My EVO 4G LTE won't stay connected to LTE.
I just came to visit my family in ATL and it won't stay connected. When I reset my radio (airplane mode on then off) it connects to 4G with 3 or 4 bars and then disconnects every time. I haven't gotten it to stay connected for more than 20 seconds.
I'm running Stock With Goodies 2.14. I have roaming set to auto, and I have my data mode set to CDMA/LTE.
Any suggestions?
Update your prl and profile. Let me know how that works.
Yeah, I already tried that. I just tried it again for giggles and still no go.
I just did a full wipe and updated to stock with goodies 2.14 a little earlier because I was on 2.11 and it wasn't staying connected - I thought that a hard reset might help resolve the issue (plus I needed to update anyway).
The bars you see have nothing to do with your LTE signal. Stock OEM ROMs show 1x signal strength at all times, whether or not it says 3G or LTE. Chances are, you are on the edge of LTE with a very weak signal. The phone can connect to one tower for voice service but also be connected to a completely different tower much farther away for LTE (or EVDO for that matter), so a strong voice signal does not indicate a strong data signal.
There is a lot of relevant info on this stuff in the forums at s4gru.com. The people over there know exactly what they're talking about.
Ah... So I'm probably connected to the next tower over and it just goes out.
Just saw this there. http://s4gru.com/index.php?/topic/2...to-determine-your-actual-lte-signal-strength/

So, basically, the EVO LTE's LTE connect isn't very good. This kinda makes me upset.
I can get a constant connection if I set the mode as LTE only. It's not a good connection, but it is LTE. It makes me wonder if my phone doesn't know about other LTE towers nearby because sprint has excellent coverage here.

So far the official stance is that it is a software issue. An update is supposed to fix it.

That's probably what it is.. But there's no saying because the EVO 4G LTE seems to be having issues.. my girlfriend's iPhone 5 on sprint gets LTE in places I don't.

Well, I'm sure it is an Evo software issue (my GS3 gets LTE in places my sister's Evo doesn't; I'm hoping for her sake that it's a software issue), but the point was that the signal is weak enough for the phone to fall back to 3G instead of holding onto it and that the bars he saw were deceptive.

You know something? You're right. I make these forums smell like fecal matter by attempting to harmonize and combine similar topics. Nay, I am single-handedly bringing on the downfall of humanity! How dare I try to direct people to topics that have been created 3 times before to help other people who might have this problem so they don't have to go looking for the information in multiple, scattered threads.
And to cater to your apparent love of all things scatological, the next thing you know, parents aren't going to tell their kids to eat their vegetables more than once. And why should they? Learning from people who have been there before is simply not worth it when we can just spend 45 minutes on the can trying to take a grunt. (In case you don't get it, "learning from people [before]" refers to people who have previously created threads on the same topic and "45 minutes on the can" refers to wasting time searching for the information which is fragmented across a forum, which you seem to prefer.)

I read a lot of people were claiming much better data reception with the Photon over their old phone, so I thought I'd put it to the test. My old phone was an Evo4G and I still have one in the house in use (completely stock running Android 2.3), so I did a side-by-side comparison test to the Photon and this is what I got using SpeedTest.net:
Tests on 3G network
Evo4G: 279kbps/157kbps/1026ms (download/upload/ping)
Photon4G: 401kbps/211kbps/ 793ms (download/upload/ping)
Results: Photon was 44% faster on download, 34% faster on upload and 23% faster ping
Tests on 4G network
Evo4G: 3203kbps/188kbps/357ms (download/upload/ping)
Photon4G: 6454kbps/563kbps/274ms (download/upload/ping)
Results: Photon was 101% faster on download, 199% faster on upload and 23% faster ping
It is also important to note that the Evo had a lot of trouble running the test in 3G because the signal was so weak. For each good test it took about 10 tries while the Photon had no problems and I never had to retry a test in 3G on the Photon. Results shown are the average of the fastest 8 runs out of 10. This is except for the Evo 3G runs which were the average of only 6 runs because of the difficulty I had getting it to run at all on 3G. Thus, the 3G runs are biased towards the Evo since I removed more than two very slow runs and the differences on 3G may be understated (Evo may be slower than I am reporting on 3G).
Conclusion: Data Reception Rocks on the Photon4G!
This is what I've seen in numerous reviews and although I can't get a hold of one myself yet to do my own testing against my aging Epic, customers have been complaining of reception issues. Any word on others who might be experiencing this issue around you? It might just be a bad batch received.

What he was saying is, reception is great on the photon. And i agree. This is the best reception I've had on a sprint phone.

