Sign the petitions, share/support and jump ship? I call triple damage to Moto for failing intelligence check!
Thanks Mof for all your support. I too have given up on the Photon and on Motorola. I got me an EVO 4G LTE!!
Best to you.
My next phone likely HTC if Android, maybe WP8 (really tired of fragmentation). Never again a Moto.
And I'll do everything I can in my company and professional network to limit Moto sales. Major ethical failure.
Hopefully Motorola pulls their heads out of their A$$es because if they don't they are going to lose a lot of business, loss of webtop and ICS, JB production my case in point. I'm looking at going with Galaxy S III for my next phone.
Why GS3 and not GN2?
GSIII specs are amazing. Other than the screen. Way too damn big for me to use as a phone honestly. I might go to a 4.5", but that would most likely be my absolute largest.
thanks mof!
i'm shipping off to the note ii when it arrives in the US. it's gonna be a sweet phone minus CM support. i'm sad about that part. it's the perfect size though!
Yeah, some of these new phones are just getting too big. They're becoming small tablets.

But isn't that the idea, instead of having 3 devices, 4" phone, 7" tablet and 10" tablet; you just end up w/ two, a 5"+ phablet and 10" tablet. And personally even though I'm not a big guy, I have an Asian hand size; I very much prefer bigger size phone for a long time. I see using 2hand operation is much better. I prefer seeing how my entire paragraph when typing not just a few words at a time. So yes that's usually mean decent size with hardware keyboard or larger screen.

I was a bit worried at first about the size but the 4.8 is a nice fit.

I loved the convergence of old PDA and phones into 1 smartphone - because that was functional convergence into about the same form factor that eliminated one device.
However, my issue with 5" phones is just simply size - I carry my smartphone in either a dress shirt pocket, dress pants pocket, or clip on holster. A 5" phone is just too big for the first two to fit, and looks a bit silly on the 3rd.
I personally have no interest in a 7" tablet (though I understand and respect that many may). I prefer to keep a 4" phone, a 10" tablet that I carry to meetings, and a small SSD-based laptop that I use in my desk and hotel room. And client provides desktop in the office.

I'm in the market for a tablet and I like the idea of getting a product that's featured in a google video. I figure that it's used as the "official" testing/development device.

Thanks!
Motorola Xoom possibly? Or they probably just rendered a random tablet. I wouldn't get a tablet just because it is in a Google video. Esp not the Xoom
Looks like a Xoom.

Yeah, I wouldn't get it for that reason alone, but if the TP was the "official" google testing device, that would be awesome.
A lot of the speculation is that it was a Xoom running ICS, which would speed it up quite a bit. Xoom is supposed to get an ICS update soon, so that may have been what it was. And since Google now owns Motorola, it is likely they used one for their videos.
Yeah, I think you guys are right. The volume rocker on the Xoom is in the upper-left side. You can see them sticking out in the video.
Weird that they get rid of the "Motorola" on the top since they own the company.
On a side-note: after how terrible the Atrix/Bionic were, I would never consider getting a Xoom. There's no good reason why a dual-core phone should run so bad.
yea, it's a xoom. but i'd only buy one if you want to be completely annoyed and dissapointed with such a ****ty device.
or if you got one for $50, because that's all that POS is worth.

I can't believe the pricing of the second generation Xoom WITH CONTRACT. What a joke.
Hopefully, the TP gets ICS in the near future.
It's definitely a Xoom. There is the Verizon and Motorola logos on the top of the tablet. That aside yes it is running ICS, you can tell from the Roboto font and the blue status icons. I owned a Xoom for a couple of weeks until I returned it and promptly waited on the Original Transformer. Now I sold my TF and I'm waiting on the Prime. lol

yea, they basically gave it the screen it should have had in the first place (which is no where near as nice as the ips+ screen on the prime) and cut the corners off for no reason whatsoever.
when the original tablet testing device for HC (xoom) had no uSD card support for a port it launched with for MONTHS and MONTHS, i'll take one that asus has tinkered with and made better any day of the week.
so far asus has been great with updates for the TF101, so i have no doubts they will get ICS on the prime asap as well. and with all the hype around the prime, assuming they get some supply out there, i have high hopes for the dev community around this device.

