[Q] Missing Anything Without Sense? - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hey guys.
Does anyone know if using an AOSP rom, you loose out on any features, such as hardware camera processing or others by not being on a Sense-based ROM?
Thanks,
Da

You will lose anything related to sense. Widgets, camera software, profile & prl update capabilities, etc.

I would say you definitely lose out on overall stability and also some features. First and foremost you may experience LOS (loss of signal) which can be really crippling and just make the phone unusable. Also, most AOSP seem to have a problem either sending or receiving MMS. Not to mention you can't update profile and prl.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

It's a matter of opinion HTC does not open source their software, and they wait till the last minute to release kernel sources, as for prl and profile you can't update them via an aosp Rom. But a quick flash or restore to sense and you can as for stability I'd say aosp or stock.
You may miss HTC's applications such as friend stream and others but you can easily find a variant for it.

Thanks for the replies.
Understood with the prl update stuff.
I run custom prls atm so I can roam on 3g when desired.
I was mainly asking because I heard there is a processing chip that enables the instant photo shoots, or something similar. Wanted to know definitively if sense drivers were needed for this hardware based functionality and if there was any other loss of hardware features.

As far as I can tell image sense is basically postprocessing but I could be wrong. The libs for image sense were ported to cmx some time ago, not sure about other aosp roms

You win some and you lose some. Multitasking is ornamental in AOSP an fast as hell, but the imagesense hardware and software are unbeatable on sense. I'm running viper4g right now with only the complaint that even the new multitasking "fixes" aren't 100%

Source on this?

What i miss is the overall integration of my social networks. While you can get apps that help you do it, in sense its already there and works seamlessly. I can see their Facebook and twitter statuses as they call me. But i cant in AOSP from what i have seen. How ever... I like how fast AOSP is, only thing that keeps me away is the sense camera ( its so damn fast ) and the signal stability issue. Once time i walked outside of my workplace and i had signal, just not data. and it stayed that way for about 5 minutes. never happens in sense

Is your ROM stable enough?

To go 2+ days without freezing and/or randomly rebooting?
Lol huh? I don't have this problem ever...
So far:
Deck ROM: yes, could go weeks without rebooting.
CleanROM: yes, only had it about 2 days but no problems
Synergy: no, tried every kernel and it wouldnt go more than about 12 hours without a hard crash.
About all I've tried at length

My personal ROM has actually never needed a reboot or crashed.
Via My HTC Evo 3D On The Now Network From Sprint.
Every ROM I've ran except some of myn's nightlies were completely stable.
Synergy - very stable
Cyanogenmod - seems to be the stablest
InfectedROM - Kind of stable
Myn's 2.3 - Not really stable, but these are experimental nightly builds we have
If it reboots randomly and freezes a lot, there is most likely too many apps running or similar stuff that is causing that. I use my phone heavily and have never experienced reboots/freezes/shutoffs.
Steelh never had an issue works for days before reboot just to clean up
Gotcha, nice replies guys.
I refuse to run ROMs with several broken things, aside from AOSP, which is understandable.
Cm7 on airplane mode. No service so im good with wifi. 3D movies. ONLY reboot I ever had was adding 2000 songs to my sdcard. Phone couldnt handle it for 10 minutes. Then it scanned properly and good to go again.

Basically, the reason I'm asking is because virtually every single frequently updated Sense ROM in the development section is full of issues people are having. I'm trying to understand why they are so popular if they are riddled with issues every other update. Do people not enjoy stable phones? I've been running the same ROM since July and to this day there isn't a single 'new' feature that has been implemented in ROMs these days that I don't want. If there happens to be one, it doesn't need a full flash.
My question is: Why are so many people using Sense ROMs that have nothing but issues and stuff that doesn't work properly? Since HTC has already provided a fairly solid foundation with the Stock ROM, how are so many Sense ROMs broken?
If the answer is aesthetics and looks, why not take a stable ROM, and work from there to get the look you want?
I'm also trying to understand the mind of a "Flashaholic" and besides AOSP or MIUI, there doesn't seem to be enough differences between these Sense ROMs other than kernels and random fiddling with the framework that really differentiate them. For a person that understands how ROMs work and can easily determine the core differences between them, I can tell you exactly what differences that ROM A has from ROM B, and yet, the user opinion is much wider.
Take for instance ROM A, which has a cute tagline in its title and is made by a 'veteran' so to speak. The changelog and file-by-file difference between that and ROM B, made by a seemingly unknown person are pretty small, but the audience seems to think ROM A is much more 'stable' and 'fast' than ROM B.
Aside from messing with the framework, I have done side-by-side comparisons of where most of the ROMs features claim to shine--its tweaks to memory, ram usage, cpu, kernel, etc; which reside mostly in the /system/etc folder and under build.prop and the differences are so small and most of the tweaks are identical. With that said, framework 'tweaks' make a minimal difference in every day situations and most phones will perform almost identical to the Stock ROM. The real differences lie in random build.prop tweaks and init.d scripts which mostly come from poorly documented sites and sources that were meant for Desktop computers and/or older phones like the G1 and can actually have a negative effect on our current phone's performance. I'm sure HTC has done enough research that their method of ROM delivery is probably optimal for most people.
At any rate, I'm interested in more discussion from the people in this thread.
Id like to try your dualcore mod with 1st core at 700mhz and 2nd core at 500mhz. Can you make the file for me? But is it possible to get a screen off profile with it?
Whooo! (Cole Voice...)
I have flashed before due to aesthetics but now I'm on a hunt for a smoother (stutter free) rom. I also like having extra settings that some offer like synergys, and Eternity, and having beats is a plus although not necessary. The closest I've gotten is Eternity 1.3.1 w/stock look along with Tiamat sense 1.0.3 kernel and flashable script by Smokin. Smokins script made a difference in smoothness for me specially in the app drawer. The only issue that plagues my phone is intermittent black screen during calls.
Other reason I flash is sometimes I get tired of things and want something new to play with. Makes me feel I have a new device.

