It's probably just Tegra 3's DAC.
I've tried to contact HTC about it. I have the S4 (HOXL) version, and I really don't want to upgrade and lose SQ.
I believe the headphone jack is still using the same DAC, but the voltage is up to 1.5V compared to .5V on the One X. The external speaker has a custom amplifier to reduce noise and increase max volume.
I find the SQ and Volume on the HOX good enough, just hoping the HOX+ is same or better. Am waiting on that before placing my order

Should be a lot better considering HTC mentioned it while talking about the HOX+.
I don't know what a DAC or sq is but I hope they start putting loudspeakers on their devices that compete with iPhone 4s the loudspeaker on that is so loud and it maintains to be clear which makes it brilliant another think I hope is HTC stop placing loudspeaker at the back of the device and instead on the top I love the design of the lumia 900 and iPhone all the ports are in the right place. I like to work and listen to music without having to cover my loudspeaker. I personally think this is a design dealt to place the speakers on th back Nokia and apple never do this.

Does the one x+ hisses like mad with sensitive iems like the one x?
You do not really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother
Just bought this to replace a smashed Galaxy S3, through a pair of Shure SE535s with custom eartips it certainly doesn't sound any worse. Kind of a leap of faith as I had no clue about the sound quality either but I'm not disappointed.

Can you hear hiss on soft parts or when listening to music you hit pause (till the amp shut down)?
You do not really understand something unless you can explain it to your grandmother
Not at all. My IEMs are fairly sensitive, but AFAIK they're 32 ohm so there are more sensitive ones out there. The only thing I can hear is a tiny bit of coil whine when it's charging but I have to be concentrating on finding it to be hearing it.
Apparently they upped the voltage on the headphone jack and holy crap you can tell. The bass has some serious definition to it - with the Beats Audio off that is .

How the hell did you get a hold of OneX+ already?
It came out in the UK a few days ago, quite cheap too. £429 pay as you go on O2 for the 64gb model - the 64gb I Phone 5 is £700 for reference.

Would you be able to give a SQ breakdown with a pair of full-size headphones?
I'll be receiving mine sometime in the next few days & will be running a pair of Klipsch X10 & Flac with the HOX+ & I'm hoping the SQ is going to be better than the HOX was, cause that was flat & lifeless.
I'll let you know my findings....
It has to be pointed out that I was previously testing with electronic and more "treble" based music, the phones sound quality kind of drops quite a bit with any sort of rock music, which is quite disappointing. I remedied it with a Fiio E6.

Beats Audio is just a bunch of marketing bull**** to describe a crappy equalizer preset, nothing more.
After all, remember, Beats comes from the same company that partnered with Monster Cable to bring you more of their overpriced overmarketed crap. Beats is nothing but a scam to push overpriced mediocre crap using Dr. Dre's name.
As opposed to Samsung, who just silently put in a top-rated Wolfson DAC into most of their devices (unfortunately, ours is one of the exceptions. The Yamaha MC1-N2 isn't so hot).
I thought beats on the HTC phones was just a software ...... I didn't know it was interlaced with the audio chip as well

On HTC phones, it's just software - nothing special in the chip. That's why my attitude towards it is so negative.
As compared to the original Galaxy S series, which had NO audio-specific marketing mumbojumbo, but DID have one of the most highly regarded DAC chips out there.
The MC1-N2 isn't so hot, but it's probably better than what's in most HTCs, even the "beats" ones.

Wait so the chip in the sgs2 does that effect the quality of the audio that comes through my headphones?

Yeah, it's not quite as good as the one in the original Galaxy S phones is.
Meh, maybe it was just me but I couldn't tell that much of a difference.
I used my captivate and now my SGSII to play music in my car via headphone jack to aux out on the headunit and it's been a very noticeable difference, mainly with volume.

you need expensive speakers/ headphones and the proper source files to hear it. mine were 500 when I bought them. it isn't important to most people. some actually spend over 1000 on a tv, then play sound through tv speakers.
Honestly...
Just get a nice set of headphones and make sure you to your music at the highest bit rate possible.Instant beats audio =P there's nothing extra special about any of the beats audio products really.