more likely it was just moto being moto, as in moto being a bunch of complete idiots that can't build anything good anymore, come up with excuses as to why they can't live up to their promises to the community and will dissapear in the next year when google gets fed up of their crappy products that don't deserve 1/2 the price the set them at.
but i digress, bottom line to the OP, get the prime (after i get mine of course) and you will be FAR less dissapointed than buying anything motorola, dev device or not. (personally, if you really want a "dev" tablet, get the IO edition galaxy tab, far better piece of hardware imo.
I have a 32 gig iPad 1 and am looking to trade it for an Android tablet. Someone just offered up their GTablet. It looks great hardware wise but the screen worries me. Without the ability to inspect the unit yet I wanted to go right to the source.
What do you guys really think about the screen and viewing angle on the GTab?

Honestly, The GTab has the worst viewing angle of all tablets. It is horrible compared to my Xoom and worse compared to my TF. The GTab screen works OK, you just have to be in front of it.

What angle in degrees does it start to fall off?
You can see it fall away at 10 degrees both vertically and horizontally. And good luck viewing it outside... LOL
It is what it is, a great device to hack on and play with. This was my first Android device and I learned about an OS that I previously had no clue about. That's probably why I still have it.
Guess that pretty much makes my mind up. I'll hold out for something better.
Thanks for the input.
There are definitely better devices out there if you want something that works right out of the box, and there are quite a few devices coming out soon with pricing comparable to the gTablet. The gTablet viewing angle isn't the best, especially since the screen was made for netbooks. That being said, it works fine for me. I knew the shortcomings before getting it, and was expecting worse. It won't be up to par with an iPad at all.
Where the gTablet excels is the ability to tweak it. From the many different ROMs out there (FroYo, Gingerbread, and Honeycomb versions), plus a very active development community working on bringing ICS to the gTablet, it can be a tinkerer's delight.

I can't even seem to give my gtablet away! I mean jesus christ, I had that on sale for a while... little bites here and there, but no one ends up buying it.. I ended up giving it to my 4 year old daughter to learn stuff... since then, it has been sitting on the nightstand... I mean seriously, I cant give this thing away!!!
I own a gtab. There is no comparison between an ipad (assuming gen 1 because 2 makes no sense) and a gtablet. Ipad is simply a more refined higher quality product with better integrated software esp if you own any other mac products. Still don't think the msrp on an ipad (either gen is worth it for what any tablet offers). The screen issue goes beyond the viewing angle. The screen is sharper on the ipad for reading - especially magazines.
What gtab does very well is have a huge user development base that is on the verge of unleashing ICS for us to play with. After that everything begins and ends with the difference in screen quality and apps.
That said I enjoy my gtab and am in no hurry to upgrade (unless I found someone who wanted to trade an ipad for it) as I can deal with it's limitations vs. the cost I paid to get something with these hardware specs.
ssmr2t: curious what you tried to sell your gtab for. I would think somewhere between 125.00 and 150.00 and it would be gone in a heartbeat unless it's all beat up. But I don't think it's worth more than 150.00 nowadays by any stretch.

I haven't turned on my gtab in about three months. Yeah. They suck pretty hard. It has one good viewing angle - dead on, slightly tilted, as if it were attached as a screen for a cheap netbook, which is exactly what it is - the screen from a cheap netbook.
If you want to trade for mine, let me know

srsly though, the viewing angles of the screen suck. if you aren't looking at it at the exact perfect angle part of the screen is just dark. though whatevs, it works for me.

Seriously, it's a fine hacking android tegra2 device with no vendor support and flagging xda support. Oh, and that first gen iPad? yeah, it's running iOS5. From Apple. Without any hacking needed at all. And THAT is better than a tablet that was disowned by the reseller (viwesonic) and the ODM (forgot what the Chinese company's name was - malta? whatever) the day it shipped.

