[Q] Vanilla does not like my Evo - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

I am currently running a cleaned up, senseless, meanbean running at 1.7 ghz with Arc reactor....This thing is freaking amazing. Stable and I have very few problems if any.
Vanilla roms, whether it be aosp, aokp, etc...Play music is always FC, especially when web browsing, power hungry games such as CSR or Monster blade are always force closing.
It could just be my phone, but for you guys.
When it comes to stability, power, and battery life, do you do sense, senseless, or vanilla (aosp, aokp, etc)

umm
Havent had that problem luckily. Maybe try evervolv. (Nightlies on their site)

I will give it a try

I thought that it was only me. My phone just doesn't vibe well with AOSP roms. But my problem list is much longer.

Right...and my speakerphone gives feedback. Too bad, though. I've seen some really sweet roms.

Same here...I love aosp but I always have problems with wifi, camera, prox sensor, mms, gps. There are work arounds and mods available to help, but it becomes a pain after a while. I decided to give sense another shot a couple days ago...I'm liking sinister lte a lot. Stable, fast and some nice sense 5 touches. Battery life seems to be about the same for me on both sense and aosp (not great thanks to tasker, skype and all around sh1tty cell reception) so it's really about using genuine htc drivers so that my hardware functions like it should.
I've tried senseless, but to me it sort of defeats the purpose. Plus I kinda like the sense launcher...

The phone worked perfectly on sense Rom. I flashed an aosp Rom and then the problem began. The Mic does not work at all, not for Google voice, calls, or even voice recorder. I flashed back to sense roms and still the problem persists.
However, when I tap the phone while voice recording, the phone picks it up, as well as background noise. Is there any suggestions? Ideas? Or possible fixes?

Just an update: I flashed a CM rom with the 3.4 kernel, and most of my issues with AOSP has disappeared. At least for the time being, it seems as though everything is running as it should.
I can now uninstall system apps using TB, which is something I couldn't do with older CM roms for some reason. Yes, I know that I could've removed them through recovery, but I didn't want to do that.
EDIT @ 6:31a: One random reboot while trying to wake the phone during a game (I turned the screen off.) Also, hanging and lag issues upon reboot. I'm still using the stock kernel.

I'm not knocking or praising any single rom. ALL of them behaved exactly the same when it came to the issues that I was having. The issue was definitely with my phone, not the roms.
On another note, I suggest that anyone who has experienced some problems with AOSP roms to try out roms built on the 3.4 kernel. My phone ABSOLUTELY responds better to it. Everything works. I no longer suffer from the problem involving the removal of system apps. No more ticks, and all of my music tracks are readable once again.

Is your ROM stable enough?

To go 2+ days without freezing and/or randomly rebooting?
Lol huh? I don't have this problem ever...
So far:
Deck ROM: yes, could go weeks without rebooting.
CleanROM: yes, only had it about 2 days but no problems
Synergy: no, tried every kernel and it wouldnt go more than about 12 hours without a hard crash.
About all I've tried at length

My personal ROM has actually never needed a reboot or crashed.
Via My HTC Evo 3D On The Now Network From Sprint.
Every ROM I've ran except some of myn's nightlies were completely stable.
Synergy - very stable
Cyanogenmod - seems to be the stablest
InfectedROM - Kind of stable
Myn's 2.3 - Not really stable, but these are experimental nightly builds we have
If it reboots randomly and freezes a lot, there is most likely too many apps running or similar stuff that is causing that. I use my phone heavily and have never experienced reboots/freezes/shutoffs.
Steelh never had an issue works for days before reboot just to clean up
Gotcha, nice replies guys.
I refuse to run ROMs with several broken things, aside from AOSP, which is understandable.
Cm7 on airplane mode. No service so im good with wifi. 3D movies. ONLY reboot I ever had was adding 2000 songs to my sdcard. Phone couldnt handle it for 10 minutes. Then it scanned properly and good to go again.

