My Xperia S sometime have this hated problem.
After an observation period I've noticed that:
1) Is not a temperature problem (put it in the freezer for half hour when yellow ghost appeared, it remain)
2) The yellow ghost appear only when use some USB charger or when I connect it to my PC (dell e6420).
Conclusion:
Perhaps the yellow ghost is caused by a over tension, under charge.
Some other ideas?
On my phone it also randomly pops up, but mostly when I'm using a lot of apps, or set the CPU to overclock or performance mode so it also has to do with temperature

The yellow ghost screen is affected by the screen temperature.. If ur fone is overclocked, the yellow screen will keep on poping up. If u can troubleshoot, flashing a stock rom would be a nice kdea to see kf the yellow screen reappears.
Reappearing means u have a hardware failure..
{Helpful, thank me}

Mine is not over clocked and yesterday when appeared the yellow ghost, to verify if the cause of it was the temperature, I've put my XPS in to the freezer for an half hour and then... when the phone was at -20 the yellow ghost was there
Perfect display here. (3 months)
And a friend have one 100% fine too.
why would you put your phone in a freezer? thats going to mess up your screen even more

It must be able to operate at -10DegC without fault, perhaps -20 is a bit extreme for it
It is a heat problem. Its the glue around the screen heating and melting. Freezing won't make it go away. Some people are lucky and it evaporates away, some it just dries and sticks there.
It was apparently only an issue on the first batch of handsets and Sony recognised the issue and offered free replacement handsets to anyone with the problem. ( i had it and got mine replaced for free)

My phone seems to have an issue where in cold weather or an air con room strange grey and white lines flicker across the bottom centimeter or so of the screen, distorting the image. Even in just mildly chilly weather (around 26 degrees celsius) I get this issue. However if I heat the phone up by playing a graphic intensive game or the like, they go away. Anybody else have this problem?

Nah, I'm pretty chill, and it was amusing, plus I'm happy for the bump.
Anyway, new question - can somebody recommend some overvolting/overclocking settings that I can use to make my phone hot? Because as it is now even at room temp I get those lines, I'm not too sure anymore that heating things up will get rid of them, but it's worth a shot.

I suggest a warranty replacement. Who wants their phone to have to stay constantly heated. Not sure how much to over volt to for the i777 but I use no frills app for clock work on my tab

Sadly that's not an option as I bought it used (but mint) and unlocked (where I live phones don't come with contracts, so you shell out about 700$ for a new high end phone). It worked fine for the first month, then things went weird a week ago...no idea what the problem could be. I ordered a new battery and am flashing back to stock to see if it's a software issue, but I doubt either of those will solve it.

Seems unlikely, as even in recovery, etc I get those lines - and screenshots show up perfectly fine, with no artifacts that would indicate a problem with the gpu.

I too agree. Although it is completely different, I got the same thing on my Xbox 360. Checkerboard/white and black lines are indicators of a bad gpu. I have since stopped using it but it will eventually lead to the red ring.

If it was the GPU is should show up in a screenshot, no? Anyway, I'll try to get a technician to have a look at it and see if he can do anything.
It's really weird though how the problem disappears once the temperature reaches 40 degrees celsius. I really can't figure this thing out.

hey I have the same issue on my phone.Grey horizontal lines appeared on the screen. Only 1/3 of my phone screen is in normal condition without grey lines. When I used my phone at the outdoor approximately under 6 deg celcius, 2/3 of my phone screen were then covered by dark screen!!! However, when i go to a warmer place and restart my phone few times then it had gone better condition yet the grey lines still appear there. May I know have you solved your phone screen issue?? Your help will be greatly appreciated.
As said before, GPU. My old Xbox did the same thing but if I put a heater behind it it would be fine. Sounds like the soldering is bad to be honest.

Unfortunately I have not been able to solve it, at this point heat no longer matters. Whether the phone is hot or cold I still get about the same amount of grey lines. You can try to take it in to get checked for faulty screen or gpu, but where I live the repairshop didn't have the necessary parts.

Sorry for posting on this old thread, but I have the same problem, did you find a fix?
Hello
Does anyone get a white screen of death crash that looks like:
1. Phone freezes
2. White horizontal stripes fade in on the screen, covering it.
3. A few blue, red, green (or any other colour) dots are seen randomly.
4. After a while, phone will remain at white screen.
The only fix is to reboot, but it happens quite a lot.
Also, the phone heats up too much sometimes. Anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks!

This is a known probpem to overheating devices with gpu. As device overheats, thw gpu may start to malfunction, causing the problems you have. But your device is also faulty, so i recommend you send it to official service.

I suppose it can't be faulty, since I just got it a few months ago. How do I prevent the overheat? I noticed that when it gets too hot this might happen, as there was once when I tried turning it on repeatedly after it was too hot, the white screen of death appeared almost as soon as it turned on.