That I can understand, but with the differences between Sense ROMs being so small, why? I suppose looks is a good enough reason as any, especially if you don't know how or feel like trying to extract the apks or images needed to make your current ROM look like the ROM you're installing.

Senseless I get way better 4g coverage than any other ROM I've tried. With others my 4g would go on and off every 3-4 minutes. It really bugged me out.

I flash roms to have wireless tether mainly. Recently i like using sprint hotspot and it ia easier to flash a modified stock rom instead of tracking down the flashable hack. Other than staying up to date with software without breaking root, i dont see a reason not to be stock rooted. I buy htc for sense so aosp roms just arent for me. Im running infected eternity 1.4.1 and love the themed look just because it seperatea me from the rest if the world, if i wanted to fit a mold i would be rocking that girly iphone.

First time I've heard anyone claim synergy is stable. Even the synergy devs have given up trying to get non stock kernels to run reliably with it and have recommended limping along by flashing the stock kernel over the included one until the ROM can be fixed.
As to why so many problems: I think half of it is kernel compatibility and half is in the baking. Some bake in the latest version of this or that apk that hasn't been thoroughly tested. Market 3.2 is a good example. Doesn't work: can't buy paid apps. Same problems occur with other apps like all the borked superuser updates between 3.0.2 and 3.0.6. So with all the pushing to include the latest versions of every low level app baked into the ROM, of course there will be some mismatches.
Not a fan of AOSP ROMs. Most of those don't have 20% of the stuff working like 4g, 3d camera, and other stuff. Most say right at the top, "dont expect this to work... Or that to work". No thanks.

Your Dream Custom Rom

If u could make a Rom for EVO LTE exactly how u wanted what would u include? I'm talking straight features, not theming and all that
although it is cool.
My Rom would obviously have the apple patent restored off top just to say fu to apple. I'd also have a fix for multitasking and keep sense (happen to like sense) if I could. It may be too hard to fix the multitasking without doing away with sense 4.
And what else, let's see.... Minimal OS to limit the amount of RAM used up like sense 4/ics does. U also have to do away with bloatware like Facebook, Twitter, google plus etc. and the like. If u want it u can dwnld it later right?
I'd also have a modified auto brightness setting that uses less backlight to save more juice. Also make it so that when u disable a process it actually disables. Same goes for the WiFi options not doing what they say they do and are flat broke.
Viperboy is known to come out with some awesome mods/roms. I'd like to improve 3g speeds if possible similar to what he's made before on earlier androids. Also a SBC kernel. I know that won't work on sense, but maybe one day.
Would make both the sd and ext sd accessible by computer and selecting disk drive.
I guess overall I really want a stable Rom that pushes the EVO to its limits but keeps good battery life. I've flashed countless roms that are very cool on paper, but they crash a lot. And I hate reloads/reboots more than anything.
So, what's your ideal Rom? Be interesting to see what devs would say to this. Who knows, maybe your ideas will be used to make a new Rom!

