Need help updating/flashing new ROM - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My buddy rooted my phone last year and flashed cyanogenmod 7.1.1. My bluetooth piece will not connect to my phone and I'm thinking I need to flash a new rom.
I have no idea how to do this. I tried to read up on stuff like adb and sdk.
I could really use some serious guidance on how to update my rom.
I'm running Android 2.3.7 with Cyanogenmod 7.1.1.
Can I install any type of mod, now? Like Sense?
I hope I am posting this in the proper place.
Thank you

This needs to be moved to q and a. Anyhow, you can now flash other roms. There is a guide posted somewhere im sure. Just google thunderbolt Rom flashing guide or something like that.

How do I move this to Q and A?
And I can run any other type of ROM? Would I have to re-download rom manager and all that? I've been reading up on titanium backup. So I really just download the file to my SD card then delete data/dalvik then reboot to recovery and install new rom there? There redownload titanium and do a restore?

Thank you much. I will read, then re-read this, then ask any questions I may have.
Have a great Monday!

What I really need is the ability to use my blue tooth headsest. Do I have to flash a whole new ROM for this? Or should I flash a radio?
I've been reading up on flashing a new rom but am still confused. Do I need to flash the rom THEN flash an RUU (radio?). How about kernels?
I'm worried that I would have issues with the small things...like clearing/formatting my data/dalvik.

Also, how do I add my Radio/RUU to the "Root" of my SD card?
And can anyone clarify how to verify M5sum? I have a program downloaded for it, but don't know how to use it.

First off radios and ruus are two different things. The radio does need to be on the root of the sd card to be flashed. It doesn't really matter if you flash the radio before or after because that won't change between flashes. I find the best way to do it is just download the radio using the phone. Browse with a root file explorer like es file explorer to the download folder, rename the file to PG05IMG.zip, copy, paste it one folder back (that's the root directory). After you flash it in the bootloader browse to the file and rename it.

Thank you for the reply. I'll download a root file explorer. How should I download a radio on my phone?
Do you think the radio is the issue with my bluetooth not working?
Thanks again.

Will this method work if you get a different device? Say downgrading from a Vibrant to a MT4G?

From rommanager flash clock work recovery then boot into recovery and find the zip and flash
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Yes rename the zip file to update.zip but that should have already been done when you rooted your phone.
^ no. you never rename a rom.
Flash cwr
Reboot into cwr
Install zip from sd
Check out the noob guide (signature) for much more detail and steps.
You can do it from rom manager, but cwr still needs to be flashed.

(Q) Unable to flash any radio.

Have an HTC Thunderbolt that I am trying to get up and running but I am unable to pick up any signal. No 3g, 4g or anything. I have tried to flash different radios (via bootloader) but the phone doesn't recognize the file( with the correct name). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I am rooted. At the moment I am running ThunderStick GENII v2.2.0. The file name I am trying to flash is PG05IMG.zip. Originally it was (MR2)PG05IMG. Trying to flash it via the bootloader by placing it on my sd card.
Are you sure it didn't get named .zip.zip? If you d/l it from a windows computer that is set to not show file extensions and then rename PG05IMG.zip it ends up as .zip.zip. Also be sure you didn't get a space in there before the .

If it was literally named (MR2)PG05IMG without the word zip after it, then you have file extensions hidden, which means you ended up actually renaming it to PG05IMG.zip.zip, because the first .zip was already there. If you dont know how to unhide file extensions, then just rename it to PG05IMG without .zip and see if bootloader takes it.
This is why I don't explain flashing radios involving ADB, downloads to a computer, or renaming things anywhere except on the device using a file manager of some sort in my q AND a thread. These files aren't huge. They EASILY download inside half a minute, then you move them, rename them, and flash away. No confusion with file names.

ROM question.....

I am rooted running cwm and the stock rom. My question is... I have 2.1 ics cleanrom downloaded onto my sd card (not installed yet). Is their a way to save the ROM I am running right now onto my computer so if I dont like ics or have trouble with it, I can revert back. I would like to be able to just copy it off my phone onto my comp to save it (so I dont have to download it because I have Satellite internet and it would take me until the year 2020 to get a rom downloaded because hughes net is so slow.
Thanks in advance
USB cable, create a folder on your computer, copy and paste. Can do this with any folder or file on your phone that your computer can see. Or you can upload and store it on drop box.

Perform a nandroid before you flash. You should do that anyway, but that way you can just restore the nandroid if you don't like it. That will bring you back to how you had everything right before you flashed the new rom. You just need to make sure you flash the boot.img or kernel from the nandroid again to get everything to work.
wasabi, I am doing a nandroid right now. So if I dont like the ics I will just have to do a nandroid recovery.
Where can I find the boot.img and what kernel would need to be reflashed?
I would also recommend doing a backup right after you flash and get everything the way you want. That way if you mess up something you have a backup exactly the way you want it

Well, the boot.img is the kernel. So you need to find the ROM that you are using (and making a nandroid for right now) and extract the boot.img from that ROMs zip. Essentially, download that ROM again (if it's not on your computer) unzip the .zip file or copy and paste the boot.img out of it. You can then put it on your SD card and use Scrosler's Clean Flash tool to flash that boot.img. That tool is in the android development section. That should get you where you need to go.
Ok, I have this zip on my laptop "z471-VIGOR-GB-CK3-CFS-122911-2139" and "flashmeinrecovery". The z471 file has a "kernel" and boot file in there, is that the one I want?

