Atrix headphone jack - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

EDIT: My headphone jack has been borked since I got it, and I'm still not sure what's wrong with it.
PROBLEM: Headphones won't go all the way in, so it won't play out of the left earbud. (tried all headphones)
Here's some pics from what I could get.
http://imgur.com/doXIP
http://imgur.com/dD5In&N09hs
http://imgur.com/dD5In&N09hs#1
I even sanded down the tip of a garbage pair of headphones, so it was shorter than standard ones, this time it seemed to go all the way in, yet still no audio out of the left earbud.
WHAT YOU CAN DO: Please, somebody suggest a fix for this, and compare the pics of my jack - to your headphone jack and tell me if anything seems wrong with mine. Thanks.

Believe it or not, but I've tried this! Thanks for the help though (no sarcasm this time)

It is set this way to allow for large cases.

I don't understand what you mean? It won't let me plug it in deep enough into the port. How does this have anything to do with large cases? I've even tried it with no case...

If you bought it used then you might be having the problem I have on occasion. If it was kept in a pants pocket or a messy purse, you probably have lint or some other debris down in the jack. Get a toothpick and a small flashlight and see if you can fish it out.

Sounds like you have a damaged headphone jack on your phone.

Ok thanks guys, but a picture would really help of a working jack.

I am using a iPhone 3GS handsfree with my Atrix 4G. 100% compatible and full jack is inserted into the headphone socket. Great sound quality with working mic and call accept/end button.

How does this have anything to do with fixing the port?

As you wish.
Two different headphones, one with angle plug, one with flat plug.
Back and front.
With and without the case.
Both plugs are inserted fully and working flawlessly.
Sorry for somewhat crappy pictures. Bad lighting here.

I had issues with headphones not working properly a while ago. I cleaned it a little bit and it worked. Apparently this issue is quite common with the atrix.
Hope that helps

Thanks but I was hoping for the inside of the port. Thanks!

i've had some issues too with headphone. Sometimes when i plug it in, it may not works.
I have to unplug it and to plug it again.
My connector does not fully insert too, but i can't push it more and it works correctly this way... most of the time.

Could someone please post pics?

I've already checked with a flashlight and there doesn't appear to be any lint or anything like that. No matter how hard I press, it doesn't go in any further.

I had the same problem. Disassembled everything several times, no oxidation, nothing in the plug.
You can see a small black round puck at the bottom of the inside of the jack. My assumption is that it swells with heat.
My correction you ask?
Removed the battery, used an electronic drill with a 1/8ths bit and reduced the puck size. I did this with the phone assembled because the jack is tapered on the bottom if you take it out, won't sit flat.
Just make sure it goes in straight.
Hope that helps!

Just use glue.
Via My HTC Evo 3D On The Now Network From Sprint.
By the looks of that screenshot, you've been taking your back cover off incorrectly, or rather not as "gently" as you should be.
The back case flexes if you pull at it from the bottom and up like peeling a bannana...and when it flexes, it will bend the metal camera frame ring. Thus that red metal ring can/dent/bend and will start to bow and then the tension will cause it to naturally pull away and pop off like you've displayed.
I might suggest removing the ring entirely and trying to bend/straighten it as gently as possible, so that it will want to stay straight and flush, before gluing it back on.
When I am removing the back cover, pop off an end first, usually I do the bottom (since there's the thumb tab, opposite the head phone jack),
then I gently tug at the side with the usb, to pop out the tabs working my way towards the headphone jack,
then I gently push the bottom left corner of the back cover towards the headphone jack, so that it helps pop off and out around the headphone jack as I lift the panel from up from the USB side.
Ultimately I try to remove my backcover without flexing the backcover or flexing it as little as possible especially near the red ring.

Go to your local Sprint store and ask if they have any replacement back covers. i Took mines over to them and they said it is a defective issue in some? I don't know if it is true but they gave me one for free

I am stopping by the Sprint Store this afternoon to get a replacement back today. Was just wondering if this was a common issue or not. Thanks for the replies.
@CYDVicious
You are correct, I am bad at just taking the back off by just the bottom and really bending the case, guess I was used to the original 4G back which was so much easier to take off.
Thanks all
Never happened to me and I got mine right after launch. I always wanted to take it off to paint it or just sand it down. Even tried prying it from the inside with no luck. Is it glued on or does it have another method of attachment? Tried painting it but the edges looked sloppy and it covered up the holes which muffled the already weak speaker. Ended up scraping the paint off before it fully cured.

