So I read today that TomTom is finally available for "some Android devices". Bizzarrely (and somewhat predictably), it's not available for the highest-profile Android phone on the market (the S3). Why is it that this often seems to happen with new apps - i.e. the S3 (and previously S2) are rarely amongst the first devices to be supported? Are the underlying reasons usually technical, marketing-related, ...??
It might not be the answer you want, but TomTom is quite over-rated.
The google Maps + Navigation combo has become a very mature product and beats every single similar app I have tested.
Except for the curiosity factor, TomTom offers nothing over what we already have.
It's the lack of off-line routing (and re-routing) that detracts from Google Maps/Nav - especially when you're paying very expensive data roaming charges....
I don't see any TomTom app on market. Can you elaborate

I always though TOMTOM was the best, in the UK anyway. Google navigation is fine, but it is a real pain when you have no reception (driving round in a forest for 30 minutes). I thought I would buy it on another device and see what happens when I copy it over using Titanium backup. Trouble is I don't seem to have any compatible devices.
Maybe you should try Sygic: GPS Navigation
It supports offline maps too, and works best for me in my country,
And some excerpts from news online
"For its part, TomTom hasn't said why its application doesn't support devices with higher resolutions, but it did reassure users that it's "committed to supporting higher resolutions on an ongoing basis." It's not clear when that will happen, though."
Yeah Sygic is pretty dang good. It even used TomTom maps and traffic data.

Yep. Backing up via Titanium Backup and copying the .apk over, etc is a way of sideloading.

Yes! Exactly the same here, I don't understand why they don't release it for the S3 it seems to work perfectly.
Can this be done if not rooted?

Sorry to ask again, but nobody answered and im not sure of the answer.
Does anybody know if I can do this sideloading thing if my phone is not rooted please?
The store says I can install it on my orange san francisco, could I get it from that onto my S3?
Thanks
not an issue now google maps has work off line mode enabling you to download maps and routes before you set off

Is anybody able to help/advise please?
TomTom South Africa works well...no problems...love the fact that the street names are actually read out
But it doesn't want to update...always fails to connect to TomTom servers...

Co-Pilot ?...
Not sure when/if TomTom is coming, but Co-Pilot seems OK so far, and it's pretty cheap for UK and Ireland.
i doubt tomtom would come to android as they are developing for iphone and im not 100% sure but that might be exclusive at least for the time being.
I use copilot, and not troubles what so ever. only £22 bargain if you ask me and so easy to use.
I'm a big fan of copilot on my Magic - and I'm hoping I'll be OK to transfer it to the hero tomorrow when it arrives - It actually costs 25.99 because the market price (£22 somthing) doesn't have the VAT added.
I've heard of folk having glitches on hero as it supposedly clashes a bit with the sense UI. However the trick Ive read is to clear the defaults in the home app (I think through app manager) then when you press home button next it gives you the option to toggle off the Sense UI and allows progs like copilot to run ubersmoothly since the sense UI is not swalowing as much resources. You can toggle it back on after the journey I guess.
Daisy - +1 for CoPilot

TomTom develop software for their own platfrom, for Windows Mobile last and finally; iPhone. So I fail to see how they could have any exclusivity there.
Actually, I bet TomTom have been looking hard into Android as a possible platform for their own devices, especially after the new Garmin and Mio GPS phones.
Cant find copilot on android market.

Alternative choice for GPS navigation could be Nav4All.

Copilot is good - no camera database and limited voices but the navigation itself and working with this phone is really good. The lane guidance feature works really well and is a plus over tomtom. NO reservations after changing

Not so, with AndNav2 you create map tiles (which can be downloaded) and the program uses these. All you need a network connection is to calculate the inital route.

