How do YOU use Titanium Backup? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It seems as if every time I flash a new ROM and try restoring my applications, data, and settings, something ALWAYS goes wrong or doesn't restore correctly.
What is the right way to use TiBu and/or how do YOU use it from backup to satisfied restore?

I only backup user apps and data, and all is fine time after time. Whenever I experience unexpected behavior is when I do that with system apps and data.

Yeah. Like he said... I'm always afraid to try new ROMs because I'm afraid I'll end up screwed. People here tlak about baouncing back and forth like it's no big deal, but when I've tried it I seem to end up having to start from scratch.

1. Yes swype works but you have to delete your current version of swype and install the new swype beta...do this from swype's website, sorry don't have the link handy, but it is an improvement from the previous version that comes with our phone
2.you can restore apps with TiBu but do not restore system apps, and when you do a batch restore, make sure you select apps only not data...not doing that well get you fc.city!
3.I just downloaded all three and start with hl and work my way down to ll...not sure of a way to see the kernel leakage, all I can ever find is the version name, never if its hl,ml,or ll?? So I start with high and work down so its easy for me to remember

I restored "missing apps + data" but it still didn't restore everything. I had to go through manually and restore the apps I was missing. I don't even know if I restored them all now.
But anywho I tried installing my transparent themed google search bar but it just FC'd on me. So i tried reflashing gapps but now I can't re-install it. From the market it force closes too.

From all of your force close issues it sounds like you missed wiping something when you made the switch to cm7...honestly I would take the time now and odin back to stock and reinstall it shouldn't take more then 15 mins or so since you already should have all the files you need.

Thats why I think you should re flash...I've never had to install google search it's just there when I flash the rom, I always flash the gapps.zip after the rom and never actually checked to see if it was on my phone prior to flashing the gapps...did you do that?? If you did I'd try flashing the gapps.zip again

Well I reinstalled it but it looks to have messed up my back ups in titanium. Look. I'm missing apps too!

Why would it say I have no back ups? ? I have no idea what apps I've lost now.

I batch restored. Once google apps was done installing everything market started restoring a bunch of apps (not all). After that was done I went to titanium and installed
Missing apps + data.
One key difference is that I ticked the option in settings for support for moving data between incompatible roms.
I was having some issues though. Turns out when I upgraded from the old to recent version of glitch kernel I unknowingly put low leak over high leak and with out the removal script. It was almost perfect except every now and then a program would crash.
I wiped data, dalvik and cache. Reinstalled the rom. Let it boot. Installed glitch. Let it boot. Installed google apps and went from there. haven't under volted but that's more about which version of the kernel I have and the battery and speed are so goods already, I'm not worried about it.
I also went through my app list and manually restored data for previously installed apps that I needed. Also eliminates problems with data you don't even need. Then sms restore to restore sms and call log.
The in call sound is still a little quiet though. Luckily my friends, colleagues and I don't use voice calls.
Only a 4 chan app force closes now but it's crappy so that's not surprising.
I hope that helps someone.

I'm getting constant force closes now. Just randomly out of the blue. Sad day . Also reboot locks up my phone and I have to pull the battery

I had that. Reboot into recovery. Sounds like you need to do that through adb now. Wipe cache and dalvik. Fix permissions and reboot. Worked for me when that happened. I almost thought I couldn't reboot but I was patient and eventually thw fc tapered off to just google framework and I was able to get the power menu.

Yeah I did that. But now it's back again. It seemed to have only momentarily fixed it. I wiped again and more force closes. I'm beginning to think it has something to do with titanium backup!

I've been on fence about trying CM7. I run it on my Nook Color and like alot. But I depend on my phone for work and I'm worried about all issues I read people are having, particularly call volume. I can't afford to annoy a client with phone issues in this economy!
What is consensus - is this a dependable daily driver?

UnNamed to CM7 (just want to make sure I'm good to go)

I'm just getting the hang of flashing ROMs and want to try CM7.
I'm on UnNamed now so I'm assuming all I have to do is:
1. go into CWM and complete a backup (done today)
2. go into CWM and do a wipe/factory reset
3. flash the CM7 and google apps from CWM
4. restore from the backup to get all my apps/settings back
Thanks for the support.
Of you do APPS AND DATA only without touching thru system data then yes.