That's ziggy's kernel. You don't want that yet. What ROM are you coming from?
EDIT: I have to run, but you want the boot.img that is in the ROM you are using right now, not that one. If you go back to that ROM, you can then flash ziggy's kernel after you have the ROM's kernel on your phone. What I would do is find the ROM that you are using, pull that boot.img and use it. If you are using the stock ROM, there are stock kernels posted in the android dev section so you can use those. Hope this helps, cuz I need to run. Someone else should be able to get you the rest of the way if you get stuck.

what is deodexed roms

Ive seen other posts about this but what is it. I want to install google now on my stock ics ota. But other sites say i need a deodexed rom.
There is a file included in every apk on a stock rom that is an odex (I don't know what this does but I think it is a database or a cache). It makes modding or theming difficult so developers take it out.

I am not sure how to flash a radio. i have to flash a radio before i flash a deodexed rom. How do i do this
Download the radio. Put it on the root of your SD (/sdcard). CHECK THE MD5 SUM BEFORE FLASHING. Rename the file exactly like this PG05IMG.zip. Reboot into the bootloader. Press the power button to select fastboot. Press volume up to apply the update. Once it finishes reboot. After the reboot make sure to rename the radio zip or move it somewhere else. I usually rename them. Also it is extremely important that the md5 matches. If it does not then do no flash the file as it will brick your device.

This is a great instruction. The only thing I might add is that the file name contains a zero, not a letter O. And reinforcing the point disconnecktie makes, it is important to rename or delete the zip file after you reboot... if you don't it may cause the phone to brick if you try to flash another radio.
One other note, you can also delete and download radios using a microSD card reader attached to your PC. A cheap bit of insurance to have around, just in case.

Once i flash it, i reboot and let it boot to the os and then remove the PG05IMG?
Or after the flash, turn it off and then delete the PG05IMG and then reboot?
And btw, thanks for all your help.
Reboot and then delete the file.

[Tutorial] How to mod files for Safestrap Alpha

I was just gonna make this little tutorial to take some work off of The actual Dev for the Project(Beastmode) thanks again for your work brother
In his newest alpha release of safe strap we're able to replace the stock rom slot with a 4.3 Touchwiz ROM, I have seen people report that they have flashed certain roms without having to do any modification, but this is a safety precaution.
First you will need your rom of choice, in this tutorial I'm using N3BULA.
Download the rom and extract the contents to a folder on your pc or phone, PC is much easier, but you can edit on your phone as well
The files you need to edit are under META-INF/COM/GOOGLE/ANDROID that's actually the only files
Im using his modified files from the dev thread for comparison.
First we'll open the Aroma-Config
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2650078&stc=1&d=1395786107
Pardon the crude screen shot method but this will show you the changes and where they are.
Modified is on the left and Stock that came with the rom is on the right. Make the Changes and save
Next is Updater-Script
Same crude method of screen shot
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2650086&stc=1&d=1395786357
you can see where the two differ, so just edit that out as well.
Left is modified, Right is stock
Save Changes
Edit 3/26 you can also delete boot.img in zip
Make sure these files are on external sd card as well as the rom, boot into recovery, always make a nandroid backup, wipe and flash.\
This is the first time I have made a tutorial, so if its rough around the edges please excuse my forum newbness
if I missed anything definitely feel free to add, and once again A HUGE THANK YOU BEASTMODE.
Hopefully in a few hours or days these edits wont be needed.
how do we go about putting them into the rom zip file?
You edit them in the rom zip file... extract the rom and it moves as a zip, my case was it downloaded to storage sdcard (internal). I extracted it to ext sdcard and then went in and edited it. It still remains a zip
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk
Easy way is to use 7 zip. Extract the ROM and make the changes. Now right click on original ROM and select open archive. From there u can place the modded files. Now the ROM.zip is still flashable.

of course as soon as i posted it, i figured it out, unfortunately i can't get alliance to work afterwards, it installs but doesn't boot
I'm using alliance atm on safestrap. Don't mod anything. Just choose the stock kernel when you get to that point in the installer.
So glad to see you post that.!!! Been talking to a guy about it for about 2 hrs about it now, I actually told him it should work as long as agni wasn't chosen, thanks for clarification

I don't get it I edited the zips and then when i try to flash in recovery it just says failed? it doesn't give me a specific reason. This is for n3bula rom. But i extracted using winrar, deleted boot.img, changed the aroma config and updated zip using wordpad, zipped the rom and it doesn't seem to work. is there something i'm doing wrong?

After you deleted the boot.img there is no point in editing the rest. I used 7zip to unzip and rezip and have not had any problems yet. Winrar might be causing problems for all i know as i never use it. I'm not around my pc for the most part atm but i haven't had any problems flashing 4 or 5 roms with just deleting the boot.img.

I ended up fixing it. I tried doing it through winrar and from root explorer on my phone. The way I got it to work was actually downloading the aroma-config file and uodater-script file from the development thread that beast mode provided and changed those. He happened to use nebula as well so everything is working great

Sorry for the dumb question but what do I do if the rom of choice isn't showing up on the root of my extSD?
EDIT:
Nevermind, to anyone who saw my last post(s), I'm an idiot .
Ran through Odin, re-rooted, re-installed Safestrap, now installing N3bula Rom.
Hope all goes well. And sorry for any inconvenience!
Hope my donation helped out some Beastmode!