You misread the data. The Photon is much faster than the Evo4G. The higher the uploading and downloading numbers, the faster the data transfer. The smaller the ping number, the faster the data transfer. The Photon was faster in all measurements.
I will confirm AGAIN that the Motorola Photon absolutely has much better signal strength and faster, more stable data connection on 3G and 4G. This is the main reason I choose to keep it and put my EVO 3D back in the box and in my bottom drawer.
Wow that's impressive! How can anybody argue with that, being you have tested with all those different phones? Good to know. Thanks.
PS: Shhhh.... keep it on the DL!!! Let's hope Sprint doesn't get wind of this awesome reception or they will probably pull a Verizon and cripple the hell out of it so it barely works. Then we're all back to craptastic again.
I have to disagree with you about the Photon's reception 'cause mine SUCKS. I tried updating my profile and it didn't help. I tried updating my PRL several times and each time I got an error. I even tried going to a different part of the hous to update my PRL and it still failed with an error.
I can't even get this phone to connect to the market! Everytime I try I either get a timed out message or a no connection message.
And to add insult to injury it won't let me do a factory reset ( so I can return this piece f junk) until the battery is at 25%. The stupid thing has been on the charger for at least 45 minutes and it won't go past 20%.
On the positive side the voice connection seeems to work just fine. But I didn't get this to be a voice only phone I got it because every review I read said that it had fantastic data reception.

I really think I'm gonna just have to bite the bulle & pay Sprint's ETF so I can try T-Mobile. I'm having even worse reception problems on my Epic 4G.
Why did u return it...it was software or hardware related.....photons kill on signal
U should of tried a full wipe and restore if that didn't fix it then warranty the phone

Even worse on Epic = Photon Reception is *****in
But before you pay the ETF maybe you should just go grab a t-mo phone on contract for a day or two, see if the signal works for you, if it does then drop sprint and have your number ported to Tmo. This could save you the ETF if TMo isn't any better.
Depending on your area, TMos network signal will probably be stronger since they are GSM - takes less antenna to cover area with GSM than CDMA.

I might try another Photon. I called Sprint about my EVO 4g's reception problems & they were able to get it working again.
I don't know why I didn't think to try that with the Photon. That was a very nice phone
Or maybe I'll crawl back to Verizon. Verizon just installed a new tower by me in august and they have 4G in my area.
So... About 4 days ago, I noticed that I couldn't connect to 4G anymore, but 3G works fine. Now I've always had full signal 4G where I live because there's a tower just down the block by the Sprint store. I can connect and I even get an I.P. address, but there's no data getting through. You can imagine how many times I went to recovery, cleared data, wiped, re-flashed, all the while thinking it was the ROM that had problems.
The answer came to me in the form of my younger brother. He has the Evo Shift and also had been having issues with his 4G. Now his phone is stock, so that ruled out the ROM being the issue (thank GOD I thought I somehow screwed my WiMax). So he tells me there was a power outage about 4 days ago at around 3am, since then he hasn't been able to connect.
What I'm thinking is- IT'S BEEN 4 DAYS... You guys here who work at Sprint, do you think a small power outage can bork the 4G network for 4 days?
And if so, how come it hasn't affected the 3G network as well?
Maybe It's another issue altogether...
Sprint actually has 4G?

4G is WiMax and 3G is EVDO so one getting knocked out might not affect the other....also, if they haven't had reports about that particular tower, they might not know to fix it.

That sucks man. I'm blanketed in supposedly 4g service and can't get it neither. I wanna go take a dump on one of their towers.
Can a power outage kill 4G? Certainly. Cell towers work like many other electronic devices, and are still prone to things getting shorted (Even if there are several layers of protection to try and stop that). I would honestly recommend calling tech about it and seeing if the towers near you have any posted outages, or at least report the issue.
They likely cannot fix the issue unless they know about it, and if everyone presumes everyone else will report the issue; it may never get reported.

I'll call tomorrow and bother someone over at the local sprint. I'm just wondering how did the 4G go out and not the 3G network. Oddly enough I also noticed the 3G network is slightly faster now... i.e. - I could never watch HD movies on Youtube without having the 4G on, now since of course I can't connect I tried on 3G and it didn't skip a beat. Maybe breathing too much spray paint fumes is making me crazy
The 4G sits on a separate tower from the Sprint tower's as the 4G is provided via Clear.

Hello gang!
I've been having some issues with my Evo 3D. From time to time while I'm sharing internet via wifi tether or just browsing over the phone the 4G just randomly turn off. Over looked for something strange provoking this but the logcat doesn't say anything that would raise concern.
I have a stock ROM and Kernel on hboot 1.5 sw 2.17 .
Anyone else having this issue?

