Hi all.....I have the Gal W and my wife has an S2. I recently rooted my phone and flashed CM9 to it. Everything I've done to my phone, I've done without Odin (just couldn't get it to work).
My wife has seen how my phone operates (nova launcher, lack of bloatware etc) and has decided she wants the same for her phone....I'd like to do this for her but I WILL NOT use Odin. Is there any other option to allow me to accomplish this.....btw if it's important, her S2 is locked to 3UK and originally came with gingerbread (has had OTA upgrade to ICS).
So to surmise...
I need a rooting zip that I can flash with stock recovery
And info about CWM for S2 for possible custom rom flashing......all WITHOUT Odin......many thanks...Keith

OK, so I followed the instructions in the link, installed the zips and......
It worked, but the root is non persistent....not permanent....can anybody tell me how to obtain permanent root without resorting to ODIN?.....
CM9...I don't HAVE to.....I just.....can..
How can u said the root wasn't permanent by? Is there a superuser app in the apps drawer? Or any app didn't get permitted?

Simple way to root and unroot stock kernel without flashing insecure kernel.
Don't worry about custom counter and yellow triangle, with this method they never appear, because we only rooting, it's a rooting script not a custom kernel.
This rooting script included Busybox installer.
Rooting
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard or external SD
Choose and Install SU-Busybox-Installer.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Rooted
Unroot
Download this File first and put in your SDCARD
- CWM via stock recovery or download zip from http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager
- SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
Reboot to recovery.
Choose apply update from external storage.
Choose CWM.zip and wait until CWM recovery appear.
Choose install zip from sdcard
Choose and Install SU-Uninstaller-Signed.zip
Reboot
You are done and now your device is Unrooted
Tested on latest stock Galaxy S II ICS rom.
Tested on latest Galaxy Note by some user (thanks for report)
Note: This method should work for other device with ICS rom, check CWM that compatible for your device here http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager

@Adam....the cwm installed fine and I was able to use it to install busy box and super user, but when I rebooted the phone and tried to set up busybox, it told me I didn't have root access. I rebooted the phone into recovery and the CWM screen had been replaced with the stock recovery screen. I guess this method can be used to grant super user permissions while in recovery but not in normal boot mode.....

Hi mate, I asked her about that and she said that it took her long enough to 'like' ICS after the update from GB. What she wants, is for me to get rid of the bloatware (Gemini app manager) Install a root only launcher (nova), apply a root only theme on top of that (crimson cobalt) and stop the popup ads (adaway)....while keeping it all ICS based. So all I need is root access that doesn't disappear in normal boot mode.......
CM9...I don't HAVE to.....I just.....can..
If so then d/l & flash dorimanx kernel
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1617219
It'll takes about 7mb & 2 mnts if u have a good connection. Root will be included.

Now I guess I need to get on with that learning curve ahead of me, on terms & procedures like:
- backup (& most important, restore) phone;s data
- How to boot to recovery
- Format 'under mounts & storage'
- Reboot to dl mode
- CWM recovery

Hi Jokesy
It looks like I finally got around to this upgrade! (about frigging time huh?)
I am liking this one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1659654
In that page the developer has his own instructions on how to go about the upgrade:
If you don't already have CWM, You have to install it before install the rom. (As CFROOT).
Download the latest Criskelo ROM and put it on your INTERN SD card.
Open your CWM Application, select flash Update, and select the rom zip.
Say "yes", your rom will be installed.
Enjoy !

Hi, as I tapped ‘Flash ClockworkMod Recovery' in ROM Manager, a pop-up instructs me so:
Samsung galaxy S2 (GT-i9100) does not have an officially supported ClockworkMod Recovery yet.
Have you installed a ClockworkMod based recovery manually?
YES - NO
I select no and that's that...
Is there a work around to this since I do not know if I have installed a CWM based recovery manually?
OK, ignore my previous post, I got to flash a ROM (the one I pointed out in a link in previous post ie :
ROM◥███◣ CriskeloServanTeam V12) with the CWM method, however when I reboot from CWM again, it hangs.
I am assuming I am done when it tells me that flashing from zip is done, I rebooted via the menu of CWM and the phone starts to reboot but it hangs with something like this on the screen for ever (more than 40 minutes now!) :
Any ideas?

