me getting the Note, I'm not getting rid of the Photon anytime soon. like 2013 Q2 if my income tax is late, haha!
As bad as the SGS2 is on Sprint, you better take a long look at the Note before you jump on it. Ill never own another Samsung device. They have officially lost me at this point. Im waiting for HTCs next big thing. They seem to be the best of the bunch from what we have to chose from.

It is a business phone so it is up to Sprint on when they will allow us an upgrade. If they are now on a 2-year upgrade plan for even businesses than I will for sure have the Photon for over a year. We can't afford to keep upgrading otherwise.
Also, wasn't it you who was just complaining in another thread about not having WiMax and "what if I want to keep my Photon for 10 years?" point? If you don't keep a phone for more than a year why was that even a valid point on your end?
Not trying to be harsh with these questions, just observations and curiousity mainly.

You mean the SGS2 where they are testing official ICS leaks right now as we speak?
I've not had a single issue with mine (nor with my wife's Photon beyond a few kinks which were worked out fairly quickly).
HTC? Really? After the 3D and assorted crap (Design anyone?) I'm beginning to think the og Evo was a fluke. Thanks, but no thanks.

@ Forum member "TheShackSpecialits" this is just for you!. I stated with EOL Sprint will never let us get ICS. You stated we will because manufactures control OTA updates. I then gave you several reasons why they dont. This, my friend is for you!!
Not only did this article verify what I said, It also gave Motorola a grade of "D", the lowest of ANY cell manfacture for doing OTA Upgrades. This has to bring up the question, who s**t on who?

I'm confused about your logic on this and frankly it seems that your "I'll show you that we're screwed" attitude seems to make this irrelevant. But for the sake of anyone else reading this and getting utterly depressed that our amazing phone may not be getting ICS... well that's just incorrect. This page shows that ICS is currently in development (as opposed to "evaluation & planning") for the photon and is in the category of phones with at least 1GB of RAM, which I would like to consider promising.
https://forums.motorola.com/pages/00add97d6c
Also the main complaint from the article you linked to was about delayed updating of the X2. I don't even know how much longer that's been out than the Photon b/c it's seems like a LONG time.
Anywho, stop being so d**n negative!
Plus we have awesome devs that have gotten us cm9 already, and stable much earlier than most phones so I guess I don't understand the severity of the problem if you're on this site.

So some guy named Brandon Russell regurgitates another writers article and you all are gung hoe? I have some land I would like to talk to you about
@ricky, read back S-L-O-W-L-Y. I have no issues with my Photon, none at all. I might jump for a new EVO, but thats beside the point. I have no problems with the Developers here, they do, and continue to do a great job. But, my Photon is GREAT.
If all of you take my first suggestion here, In my OP in the link about, my issues is with Sprint and the way they handled business! How do you put a EOL of a device thats not even a year old, but you continue to support the original EVO (although threated a few times to shelve it?) If it breaks in May, you do not get another Photon, you get a compatable device. yes, CM9 is great! if it breaks then, then what, you rooted it, so that's blown out the water.
The second link was to clarify 2 things. 1. if Sprint is going to EOL the Photon, they are not going to support it, PERIOD! (It they keep that promise). Therefore, the Q3 promise is, for the most part, dead. That user responded by telling me the motorola controls OTA upgrades. As that article stated, reguardless of carrier or device, these are controlled by the carrier, not the manfuacture.
Lastly, to comment on my last sentence in this original post, who s**t on who? Did Sprint crap on Motorola with not enough advertisement, support, ect. Or did Motorola crap on Sprint by making Development promises they could not keep and Sprint finally said "F" it?
Learn how to name your threads appropriately, please.
Moto said rollout starts in Q3 - Q3 has NOT started yet!
And I don't care at all "who did what to who". It's just a friggin' phone man!! I've got a dozen gathering dust in the bottom of my closet. Along with a dozen computers I've given to charities, friends and families over the years.
dsims7_2000 if you are that angry and bitter why dont you go to Verizon or ATT. I would like to see ICS on the photon to but no one ever geranteed that it would get it. If it does then thats great if not oh well we still have cm9.
Into y'all feelings much? .... Welp this is my last few posts for the photon as I have a epic touch too and going to be there for awhile.. Look guys I been here for awhile like back since the winmo days HTC cingular 8125 and tmo wing.. And since cm3 ppl been just needy complaining upset at things that shouldn't matter.. Look it's just a phone g1 users was messed over hero users and a few more.. Just appreciate the phone as is cause if GB was the last OS update these threads wouldn't be happening!