Nope ..there's no way that the LTE will ever pick up at wimax signal..its hardware related ..WiMAX and LTE are different 4g tech's requiring different radios..and like said b4 a aosp Rom with sense widgets and camera make me drool..wonder if its possible..that would be sick
Tested out viper Rom some before I took my 1st LTE EVO back for bricking NFC. Liked it quite a bit. Haven't rooted my exchange yet. Kinda scared to mess around with google wallet anymore, well, when rooted anyways.
There's no big hurry for me to root at the moment, although a cm9 Rom with sense widgets would probably push me over the edge, again, lol.
Treat this phone like such a baby when I treated the og EVO like a faithful dog. Always knew it would snap back. More worried with this silly secure element crap. Wouldn't be so much if it hadn't happened to me.

cm10 is very nice...multitask works perfectly...battery life is awesome
HTC EVO LTE
Cm10, paranoid and aokp are the only jb roms that I know of at the moment. All are pretty stable and lots of people are using them as daily drivers. There are still a few issues like phone force closing on boot, flaky mms and weak proximity sensor (there's a separate flash that fixes) but on the whole they are fully functional. Some have reported cell and gps signal issues but everyone's setup is different...YMMV, I suggest giving them all a shot to see which one you like best. Cm10 seems to be the favorite right now, but paranoid has some pretty cool display tweaks. If you're coming from sense and you're s-on with hboot 1.15 or later, make sure to read up on flashing the kernel separately with fastboot.

Im a completely NOOB when it comes to rooting because I have never done it before, so everything you said might as well be chinese, lol, but no worries, once I pick a ROM, I ll do extensive research on everything you just told me.
My main concern though: My wife's Galaxy SIII sends over track and album art info to our Prius Nav display perfectly. Also, the "reading SMS outloud" feature only works with her phone, and not mine. Will flashing to one of these ROMs add this functionality to my phone? I have heard that the main issue is the version of AVRCP bluetooth profile that HTC uses in sense and also the bluetooth stacks library that Sense uses. I had heard that CM fixed this, but im not sure. And what about the SMS reading thing? what determines that?
Read my guide. It has a lot of info

Ok guys so I have been reading on the thread you guys recommended, and i still havent pulled the trigger on rooting. I do have a few questions:
-One of the main things I noticed is, if I get CM10, I lose the awesome camera the EVO has. Im assuming if I get a rooted sense based ROM, I would still keep my awesome camera?
-One of the main reasons I am rooting is because I have heard CM10 has a better bluetooth stack built in, and as such it should work much better with my car, sending over track and album artist, as well as the ablity to browse music files via bluetooth through my nav screen. Or at the very least, I want to be able to get back the USB plug in functionality I used to have on the EVO 3D. When i plug in my Evo LTE in my car's USB, nothing happens. So, is there a ROM that allows me to keep the sense camera but also has the bluetooth/USB host capabilities I am looking for?
-When I root, does everything get wiped out and I have to reinstall all my apps, contacts, etc?
I'm on CM10 for the past month and am really liking it. Since I was also disappointed by the camera app I went ahead and tried the Jelly Bean 4.2 camera, and it works wonderfully. It's not 100% as awesome as HTCs, but it's enough for me. Look for the JB 4.2 apps - it's floating around somewhere.
As for BT - I don't think CM10 has APT-X, so audio quality would be lower on compatible devices. I think I notice a difference on my BT stereo headset, but it may be my imagination. Again - small price to pay for using CM10.

thanks for the reply, but I am not as concerned with audio quality as I am with my track/artist/playlist information showing up on my car's LCD Nav thing. Any ideas on what I can do to get that to happen? Does CM10 have this? And what is APT-X? What I was talking about is AVRCP. Stock sense does not have a high enough level (version) of AVRCP to do what I want. Somewhere on another thread I was told that CM does have this, but I have since been unable to confirm it.

Better is subjective, but here's my $0.02
I've been running viper since day one, and it's crazy easy to customize, which is its main claim to fame. But I've also never had any issues with bugs, reboots, or apps crashing. Literally never, not even once. It's the definition of a daily driver - everything works, it's fast, and I get great battery. It's a "set it and forget it" type of rom.
Mean seems more into the the constant tweaking and updating, and is more interested in adding the "latest and greatest" mods for the phone. It's a rom that you want to stay on top of.
From what I've seen, both roms get great support in their threads from the devs and users, but the viper crew has a reputation for being smartasses and having fun while doling out the support, so if you're the kind of guy who likes your support thread to be all business, that might come into play.
I can vouch for mean, viper and tranquility. They are all daily drivers it just depends on what suits you best. I was happy with all of them I just like trying new stuff all the time. Mean is pretty much stock with tweaks. Viper is very custumizable and tranquility is very heavily themed.

I've been on MeanROM since day one and now looking for other options. Linkifier no longer works, the smallest fonts are still entirely too large, the stock E-mail client is gimped and 5x4 Rosie still overlaps. I realize the latest HTC base broke most of that stuff while completely ignoring the flawed mail app, but that's not progress.
Now I'm wondering if there's another Sense ROM I should try or go straight to AOSP. If I do, I'll lose HTC's camera tweaks and the ability to update the PRL.
Viper4G gets my vote. Was my first Sense ROM to try and after trying all the others it suited me best. My favorite Sense ROM no doubt but like others have said its really down to personal preference.
V4G was, and still is a hella nice daily driver. I even trusted it enough to guide me through my vacation instead of my old lady's GPS and everything else. Awesome ROM.