Not sure what you mean by "apps and data" only. I just clicked backup in CWM and figured this back up everything. Are the steps I listed above incorrect?
When you select 'backup' in CWM it creates an entire copy of your system- your ROM, kernel,
Modem, and your Apps and settings. You got the right idea of how to go from ROM to ROM but if you hit restore in recovery you'll just end up flashing back to CM7. nyamoV2 was referring to titanium backup which is used for backing up Apps and settings. I don't use it but from what I gather you never want to restore system data with it. But can be used to back up Apps. Although upon signing into Google market your Apps start downloading again anyway. Its good to make backups in recovery in case something goes wrong flashing a new ROM or theme or whatever.
Accidentally hit 'thanks' trying to modify my post LOL oops

God I keep hitting the wrong button
Anyway, that's odd. I'm usually running CM7 as my daily driver and never had any data speed issues. Some users have changed their APN's and that seems to help. I did at one point but reverted back. Oh well

I always do a backup with nandroid if I'm looking to save the rom I'm currently running. Then after that I do a wipe/factory reset then also a format /system. Then install the new rom. Always has worked perfectly.
CM7
is this rom better then unnamed of MiUI?

What's the best way to restore system settings after flashing new ROM?

I am running Foxhound 1.1 right now. I am already using Titanium Backup to restore all the user app data when flashing to a newer version of Foxhound. However I still lose certain system settings such as power savings and setting all notifications to vibrate and other miscellaneous stuff under the settings menu. My biggest gripe is having to manually move selected apps back to the home screen. Is there anyway to restore these settings quickly after updating to a new ROM?
I have heard that it's not advisable to restore system data using Titanium Backup so I've only stuck to restoring user app data for now. I also keep my phone backed up to and restore from my Google account so contacts and other stuff are ported over fine. I'd just really like a way to keep all my system settings and not have to manually tweak everything again. Thanks!

No I am using Apex! Really? Let me go check that out.. Thanks for the tip. I hadn't seen that option yet.. Whoops.
Ok I backed up my Apex settings and Desktop to the SD card! :fingers-crossed: How about keeping system settings? It would be nice if I didn't have to manually turn off haptic feedback and the other stuff every time.

Ah that's alright then. The most pressing issue was to restore the placement of homescreen icons. Thanks for the tip man.
Either use titanium for your apps and then alter the layout to your liking or, perform an advanced back up of data from Cwm, do a full wipe, then cache and dalvic. Flash the rom. Allow it to boot then, go back to recovery and advanced restore data. Should work fine although the cleanest way is to do a full wipe and allow the apps to restore themselves, you'll lose application data that way though.

Back up properly

Little ashamed to admit it hut I have never actually backed up any phone I have owned. Atrix, vivid, s2 but I want to do right by this phone and downloaded titu. And online nandroid. From this point on I am a little lost as to how to back up my files. I am rooted but still haven't unlocked the bootloader the reason is I want to install the camera mod and have a backup incase anything goes wrong. When I downloaded online nandroid I could not get it to update and would not let me back up my phone do I need to be unlocked as well? Also is this any different from using titanium backup and or which one is better than the other

Well I got nandroid to update seems I didn't let busybox Install completely but still is this a better back up than Titu provides?

Nandroid backs up your current ROM configuration. So, however you have it set up, all apps, settings, etc, it remembers and will restore you to that same "image". TiBu is more for backing up and restoring apps, en masse. It also allows you to restore text messages, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings and a few other things. It gives you the ability to uninstall system apps with root or freeze them if you choose which its often safer until you figure out whether or not remove a system app will negatively affect stability. Hope this helps.

Application Manager crashing everytime.

Hey folks.
My "Application Manager" keeps crashing everytime I open it. No error message, simply closes by itselft after about 5 seconds.
I can't tell what is causing this. I already wiped cache and dalvik, disabled some apps and cleared some space in internal memory. But nothing works.
I've flashed a new kernel (Speedmod) some days ago, but I'm almost sure that I've used application manager after that.
I've been playing with Clean Master and SD Maid, maybe this problem is related to these apps? I don't know.
I would appreciate some help and tips...

Must have another way...
You've obviously installed something recently or the data of something has changed and caused an incompatibility that's causing this.
If you're sure it worked after the kernel, there's not much you can do without a full wipe
Or restore the nandroid you took before flashing the kernel
Sent from my GT-I9300 using Tapatalk 2
I'm afraid I'll disable each recent installed app until I find the culprit.
Just thinking about a full wipe and I'm already tired. Hehe

I got a recent nandroid backup here. There is an option in TB to restore apps from a nandroid backup. I was thinking about restore "Settings" system app. Is that safe to do? The Application Manager is related to settings app, right? I cannot find an app with that name.
Yes it will be the settings app, but its likely its not the settings app causing the problem.
My sound menu used to do the same thing. I did a wipe and restored everything in titanium one by one to find out what caused it. Guess what it was?
That's right "wallpaper settings"...
See what I mean?