I saw this at the http://www.alk.com store. They're selling copilot Live 8 with maps for $19.99. limited time of course. I got my copy.
What do you think? I'm considering it since it's only $20. Not thrilled with amAze or nav4all, both free. I like google maps but it's not voice navigation.
I watched this review and it looks pretty good. Can't beat 20 bucks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h3sI0iu1OQk
Bought and used this weekend just for short trips around town. Handy and worked okay but not a replacement for my Garmin.
$20 seemed too cheap to pass up.
Used it this morning. Works great. Kiss AT&T telenav good bye!

lol damn, saw this too late... It's $24.99 now...
i jumped on this deal too. if you download the pc app for it they even offer a new map for free. the new map is outdated though. both maps do not have my neighborhood on them. my neighborhood is about 2 years old and just started showing on maps within the last year. ocn had it mapped last summer and it showed on both google and tomtom this summer. i'm pretty surprised that it's not on the new map.
I used to use co-pilot but gave up because I called them way too many times to reset my "keys". It was hard to explain to them that I flashed my "custom" rom like I changed underwears. The lady there would questioned me why I have so much problem. I guess they think I am installing it in various phones of mine. So I switched to IGO8 to get away from having to call them when I flash another custom rom.
I used to sent in logs of areas that I droved that are not in their maps...and they would update their maps.
As far as their GPS, it is pretty good.

Hi SL...I also have it..do not need to call....all you need to do is to de-activate CoPilot before you flash and the re-activate when done. I hope this helps anyone.
Thanks for the tip! I bought it & installed, but wondered if there would be issues next time I decided to flash...
now with deactivate button
I went for the deal. So far I like it, but haven't used it enough to make an informed judgement. (as well as its my first tbt nav app). I did want to say to SL thatCopilot Live 8 has a deactivate button in the app now so there is no need to call support if you load a new ROM .....as long as you remember to deactivate it first.
I bought it over the 'sale' weekend, and have flashed twice since then without de-activating it. I don't use the 2577 folder install method, I use Sashimi to copy the entire \Program Files\CoPilot directory structure from a backup location. The first time I run it it needs to re-activate, but it only takes a couple seconds.
Can anyone confirm the necessity of de-activating before flashing?
I did it also.
So far soo good ! .
I used to have the old IPAQ Nav program moved over from my old IPaq 6515 to my previous HTC diamond. It worked well , but the graphic was basic.
Since to weeks I have the Samsung Omnia 2 (Bell Canada)and the new CoPilot seems to run very nice (at least graphic wise) and I find it preety easy to use.
Anyway for 20 bucks was a great value !
Works much better then Google maps. The Copilot maps don't have my Street either, my development is about 2 years old. Very good user interface.
Ironically enough , close to my house they made a link between two streets a year ago , and I see it on Copilot , but not on Google maps on-line !
Go figure..

These phones don't seriously have an internal GPS antenna; do they? If I turn my data signal off I get no GPS.
How does the GPS work exactly in these phones? I mean with data on I guess it somehow uses tower triangulation to find the phone...but how does it work with the data network dis-activated? I'm confused.
The phone has full gps chip and aerials, with the data connection off agps won't work so well, and google maps won't work, but anything that stores there maps locally will work.
GPS fix will take longer without agps

So without data it will still get a lock? You're saying that the phone DOES have a GPS antenna inside?
I've tried it before and it just seems like it searches for satellites forever and never gets a lock.

So why does it take so long to get a lock compared to lets say a regular GPS unit that you put in your car? Is it because the antenna is smaller?

It should take the same amount of time in most cases. But sometimes the circumstances are different. A typical fix time i 5-30seconds for my SGS2, but sometimes it is slower.
And if your chip for some reason needs a complete configuration from the satellites it could take up to 10-15 minutes to get a fix (exceptional situation).

With data off and corrupt calendar data in the GPS chip it takes even more than 5 minutes.
Wait 15 minutes instead. This time is required due to the extremely low bit rate from gps satellites (50 bits/s).
Another idea is to download gps test from market and clear and update agps-data, this requires data connection on.
Both these solutions are known to work for others, hopefully one of them works for you.

also, to clarify a few things here:
there is no tomtom for android.
basically, there is igo, navigon and ndrive.
these are offline navigation apps that do not require a data connection for navigation, since their maps, pois, voices... are stored on the phone itself, BUT navigon for instance, requires a short server connection to verify your version is legit. i don't know about the other two though.