After a lot of trial and error and a lot of getting used to the idea that I might just destroy a 500€ phone <sigh> I finally managed to flash my phone.
The majority of the problems were sourced in a faulty microSD card which would allow the flashing process to complete correctly!
Once I loaded the ROMs onto a different microSD, ALL of the ROMs worked perfectly!
I am currently running THUNDER BOLT ROM VERSION 4 that Al Hussein + Arindam Sahan have created (could do without the Xperia stuff though).
Thanks again for all your support Jokesy, theunderling and Paulius7
Glad to see that you managed to fix things up and not brick your new phone
There are loads of ROM's and KERNEL's available and you will be spending the first few months flashing your phone daily, trust me, been there done that xD.
Also, the sad part is that a lot of devs have purchased the Galaxy S III now and there is not as much action going on as it used to 6 months ago
QuickTip: Try keeping your .zip (ROMS/KERNELS/MODS/whatever) on the internal storage. Its much safer in case of a bug or something. Also try having an up to date backup on you pc to
Hello guys I’m here with a noob guide for who are very new to Rooting and how to install a new ROM on SGS2,
But this guide after rooting process will be same to flash the Custom ROM on other devices as well.
Rooting of GB devices
I'm not responsible for any harm to your device in this process, you are doing it on your own risk. By doing this you're voiding warranty of your product.
2.3.3/2.3.6 User should have to take a look on Chainfire's CFRoot method. However 2.3.3 can be rooted through recovery but 2.3.6 can't be without CFRoot method.
Needed tool for rooting GB
PC
Samsung USB drivers
Odin3
CFRooted stock kernel
Instructions-
Follow these instructions to the letter. Do not touch any buttons or checkboxes that are not listed below to touch!
Unzip the attached CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.zip
(USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
Start ODIN
Click the PDA button, and select CF-Root-xxx-vX.X.tar
Put your phone in download mode
(USB) Connect the phone to your computer
Make sure repartition is NOT checked
Click the START button
Wait for the phone to reboot
Done
Now you have rooted phone with custom recovery. Thanks to @Chainfire for his awesome work.
Rooting of ICS
So for rooting the SGS2 we have a lots of guides but there is the much safe way to root it flashing the script via Stock recovery. So Philz has overcome to this problem with his awesome Kernel and with this thread named [ICS/JB]Universal Rooting for most phones, Any ROM, now with CWM6.
Instructions-
Copy the Root_XXX.zip file you downloaded to externalsd card
Boot into stock recovery (volume up+home+power), and select "apply update from external storage". Now select the Root_XXX.zip file downloaded above and you are rooted
To unroot, do the above steps and replace the file Root_XXX.zip by the attached Unroot_SuperUser-Busybox-Uninstaller-Update2-signed.zip. It will delete superuser, su and busybox packages.
Download links-
Root_SuperSU.0.98-Busybox.1.20.2-signed.zip
Unroot_SuperUser-Busybox-Uninstaller-Update2-signed.zip
Thanks to @Phil3759 for his awesome thread. Now you need custom kernels which should have the custom recovery, for that you can use DorimanX or Siyah kernel which are brickbug free.
Or you can just download the PhilzKernelCWM.zip with your matched code or at least similar kernel code and put it on your external SD card and then reboot into recovery by Holding the three combo key (Volumeup + Home + Power) and then choose option “Install Update zip” and choose the PhilzCWM.zip and flash it. After flashing done, you have rooted your Phone successfully with SuperSU installed. Now reboot to the recovery again and backup your ROM.
For JB release rootingJust flash the philz kernel from the stock recovery and you are rooted.
Now time to Backup your current ROM before flashing the new Custom ROM on your device, it is recommended in case when something happen bad. If you are running 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 then the backup process is very simple just reboot into recovery and then touch the Backup option and that’s all, your all apps, contacts, sms and data will be backed up by default, and this backup will be placed on external sd card in Clockworkmod/Backup path by default.
But if you are running JB 4.1.2 then the backup job is not easy on all recovery’s. There is an extra folder called Preload is very important one where your all system apps have been placed, which is not included in simple backup process. So the drill starts here…..Reboot into recovery select option “Backup and Restore”
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now select the option “Advance Backup and Restore”
Now select the “Custom Backup Job”. There you have tick the “Preload” folder and then scroll down and “Start custom Backup job” And then it will ask where you want to store the backup on you “Intenal/External Stroage”. After selecting the storage path it will start the backup process. When it finished you are ready to install the new ROM.
Note: If you don’t want to do this manually then I recommend the Apolo kernel which can backup the Preload by default no need of custom backup
NOTE: Before doing the below steps, backup your all apps and data using “Helium” or “Go backup” from play store to restore them on your newly flashed ROM. As after wipe data/reset you will lost all your contacts, Sms’s, and app and their data.
Now select the option “Wipe Data/ Factory reset” and then choose the second option “Clean to Install a New ROM”.
Note: I’ve seen this option in Philz only which is for Samsung only, non Samsung users have to select the first option and then follow these steps:
Wipe cache
Advanced/Wipe Dalvik cache
Now Select the option “Install Zip” and choose your zip from either Internal SD card or External SD Card wherever you have put the downloaded ROM zip file and flash it. Let’s finish the process and now reboot your system, it will take about 5-10 Min on first boot so don’t panic.
My credit and thanks

