So today I get onto the forums, and see that the fateful day has finally arrived. Jelly Bean. With Galaxy player in hand, I scour the many threads based on this topic. And then I get lost. So am I the only one having trouble with this? And to any devs reading this, maybe you could answer my questions with your magical genie powers?
1. Does the camera work that's been done on ICS transfer over to JB? Or do you have to redo stuff?
2. Can the fix for HW acceleration be ported back to ICS?
3. Does the Bluetooth patch work for JB?
4. Once one ROM is working on JB, is it easy to apply to others? (I love paranoid)
Thanks, blah, blah, blah.

1 probably not
2 possibly, I might have to try it.
3 no
4 easier, yes, but one isn't working yet.

Although we technically have jb, there are still many bugs that need to be squashed so I might consider to keep using ics for a while until its optimized!
Is the Camera patch any help at all to get the camera on JB. Cause it would be a shame to waste all the devs hard work if you know what I mean.
I would honestly rather wait for either ICS or JB to be working completely before flashing either of them.
Newer but buggy OS < Older but more stable OS
I don't know. I think I'll stick with ics just cuz of all the stuff it offers. Despite camera and hwa, it really is (in my opinions) better.

Unfortunately (as you'll find out soon once you start reading these forums) until Samsung releases ICS official for the GT10.1, we don't have camera drivers that work with ICS. So, unfortunately, the answer to your question is no, but probably will happen within a few hours of Samsung releasing ICS (whenever that is....). As far as I've heard, it's a pretty gimmicky feature anyways (doesn't work in the dark, doesn't always recognize, slow...)
BTW, if you must, go ahead and suggest that someone use the driver from HC. I'm sure nobody has thought of that yet. (Excuse the sarcasm. Every time a new person finds out that we can't use the camera without Samsung's drivers, they always suggest something simple, as if none of the devs had considered it before...).
Ah ok, waiting for 4.0 on my xperia S as well, getting sick of waiting! Haha

So. What now?
There is few - non-complete - ICS roms for the htc flyer, but nothing good enough for daily use.
We didn't even get android 4 before android 5 was out... :crying:
Drew Garen is apparently working on ICS. Maybe he should be asked to try to work on Jellybean instead?
What do you think? Will it be harder to get Jellybean? Will it ever be done?
I think you should just give it up. What makes you think we ll get 4.1,if like you said we don't even have a good ics Rom. If you realy want buy a nexus 7. It's 199 so the price is very reasonable
I'm pretty confident that Chaos is going to get his ICS build perfected with everything working, I mean, look how far he has gotten so far. I wouldn't count on DG though. Too many broken promises.
As for Jellybean. The source code isn't even released yet. Just the update for the galaxy nexus and the sdk. Sdk ports will never be as good as source builds so forget about that. When the source is released for JB I don't think it will be too hard to get an AOSP build going seeing as we already have a good ICS build. The leap wasn't as big from ICS to JB as it was from GB to ICS. So in theory, we will probably get JB (I can't speak for the other developers) sometime after the source is released.
So just sit back, be patient and keep track of any news
This is getting silly. Really! I think it is best to just cut the loses & buy something new. I think the turn around for new OS'a is shortening. I mean ICS isn't even a year old. I've learnt my lesson.
My next contract will only be 12 months. & I will dump the limping HTC brand for something else. That way I won't be disappointed.

However, I have been positively surprised with other developers before. Honestly I don't want another tablet either.

I personally want to use my device as long as the hardware is okay. (I still have my HTC hero, haha.) I think the lesson here is to buy a device that has loads of rom developers.
Anyways, thanks for all the replies!
Man everyone is obsessing over jelly bean...why? It's a minor update.. its a miracle chaos got ics running on this device, asking for jelly bean is a new monster. Id rather the focus be on getting ics perfect for the tablet than start over on a new monster. And idk about jelly beans New tablet mode, Id prefer the tablet ui that was introduced with honeycomb.
Thing is google cranks out new android versions quickly. People won't keep this tab forever, including developers. So the best possible experience that takes full advantage of the flyers hardware needs to be the goal not desperately trying to scrape together parts to get another version of android on the tab. Really I'm fine with honeycomb aside from the lag, and ioiwillio is working on that and so far so good

I think I'd rather get ICS running properly too.
Jelly Bean does not have a landscape home screen, which is weird.
The emphasis on voice and search is getting too much for me too. I feel like Jelly Bean was designed to collect information about you. It is getting too big brotherish.
It sounds great to get a Nexus 7 maybe 16g at least. I don't know if they have sdcard slot, that would awesome. The HTC EVO View still has great potential as a school tool. I take it everywhere take notes, make beats, do homework, watch movies, listen to music, text everyone and email. I hardly carry my phone to school or laptop. I think its still very functional, even the Gingerbread works fine on this device. I can even code. It's definitively not a 12 core that I treasure so much as to not carry it outside my home in sunny Southern California.
I would rather use telepathy but I'm stuck in a Dark Age.
Big Bro indeed. As much as I like Google, their goal of collecting all information is frightening. Information is power - someone with too much power is a tyrant.

AS Gumby said earlier i do not think it is too hard to do, i am not even sure it requires Kernel changes in order to get it working, i believe that it can share the same kernel as AOSP ICS, however don't quote me on this. I will have a look at this with whoever decides to develop
@Gumby you up for this ? ?