Basically, the reason I'm asking is because virtually every single frequently updated Sense ROM in the development section is full of issues people are having. I'm trying to understand why they are so popular if they are riddled with issues every other update. Do people not enjoy stable phones? I've been running the same ROM since July and to this day there isn't a single 'new' feature that has been implemented in ROMs these days that I don't want. If there happens to be one, it doesn't need a full flash.
My question is: Why are so many people using Sense ROMs that have nothing but issues and stuff that doesn't work properly? Since HTC has already provided a fairly solid foundation with the Stock ROM, how are so many Sense ROMs broken?
If the answer is aesthetics and looks, why not take a stable ROM, and work from there to get the look you want?
I'm also trying to understand the mind of a "Flashaholic" and besides AOSP or MIUI, there doesn't seem to be enough differences between these Sense ROMs other than kernels and random fiddling with the framework that really differentiate them. For a person that understands how ROMs work and can easily determine the core differences between them, I can tell you exactly what differences that ROM A has from ROM B, and yet, the user opinion is much wider.
Take for instance ROM A, which has a cute tagline in its title and is made by a 'veteran' so to speak. The changelog and file-by-file difference between that and ROM B, made by a seemingly unknown person are pretty small, but the audience seems to think ROM A is much more 'stable' and 'fast' than ROM B.
Aside from messing with the framework, I have done side-by-side comparisons of where most of the ROMs features claim to shine--its tweaks to memory, ram usage, cpu, kernel, etc; which reside mostly in the /system/etc folder and under build.prop and the differences are so small and most of the tweaks are identical. With that said, framework 'tweaks' make a minimal difference in every day situations and most phones will perform almost identical to the Stock ROM. The real differences lie in random build.prop tweaks and init.d scripts which mostly come from poorly documented sites and sources that were meant for Desktop computers and/or older phones like the G1 and can actually have a negative effect on our current phone's performance. I'm sure HTC has done enough research that their method of ROM delivery is probably optimal for most people.
At any rate, I'm interested in more discussion from the people in this thread.
Id like to try your dualcore mod with 1st core at 700mhz and 2nd core at 500mhz. Can you make the file for me? But is it possible to get a screen off profile with it?
Whooo! (Cole Voice...)
I have flashed before due to aesthetics but now I'm on a hunt for a smoother (stutter free) rom. I also like having extra settings that some offer like synergys, and Eternity, and having beats is a plus although not necessary. The closest I've gotten is Eternity 1.3.1 w/stock look along with Tiamat sense 1.0.3 kernel and flashable script by Smokin. Smokins script made a difference in smoothness for me specially in the app drawer. The only issue that plagues my phone is intermittent black screen during calls.
Other reason I flash is sometimes I get tired of things and want something new to play with. Makes me feel I have a new device.

That I can understand, but with the differences between Sense ROMs being so small, why? I suppose looks is a good enough reason as any, especially if you don't know how or feel like trying to extract the apks or images needed to make your current ROM look like the ROM you're installing.

First time I've heard anyone claim synergy is stable. Even the synergy devs have given up trying to get non stock kernels to run reliably with it and have recommended limping along by flashing the stock kernel over the included one until the ROM can be fixed.
As to why so many problems: I think half of it is kernel compatibility and half is in the baking. Some bake in the latest version of this or that apk that hasn't been thoroughly tested. Market 3.2 is a good example. Doesn't work: can't buy paid apps. Same problems occur with other apps like all the borked superuser updates between 3.0.2 and 3.0.6. So with all the pushing to include the latest versions of every low level app baked into the ROM, of course there will be some mismatches.
Not a fan of AOSP ROMs. Most of those don't have 20% of the stuff working like 4g, 3d camera, and other stuff. Most say right at the top, "dont expect this to work... Or that to work". No thanks.

cm10 is very nice...multitask works perfectly...battery life is awesome

Cm10, paranoid and aokp are the only jb roms that I know of at the moment. All are pretty stable and lots of people are using them as daily drivers. There are still a few issues like phone force closing on boot, flaky mms and weak proximity sensor (there's a separate flash that fixes) but on the whole they are fully functional. Some have reported cell and gps signal issues but everyone's setup is different...YMMV, I suggest giving them all a shot to see which one you like best. Cm10 seems to be the favorite right now, but paranoid has some pretty cool display tweaks. If you're coming from sense and you're s-on with hboot 1.15 or later, make sure to read up on flashing the kernel separately with fastboot.

Im a completely NOOB when it comes to rooting because I have never done it before, so everything you said might as well be chinese, lol, but no worries, once I pick a ROM, I ll do extensive research on everything you just told me.
My main concern though: My wife's Galaxy SIII sends over track and album art info to our Prius Nav display perfectly. Also, the "reading SMS outloud" feature only works with her phone, and not mine. Will flashing to one of these ROMs add this functionality to my phone? I have heard that the main issue is the version of AVRCP bluetooth profile that HTC uses in sense and also the bluetooth stacks library that Sense uses. I had heard that CM fixed this, but im not sure. And what about the SMS reading thing? what determines that?
Read my guide. It has a lot of info
If you're new to the scene, definitely read om4's guide...it has lots of good info about rooting, flashing, etc. all in one place. Much easier than hours of searching for each topic individually...