My skullcandy full metal jacket buds sound worlds better and clearer than my brothers beats ear buds. Just saying. I know sound is quality is sort of a subjective topic but it was a clear difference.

skullcandy is not really considered good, so don't use that brand for reference. I don't know what beats sounds like, but its more about dr. dre than quality - what Entropy512 wrote. skullcandy looks like the high end ones, but they don't have the same insides and break easily. but they are probably better than free ones.
I have the Sennheiser CX980i headphones which are say better then beats headphones and the difference from my captivate to my i777 is huge I wasn't sire if it was just me or not but when I got home I made sure to use my captivate to play a song then play that on mY i777 and its noticeable

I think his point was that cheap Skullcandies perform better than overpriced Beats crap.
My Skullcandy Titans haven't broken yet, and with Comply foam eartips they're comfortable and sound great.
Even the big guys have durability problems - I was looking at a set of Shures before I bought the Skullcandies, and the Shures had all sorts of problems with wire breakage.
Beats audio is surely marketing horse**** with no real validity. Regarding GS2 sound quality it does fall a little short of the Captivate's chip but its a concession I think most are willing to make given the others GS2 specs.
Also, if you have a decent set of earphones/headphones you can distinguish between the two. I have a set of Klipsch Image S4(one of the better set under $100 IMO) and with those I can tell the difference. With lesser cans you might not be able to tell.
Shure Headphones
If you want a really good pair of headphones or buds buy "Shure". Professional Quality DJ Headphones Full-range audio performance, comfort, and durability for DJ use and personal listening. Plus their unbelievably loud.
Whoa what is this headfi now? But yes beats is nothing more than marketing like what everyone else has said. If you want to try to distinguish the difference pick up some quality iems or full size cans. Also Bose is not high quality and to give monster credit their actual high end gear isn't too bad...

I do not talk on the phone much (or at least try not too), but I will only purchase a moto 'flip' type personally from now on. I really love the ability to quickly turn it on/off by flipping the mic piece. I have used a few different Moto flip sets, and currently also have a Plantronics Voyager Pro+ (recieved from work). They all sound decent (at least), and the wind/noise cancellation is excellent w/the Voyager (and gets better with the Motos (which is good),as the sets get newer).
Since I do not wear the set in my ear all the time, the tedious on/off process with any other set, really is a problem for me. Holding a button for 1-2 sec gets to be an issue, and then you forget and it stays on (with you forgetting). Then you think your phone is not working because the ear piece is be used where it is sitting in your car. Well, at least that happened to me once, a while ago, with my blackberry.
Another cool thing (maybe) is the NFC pairing - nothing earth shattering, but it may be the only way to use the NFC today .
I have not used that particular Moto model, but since it is one of their top of the line models, it will sound/perform well. I have experiance with their H700/710/H720, H17, H15. Also some garbage ones, and a Cardo Scala 500.
I may have liked the sound better from other units in the past, but the on/off was always the most important think for me.

Bose bt2. Hands down the best I've used. And I've been using the jawbones since the first one. The plantronics voyager 975 (forget the number, comes with charging case. Doesn't do a2dp) is good with calls too though. Other than that my opinion and I've used and tried many bts. Is you get what u pay for. 150$ is a small price to me considering all my voice calls are through my headset.
(1200min or so a month in voice calls)
Ps
Bose sound quality is excellent (to and fro), good distance, a2dp, relatively good comfort.
Jb era is second because the noise assassin can get intrusive at times and muffle your voice.

bluant q2 awesome!!
So I went with the Motorola Elite Flip. I am disappointed. If I pay that much for a bluetooth headset, I don't want it to limit me no matter how inappropriate my language may be. Couldn't figure out a way to turn the censor/filter off so I'm just gonna return it.