Dude! Calm the F&#K down!
Moto has it officially listed as rolling out in Q3. Sprint is EOL-ing certain devices early just to make sure that all WiMax hardware is cleared out before LTE comes in so there's no confusion.
If you wanted WiMax to stick around and grow, you should've rallied more people to Sprint. Instead, everyone wanted the iPhone or they thought they could "hear everybody now" on Verizon. Now they're stuck in contracts with Data caps and insane bills. Meanwhile, we still have comparatively nice bills and unlimited data but we're all stuck with having to switch over to LTE and endure a massive network overhaul. *Shrug*
Really, the most confusion seems to be understanding what EOL actually means. It doesn't mean your phone is done with updates or that if you call support they won't help you, it mostly just means they're done selling/swapping it.
I suggest the OP re-read his linked article. It's not Sprint/USCC that's doing a crappy job of rolling out ICS, it's Motorola, which completely contradicts his claim. The carriers are certainly involved with testing and giving the final approval for OTA updates (and EOL status has nothing to do with that), but the gruntwork behind updates is done by the manufacturers.
FTR, I think it's absolutely ridiculous that it takes Motorola this long to do updates. Their dev team and code infrastructure must be absolutely horrendous considering that a small group of amateur enthusiasts are able to produce mostly working ICS ROMs within a month or two of the release of ICS -- without manufacturer-provided driver updates.

I agree very well said
I have no worries about Motorola. As was stated before, Motorola said they are developing the update for the Photon and it should be out by Q3. I'm not worried about Sprint choosing to EOL the Photon. We are going to get ICS and I'd imagine that even if Sprint choose not to support ICS that Motorola would leak it to the community. You think all these SBFs were by accident?

Sprints the reason you aren't getting it. It is Sprints phone, Motorola just made it for them. Like Foxconn makes iphones for Apple. If Sprint Eol the Photon and ends support also. There will be no official is. Im pretty sure Sprint can sue them if they released an oat update on Sprints network and their tailor made phone they paid to have made.

I'm rather new(6 months in) to the scene of flashing roms and sbf'ing and scripting and this sort of stuff. My question is this, since the Razr is Motorola's latest creation and it is said to be getting ICS starting today with an update, will this update play any role in possible development for a full blown ICS AOSP based rom (similar to CM7, I would guess) but with the elements of ICS all in one place. Without having to piece it all together to just look like ICS. Any insight on this would be cool to hear. I'm just curious, and can't upgrade until 2013
Thanks.

sir, first off you posted on the wrong forum, dx2 android dev, i ask a mod to move this to general
and tbh, i have no idea if this would affect us, but i do know the razr has an omap ti chip compared to our ****ty, locked down tegra2
I thought about where to post this and development seemed suitable. Sorry if I broke some rules or something, it just seemed like it might get more attention here being a development question and not just a general question.

which i fully understand, sir, but i dont think the razr will help us much, because of the chipset
I guess I should have clarified more, now that I think about it, I was thinking more like, would it be possible to take the pieces out of the ICS rom for the RAZR and some how incorporate them into the one of our current roms? Just different elements of the SBF file or systemui.apk. Like I said, I could be blowing smoke and sound completely ignorant about the topic, but I'm just gathering thoughts is all. And please, no need to call me sir. I'm a noob here. lol

it is my understanding that the Razr got ICS by searching project CHEESECAKE

This is kinda sorta what Dragonzkiller is doing with CM9 except he isn't pulling things directly from other systems.
I don't know how much alike the phones are but I'm willing to bet that at the very least the razrs framework might be worth glancing at.

Quick Answer: Not like you are thinking??
We won't get Official ICS, IF dzk ever gets the time away from class, we will see a PORT of cm9(which is ICS), but we will probably 'never' get ICS or any ICS Based ROM for a while. Too much stuff to do and not a lot of devs...also, personal life gets in the way a lot over on this end of Android.
It looks like the RAZR is already on the verge of taking the back seat to whatever Motorola/Verizon have on the horizon (Droid Fighter). I get an upgrade next month and have my fingers crossed in hopes that a variant of the HTC One X will come to Verzion (I would settle for an HTC Droid Incredible 4G at this point). This locked bootloader will be the death of development in the foreseeable future, if anything. Motorola makes solid hardware but doesn't want to us to play with it. It's a damn shame.

True its a shame. The locked bootloader is a big reason I gave up on my X2. The possibilities on the phone could be endless if they'd unlock it but that will never happen cuz Motorola is Big Reds B$%ch. But dragonzkiller still might pull it off for u guys with cm9 in his spare time, and hopefully he will.

It's been said already, but there is no way in hell the DX/DX2 are getting ICS from Motorola. Dragonkiller is probably the best bet and I know he mentioned in another thread he had lots of personal life stuff till at least summer.
Simple answer: No one should be buying Motorola. Send them a message. The Galaxy S III should be out soon and HTC has a decent quad core in the pipeline. Stop buying Motorola phones!
My DX2 does run better then my DX did but that's only because of DK's CM7 port. If VZW's insurance company did not give me the DX2 for a replacement of the DX I had, I would have never owned this phone. It sucks you have until 2013 but with any luck a CM9 p
ort will get done. In 2013 if the world has not ended yet and the time finally comes for your upgrade, I hope you remember Motorola screwing you and not buy another Motorola device. Don't buy into the owned by Google thing, they are still the same company and play by the same rules. Have they removed the encrypted bootloader? No and they won't because Google may own them but they are not interfering with any of Motorolas business practices. Also don't forget Google has become VZW's b*tch lately too so don't expect Google to stand up for you.