Ok guys so I have been reading on the thread you guys recommended, and i still havent pulled the trigger on rooting. I do have a few questions:
-One of the main things I noticed is, if I get CM10, I lose the awesome camera the EVO has. Im assuming if I get a rooted sense based ROM, I would still keep my awesome camera?
-One of the main reasons I am rooting is because I have heard CM10 has a better bluetooth stack built in, and as such it should work much better with my car, sending over track and album artist, as well as the ablity to browse music files via bluetooth through my nav screen. Or at the very least, I want to be able to get back the USB plug in functionality I used to have on the EVO 3D. When i plug in my Evo LTE in my car's USB, nothing happens. So, is there a ROM that allows me to keep the sense camera but also has the bluetooth/USB host capabilities I am looking for?
-When I root, does everything get wiped out and I have to reinstall all my apps, contacts, etc?
I'm on CM10 for the past month and am really liking it. Since I was also disappointed by the camera app I went ahead and tried the Jelly Bean 4.2 camera, and it works wonderfully. It's not 100% as awesome as HTCs, but it's enough for me. Look for the JB 4.2 apps - it's floating around somewhere.
As for BT - I don't think CM10 has APT-X, so audio quality would be lower on compatible devices. I think I notice a difference on my BT stereo headset, but it may be my imagination. Again - small price to pay for using CM10.

thanks for the reply, but I am not as concerned with audio quality as I am with my track/artist/playlist information showing up on my car's LCD Nav thing. Any ideas on what I can do to get that to happen? Does CM10 have this? And what is APT-X? What I was talking about is AVRCP. Stock sense does not have a high enough level (version) of AVRCP to do what I want. Somewhere on another thread I was told that CM does have this, but I have since been unable to confirm it.

Your probably better off waiting for the official jelly bean update from HTC which *should* be in the next month or so. It might be included in that. As far as cm10 goes, you have nothing to lose by trying it to see... Just back everything up before you root and then try it to find out.

[Q] Most Stable ICS/JB Rom?

I've gone through a few roms, including CM10.1 and AOKP from th3bill. It seems like AOKP is in fact the most compatible, as every app I've tried runs (Antutu, Chrome and Bluetooth were the deal breakers of CM10.1). I've had some issues with stuttering, but I do understand that will happen with any ROM.
Any other ROMs that rival how well it works?

The most rock-solid stable ROM 4.0-4.4??

Now that I've got my ZUGPe my Note is going into semi retirement as mp3 player / cycling gps / htpc remote and I don't care so much about features and customizing as I do about stabiltiy now. I have dealt with varying degrees of instability with many many CM and AOKP variations to stay on Vanilla-ish Android. I really really really hate Touchwiz, but do I have to go back to Touchwiz to get something really stable? I'll cut you off and say maybe my phone just never agreed with CM or AOKP so even if yours is stable mine never quite got there, never more than 2-3 days without a RR or lockup, and usually several RR each day. My old Incredible on CM goes nearly a month before an issue creeps up but to be fair it doesn't get a ton of use. Neither will the Note so I just want something solid and dependable, rather than cutting-edge. Thanks for tossing your opinions at me!
You seem to be very aware that this a loaded question and knowledgable to the fact that what runs good on one, may not on another, so I will respond to this.
I am in the same boat as you and do still enjoy the Note, even though semi- retiring it.
At the moment I am swapping back and forth on 2 roms to determine which I like best. They are older roms and never had a hiccup from neither.
Rootbox and Sons of Android.
I am having trouble however. I like them both.

I too am not happy with touchwiz roms. And seemed always returning to one of pt's builds because they are for me rock solid. But TW.
I have flashed a bunch of roms, and try most any AOSP, AOCP, AOKP, CM, ... searching for a stable daily driver that works all the time.
I have been running Carbon Rom V 1.8 it's 4.2.2 and for my phone stable. Very stable. ALL my phone functions work perfectly, call quality, speaker phone, bluetooth, even my call recording app works. Camera, video, all good.
Really happy with this one. Battery life is a bit better too. If that is even possible with the i717.
I had been trying the nightly builds, and the huber kernel. But was getting an occasional lock up reboot, etc..
Had given up and went back to ol faithful Padawan.
Then found a Carbon Rom release version for our i717, Version 1.8. I did a full wipe, data, cache, and flashed it with TWRP. And the gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip.
No OC but it runs fine without it. Haven't tried the huber kernel with this version, and don't plan to.

