For those of you who have used both of these outstanding ROMs on your MoPho, which one do you prefer and why?
Both are great ROMs. I am currently on cm7. I am really liking cm7. Its fast and battery life is outstanding. Downside to cm7 is you do need to edit build.prop to get youtube working. Also have to edit apn to get mms working. Fixes are easy to do though.

i agree with above. both are great and will wake up your photon like no other. when it was all said and done, i picked CM7 bc thats what i ran on my EVO and was just more comfortable with it. personal preference really. neither will let you down.
I'd personally go with skinnyrev1. But I've been running CM7 for a long time on my evo shift and got bored with it. But if you have never ran CM7 before on any of your devices then its worth a try. But for the photon I'd go with skinnyrev1.

Does CM7 include the 1% battery mod and is the battery life better than stock?
CM7 actually works ok now? Its by FAR my favorite (the only thing I miss from my EVO really).

I'm also running cm7, its a great, looks nice, and well its cm7 whats more to say

Really? I haven't really seen anything other than the Alpha builds. Everything works? The Evo worked great (minus 4g, but I don't live in a 4g area anyway). I can only imagine how fast it is. My Photon runs only a little faster than my CM7 evo.
Which build are you guys running?
I am loving life on my CM7 ROM. Not a big fan of Motoblur, so wanted to try something new. To be honest though...this is my only ONLY ROM that I have tried so can't offer anything new to the conversation other than I have had few problems from it. On reboot, I get a single phone.apt error that once dismissed, doesn't bother me again. The MMS issue is NOT an issue on mine...I send and receive picturemail daily and have not had any issues with that. I wish the built in buttons for the zoom on the camera app worked, but they don't...yet. Have to use the apps slider to control zoom. The Wifi is qwerky at times. I sometimes have to FORGET a known network, turn off Wifi, turn it back on...then reenter login info's to get a reconnection on a previously working wifi accesspoint that I use...but...just a minor annoyance. Considering it is still technically in alpha...it is very usable and stable...I say go for it!

I havent had any issues with wifi, got work, home, parents home, and two friends houses in college station. 5 networks total. is it the same router that you are experiencing this trouble or is it the same across all routers?
but to anyone that is in question between the two, dont base ur selection off others, its gonna boil down to your preference. its gonna be 50/50 based on reviews. best thing you can do is flash one and play around with it, then make a backup, flash the second one and see if you like it better or not. Still make a backup of the second in case you want to move back again. Thats the great thing about Android, its your choice
since you have it narrowed down between just these two, youre in a good situation. alot better then flashin all day to see what you like the best.

I've been pretty happy with SkinnyRev1 as a daily driver. I'm currently on CM7 testing the new 1.3OC. My phone hates the 1.4 kernels for some reason and on CM7, even with the modfied APN mms is very sketchy. I can send just fine but when I receive a message, that message gets repeated over and over again every couple of hours (sometimes minutes) until I get sick of it and restore my Skinny nandroid.
I've had it happen with several versions of this alpha and cannot seem to get it to stop once it happens. Deleting the thread does nothing, I just get a notification a little later that I have a new message. I've even gone from several of the yay leaked sbfs straight to CM7, skipping skinny altogether and still have the same mms issue
Well I haven't tried skinny rom but cm7 is awesome very stable been my daily driver for about 2 weeks and love it. Very smooth and fast. I had cm7 on evo 4g and needed it on this. it's very customizable (real word?) U can change lockscreen add gestures change overall color and much much more I feel like a spokesman for cm LOL but seriously give it a try u wont b disappointed

If it helps my eventual goal after i finish some other projects would be cm7 with webtop. I might start work on it tonight actually. Ive been with cm since it started on the g1. Once kinks are worked out its definitely preferred. I made skinny because we didnt have any alternatives and my friend likes blur, lol.

Well, if YOU are saying CM7 is the way to go (once the kinks are worked out) then that settles it for me. Thanks!
I am currently running a cleaned up, senseless, meanbean running at 1.7 ghz with Arc reactor....This thing is freaking amazing. Stable and I have very few problems if any.
Vanilla roms, whether it be aosp, aokp, etc...Play music is always FC, especially when web browsing, power hungry games such as CSR or Monster blade are always force closing.
It could just be my phone, but for you guys.
When it comes to stability, power, and battery life, do you do sense, senseless, or vanilla (aosp, aokp, etc)
umm
Havent had that problem luckily. Maybe try evervolv. (Nightlies on their site)
I will give it a try
I thought that it was only me. My phone just doesn't vibe well with AOSP roms. But my problem list is much longer.