1.) Linkify doesn't work in HTCMail. Hyperlinks are now dead in mail from 2.13.651.1 RUU and there is no easy fix. I believe this affects all up-to-date Sense ROMs
2.) Mike left the mail app alone and that's my beef with it-- it blows. The smallest font size is still entirely too large, which brings me to my next point..
3.) With a 720x1280 native resolution from an otherwise gorgeous 4.7" LCD, NO user deserves to be stuck with a 4x4 Rosie. Give me a ****ing break on the Playskool fonts, and I'm not 60 years old. I don't appreciate others reading my E-mail over my shoulder on an airplane, just because HTC gimped their software.
With Linkify crippled and the too-large font size still unresolved, I can't recommend a Sense ROM at this point. For me, MeanROM is there just to activate and update the PRL before flashing over to CM10.

I don't appreciate others reading my E-mail over my shoulder on an airplane, just because HTC gimped their software.
With Linkify crippled and the too-large font size still unresolved, I can't recommend a Sense ROM at this point. For me, MeanROM is there just to activate and update the PRL before flashing over to CM10.

and none of those are the caused by meanrom, i just dont want someone thinking the rom is not complete or something, everyone is entitled to what they want, unfortunately the email thing is bc of apple . but the 4x4 rosie i actually like better, widgets never fit perfectly on 4x5 rosie. i dunno personal opinion i guess

[Q] Vanilla does not like my Evo

I am currently running a cleaned up, senseless, meanbean running at 1.7 ghz with Arc reactor....This thing is freaking amazing. Stable and I have very few problems if any.
Vanilla roms, whether it be aosp, aokp, etc...Play music is always FC, especially when web browsing, power hungry games such as CSR or Monster blade are always force closing.
It could just be my phone, but for you guys.
When it comes to stability, power, and battery life, do you do sense, senseless, or vanilla (aosp, aokp, etc)
umm
Havent had that problem luckily. Maybe try evervolv. (Nightlies on their site)
I will give it a try
I thought that it was only me. My phone just doesn't vibe well with AOSP roms. But my problem list is much longer.

~Asking for the 'best rom' is just like asking who's the best Pokémon. When you get it, sometimes you realize that its not all that great in your opinion. Try to flash 'em all! ~
That was just to name a few. Plus now I am having MIC issues for the second time. People can only hear me when the headphones are plugged in

Right...and my speakerphone gives feedback. Too bad, though. I've seen some really sweet roms.

Same here...I love aosp but I always have problems with wifi, camera, prox sensor, mms, gps. There are work arounds and mods available to help, but it becomes a pain after a while. I decided to give sense another shot a couple days ago...I'm liking sinister lte a lot. Stable, fast and some nice sense 5 touches. Battery life seems to be about the same for me on both sense and aosp (not great thanks to tasker, skype and all around sh1tty cell reception) so it's really about using genuine htc drivers so that my hardware functions like it should.
I've tried senseless, but to me it sort of defeats the purpose. Plus I kinda like the sense launcher...

The phone worked perfectly on sense Rom. I flashed an aosp Rom and then the problem began. The Mic does not work at all, not for Google voice, calls, or even voice recorder. I flashed back to sense roms and still the problem persists.
However, when I tap the phone while voice recording, the phone picks it up, as well as background noise. Is there any suggestions? Ideas? Or possible fixes?
Just an update: I flashed a CM rom with the 3.4 kernel, and most of my issues with AOSP has disappeared. At least for the time being, it seems as though everything is running as it should.
I can now uninstall system apps using TB, which is something I couldn't do with older CM roms for some reason. Yes, I know that I could've removed them through recovery, but I didn't want to do that.
EDIT @ 6:31a: One random reboot while trying to wake the phone during a game (I turned the screen off.) Also, hanging and lag issues upon reboot. I'm still using the stock kernel.

I'm running the latest nightly from CyanogenMod and the only issue vi have is no ff camera. Since the new kernel has been included, the nightlies have been very stable for me.

Same issues so I went back to meanbean...don't know why I left aside for being a flashaholic

Camera is a must for me, the camera issues I found were too much but dirty unicorn worked well in terms of overall stability

I've been uaasing the original release of dirty unicorn since it dropped (3.0 kernel version) and it's been rock solid and packed with features.

I'm not knocking or praising any single rom. ALL of them behaved exactly the same when it came to the issues that I was having. The issue was definitely with my phone, not the roms.
On another note, I suggest that anyone who has experienced some problems with AOSP roms to try out roms built on the 3.4 kernel. My phone ABSOLUTELY responds better to it. Everything works. I no longer suffer from the problem involving the removal of system apps. No more ticks, and all of my music tracks are readable once again.