Just normal, HTC headphones. I was disappointed when I watched the unboxing video...
Blaah. Was afraid of that. Everywhere I read of x:s specs they are quick to mention beats audio, but not a single word on the sucky stock phones.
I hate deceptive marketing!
I actually tried the phones yesterday, since my mw600 was discharged. The sound in the stock phones was really good for that type of headphone. If it weren't for a handful of other reasons I'd consider using them.
Has no one else got a pair of Beats by Dre Solo with the device? As well as the HTC ones in the box..?
Nope. Considering that the "beats by dr dré solo" headphones cost about 160 euro over here ( more than half of what I paid for the DX) I'm not really surprised.. Must've been an awesome deal you've had.

Oh mine came with the contract I got the phone on. Weird since the whole 'Beats by Dre' is like a selling point.
"Beats by Dr Dré" is available on my phone, but seems to be restricted to an audio filter that sounds like a generic loudness filter to my semi-developed ears . May work like magic if you like the music by Dr Dré, but I may be too old for that

I've been using the Klipsch S4a with Headset Button Controller, which finally fixed that ridiculous HTC bug where the button would call the last contact. They sound great and I got an open box pair for $50 bucks off eBay. Would be nice to have separate volume control on them but I haven't seen any headphones able to do that on Android yet.

+1. These have good sound quality, despite being earbuds (or pods as they call them), and not ear plugs. Perfect for people with narrow ear canals, as most plugs won't fit.
I didn't see a earphones thread so I wanted to start the topic. In my opinion LG did great with the 1 watt back speaker but kinda dropped the ball with the earphone Jack. I feel like it could be louder or maybe it's the earphones I'm using. I'm using the monster DNA ear buds and I just wanted to see what other user recommend for this sweet device.

Yeah, my HTC One's loudness was massive compare to G3's. And I'm using Sony MDR1-RNC headphones. The sound quality is ok but could be 2-3 steps more on the loudness scale.
The sound quality seems pretty good with my VSonic GR07 MKII , but more quantity (volume) is needed to drive them. I'm sure everything will be great after root is acquired and audio mods are applied.
I use the Shure SE846 IEMs, so I have a lot of isolation going here which means the volume is MORE than adequate, even for hip hop and metal. What really amazes me is just how CLEAR the sound is. No Viper4Android and even Spotify's "high" setting sounds great. MAN this is an upgrade from the Nexus 5.

Ha HA! Howdy friendo. Yeah, this is a diesel device for audio.
Volume through headphones depends on their sensitivity, does it not?
I have too many pairs of head/earphones to list. I just wait for good prices. I don't post over at Head but so many good recommendations there cost me much coin, lol!
I'm digging the sound quality no doubting that. Anyone know what DAC is in the G3?
It does, but raw output power is what it is and the G3's isn't nearly as much as the HTC M8, but honestly with a good pair that isolates well these have plenty of volume.
I used to have more than I have now, I'm keeping it simple because once you spend $1000 on headphones it's time to re-evaluate your life.
As for the DAC, I have no idea. There was a Wolfson DAC in the G2 but apparently not in the G3, but the tests I've seen on the G3 show that it's got the clearest audio output of any android device currently so who knows what's in there.
I just use the ones that came with the phone and there alright. I have used my K701's with the phone (directly) and i get a pretty decent sound out of it, loud enough though not super loud obviously.

Good to see someone has good taste in headphones.
I have the gr07's mk1
Great sound for the moolah
My main qualm with my old Z1 was the fact that it was way too low in terms of sound volume. The G3 is definitely louder, but not quite as loud as I want it.
There is a quick fix if you're rooted though, the thread can be found here.
The LG quad beats are actually quite good fit stock headphones. They are much better than apples ear pods. I normal just use my Boise free style in ear ones because they are comfortable she have decent sound quality. I just hate how all headphones are made for apple and you can't use the volume toggles, but the center button works for Google now.

That is weird that more headphones don't come with android-capable controls. It's not like the company needs different controls for every model, and there are a LOT more Android phones out there.
So I've tried my SE846, my VModa M100, and my Final Audio Pandora, and yep. This phone sounds awesome. Every single time.