Looks to be just some sort of glue. But it seems to be very thin aluminum that bends extremely easy and probably hard to get back into the correct shape if bent too much. Wouldn't recommend prying it off, unless you can get it off with heat.
mine is starting to come off as well. im hoping for some other issues so i can get a whole new refurb unit

Be careful what wire you pick for S-OFF

I didn't realize that the wire I was using was a little sharp on one end. As you can see, this can do bad things to the PCB.

My phone is rebooting the instant I touch the wire to ground, so I don't know if I am going to be able to do the wire trick. )= We shall see.
I ended up taking the back case off of my phone so I could have better access. It does make it a little easier:
Good catch. This should be kept at the top for people to see. How hard was the wire you used?
What wire did you use?
I tried a clipped old cat5 cable but found it too flimsy. Switched to a plain small paperclip and was successful.

It was a 22awg jumper wire. I guess I had clipped it at some point so it formed a sharp tip. The wire itself is fairly soft even.
My hands shake a bunch so just the sharp tip and trying to keep a firm connection was probably all it took.
Just plane old speaker wire worked for me. (For people who look at this later)
I took a plastic ended wall tack wrapped some speaker wire tight for the pin 1 hole then did the same for other end to tap the ground. Pretty precise for me looks good on the pcb over here

Yep. That's what I used. A paperclip, and wrapped it in clear tape from a desk dispenser so I didn't have any static electricity.
IF anyone does happen to be as clumsy as me you will be happy to know that you can lift up the motherboard and there is a large pad on the bottom you can use instead of the tiny dot.
I found that a small piece of coax cable works well.

How do you destroy a PCB with a little wire?

I kind of gathered from the main thread that it's supposed to do that, and that they want the second contact 1.75 seconds into the reboot.
How hard were you pressing on that wire, anyway? I would think it took a little time and effort to do this damage.

How hard were you pushing? Even with a sharpened point, you would still have to push pretty hard to scrape like that.
A 6 inch piece of household stranded speaker wire worked great for me. Fits into pin 1 hole kind of tight and is easier to hit the contact.

Lol. Not very hard. It wouldn't have been a problem if it wasn't.
Actually, I was just looking at it some more and I am starting to think it was already like that before I did anything. I just tried to purposefully scratch another spot and I couldn't do it.
I used a paperclip myself. Only problem I had at first was keeping contact with the first connection before hitting the ground. Found a bigger paper clip with less wiggle and problem solved.

What do you mean? Having access to S-Off no means we can put our phones back into a "Locked" status that now doesn't show you tampered with it. Meaning you should be able to return your phone and even if they check to see if you unlocked it they won't be able to tell.

Crack from headphone port.

Anyone else have a crack in their bezel running from the headphone jack to the screen border? I use headphones on this phone about every day so I'm not surprised the plastic cracked since it seems like any kind of force from the headphones could put pressure on that area where it is thin so close to the ear piece speaker.
Interesting thing tho is my friend has the same issue but rarely ever uses headphones. Also keeps the phone cased where I never have a case. Both phones have never been dropped either. I'm guessing it's a flaw in the design on that area, just wondered if anyone else has the issue?
I'll try to post a pic later btw

I've got the same problem here. I don't use the headphones excessively, so it can't be from overuse.
I have the exact same crack on my phone. It's barely noticeable and runs from the headphone jack to the edge of the headset speaker. I use bluetooth headphones almost exclusively, so I'm sure it's not from overuse of the jack on my phone.

Lol it will most likely get worse. That's how mine started, then it traveled to the edge of the screen. Now one side sits higher than the other and you can feel the crack when running your finger over it
Sent from my Incredible 4G LTE using Tapatalk 2
I too have a crack starting from the front of the headphone jack, and it heads to the left side of the front speaker. It is not very noticeable, though. I had been using a wired patch cord from the phone to my car's aux in port, and I have used wired headphones with the phone in my front pocket, so I figured the crack started from that use. However, I rarely use jack since starting to use wireless bluetooth headphones, and a wireless bluetooth connection in the car.