Same here...I love aosp but I always have problems with wifi, camera, prox sensor, mms, gps. There are work arounds and mods available to help, but it becomes a pain after a while. I decided to give sense another shot a couple days ago...I'm liking sinister lte a lot. Stable, fast and some nice sense 5 touches. Battery life seems to be about the same for me on both sense and aosp (not great thanks to tasker, skype and all around sh1tty cell reception) so it's really about using genuine htc drivers so that my hardware functions like it should.
I've tried senseless, but to me it sort of defeats the purpose. Plus I kinda like the sense launcher...
Sent from my EVO LTE
The phone worked perfectly on sense Rom. I flashed an aosp Rom and then the problem began. The Mic does not work at all, not for Google voice, calls, or even voice recorder. I flashed back to sense roms and still the problem persists.
However, when I tap the phone while voice recording, the phone picks it up, as well as background noise. Is there any suggestions? Ideas? Or possible fixes?
Just an update: I flashed a CM rom with the 3.4 kernel, and most of my issues with AOSP has disappeared. At least for the time being, it seems as though everything is running as it should.
I can now uninstall system apps using TB, which is something I couldn't do with older CM roms for some reason. Yes, I know that I could've removed them through recovery, but I didn't want to do that.
EDIT @ 6:31a: One random reboot while trying to wake the phone during a game (I turned the screen off.) Also, hanging and lag issues upon reboot. I'm still using the stock kernel.

I'm not knocking or praising any single rom. ALL of them behaved exactly the same when it came to the issues that I was having. The issue was definitely with my phone, not the roms.
On another note, I suggest that anyone who has experienced some problems with AOSP roms to try out roms built on the 3.4 kernel. My phone ABSOLUTELY responds better to it. Everything works. I no longer suffer from the problem involving the removal of system apps. No more ticks, and all of my music tracks are readable once again.

Hey guys, I just got a Smart Dock for my i605. Got it for half off so I figured, why not? I'm running PAC-Man Rom and having a few issues. I'm beginning to think I need Touch Wiz to take full advantage, but I thought I'd ask.
1. When I put it in the dock, if the phone is fully booted into the rom, the phone will freeze and require a battery pull. However, if you reboot and wait for it to boot and then sit on the dock there is no issue.
2. I cannot get HDMI out to work, just gives a blank screen and says no media detected. Wife's S4 works so I know the dock is good.
Does anyone have suggestions or should I just dual boot TW and AOSP? Haven't tried OTG , yet, so I don't know if that works or not.
Thanks got any help!
OTG works on AOSP but the dock doesn't fully work yet, there was a request to the AOSP devs, like sbrissen, to try and add docking support but AFAIK it hasn't been added yet.
To get full use out of your dock like you want you'll have to be on TW.

Don't take this the wrong way.....
But is using the dock that important? I mean you only got it cause it was half off so you had lived without it before..... I personally wouldn't up and switch back to TW or dual boot just for a dock if I was happy with AOSP.
The only real feature the dock offers that I would use would be the HDMI, I certainly would leave it beside my bed with the screen on line an alarm clock cause our phone is prone to screen burn.
I guess what I'm getting at is if the only reason you're considering dual booting or going back to TW is for the dock then that isn't the best reason, if you're unhappy on AOSP then sure I could see it.

No I love AOSP. It's the way Android is meant to be experienced. I just would like to use the HDMI in the bedroom to stream video. Also, it's nice to just throw it on the dock and charge it, but if you forget to reboot the phone, you have a froze device.
You are absolutely right, I got it as some what of a novelty item. I don't need it, but wouldn't mind some of the features it offers.

I prefer TW ROMS for the extra features and love the smart dock now that I have everything dialed. To each, his own though. Most TW ROMS are pretty close to AOSP, worth just enough TW to keep everything working. Definitely worth at least trying out if you already have one.

The TW Roms I have tried, and I've tried the vast majority, are nowhere close to AOSP. Running a theme isn't the same thing and having a few little tweaks that change the DPI definitely isn't close to PAs settings.
Each to their own with what they like but TWs features are definitely not worth staying for me, the only thing I ever used was the Spen and I can get back almost all the features, and then some that weren't there, with an app.

For me, TW camera, smart dock and smart stay are easily enough to get me to stay on a TW based ROM. Beans did a great job on his ROM. Theming or not, I rarely miss anything from AOSP. Plus everything works! BEANS with Apex/Nova and I guarantee MOST people wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
But hey, here's to having choices, right? OP can always nandroid back to his current rom, should he hate it.

The TW camera is the only thing that I ever miss, however there are plenty of camera apps that one could use that are as good or better. For instance Camera FV-5.
As for Smart Stay, I honestly never used it because it never worked right for me. There are still other ways to get that back with apps that add similar functionality.
Like I said earlier the dock is nice, I don't own one but I have used one, but the only real awesome feature is HDMI. The rest are nothing special and can be accomplished in far better ways with other apps.
I disagree about Nova or Apex, TW goes far far beyond a launcher and pervades everything about the ROM. There are AOSP features, like per app DPI, that can be hacked onto a TW ROM but never work as well if they work at all.
There are certainly advantages to having a TW ROM but for some of us they aren't enough, perhaps when we get the 4.2.2 update and there are new features it may be good enough reason to go back.
Either way my comments were directed towards the OP who stated he preferred AOSP to TW, each of us prefer our own flavor of android and for me and the OP that's AOSP. If you love AOSP and dislike or hate TW you need to think long and hard before going back to TW for one feature that you've lived without, one that is a novelty for most of us like the Spen.