Thanks I'll have to try that.
Basically what I want to know is that if I'm out the cell signal area AKA no cell signal and no data (obviously), the phone will still be able to get a lock? If so, that's crazy! I didn't know...I thought it either got your position from the net or triangulated your position via cell towers...not actually receiving data from a GPS satellite.
I used sygic when in spain it was really good no need to data
I searched alot for this fix but really only found moded Play Store apps. It turns out the fix is a lot more simple than that. No modded apps required (this worked for me and hopefully for you.
When you change the DPI, you get Google Store "incompatible apps" problem. The fix is this. First, I went to the app and deleted the cache. Then I uninstalled the google play store app. Reboot the phone, made sure the dpi setting of my phone was where I wanted it to be, in my situation, 260, then relaunched the google play store or market (whatever its called after you uninstall it). It reinstalled and presto....all my apps came back. I think it does a call out to the system to see what dpi your phone is running at and stores that somewhere...then serves you up what is compatible with your phone based on the first time query settings. Anyway, this worked for me and hopefully for you.
And I am running ICS 4.0.4 running the OnlyOne Rom version 4. I am not sure it will work on other versions of android but am pretty sure you have nothing to lose by trying it.
Please tell me if it works for you.
thanks

I believe everything I need comes already installed in the Gear S, so I wanted to turn it on and go for a run!
Am I being to naive to think this would work without a Samsung phone?
Thanks in advance.

According to this

YMMV
Exactly! That is what I want to do. But I keep reading I need a phone to update it and get the apps...
Would Nike+ work right out of the box?

I wouldn't bet on doing that. You're going to need a Samsung phone or some knowledge on how to install Gear Manager on your non-Samsung phone.

Without gear manager nothing works. It has to be setup using gear manager. If you know someone with a Samsung phone that is compatible with gear s you could get it going but it's complicated. I have a note 3 but like my Nokia 1520 phone. I am struggling trying to get it to work the way I want it to with the Nokia. So needless to say I'm using my Note 3 at the moment because I like the gear s so much.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using XDA Premium HD app
Right it's like buying an Ipad(at least the old ones) where at least once you need to install itunes and connect to a PC.
You need Gear manager at least to start. Then you need it if you want to install anything new.

A poster said he has an iphone when he bought the Gear S a sales employee paired it with a samsung demo phone in store and his stuff works for now until he needs an update then he's screwed
I bought 2, one for my wife and one for me.
I have a SGS5 and she had a Nexus 5. I figured I could set up both watches with my phone... the problem is when switching devices it FACTORY RESETS every time. So 1 watch per phone
I ended up buying her a Galaxy Avant as well as it was the cheapest way I could find for her to run her watch.
Kinda lame but she's happy so m'eh.
I love do the watch btw, it's perfect for my needs (ymmv).
start up without a Samsung

The video shows how to bypass the pairing to a Smasung phone when you start the Gear S for the first time.

It's pre-installed but the first time I tried to run it (the nike+ app) it told me I needed the phone app installed and running before it would do anything.

no thanks, well the weather app wasn't working and the news briefing didn't work as well.
I have an old samsung S3 which I used to pair the phone with. I bought a one plus one but in the end it just doesn't work with the one plus one.
There is a way also to be found here on the dxa forum to pass by a samsung and download the gear on any other android phone but this doesn't work a 100% either.
It's a bitc**** but in the end to get the most out of the watch is to do it with a samsung mobile which runs 4.3 and up.
I'm planning to build a site only with info for the Gear -S it's called www . gear-s.info and I hope to gather info of all the different places to get one proper library with info over the gear.
The phone looks great and has a real big X factor but there are still some downsides as well to it. One big issue is that it runs on Tizen and in a smartwatch world with all but the Gear's running on androidware it makes the development of apps for the Gears not a big priority with people.
Another thing I can not understand is that Samsung undermining their own sales by having the Gears only work with Samsung. Sales could triple if you would be able to run the gear manager on any other android machine.
I find Samsung getting more and more like Apple, at one point you need to buy everything from Samsung to communicate between the different mobile devices.
The problem is that they do really make nice things but it would make live a lot easier if they op the market to other mobile IOS and brands.
I do love the people on the XDA forums, the way they discover things and help people, their patience yep, they are great.
I'm going to try to find a way to get whatsapp on the gear S.
Good luck
Hans