3 things to mention:
1. There's no Philz kernel for GB ROMs.
2. They will end up with Superuser, not SuperSu
3. I think after ticking preload in Custom backup job, it is a good idea to Save Philz settings because it needs to stay ticked for restoring backup with preload included as well.

Do i need to install custom recovery like other phones or unlock boot loader to install custom roms?
So ur guide means,
1- install kernel via phone's current stock recovery
2- back up current stock rom "apparently ics for me"
3- place new custom rom zip i got from forum on sd card
4- go to restore factory and format
5- open phone's based recovery mode and choose install zip from sd? And flash rom
That's it? If yes, do i need to reinstall zip kernel to get root again?

If you are on ICS then download the philz kernel and flash it under stock recovery, if possible see if there is the philz available for your firmware. Read the Philz thread carefully.
Place the zip of rom on your sd you got from forum.
After flashing the philz your phone is rooted and you have custom recovery.
Just reboot to recovery again and you will see it.
When you will backup it will backup your current kernel and recovery automatically which would be philz.
If your phone is not locked by any carrier then you don't need to unlock its bootloader its already unlocked.
Do a factory reset from the recovery not from the phone.
Wipe cache and then under Advanced wipe dalvik cache, strongly recommended to not get the bootloop.
Now flash the ROM zip and reboot the phone after completing the flash of zip.
Note: Please read the OP carefully how can you get back your apps and data.
If still have any doubt just ask me without any hesitation. Good luck.

If you will install a custom ROM like CM, JellyBam, SlimBean(aosp/aokp based), Or my favourite NeatRom(Sammy based custom rom) you don't need to root them again they are all rooted.
After flashing any of these ROM your current kernel will be overwrite by these ROM's default kernel which comes with CWM 6.+. So no need to install the custom recovery again.
And you can't install a ROM with stock recovery you need a custom recovery. If I'm not clear you can ask any time.
It's much much better, I was going to send you a PM about GB root but now it's done, great job mate, really great

Dear all mega 5.8 member, since shabbypenguin (thank you so much) had make CWM for our device, i think maybe we should ask XDA to give us a different thread instead of mix with mega 6.3 thread.... sorry for the poor English

Many thanks for this. I recall some exchanges in this forum when someone said their would "never" be a Recovery for the I9152. I told him never to say "never". You proved me right. Many thanks once again (I have clicked the "Thanks" button).
There is nothing called "never" in the android world. Just needs the correct knowledge

stop extracting the image file.
i submitted my device tree to have CWM made officially, dees_troy has made a test build of twrp and should have that done official in a few days. that means you can flash CWM via rom manager, twrp via goo manager. and enjoy all 3 kinds of recovery