I run multiple AOSP ROMS on my N7 and N10 and have been on multiple devices over the years and while I do love them, I really find them unusable on My Note 2 and Note 10.1. A lot of the reasons that I bought these devices are somewhat dependent on TW.
Personally, I feel like our devs have done a GREAT job of giving us ROMS that have the speed, battery life and customization of AOSP based ROMS (sure, not all), while keeping all of the functions that some of us like about TW.
OP was asking for opinions and i gave him mine. It also didn't seem like he had even tried out any of the TW ROMS yet, otherwise he would have a working dock. I also stated that he can always nandroid back to his current ROM if he hates it and all would be good. I mean, he already has the dock. Might as well see if it's something that would be worth switching.
Most of us here are crack flashers anyway, so it's just like trying another ROM. If you like it, keep it. If not, flash another.
Cheers!

I'm sure the OP has tried TW Roms, maybe not the latest but most of us flashed multiple before we went to AOSP.
While I agree the devs have done a great job there are some things that only work properly or perfectly on AOSP. And I don't know which Roms you have tried but Vanilla Rootbox has been perfectly stable for me, the only issue on the latest update is acore force closes but that issue wasn't there on 6-28, some of the Roms are rough but not all.
And a lot of us bought the phone for TW features and then found ways to implement the ones that matter in AOSP. I personally can stand how badly TW is bloated no matter what the devs do.
And while its easy to go back to a nandroid its always easier to stay on your setup that's working perfectly unless there is an excellent reason to switch.

Oh yeah, I've tried them out. I actually flash every Beans that gets released. I guess part of me wants to love TW, or the features it entails. I kinda liked that Minitab thing that was going on, but just too laggy.
I don't know, maybe my gnex wrecked me, but I just love the simplicity and efficiency that AOSP is.
And thanks everyone, I enjoy the comments and suggestions.

My same exact feeling for TW, I want to like it but no matter what it always turns out to be a bloated mess.... And then we have beautiful AOSP with its built in from the ground up mods that work seamlessly without having to install Xposed frameworks or having to hack the ROM apart and piece it back together. There is just something about AOSP.
Now if we could only find a Dev willing to port the TW framework for use like has been done on a few other Sammy phones! Then we'd have the best of both worlds.

Now that I've got my ZUGPe my Note is going into semi retirement as mp3 player / cycling gps / htpc remote and I don't care so much about features and customizing as I do about stabiltiy now. I have dealt with varying degrees of instability with many many CM and AOKP variations to stay on Vanilla-ish Android. I really really really hate Touchwiz, but do I have to go back to Touchwiz to get something really stable? I'll cut you off and say maybe my phone just never agreed with CM or AOKP so even if yours is stable mine never quite got there, never more than 2-3 days without a RR or lockup, and usually several RR each day. My old Incredible on CM goes nearly a month before an issue creeps up but to be fair it doesn't get a ton of use. Neither will the Note so I just want something solid and dependable, rather than cutting-edge. Thanks for tossing your opinions at me!
You seem to be very aware that this a loaded question and knowledgable to the fact that what runs good on one, may not on another, so I will respond to this.
I am in the same boat as you and do still enjoy the Note, even though semi- retiring it.
At the moment I am swapping back and forth on 2 roms to determine which I like best. They are older roms and never had a hiccup from neither.
Rootbox and Sons of Android.
I am having trouble however. I like them both.

Carbonrom V 1.8
I too am not happy with touchwiz roms. And seemed always returning to one of pt's builds because they are for me rock solid. But TW.
I have flashed a bunch of roms, and try most any AOSP, AOCP, AOKP, CM, ... searching for a stable daily driver that works all the time.
I have been running Carbon Rom V 1.8 it's 4.2.2 and for my phone stable. Very stable. ALL my phone functions work perfectly, call quality, speaker phone, bluetooth, even my call recording app works. Camera, video, all good.
Really happy with this one. Battery life is a bit better too. If that is even possible with the i717.
I had been trying the nightly builds, and the huber kernel. But was getting an occasional lock up reboot, etc..
Had given up and went back to ol faithful Padawan.
Then found a Carbon Rom release version for our i717, Version 1.8. I did a full wipe, data, cache, and flashed it with TWRP. And the gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip.
No OC but it runs fine without it. Haven't tried the huber kernel with this version, and don't plan to.