Give it time and you will. My wife and I both have this phone and we both have the crack. Definitely a flaw in the design.
I too have experienced the crack. My brother has this phone and he pointed it out to me just recently. Definitely could be a design flaw maybe this is a region where too much stress is getting applied. I thought it might have been his case- too tight. It a trident I belive. He does use headphones alot so that is adding to the wear. I carefully superglued it so not to cause any obstruction to the port or be obtrusive to the look of the exterior. I figure it will help prevemnt the crack from getting worse or even break off. Did not expect anyone really to have this exact same problem, even so many.

I ordered one of these things from a different site too.
Only after I ordered did I realise that it probably won't play nice with a case, unlike the DK30 which has the removable insert.
I think the other port could be a pass through. It looks like it takes a micro USB input and has a USB output port.

one thing is it takes some effort for the phone to be plugged in right, doesnt seem to fit tight into the charger , out of 10 tries i got it to charge once
Yeah.. I was disappointed when the dock arrived today. The problem is that the magnetic connector isn't secured. It keeps moving around. I broke 1 of the 2 clips holding the magnetic connector while I was playing around with it. However I found a solution.... I just super glued the entire fitting under the insert together so it doesn't move around. Then put the insert back. Now it doesn't move and I get a secure connection each time.

bummer - was hoping it was going to be better. I guess for the price and after the superglue fix its ok. Can't really justify paying $50 for the official DX30.
btw did you work out what the USB port on the back does?
I agree I cannot justify $50 either. But it's not bad after the fix. I have not played around with the USB port yet.

my wife was able to get it to stick by keeping a paper sheet behind the phone while sticking it in the dock
Just thought I'd share a bit in case anyone's wondering what's inside here.
I tore mine apart cause I was curious why I was only reading 0.5V on the terminals (Phone wouldn't connect after trying numerous times) So I decided to see what was inside.
The four screws on the back are under the rubber feet, and it appears all of them were stripped out at the factory due to metal shavings all over the adhesive on the backs of the pads, and the lack of a proper slot on the head.
After removing those, it appears that the connector sits on a hinge piece inside to allow it to move up and down while accommodating the phone in the slot. Unfortunately, the connector attaches with a slot and couple clips, which are fairly weak. On the plus side, there is a rounded holder on the back itself which keeps the plug from being forced too far down inside (hopefully)
The circuit board is very simple, and comes out with 3 screws, one hidden under the rubber square on the board.
There really isn't much there, it appears that the USB port is simply to power a second device. I tested it and power is indeed coming out of that port. I tested it with my laptop and it does not appear that it passes data through that port to the microUSB, so it is a power-only connector. There is also a small fuse on the board.
I reassembled my unit and it has the proper voltage on the terminals, perhaps a loose connection somewhere inside the connector was to blame. It works but does require accurate alignment, no throwing the phone on the dock and expecting it to charge, which is fairly inconvenient. The idea of the mag connector is to be faster and easier than popping a door open and plugging USB in, but here it takes me just as long. Maybe removing the surrounds on the power pins would help, but that would expose it to shorts, so not sure how good of an idea that is.
Anyway, for $14, it works, and seems to charge. If you need a dock, and you don't have the money for the Sony official, this one gets the job done, mostly.

It's not a little switch. Open the usb port cover, swing it round and push the plastic spike into the "little switch" hole.
Wish they had done the same for the headphone jack cover

Wow I never new what that was for!!!
I just wished the tablet had wireless charging in some form, I'm waiting for the day the little flap covering the USB port snaps off killing the waterproof aspect and ruining the look of it

What do you think those gold-plated pads at the left side are for?

At least you don't have to open any flaps or connect any wires.
What's the difference between placing your tablet on a "wireless" charging pad or in a cradle anyway?
A cradle looks much nicer and neater. Inductive charging wastes a part of the energy, generates more heat and is generally slower.

With wireless charger you may use any case, with dock only original one or of the same construction (type). Energy waste is not substantial in this case, a lot of people plug in tablet for a charge overnight, it doesn't matter that it will take 1 hour more, because you can partially compensate it by using more powerfull charger (e.g. from Ipad or samsung 2,1A work well) instead of original 1,5A which chargers forever even in craddle).
