What if I put a Tmobile 4g sim card into I9300? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm going to switch to Tmo monthly 4G plan...
I know I9300 has no 4G but I would like to know whether it will be working?
Is it gonna automatically change to H+ or HSPA+ (something like that) or recieve no signals at all?
Thanks a lot.

It will move to HSPA when you do so if selected in settings. Most operators allow 4g users to switch back to 3g or 2g networks. Internet speed will be according to 3g coverage. But you should confirm that by calling the customer service.

sorry but this is a very boring morning... xD

NOOOOO! DON'T DO IT THE WORLD WILL END!!!..
Nah just kidding your speed will drop down to H+ nothing more.

Are you talking T-Mobile USA or in Europe? If you mean T-Mobile USA, you will only get EDGE (2G) data service.

[Q] looking for android phone that works 3g/4g on att and tmobile

hELLO,
sorry if I post here I don't know if its the right section. I'm looking for a phone for a friend that can be use either with t-mobile and att in 3g or 4g.
I know that they use different frequencies but I was wondering if there is a phone that supports both frequencies for 3g and 4g speeds, or if there is a way to change the radio and make it work. Thank you so much..
To find a 4g phone is not that simple as I thought.

Well at&t nor Tmobile has a true 4g network at this time. They both use a 3.5g network that they advertise as 4g.

Galaxy s2 i9100 not running on 4g.

Hi, I have a white galaxy s2 i9100, but for some reason, when I put in my Tmobile sim card, it only runs on E network and not 4g. I contact Tmobile and they said there's nothing they can do about it since it's not a Tmobile phone. is there anything I can do to make my phone run on 4g? E network is very slow.

You're on T-Mobile? In the US? Then what you're seeing is normal. The GT-I9100 doesn't support one of the frequencies necessary for 4G on T-Mobile USA's network. (1700/2100) It will ONLY ever get Edge speeds.
It DOES support 4G (well, HSPA+, anyways) on AT&T's network, which runs on 850/1900.
See here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16875176292. Once you get to this page, click on the Details tab. Notice where it says "3G". (I know - 3G; but it uses the same frequencies for HSPA+) It says "AT&T 3G Only".
Sorry bud.

A lot of carriers wrongly named their network 4G for advertising reasons when it is in fact still only 3G.
The reason why it might be on EDGE is because it probably has a much stronger signal than 3G does so it will default to it. You can set the phone to use 3G only by going to settings -> wireless & networks -> mobile networks and then set network mode to WCDMA only.
Take note of the signal strength in settings -> about phone -> status.

No. This will NEVER work. Trust me. the I9100 does not and will not EVER receive one of the frequencies necessary for T-Mobile USA's HSPA+ (what they market as 4G) network. You will ALWAYS only be able to get Edge on T-Mobile when using this phone.

Sorry, I'm use to the 850/900/2100mhz 3G frequencies we use here, all of which this phone covers so there's never a problem using any network... Except Vodafone, they suck on all frequencies

I9100 (Orange) on Simple Mobile network?

Hi, everybody. Things happens so I left my US phone in Warsaw's taxi being there for Euro-2012 and bought Galaxy S2 I9100 from Orange. Came back to US and was trying to configure internet connection and had no luck getting 4G speeds. So far on the phone it just showing EDGE and low speeds. Is there any way to fix that issue? Was trying to search for this on the forums and Google, just found a couple of ideas that it doesn't work with 4G for some reason.
Any help would be appreciated!
Not sure if polish sgs2 have 4g (Lte) at all. If you want 3g you need to change APN settings for your providers default. You will find it in web.
Other possibility - you have no coverage of network .

If you're on T-mobile USA, you'll never get better than Edge speeds on their network with an i9100. The phone doesn't have the requisite antenna hardware to receive 1700 mhz for UMTS, which us one of the two required frequencies of the AWS band. (the other being 2100 mhz)

You're right, the i9100 does NOT have LTE. He's trying to get what passes for 4G (HSPA+) on one of our US carriers. I'm trying to determine if it's T-mobile USA or AT&T.
I totally missed the carrier name right in the thread title. Simple Mobile operates on the T-mobile USA network. So, I'm sorry to inform you, but you bought a phone that will never get 4G on your network. Sorry.
What about 3G? Or because of the antenna frequency difference not even that?

HTC One T-mobile prepaid, no 3G?

I recently got a T-MO version the One, and signed up for the $30 prepaid plan. First time on this. I never see a "3G" signal icon on top, it's either 4G or 2G. Does the prepaid plan not offer 3G service??
I was under the impressive that the 1900MHz refarmed areas have 3G. I'm in the Seattle area and saw on the map that there's plenty of coverage around for it, but as I said above, I have never seen "3G" on my phone.
Can anyone clear up my confusion? Thanks!
T-Mobile calls their HSPA+ service 4G. People in other parts of the world see a 3G or H or H+ icon when they have what T-Mobile calls 4G. So that's how it's supposed to work. It's not like you see 3G over PCS and 4G over AWS; they're the same thing and both show up as 4G on the stock T-Mobile ROM.

So in layman's term? Cause today I noticed today that my phone had 4G and then 2G.

Think he's just saying that you won't see it called "3G" on the phone, because they market it as 4G.
My next question would be then, is there a difference in what you get with the 1700 and 1900MHz bands. Or are they the same 4G signal on different freqs?

That's a good simple explanation, thanks. It's all about the marketing. I usually refer to t-mo/att 4G HSPA+ as "faux-G" as a joke.
There's no theoretical difference between different frequencies. Practically speaking, there could be differences in congestion or coverage, but those are harder to evaluate obviously. Assuming a strong signal on either band, I'd expect them to perform more or less equivalently.

The refarmed 1900 band is limited to 21 Gb download. The HSPA+ on 1700 / 2100 allows 42 Gb download.

With the prepaid plan, do you get access to both? I'm hoping that because it's a cheap plan, you don't get only the slower signal.
they dont do like AT&T does, you get access to LTE too, trust me i have to test the sites we get on air.

[Q] Why is there no 3G on stock T-mobile ROMS?

I've had this issues since I got my S5. TMO only gives me 4Glte and 4G, 2G. No 3G.. I only get 3G on custom ROMS like BlissPop 5.0. Any resolutions?

Not when I only get 1 bar of it and full 3G bars from what i've experience on custom ROMS.
I dont think there is even icon for 3G in factory tmobile room. 3G and 4G pretty much fell under 4G. If you want to limit yourself to 3G only you may have to research some other forums with 3G tmobile phones and find older apn setting. They should work with S5 just with limited bands. I remember from my Note 2 days that for a while older apn (4G) worked much faster than newer fast.tmobile lte apn.

Tmobile does have 3g. What happens is during inactivity the connection falls back to 3g to save battery, and transfer very small amounts of data. When demand calls the connection than hops over to Hspa. Tmobile does this transparently to the end user on most devices. This is what they call there 4g network.
If you use international roms, you'll see the indicator change between 3g and H all the time. Same with the nexus line of phones.