I got some issue here. I deodex stock rom with kitchen, but when i try install the zip its failed. Status 0. Anything i can do to fix the problem.
Hello,
I'll try to reboot into recovery but it starts normally.
When I try to shutdown the Z2 and boot (typing VOL UP) into recovery, it is always booting normally. So what can I do or how can I fix this? (i cannot post in the general thread of the rom because I'm new here.
The rom works perfectly, all fine.
Just added the xposed module "GravityBox", works fine too.
But I cannot boot into recovery..
Oh sh*t I saw it now on the top, no questions in general, I'm sorry!..
Please post questions in the Q&A section

I think you have to reinstall recovery
Im not sure if existenz supports recovery for locked bootloader
Hey!
I've an unlocked bootloader. I've first flashed CWM with fastboot before I installed the Rom.
Is there an official boot.img what I can flash in fastboot so I've got my recovery back without losing intern data?

you can use flashtool, (flashtool.net)
you will need a FTF which can be found at teh top of the general section, just exclude all of them exept kernel, that way you can get the stock kernel back
Hey there!
I don't want stock rom, I could do it if I want.
I'm just wondering about the eXistenZ Rom, am I the only one without a working recovery after flashing?
I just want my CWM recovery back between the eXistenZ Rom.
Thanks.

Install cwm again how you installed before, as said i dont think existenz supports your recovery method hence it wont be there after installing which means you would need to reinstall
If you installed via fastboot then this is fairly odd as it shouldent of happened

But with the same method as before it won't work again (first via fastboot then install zip in cwm)..
So I think, I'll try to do a backup in any way and install cwm again like before.
Damn I don't want to reflash.. I spent to much work in the settings, design and system.
Crap, so no other possible way for a solution?? :banghead:

If you have a unlocked bootloader you can install advanced stock kernel or doomkernel
And reflashing the rom or flashing across stock based roms you dont need to wipe data

Ah yeah you're right, I don't have to wipe data!
I've created a nandroid backup with the nandroid online app.
The app fails with backing up /boot and /recovery path :

this is not part of my question, open a new question thread for that.
@Envious_Data:
Problem solved, just erased boot and reflashed CWM boot.img with fastboot, my Xperia Z2 is booting without problems, LED turns pink on Sony logo and is booting eXistenZ , no data loss. Yeha! Thank you for your support.

Device Added Odin
Click the PDA button in ODIN and load the CWM-recovery-s5310-ODIN.tar.md5 file from your desktop
Leave everything else in ODIN as it is. Check screenshot below for confirmation
image:
ODIN Setup
Double-check everything in ODIN and click the Start button to start flashing the CWM recovery image on to your device
Once the flashing is complete, you should see a Green PASS message at the top left in ODIN. It is now safe to disconnect your phone. CWM Recovery has been flashed on your device
Power off your phone.
Reboot to CWM Recovery. To do so press and hold the Volume Up + Home + Power buttons together. Release them when you see the CWM screen. In CWM mode, use the Volume Up/Down keys to scroll and the Power or Home key to select an option
Select Install zip from SD card, and on the next screen select Choose Zip from SD card
You should now see a bunch of folders and files. These are the contents of your internal SD card. Locate the Root_Superuser_3.1.3_Busybox_1.20.2-Update1-signed.zip file you copied over earlier and select it with the Power button
image:
CWM Recovery Flashing Steps
On the next screen, select Yes to confirm the flash
Wait for CWM to flash the root package
Once done, Go Back to the main menu and select Reboot System Now
After your phone has booted up fully, open the App drawer and look for the SuperSU app.
Congratulations!! Your Galaxy Pocket Neo now has full root access as well as the custom CWM Recovery installed!
Enjoy your rooted device. Cheers!!

Rooting the Samsung Galaxy Pocket Neo with a Macintosh
Thanks for this walkthrough.
I was very excited to rid my phone of all the pre-loaded bloatware and prepared to root it.
However, I couldn't get past the "load up Odin" stage in the above instructions. This is because Odin is PC only.
Does anyone know how I can root my phone using Macintosh? Ideally, I would prefer not to run bootcamp or parallels.
I downloaded Heimdall, but wasn't able to find instructions.
Can someone helpful please give me a walkthrough on how to root my Samsung Galaxy Pocket Neo with a Macintosh?
KINGO ROOT worked for me, install kingo on you pc , connect you phone and click root