No, just supported. Which is worth whatever you deem it to be.
For what it's worth some of us actually like the Gtab...
I use it for work and it's great. It's just as fast as any other tablet I've used. I hold it or have it on my desk, I haven't a clue about whether it works from an angle or not and I really don't know why anyone would care. I guess from this forum some people prefer to look at it that way.
I have Honeycomb on it, VTL launcher, Dropbox and a million programs which if they are any good do what I want. A screen protector which keeps the fingerprints way down and a nice case.
The only issue I have is the weight, too heavy to use as a Kindle.
If it breaks I'll get something different, maybe an Ipad, maybe not.
I threw V6 supercharger on my tab running FB 10.3 and it's made a big difference. Yeah the screen sucks, but it doesn't matter to my 2yo, who is the main user.

It is almost criminal to say a first gen ipad is even close to being as ****ty as a gtablet.
I own a gtablet and it really is only useful as a play around with android device.
The iPad one is still the second best tablet on the market.
And this is coming from a person who owns a gtablet, droid incredible, and a galaxy nexus.

There's probably a dozen Android tablets out there that are better than the iPad v1, especially when you consider in price. There are many tablets better than the iPad 1 in specs, price and OS. All they lack is a half masticated fruit logo.

who remembers reading this (or similar post on a news site)?
wait scratch that, I can't post the link for engadget yet. Well anyways, this is all about my enlightenment about the Galaxy Note on September 1st
Man... those hot august nights, gave way to a cool fall breeze. Man, remember that? Yeah man... I feel like it was just yesterday. Just yesterday that I was checking out the devices featured at IFA, just yesterday when I saw this beauty. I headed over to the micro site samsung had created and watched that video. Sheesh, hard to imagine its been so many months. I had almost given up hope on seeing this beast, everyone said it wouldn't be coming to the US. I'm glad they were wrong.
Just wanted to share this precious moment with you guys.
Months after, I saw it at CES. It felt great in my hand, and I was really excited about when it would release. I didn't sadly get my caricuture from the booth, I was too busy using the phone. Can you believe all the SPens were gone when I went to check them out? How awful. Still it was a NOTEworthy experience. I absolutely loved it.
Fastforward to Feb. 5, and I preordered. HURRAY. What a long journey awaiting a phone.
Speaking of the GNOTE... I'm worried about my Best Buy preorder. Presidents day is Monday, and being the cheapo I am, I took the free shipping. That means if they use USPS (which they said they might), I'll have to wait until at least Wednesday, if I'm at home at the time of delivery. What a bunch of crap.
Well the wait is almost over. I'll be upgrading from an iPhone 4 (yay) after having an iPhone for close to 4 years now!
Well anyways, thanks for checking this thread out. Our wishes pretty much came true!
Welcome to XDA!
And you'll love the switch. I remember when I first switched from an iphone to an Android. Never looked back, even when the 4 came out.

Yeah, I can't wait! After my iphone 4, I almost switched to a dell streak because my iphone was frustrating me. I got my device switched and everything was fine. Then the atrix released and I talked to an At&t rep and almost switched again, but I decide to wait.
I'm glad the wait was worth it,now I get the GNOTE
and Thank you for the welcome , I'm a long time stalker, and have lurked the Iconia Tab forum a lot (since I got my iconia). I used to be on Androidtablet forums when they first came out 2 years back, but everyone really just stuck to xda so I decided to go back.

Nothing wrong with liking iOS/preferring it to Android (though you're right to be afraid of people flaming you for stating such an opinion here ); both platforms have their advantages and I know lots of computer geeks who still prefer to use iOS over Android. Personally, my issue is with people who have the "cult of Apple" mentality and trash Android without any firsthand knowledge of the platform. I'm actually pretty surprised you went with an iconia over an iPad--if I were going to buy a 10" tablet it'd probably be Apple despite iTunes, just because of the general mess I've found Honeycomb and Android tablet apps to be, though of course I say this as an owner of zero tablets of any kind, so I guess I'm glad your Iconia's working out enough to bring you in on the phone front. Always good to have new blood in here, in my opinion.

Never happen. Personally, I'd be surprised if the iPhone 5 has much over a 4" screen. There is no denying that the Note's size makes it a niche product, and there is no reason to believe that Apple's model for releasing a single iPhone at a time will change.