Overheating is very dangerous, and it may damaged your SOC caused your issues. And if your battery is exposed to loads of heat constantly, it may explode. You may start to have dead pixels, failed hardware... So yea.. That's why i always check that out before buying a phone
Its getting more and more often. My XZU screen goes crazy randomly. Crazy means.....like multiple presses on the phone are happening at the same time and apps are starting without pressing, even the homescreen goes crazy and goes into edit mode and the crazy ness is so crazy that I cannot even turn off the phone because the moment I hold down the power button and it shows the power off window, it immediately goes off. I cannot go to the apps I want because random ads are all going off at the same time. This whackyness normally goes away when I reboot the phone....however, I discovered today that after rebooting the symptoms came back immediately. I had to reboot twice more in order to get the phone back working properly.

you could change the sensitivity of the screen.
There is a file that you can edit.
navigate to system/usr/idc "max1187x_touchscreen_0"
If you edit this in a notepad app or root explorer... then find the code:
touch.filter.level = 2
and change it to 4 or maybe 6.. to make it more sensitive..
- or 1 to make it less sensative

I also have this problem. It's mostly because there is water (even very small amount, like sweaty fingers) on the screen. Just wipe the screen and make it dry.
Also for some people(like me) the problem only happens on a certain area of the screen. That area of the original film on the screen is damaged, and water on that part of the film just won't go off. You can try washing you phone with tap water, and you can see that water will stay on the defective part of the screen forming a small water pool, and clean and dry(maybe some water bead) on the rest part of the screen.
I've sent back my phone to sony for repair. Hopefully they can replace the original film. If not I guess I'll go for another screen protector.

Yeah, that's the oleophobic coat coming off in certain areas. Mine's come off in the lower left corner, but that doesn't bother me since i can't see it unless i hold a flashlight over it.

how I wish I came to XDA earlier.. I just googled "oleophobic coating" and found out that I can repair that myself, at very low cost(about the same as the shipping cost to send it for repair...)
Well at least if sony sent it back unrepaired I can still do it myself. Just one month without my precious won't kill me (thinking positively!)

If the screen is not all white then you have LCD problem.

Sounds like you're having the same problem as me. You only have a single line though, while 2/3 of my display is like this. Mine gets like this whenever it's a little under room temperature, and it's a hardware defect according to Sony.
Post some pictures though. It could be software related (if you're lucky).

My XZU has this 1x1 cms 'purple cloud' at top mid center of screen all the time. I see it at the phone boot animation also. Its not captured on screen. So I guess its an LCD burn mark
Its visible only at medium and high brightness on a black background. Not on white background.

Just checked out your video, and i'm having this issue too. That's called "ghosting", and that means that the response time of the screen has gone to hell. The issue gets triggered on mine when the temperature drops a little.
Try this:
- Is it functioning normally in room temperature? If yes, put the phone in your refrigerator for 2-3 minutes and see if it's still functioning properly. If not, well.. then you're having the same issue as me, and i've talked to Sony, and it's a hardware defect and you'll have to use your warrenty and get a new screen. I sent mine in for repairs today, so i'm crossing my fingers.
IF you decide to send it in for repairs, remember to call them and ask them to do whatever triggers the issue, or else they'll simply re-flash the firmware and call it a day. That's what happened to me the first time, and you don't want that to happen

Alright, so it's the same issues as i have, and it's a production error according to Sony, so you'll have to send it in for repair. This is strangly enough only the second case where this happens, that i've read or heard about (including my own Ultra), so it doesn't seem to be that big of an issue. It could simply be an issue on a batch of Ultras that we got. It's a really strange defect though.
Alright, so I got my Ultra back yesterday with a new screen, and the problem is solved. I tested it by leaving it in my refrigerator for about 5 minutes, and there were no signs of slowdowns or other defects, so that's the way to go

Hi guys,
I took my Go out for a swim and after my swim, the screen started to flicker and eventually the screen died(yes, all the flaps were closed, I double checked). Now this was last month, and I did the whole rice bag thing, and still no improvement :3 But occasionally the screen comes back to life when I tap on it and then dies again.. And last week, I just happened to switch on the phone and it started working like nothing ever happened! And yesterday it stopped working again I took it to the Sony store and they say that it might take about 400RM(120USD) to fix it.. Is there anything that I can do to fix this??
Try to have it tested for water resistance, if a machine test shows leaks even after cleaning the caps it's not your fault (at least if $ony follows their service manuals to the letter)
You can open the screws up in the back and manually troubleshoot what is up with it. Check it for any water or moisture on the inside or any damage from it. Good luck

Did you switch it off the instant it got wet. Using the internally wet phone could damage the main board which could be causing the problems.
Or the screen could have been screwed up...

I did switch it off after the screen started flickering :/.. I opened her up today and theres a a little of rust on one of the connectors that lead from the screen to the board..
Well there you go. Youre gonna have to get new parts or fix the old ones.
Try removing the rust from the connector, then fully drying the insides and see if the screen turns on if you moove the connector around. Also check ebay for the price of a new screen. It might be cheaper then you think.