This could be fixed i believe, (Not by me) as i don't really know much about the APK's at all. But i beleive it is possible, the same code from an ICS lockscreen apk would work and also i believe a lot of the ICS APK's would work as this is not a major API level only a slight step up, however i could be incorrect.
Yeah actually the 10 inch layout for jellybean is classic honeycomb style and they've already found out on the nexus tablet its just a matter of rooting and changing the dpi

Yes. It seems like I am wrong about it anyway. There IS a landscape mode in the UI.
I am thinking about ordering one. It is a shame because the Flyer has better hardware in some respects (rear camera, SD slot, MHL support). But, Nexus 7 hardware is good enough and, most importantly, it has Google supporting it so we will surely get timely software updates for a while at least. Also, I am sure that there will be a ton of Dev activity becasue this is a Google product and will probably be at least moderately successful.
Hope the community of flyer grow stronger and stronger. Anyway it is not old enough to die, with all this, All the flyer will have a longer life:fingers-crossed:

We need a ICS kernel first, and I was pretty sure the framework changes were rather intensive.
From what I can gather, the changes between HC and ICS and hell compared to the minor update from ICS to JB. If we can get a working ICS build for the Flyer, JB will seem like a piece of cake.
Back to the UI discussion, I'm actually a fan of the layout on the Nexus 7. It's actually more of a traditional phone layout which would work much better on the Flyer if the soft keys were disabled and we could go back to the hardware keys. It would free up the bottom of the screen and give us more usable space.

I'm kinda thinking that too. Ideally what I think would be perfect for the flyer is a launcher with a honeycomb layout that auto rotates to both portrait and landscape and has no dock and the apps and search bar up top just like honeycomb. Then you have the notification bar up top, virtual keys disabled, and hardware keys enabled and bam perfect flyer layout!

Sorry I mean to post this under questions.
The devs typically wait to release new stuff to the public until it's stable enough for daily use. Maybe not completely functional, but almost there. Jellybean isn't quite there yet. Patience

In order to get Jelly Bean I believe AOSP for ICS has to be fully worked out. ICS is almost there. There's just a number of bugs that have to be fixed.
On a side note I'm really interested in seeing what Project Butter is like. Because Neo's AOSP ROM is smooth as hell by itself already.

This is great news. Thanks to both you and heyis4horses for your responses and to neo for his effort.
I haven't had good luck with 4.2. I ran it for about 18 hours, and while the BT calling and signal bars were fixed, I had scores of other issues, including choppiness, lots of force closing under heavy load, dock issues, and GPS issues (even after the GPS fix). It's still pretty broken, so don't expect miracles out of it. I'm going to be doing ROM work on it, but I'm not going to be releasing any of it until the base is in better shape.
Can someone port an ICS/JB ROM onto the Galaxy Player 4.2 (YP-GI1)? I really want to update my software, the 4.0/5.0 both have ICS on it and it would be great if my device could have it too, Thanks!

ICS porting worked chronologically:
The SGP 5.0 was the first to have working ICS ports and it took months before the Bluetooth bug was fixed.
Several months after 5.0 ports stabilized, some developers ported it to the SGP 4.0.
I suspect it worked this way, because there are a larger number of SGP 5.0 owners, hence leading to more output.
And, if my suspicions are correct, then it is going to be a very long while before the SGP 4.2/3.6 see any ports respectively, as I suspect that the number of people who own those devices is smaller yet.
It is feasible, but that would mean that a lot of our devs here who have done successful ports to the 4.0/5.0 would need their own SGP 4.2/3.6 to test their builds and ports on. And, I just don't see them spending money on an already under-supported device.
But, who knows? Crazier things have happened here on the SGP forums.
Is anyone working on this device? I have seen someone on the CyanogenMod Forums say that they have ICS on it but it's very unstable. Of course I can't believe that... But people got a root working using Odin3. If there is any developer that has this device and seeing this post, please.. reply! Thanks

Yeah but what does it upgrade?
Sent from my YP-GI1 using xda app-developers app
Being rooted is a state of existence. You can add it or take it away at your disposal. Being rooted just means that you have the Super User binaries installed on your device. You un-root by uninstalling those binaries. Flashing a ROM with or without root simply means that the ROM you flashed has or doesn't have those binaries.
So, if you flash a rooted ROM over your currently rooted ROM, that's OK. That simply means you have older or newer binaries on your device. (And, yes. You can update Super User binaries.)
there is a rooted gingerbread stock rom, but I believe the dev that made it doesn't even have a 4.2 and had to rely on others to test it, even the 4.0 has a very small number of devs on it, and half the ones we've had in the past have moved on to newer devices. I doubt there will be any ICS/JB goodness for the 4.2 simply because there are no devs that actually own one, atleast as far as users on here go, maybe some guy somewhere might be working on it but they sure aren't here.
Yeah I used that exact ROM anyway to get the rooted gingerbread ROM but thanks anyway

Okay, here I'm. I'm new to xda & this is my 1st post. We all know that our s5830 has already tasted Jelly Bean via cyanogenmod/aokp/aosp with bugs in it Of course, those developments are great but not stable It's been a dream of every user to have Jelly Bean for daily use on their ace. Maclaw started it all up first but unfortunately he's off now So the thing is development of JB for our ace on stock base or something like that but stable, bug free & fast Any dev for ace can take it as an interest/challenge & make it possible... I know it's easier said than done but yes, it has always been a dream. Additionally it would be just great if its made to look close to the stock JB by google... So here we go...