She also has the 717, but won't let me put my dirty mitts on it That being said, without question I would put AOKP 4.4.2 on it if she finally relented. :highfive:Yes, that is a great analogy, "which ROM would I flash on my wife's phone".
Only trouble is her phone is the i317. Carbon does have a release for her phone, but she likes the Jedi X version I have on hers.
I will have to re-investigate the latest AOKP 4.4.2 . I did briefly look at it and didn't get much past the known issues. Glad he fixed them.
I appreciate the developers here, and all the time they spend working and tweaking these ROMS.
However this Carbon works great for my i717. Camcorder, camera, gallery, all working fine. Bluetooth, etc.
I have had only one complaint about speaker phone echo, and I couldn't hear it on my end. When my wife called me from her note 2. I use the speaker phone option on about 1/2 my calls.
Thank you captemo for catching the miss spelled kernel. Wouldn't want someone searching for a mis-spelled anything! :good:
I hope this thread finds it's way to others still loyal to the i717 wanting something other than TW based ROMS. Retired or not, I like everything the device has to operate, reliably.
I did DL "Sons of Android" a couple weeks ago, and the .rar files opened up into something other than a ROM. Guess that one is gone?

I thought aokp 4.4.2 and all kit kat roms had issues with the display going crazy especially related to games and lock screens. I though the camcorder doesn't work yet for aokp. I am in the same boat. My s4 died so I am back to the old note. I am going to try carbon 1.8 or sons on android, as those are the only download links I can find. Thanks for this post.

Thank you captemo for the direction of the Sons of Android files.:good:
I did DL them. My connection must have been wonky.
I had issues with the Gapps file. It must have been a bad download for me. Tried twice. Got the ROM to load up fine, but without Gapps I didn't get a good testing done. I was using TWRP.
Without an MD5 to be sure my DL was good I probably shouldn't have tried it.
So I reinstalled Carbon V1.8 from my BU.
Since my last post, I did have a FC and reboot related to my BeWeather App. I have also had issues with this App in TW based ROMs I've tried.
I don't load allot of Apps, or run many programs. And the ones I can Greenify, I do. Maybe this is why Carbon works for me?:fingers-crossed:
I reset my weather App to update manually when I use it now. I think it updating as the program opens has been the trouble.
Is there a problem with Auto-Brightness on non TW roms? My display flickers when I unlock my screen. This happened on 4.4.2 roms and 4.2.2 carbon 1.8. Is there a simple fix I am forgetting?
The auto bright setting on the non TW based ROMs I have tried have not been as smooth as TW ROMs. I set the auto function off, and set it to low.
Some of the non TW based ROMs have the slide your finger across the top of the screen to manually adjust brightness. Nice feature.
I went back to the download dropbox provided by captemo and re-downloaded the files, and got a good clean ROM and Gapps. :good:
I am using "Sons Of Android" now, and like it very much! So far so good!
Thank you, captemo :good:

what rom is your daily driver

I changed ROMs because I couldn't get hotspot working on stock. So it got me wondering what is everyone's daily driver and why and what mods did you do to make it perfect for you? I'd like to hear from others to give me and everyone more ideas.
I went with illusion ROM. Had to have hotspot. Congrats to those who could get going on stock but I couldn't for whatever reason. I keep adding apps to make it nice for me. The only 2 mods (apps) I've added are sprint zone and quick remote. Really nice for me now.
I personally love Validus, my current daily driver, I'm using Sense 7 Blinkfeed and other apps, quick remote and 777 kernel. Very fast, I think. And btw, Illusion is a great ROM as well, I heard they're going pretty much pure AOSP, sacrificing customization for stability. Bold move but I can't wait to see how it runs.

You getting feeds on BF to load with a stock based ROM? I can't on CM so I'm only using the launcher.

Im rocking stock so i can have full quality cams (at least i assume its not full quality like my old htc evo lte but never tried aosp yet)
Macho9556
Ive flashed almost every rom. Tried Blisspop and couldnt get Data, tried Illusions and was still getting that "No Sim Card" message and stock mms wouldnt work so that turned me off. I also tried Validus which I really, really liked. But I was having problems with gps, I would only get a blank screen with directions and also my bluetooth audio would start to take a di e after a while. Yes Im using Viper4android but even using that my bluetooth audio would start to diminish even when the volume was all the way up. So im trying Barepop now. No issues yet but its like having stock and I wanted something different. Any recommendations?