This exactly, I highly doubt they would. Considering Steve Jobs on multiple occasions bashed Android going for higher and higher screen sizes, I don't see his wants being trampeled on so quickly either. iPhone's will most likely stay at 3.5" for a long time.

Buddy, you have no idea how much I agree with you about all this. I like both platforms, all for different reasons. I'd truly like MEEGO to have been popular, true Open source and extremely powerful linux distro had it any real dev support. Intel and Nokia were supporting it, there was hope. But that died with the N9, oh well.
Too many apple sheeple are out there, it just disturbs me. Back when there was donut and cupcake I understand. There were limited number of devices and they had problems, and the iphone 3G was one heck of a phone. I used to argue day and night with my best friend's with his G1 back in high school. But ever since 2.2 and the SGS and especially now, its almost silly to hate on android. Its a fantastic OS!
And I regret not getting an iPad a lot. I actually wanted the Asus TF101, and waited on release date. Little did I know Asus had supply issues, and barely had an initial supply for release day. It took 2 months for supply chain problems to get fixed. I got bored, and bought an Acer Iconia the next week.
I HATED HONEYCOMB SINCE 3.0.0! IT WAS AWFUL. Buggy as hell. But after many months, overclocking, Taboonay 2.1 Rom and 3.2, it is much better. Still a great device for content consumption such as netflix and youtube, which is all I use it for now. Browsing is still pretty slow. Dolphin's good, Firefox pisses me off by not having flash. Overall I like Opera even if its sunspider is not the best, it is fast! The build quality of the iconia is laughable. Fully aluminum construction my behind! IT feels like its made of plastic and will fall apart anyday. The camera cover (a common problem) just fell off within a month. I found out a cheap piece of tape was holding it together, a true testament to the quality of Acer. Garbage tablet. Garbage tablet OS.
I'm really excited about gingerbread though and ICS. my pops has an Epic 4G touch and its a great phone. ICS I had a terrible time with on the nexus at a VZW store, but that was before people knew to force gpu rendering. I like ICS for the most part, its fast and smooth, but it borrowed a ton from HC (expected) and eh..... I like gingerbread a lot, lets leave it at that.
Thanks for the welcome guys
I know we are still all enjoying our brand new EVO's but google just gave us something even more exciting to salivate over!
What's everyone's thoughts on it?
So far I can't say that it "blew me away" but for the price point you really can't get better hardware without having the manufacturer take a severe hit on profits...I'd hate to see Asus or google turn into the next sony.
We are getting a quad-core CPU and apparently an amazing GPU, what else can you really ask for? The resolution is pretty darn decent for the price as well.
If this was any other device i'd typically pass it up BUT this is a nexus device! I am freaking excited as a mofo for what the development community is going to look like. This is the first actual flagship android device imo since phones have always been crippled by carrier support. Every dev and their mamas are going to get this thng! I seriously can't wait to see what's in store. I mean every android device has their share of phenomenal devs, now imagine all of them in one place...
By far the greatest feature any device can have for me.
Can't wait!
what are all your thoughts on it? One more new android device before years end to purchase?

agreed. but again, as you said... for the money, hell of a deal. and i am not slamming the tegra 3, it is a good chipset, as well as the GPU it comes with. but the s4 chip and GPU is unmatched in performance as of right now.
adreno 225 GPU is flat out a rendering powerhouse. and the chip architecture of the s4 is more efficient.
plus... i can only imagine under heavy use what kind of a power suck that tegra 3 will be with 4 logical processors rolling at once.
here is some interesting stuff i found, for further comparison.

In light of Goggle's efforts to build Google Play as a unified content portal (and the fact that every full-sized Android tablet that tried to compete with the iPad has been a train wreck so far), it seems like they're taking direct aim at Amazon rather than at Apple.
I'm gonna get one to tide me over until Surface x86 comes out then my 5 year old will have an awesome Android tablet.
Keep calm and flash on...

The gains are likely due in no small part to improvements in Krait's cache/memory controller. Krait can also issue multi-issue FP instructions, A9 class architectures can apparenty only dual-issue integer instructions.

not a bad device, for the money. but definitely not "cutting edge" performace by any means. i am patiently waiting for an s4 tablet.... then i will drop some dime on another device.

