Changed launchers and getting better battery life - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note I717

I wanted scrolling wallpaper for my Halloween live wallpaper so I installed Nova Launcher. I immediately noticed much better battery life... I got a full 24hrs and still had 15% battery left. This was with live wallpaper (which I had not used in months) with my normal usage patterns during the day.
I did a quick search but didn't find anything.. could there be something in TouchWiz that eats battery? Anyone else notice a change in battery life when going from stock to a 3rd party launcher?

What's your setup though? Stock touchwiz? Are you rooted? What launcher were you using before? Those are all key factors.

I believe TW is a memory hogger. That plays a factor to battery life.

Without some sort of control group this could just be placebo effect. There is no way to know.

If you look at the activity bar on the screen shot, the screen was on for a while.. then pretty much nothing..
If you leave your phone alone and check your email here and there they battery will last forever..
I was able to pull off 3 days on my infuse.. pretty simple.. just don't use it and the battery last longer..
On average with moderate/above normal usage (got the Note on Friday, so its been in use a good bit while I get it squared away, I get about 10 hours with about 4.5 hours screen time.. after the battery gets a few cycles through it , it should improve slightly..

Just installed Nova(BTW- wow, nice launcher. My ADW icons even work with it ) so I'll report back with my battery findings.
One thing I've noticed about wallpapers while we're on the subject- it seems like disabling scrolling increases battery life a bit. Haven't actually compared any data on this, its just something I've noticed since I always disable scrolling when I'm using a wallpaper with a strong "centerpiece".

Anyone tried ss launcher? I have been using it forms while and like it better than apex or nova.

SS Launcher is awesome. They have a great template/example forum (somewhere here on xda...) or you can check out their own blog.
It just takes a bit to learn but that's part of the fun. They seem to update it frequently.
I alternate between Nova, SS Launcher and GO. Go is very nice and it flies on my ICS. Nova is not quite as quick for me but it is really my default launcher these days because it is lighter and works very well. SS Launcher is great and I often go back to it for a few days at a time.
SO, I guess I basically alternate between SS Launcher and NOVA.

ADW. EX

Anyone running this?
I have it but I really like this new TW
I'm curious as to how smooth it is but I just can't bring myself to install it because TW is so good now.

I came from ADW.EX on my Infuse. I vowed to run the SGS2 for at least a day without ADW because of the new touchwiz.
I made it 6 hours....
Switched to free adw, running well and much more capable than stock
I went about two days on the stock home, then switched to adw.

I've been ADW. EX since it was released. I've used it on every device I've had since, and I'm using it now. No other launcher trumps its functionality imo. I just can't use anything else.
It runs beautifully on the i777 at 1600MHz.

I'm running it with cognition x2 no problems. Runs smooth.
TW needs gesture settings then it could compete... I was constantly swiping up and down in it to no avail, lol. Switched back to EX after couple days

Any else using the EX version over TW noticing slight delays no present in TW? Especially opening something from the tray.
I am a bit confused about Touch Wiz. I am running rooted Galaxy s2 777 on custom kernel and unnamed rom. Where can I get touch wiz? is it an app? I am using ADW myself but not EX, where can I get a free version of ex?
How do I install downloaded apps from my PC and put then to install on my phone?
Any help would be appreciated.
There are lots of settings for adw.ex! I love that you can tweak it beyond reason! Lol
One thing I've done tho is changed desktop scrolling speeds and desktop bounce in the settings to maximize fluid page transitions.
Touchwiz feels very smooth and a contributing factor would be the speed and bounce at which the pages turn.
So now when I change the scrolling animation to the fly in or cube, its important to tweak those speeds (faster or slower) to improve the feel of the transition.

Where? I only see a few and almost all of them are paid skins.
Sent from my MB855 using xda premium
There are more themes in Google Play than in the built-in theme selector. Maybe that's what (s)he's seeing.
This launcher is cool, but it feels rushed in a few ways. For example, why can't I configure:
Where the MX (Cover screen?) button goes
Where the app drawer icon goes, or its icon (and why isn't it themed?)
The number of docks. I just want the one.
The task killer. I can already open it by long-pressing app drawer. Yet I can't move the dedicated task killer launcher (from dock 2).
The names and colors of the folders in the app drawer. No "Games"? And what is Lifestyle anyway?
The icons on the clock. Yes, I know I can change them, but to select Music, I have to have it launch the stock Blur music app? No thanks, I like the MIUI one, TYVM. Likewise with Contacts, I can't make it open Contapps. Gallery won't open QuickPic. You see where this is going.
The home screen indicator. I'm fine with it being there when I'm changing screens, but all the time? Not feeling it.
Other than that, it is a nice launcher. When placing icons, you get the grid from GO Launcher EX. Also from GO is the home screen configuration (press Home, this lets you add or remove home screens, or move them around). From GO and ADW it has a popup when long-pressing icons; other than being more visually impressive, it adds an Info option which takes you to its page in Settings/Applications (this is good if you want to force close the app, or maybe clear its cache, or remove its defaults).
The settings are also really bare and spread out amongst some confusing labels.
This app has a couple neat ideas. The app drawer and cover screen are nice touches, but the customization is very shallow. It feels like a beta, a work in progress. I'll keep it around because this thing is just dripping with potential.

