It's not phone dependent ... Your pc should be properly setup for this .. You can google this query and you can find good tutorials.

What's your Operating System? If it's Linux, I can help u! But I am assuming, it's Windows! Try Googling 'Connect Android phone to Ad Hoc network'!

ad hoc actually possible
All i done was first turn off wifi and then open wpa_
supplicant.conf in data/misc/wifi and placed
network={
ssid="Dilushan"
mode=1
frequency=2412
key_mgmt=NONE
priority=50
}
in end. Dilushan should replace with wifi network name. Then got ownership back to system.wifi by typing the following 2 commands in Terminal Emulator.
su
then
chown system.wifi data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
thats all. Then i opened wifi in setting and it
automatically connected adhock network named
Dilushan. I
connected successfully to nokia phone wifi
network created by joikuspot and browsed internet
and also connected to a windows laptop. my
device xperia mini 4.0.4 .431 rooted locked
bootloader.

Very good
Thank pro a lot. I connected successfully !:good::good::good::good:

Thank you for the method !
Tether Wifi works fine.
But I'm obliged to return the code ("/data/data/android.tether/bin/start tether 1) every time I restart my Tattoo.
It's normal?
Thank you for your help.
Sorry for my bad English, I'm french =p .
Sorry for noob question.
What is wifi tether?
Google is your friend ! =P
Wifi Tether allows use your phone as a router (modem).
Wifi Tether uses the 3G connection, and translates into wifi signal.
I don't know if it's clear, but I'm not very good in English and some words escaped me.
it's clear... i dont need this for now, but is very usable. thx.
I followed the steps but still cannot use tethering
My PC can connect to the Tattoo and get the IP from it, and that app alerted to be connected by a client, but the PC still cannot browse webpage

Same here, I tried connecting through a netbook and a iPod Touch, both of them see and connect to the phone, but are unable to use internet.
Same problem
I am using Modaco R2. for HTC tattoo.
I installed wireless_tether_2_0-pre10.apk.
My laptop able to connect to Tattoo & give Ip address.
I tried to browse webpage... but it unable to go into internet.
BUT both, Tattoo & laptop showed that they are connected together!!!
Tattoo's access control even show my laptop's name correctly!
Using laptop command prompt, I tried to ping Default Gateway (192.169.2.100)
It showed 100% data LOST!!!.
What happen???
Download the latest apk (2.0.1), it works.
Hi Guys,
I have an HTC Tattoo and want to do wifi Tethering. My phone is not rooted yet and i cannot find instructions to do this (most of the instructions are for adding new roms). I do not want to add a new rom, i just want to tether my 3G connection by turning my phone into a wifi hub.

sharing laptop internet with x10

hi all
straight to the point
is there anyway that i can share my PC or laptop internet connection with my x10??
i dont wanna use my x10 internet since its very limited
thnx
You haven't told us much about how your PC/laptop connects to the Internet...
Via wireless? - > Connect the x10 to your wireless network
Via ethernet - > You might be stuffed
Via USB 3G dongle-thing -> Possible to connect a wi-fi access point to an ethernet port (with ICS enabled) and connect to that... or perhaps get another USB device designed to share that connection... I know they exist, there used to be something like that so Nintendo DS could share a connection from a PC.
But it's not really clear unless you tell us how your PC/laptop connect to the Internet.
I'd be careful too as I am on my wi-fi network but it frequently drops back to 3G. I'm on unlimited data (O2 UK) so it's not really a problem for me, but if I wasn't aI'd be caning that data usage...
the PC uses a DSL internet line , the laptop too
i dont have wireless internet
my DSL is through the phone line , and i have a DSL modem
my modem conncted to the pc , through usb port
and the phone line is connected to that DSL modem
i dont have any wireless router and ethernet router
i heard about thethering .. but i understand its to use the phone internet connection on the laptop or pc ,
but i wanna do the exact opposite , use my PC's connection on my x10i
thanks
Create a adhoc wireless connection on your laptop preferebly without any security then connect your x10 with the same connection
You will have to do the settings manually
Hope this helps.

our x10 doesn't have the capability to connect to an ad-hoc connection, at least i haven't been able to detect any. i was able to set up wifi tether on my friends phone, and the x10 was unable to detect it. Same problem when i set up my laptop for an ad-hoc connection, cannot be detected by the x10
has ur pc / notebook got wifi?
if so, u may try this:

Its true. I tried Xperia X10 with ad hoc network and it is not discovering the network. I am now unable to have wifi network for my xperia. I have belkin wifi usb adapter but I came to know that it is not compatible with connectify. My old wifi router is dead, I m struck with edge speed on my xperia.
Is there any way to use connectify with belkin wifi usb adapter? Or are there any other software that supports belkin to make wifi hotspot.

i cant upload it,because you should edit this file Considering your ad-hoc connection name and it needs some setting to be activated!!!
i try to translate it if i can!!
here you are:
!) well at first you need to create an ad-hoc(any name you can use for it, my ad-hoc name is xperia)
2) then sharing your internet on it!!
3) trun on your x10s wifi.
4) create a network on your x10 with the same name!!!(add Wi-Fi network)
5) turn off x10s wifi
6) go to data/misc/wif/
after you open wpa_supplicant.conf
you should see this text:
ctrl_interface=DIR=/data/system/
wpa_supplicant GROUP=system
update_config=1
network={
ssid="xperia"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=NONE
}
change it like this:
ctrl_interface=DIR=/data/system/
wpa_supplicant GROUP=system
update_config=1
ap_scan=2
network={
ssid="xperia"
scan_ssid=1
key_mgmt=NONE
mode=1
}
dont forget the backup!!
and-roid.ir
i tried it , it didnt work , it just messed up my wifi on the x10
and i couldnt scan or use the wifi on my phone ..
so i had to put back the back up file
but i found something else
there is a small software which u can install on ur laptop or pc
called BZEEK
which will work , and will share the PC's wifi