Welcome to Sprint/Clear's 2500 mhz spectrum (for 4G WiMax). It's really only useful when outside with very little obstructions and near a tower. The band doesn't penetrate buildings, or other things for that matter, very well. You could have great signal in front of a window, move 2 feet and then lose it.
This is why people perceived WiMax as a failure, the technology doesn't necessarily suck, the band they put it on does. Clear's home internet service is a little more reliable, but that's mostly because their modems amplify the signal - this would kill our batteries in no time if we had to do that.

Agree with you, I'm very aware of the trashy 2500mhz spectrum from back in the day as a COMM SGT, but I would understand if it disconnects and keeps scanning, but the problem that I'm seeing on my phone is that the 4G radio gets powered off completely, and I have to restart it in order to get it working; sometimes this happens even with full bars, outside with network activity happening.
PS. It's funny how Sprint is so attracted to trash technology: Iden, WiMax... what's next!? lol

Oh I understand better now. I think I did see that happen before. I think it's rom/kernel related. In fact, I tried flashing another kernel recently and every time my phone powered on wimax would be on by default when I had already turned it off prior to shutting down and never turned it on anyway. Every version of that kernel I tried did that to me. Going back to stock kernel, no default 4G on.
Or my next guess is maybe you have a misbehaving widget/toggle?

Whats next? LTE? I hope that works out.
I'm rooted on ice cream sandwhich rom, sense 3.6
Basically my 4g connection is very poor, if and when it does work, its slow. It is probably related to my 4g coverage area, but I don't remember it being this bad. I went from an evo 4g, to an iphone 4, and now to the evo 3d, so I don't remember my previous 4g experience. Besides from coverage, can it be related to the rom I installed (cool ics)? Is there a way to fix or diagnose it?
thanks

what are you talking about? There is no wimax 4g network. the network they call a 4g network isn't even a network. It's not even possible to drive a mile without losing your connection. look at your bars. any bars? Also didn't know your provider would actually support their fake network that they don't claim anymore. yeah. they won't repair any towers. they won't fix any issues with wimax. they won't do anything that helps and supports their customers. They don't care about you. they have never cared about you. Now if you want a 4G network. Go verizon. 50+M down. 12M up.
what do you mean runcool? Isn't wimax the standard used in our phones for ,4g (technology or network)? Is it no longer supported?
nvm. I did a read http://gizmodo.com/5847643/its-official-sprint-is-going-lte
Has wimax been shut down completely ? I still get connected to 4g here and there.
You might find a single tower that has their so called fake 4G network WHICH ISN'T 4G!.... But if it goes down. THEY WILL NOT REPAIR IT BECAUSE SPRINT IS CHEAP AND THE OWNERS OF SPRINT WOULD CARE LESS about you and I. Dishonest company. Refusal. I can see many issues with their LTE 4G network as well. So tell me.... Verizon can get 50M down 12M up..... why is that? why can't sprint do ANYTHING TO IMPROVE THEIR NETWORK!? Also why can't they just FLAT OUT ALLOW OUR PHONES to work like AT&T?!?!? meaning fix their 3G network! It would ONLY take a software update. lol. however, hint hint. the software update would make their 3G look like 4G lmao! because their 4G is so lame! hahahhaha
but to answer your question... wimax development/adding new towers/supporting has been shut down. they do not care about their WiMax and they never have cared about it. Yes I hope their CEO reads this comment! hope he reads makes changes in his crap company after reading this. BUT fact is that he doesn't care about you and I. he only cares about his own pockets. he would care less if he drags sprint into bankruptcy because he already made his millions on ruining a company.

This is just hate speech and upset ranting. You make some okay points, but get over is what I think.
OP, you need to go to the dialer, type in ##DATA# and check your WiMax settings. If there is anything about vm or virgin mobile in the settings, that is probably your issue. If you know your msl, edit the settings (you can find the right ones for sprint somewhere on here) and that should make a difference. Also, there is a thread about 4G Hack in the Apps, Themes section. Check that out.

Actually. it's called facts. There aren't any legit towers. Even if you're right next to a tower... you get the same speed with AT&T. lol There is no hate or ranting. So if this does not belong as a new thread then I'm sorry, I'm fairly new here. Anyways, I think I stumbled on to something today with my Note 3. As with a lot of you, I have been having reception issues. The reason though is because it tries to connect to a LTE network before 3G. This sounds fine and dandy, but it would rather have 1 bar with LTE instead of 5 bars with 3G. This is why the reception is worse, it wants to hold onto the 4G tower.
I know this because when I turned off my 4G data and put it on CDMA only, my reception went up a lot!
Any thoughts?