New launcher!!

ok, if your like me then your looking to replace the stock launcher on a daily basis but have yet to do so because they all run with a degree of lag. (except tw)
Well good news!
There is another launcher i found to work very well with the galaxy note and it is called "aShell" - It's based off of ADW
It has a lot of similar features....... heck.... it looks strikingly similar.... almost a clone! I found it to use less memory and it is almost lag-free (i have widgets all over the place on 6 homescreens, btw). Plus it has quite a few features that ADW doesn't have ...... oh, and use the "scatter" transition - it's pretty neat.
Anyway, give the dam thing a try!
************EDIT********
Go Launcher 2.81 is available on the market. I suggest everyone try it. I am running the V6 Supercharger 1000hp setting with Go and it's the best so far... runs almost perfect on my note... with 6 homescreens full of widgets. GIVE it a.... GO
And if it works for you, hit the "THanK" button

thanks for this....always like trying new launchers....just installed and wallpaper scrolling works on this one.
will test this for a few days.....I am a hardcore ADWEx user.
yeah, i'm sure a lot of us will be please with it. i came from go.... using adw till they optimize but then i found this lol... my only discrepancy is the app drawer. but i can live with it for now.
will def try this out......
Edit: i still noticed lag in the app drawer.
adw ex didnt have that. im using go launcher right now, just switched from Spb shell. and will give this one a full test for a couple days and see if i can get ti run smoothly for me.
thanks for posting it up, im always looking for new launchers.
likewise... the launcher is the alpha-omega of the android experience in my opinion.
I've posted feedback to the developer with regards to the app drawer - I believe the launcher is still in the alpha stages, but it has a lot of potential.
I like the different features like the dock icons... if you drag each one of them up they pull up something different... like the phone pulls up the photo contacts and such.. These guys are definitely thinking differently.
yeah, some cool features.....
does it support vertical app drawer scrolling? I didn't see it. But I am at work so I am looking quickly and trying to be productive.

I thought android apps came with a 15 minute return policy? You could always try it and request for a refund.
Although, I don't see this particular launcher in my market, I can see it on market.android.com but not on my phone.
I think nemus is smoother and the dock can scroll to allow more apps in the dock and the app drawer will loop screens

Trials are pointless because you can download the cracked app or crack the app and install it (like SPB Crack) for free.
I have done this with apps like widget locker, but when i found myself using them all the time i purchased it. That's my way of weeding out the bull$hit... "create-a-trial" lol

This launcher was first released mid-december 2011 - it's still developing.
I haven't tried nemus.... (might install and give it a go)
didn't like nemus....I am a launcher whore and I usually try them out as soon as I see them.
I'm not paying 17 bucks for something I can only test drive for less than 30 minutes. How the h*ll are you suppose to evaluate it in 15 minutes? Maybe if you are hopped up on speed, redbull or something, but most people can't evaluate it
in 15 minutes.
I don't go for cracked software, but I might just to see how it works for a day or two. If I like it, I'll buy it, but most likely it will end up being removed and forgotten.

Cm9/aokp themes effecting battery life?

I'm running the liquid smooth 1.5 rom and for a while I used the stock system theme and then decided to switch to the cobalt theme, and since the switch it seems like my battery is dying a little faster...can a theme effect your battery life or is it just me? And I know dark themes use less then brighter ones but cobalt is a pretty dark theme..
also I'm using the nexus soft keys because I got a skin for my phone and now I can't see the other keys...would the soft keys effect battery life?
Sent from my XT912 using xda app-developers app
So since no one felt the need to help me in my quest to solar these problems, I took things into my own hands..
OK so i tested this with the Cobalt theme..
With this theme because it is a very big (and by big I mean full and has themed everything and even more) you will definitely notice a little bit of lag with it comes to swiping thru pages or your app drawer..and when closing out of apps.
Also, you will notice your battery dying a little faster..
I haven't tested any simpler themes, but I definitely will and will let you guys know..

Micro stuttering when scrolling through home screens normal?

Hey guys, I just got my S3 (I9300) 2 weeks ago and I love it. Very fast. But the thing that concerns me is that sometimes when I'm scrolling through home screens in touchwiz i see micro stutters in the transitions (like semi-lag but not fully lag, hopefully you guys know what I mean).
Is this normal?
I'm a little worried..
I am on the LF2 firmware. Completely stock, haven't rooted or installed any custom ROMS.
Is it the redraw? Theres a fix for that
Or the wallpaper scrolling? Fix for that too

Yes on TW, you can not do much about this. there SOME sammy roms Foxhound is one with the right kernel that got rid of the micro stutter on TW

Never noticed any stutter on the home screen scrolling I'm using stock LFB rom with speedmod kernel.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda app-developers app
From my experience, every Android phone I have ever owned has had some degree of micro stuttering, and it has always bugged me. It's also interesting, because some people claim not to be able to perceive any stuttering, while others do, so it seems to be a very subjective matter.
I'm very happy to say, however, that the experimental builds of Jelly Bean have finally stopped 95% of this issue for me. I'm hopeful that once Samsung releases official Jelly Bean binaries we will see the remaining 5% gone too, but either way, I believe it is already smoother than any iOS device out there, which has generally been my baseline.
Edit: Changing launchers does help, but only on the home screen and app draw.
If you are using a live wallpaper try to change it as some LW are laggy.
Also try to check the services that are running in your background through setting-application manager. Maybe you have too many background processes
And lastly wait for jellybean update as this will make the UI interface super smooth cause by project butter of Google

It's no JUST TW. There is still some stuttering, even running CM9. Yes, the amount of stuttering is reduced, but the root cause is still at the heart of Android (pre JB anyway).

Agreed, but the launcher is such a small aspect of the phone that it usually just annoyed me more, as it proved the hardware was capable, but that Android itself was slow!
Anyway, "project butter" has totally changed the experience, and will be a big draw card to iPhone users who were hesitant to switch in the past
Thank you all for your help!!