I tried with few, din't work

first, you should turn your wifi on and add Wi-Fi network (setting,wireless&networks,Wi-Fi settings, add Wi-Fi network

I tried your guide out, after a few restarts I got access to my phone's wifi with my laptop, just no internet access and the phone kept on searching for the IP untill it turned off the wifi.
Do you have any clue as to why?
I have tethering working on my mini pro. All I did was root, and installed Barnacle Tethering.
There was no setup necessary, just opened the app and pressed start and it showed up in the wireless list for my laptop.

wi-fi ad-hock solution

I managed to solve the "wi-fi not showing ad hock networks issue" on ace os 2.2.1.
here are step by step:
1. phone must be rooted
2. use File expert app (i had problems with root explorer mounting rw)
3. assign read write permissions to /system folder (it's under options-more-mount in file expert)
4. copy wpa_supplicant (hacked version 231kb size) to /system/bin folder. it attached
5. restart phone
now the Ace will show ad-hock networks including one generated by laptops.
all you have to do is to set laptop hotspot using conectify or windows wi-fi.
you can google that.
credit goes to blackplatypus http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=754961
At what problem do you refer? What is this issue?
If u use connectify then what is the point of using wpa supplicant..connectify already turns your laptop into a wifi hotspot detectable by android I think

wheres the file bro?

ad hoc networks are not detected by default when you scan wifi networks. This seeks to enable the device to see ad hoc networks.
I haven't tried this one yet, so can't tell if its working or not.
Edit: No links to files was posted. XD
file is in my first post.
thanks gonna try it now..^^
btw..is it rw-r-r?
or just rw-----?
btw..i had seen at my system/bin that the default wpa_supplicant has permission of rwxr-xr-x..
so do i have to set that hacked wpa_supplicant by that permission?
gonna try it after you answer..downloading connectify..hehe

it's of no importance. you need to set system od bin directory to be rw to swap files. it's read only by default.
i have managed to connect to my laptop only to open network (no encryption) using CONECTIFY, if it's protected by wep it won't obtain ip address. looking for solution. any help would be appreciated.

[Q] Ad-hoc wifi support on XPERIA MiNi Pro [Ice Cream Sandwich]

Hi,
Few days back i updated my MiNi Pro to Ice Cream Sandwich and rooted it..
same as Gingerbread, Ice cream sandwich doesn't have Ad-hoc wifi support..
It can only connect to an infrastructure wifi only..
I want to connect my Mini Pro to the ad-hoc virtual hotspot created by my laptop, or Nokia N79 [Using JoikuSpot – Mobile WiFi HotSpot for Nokia] so that i can get internet access on my Mini Pro using wifi ..
Thanx.

The native Adhoc in the ICS is not workin, i use WiFi Tether for Root Users: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.googlecode.android.wifi.tether
Opend the App, in Setting choose the perfil "ICS WLAN1"
Connect to adhoc
I changed data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf (not /system/bin/wpa_supplicant)
Step1:First i scanned my adhoc network using Wifi Manager. It shows adhoc networks. I ignored it's warning and tried to connect. It'll fail.No problem! We now have the adhoc network listed in wpa_supplicant.conf.
Note: you can skip this step if you know how to edit wpa_supplicant.conf manually or if your device already lists adhoc networks on scanning.
Step2: You'll need to root your device if you're doing this through your device itself. If you use adb you may not need to root your device.(I had root access by default through adb. So rooting the device wasn't necessary for me). If you're using pc(windows or linux), i recommend Android Commander. If you're doing this from device itself, use some Root Explorer and Terminal Emulator.
Pull and/or edit data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf. Add the following line
ap_scan=2
Find line like
network={
ssid="your adhoc name"
bssid=*some value*
.
.
}
Delete bssid line.
Add/Change the following
scan_ssid=1
priority=1
mode=1
Push back/save the modified file.
chown ownership back to system.wifi. Type the following in adb/Terminal Emulator
#chown system.wifi data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
Ok, done! Now you can turn on wifi and if the specified adhoc network is nearby, your device'll automatically connect to it. Don't scan for new networks. If you do, adhoc support will be lost and you'll have to start over again!
Advantage: Safer than modifying system/etc/wifi/wpa_supplicant binary. Saves you the trouble of compiling modified wpa_supplicant or finding a compiled one for your platform.
Drawback: This is just a temporary solution.You'll have to repeat this process for every new adhoc network as it doesn't enable adhoc forever. It is good for connecting to your home network or other known networks, but if you want to connect to any adhoc network you scan,then this is not your method. Because, wpa_supplicant.conf will be overwritten every time you scan a new network.

Do chown on wpa_supplicant.conf
You have error because you didn't change ownership back to System and group as wifi. To do this do the chown command from adb or a Terminal Emulator/shell:
chown system.wifi /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
Please refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1591207.

All i done was first turn off wifi and then open wpa_supplicant.conf in data/misc/wifi and placed
network={
ssid="Dilushan"
mode=1
frequency=2412
key_mgmt=NONE
priority=50
}
in end. Dilushan should replace with wifi network name. Then got ownership back to system.wifi by typing the following 2 commands in Terminal Emulator.
su
then
chown system.wifi data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf
thats all. Then i opened wifi in setting and it automatically connected adhock network named Dilushan. I connected successfully to nokia phone wifi network created by joikuspot and browsed internet and also connected to a windows laptop. my device xperia mini 4.0.4 .431 rooted locked bootloader.
Thanks Hexcube this is awsome. i even started a thread with no answer before.