Tegra 3 is going to multi-task better. Plus all the exclusive games come with Tegra.
The s4 is good for a phone. But tablet the tegra is better.

I completely agree with you. If I had a choice I'd choose the S4 over Tegra 3 on just about any devices...but once again, the biggest draw for me on this device is going to be the development community.
I feel pretty confident in saying that this device will have the biggest Android development community of any device thus far.
I broke my iPad about a month and a half ago and waited to see this tablet. It satisfies everything I'm looking for and I prefer the 7'' screen too. I already preordered the 16GB.
I won't be buying it. Even if it came with keylime pie. No micro sd and the bezel seems too big.... They could have made the screen bigger.
it says it has a "micro usb," my question is
a) do I need a usb OTG cable to plug in an external hdd?
b) can I use the external hdd while charging the tablet?
wow, it really stinks there's no microSD, I really figured that'd be a given.
What I'm wondering is why they decided to go with 7" rather than 10" or 10.1".
7" inches just feels too close to a phone for me.

It is… but they want your money. Want something with microSD support? Pay more for another device. Wouldn’t have been hard to implement, but hey let’s just rape the consumer because we can. Better not give them everything all in one otherwise they will not buy other products…. Perceived value. “you get what you pay for…” its BS. You get what they decide to give you at whatever price they decide is appropriate. Adding features costs nothing really to them…. Adding VALUE…….. for your money…. Does, however, cost them money as you are then inclined to not pay twice the amount for the same product with a few more cool features.
Welcome to marketing 101.
It’s the same concept Apple lives on… “hey let’s make an 8, 16, 32, and 64 GB version of the SAME DEVICE… why, you ask? Because then it will cause sheople to feel like the extra space is more valuable, and they will give more money to US rather than sandisk…. Who would otherwise conveniently provide them a way to increase storage space.”
Nope, you buy a more expensive device from us so we can have your money instead of them.
This kind of crap pisses me off. if you couldn’t tell. lollllll

There is no tablet specific android version anymore. Honeycomb was the only one.
Have you not noticed that the Nexus devices don't have sd cards... Why would this one be different. Also the less storage you have on board the more likely you are to use their cloud services and not pirate video.

Very disappointed it doesn't have a SD card slot, but at that price I ordered one any way.
Motorola make laptop docks powered by their phones such as the Atrix, is there any such thing for the samsung range, particularly the S3?
check out "clambook", its coming soon.
nice one, thanks!
Ubuntu for Android also seems interesting, although it's not for laptops I don't think and it's not available yet either.

Thanks for the info
Motorola MADE laptop docks, they are discontinued due to them being pointless and stupid.

Well, I guess the Clambook solves the age old question of what to get myself for Christmas... Looks really promising! Would love to not have to drag my macbook around with me anymore!
if they made it to use widi (allshare cast) to wirelessly do this I would pick one up in a heartbeat. cable makes it a bit cumbersome.

They still make them, they recently announced plans to discontinue them
Pointless and stupid to some is amazing to another. Windows tablets were considered pointless and stupid in 1998 but now iPads and Nexus tabs are all the rage and we got muvvaz dying to get a Windows 8 tablet. There's something called taste, and another called opinion, which we are all entitled to, though to feed the trollage, the Motodocks don't sell due to Moto not being a huge brand anymore (not many phones sold = less people wanting a lapdock for their phone), the price was around the price of a full laptop and that they are pretty much aimed at the techies. The number of techies out there compared to normal consumers is pretty low, but much larger when you look at techies overall compared to Motorola phone owning techies, and a lapdock that runs with any top end android or ios device at a lower price has a lot more scope for sales. I would love to pick one up for £80-100, would stretch to £150 if I could have one device work with my S3, 4S and iPad 3 rather than needing to buy separate connectors.

Using Nexus4 stock and unrooted, Kii keyboarding it up
It looks cool but the atrix actually docked on the laptop. This isn't really lap-friendly. It couldn't be used on a Train with no tables for example. Shame, the hardware itself looks nice.
They should have a dockable area where the touchpad is, so you can use the screen as a touchpad