She also has the 717, but won't let me put my dirty mitts on it That being said, without question I would put AOKP 4.4.2 on it if she finally relented. One of the most stable I have run, and blownfuze said he has no intention of giving up his note anytime soon. Which means we will get support for a while on that one.

:highfive:Yes, that is a great analogy, "which ROM would I flash on my wife's phone".
Only trouble is her phone is the i317. Carbon does have a release for her phone, but she likes the Jedi X version I have on hers.
I will have to re-investigate the latest AOKP 4.4.2 . I did briefly look at it and didn't get much past the known issues. Glad he fixed them.
I appreciate the developers here, and all the time they spend working and tweaking these ROMS.
However this Carbon works great for my i717. Camcorder, camera, gallery, all working fine. Bluetooth, etc.
I have had only one complaint about speaker phone echo, and I couldn't hear it on my end. When my wife called me from her note 2. I use the speaker phone option on about 1/2 my calls.
Thank you captemo for catching the miss spelled kernel. Wouldn't want someone searching for a mis-spelled anything! :good:
I hope this thread finds it's way to others still loyal to the i717 wanting something other than TW based ROMS. Retired or not, I like everything the device has to operate, reliably.
I did DL "Sons of Android" a couple weeks ago, and the .rar files opened up into something other than a ROM. Guess that one is gone?

I just posted link the other day and gapps for it too

I thought aokp 4.4.2 and all kit kat roms had issues with the display going crazy especially related to games and lock screens. I though the camcorder doesn't work yet for aokp. I am in the same boat. My s4 died so I am back to the old note. I am going to try carbon 1.8 or sons on android, as those are the only download links I can find. Thanks for this post.
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Thank you captemo for the direction of the Sons of Android files.:good:
I did DL them. My connection must have been wonky.
I had issues with the Gapps file. It must have been a bad download for me. Tried twice. Got the ROM to load up fine, but without Gapps I didn't get a good testing done. I was using TWRP.
Without an MD5 to be sure my DL was good I probably shouldn't have tried it.
So I reinstalled Carbon V1.8 from my BU.
Since my last post, I did have a FC and reboot related to my BeWeather App. I have also had issues with this App in TW based ROMs I've tried.
I don't load allot of Apps, or run many programs. And the ones I can Greenify, I do. Maybe this is why Carbon works for me?:fingers-crossed:
I reset my weather App to update manually when I use it now. I think it updating as the program opens has been the trouble.
Is there a problem with Auto-Brightness on non TW roms? My display flickers when I unlock my screen. This happened on 4.4.2 roms and 4.2.2 carbon 1.8. Is there a simple fix I am forgetting?
The auto bright setting on the non TW based ROMs I have tried have not been as smooth as TW ROMs. I set the auto function off, and set it to low.
Some of the non TW based ROMs have the slide your finger across the top of the screen to manually adjust brightness. Nice feature.
I went back to the download dropbox provided by captemo and re-downloaded the files, and got a good clean ROM and Gapps. :good:
I am using "Sons Of Android" now, and like it very much! So far so good!
Thank you, captemo :good:
I have been jumping between a few ROMs for a period of time now and finally decided to stick with one which I think is stable, fast and gives the best battery life by far. I admit I haven't tried all of the ROMs out there, also people have different set ups and use their phone differently. So please take what I say as a recommendation only, and I mainly wish to share some of my experience as I know how frustrating it can be to choose a ROM out of so many choices. At the end I also want to share the MODs I have been using and how I have personalized my device, hopefully will help someone out there.
Note: I didn't use the same MOD for all ROMs! See more explanation below.
ROM
Just to make it clear, I wipe all before flashing a new ROM. I don't use any kind of backup software, yes that is right I don't, call me insane But the result of poor battery life or restart/FC should not be caused by these factors. I also install about the same app back (give a take a couple which I don't use often) after a flash. I also use the same set up for all my ROMs e.g. Auto brightness, screen on time and etc.
STOCK
I have been on stock LG G2 ROM for about 5 months I think, there are some nice features and I have to say it is probably the most stable ROM out there.
But for me, I experienced a bit of lag here and there.
I think many out there will agree with me, when I say the ROM doesn't have the best UI design. I would recommend installing Xposed Installer (xda) and G2 Xposed (play store) and make some modifications yourself.
The battery is ok, last a day for me and ends up with 30% on a good day (often below 15%).
The biggest feature for me is the knock code to unlock device, I do miss it.
I didn't compare but the Camera app is better than Google Camera (opinion, didn't test).
CloudyG3 v1.3
Used this ROM for about a month, stable enough for daily driver.
Some lags when using the phone in general. Animation slow down is the main reason I decided to go with another ROM.
UI looks much nicer than G2 since it is based on G3.
Can use G3 TweaksBox to tweak UI like you can with G2 Xposed, but most features will require you to pay. Which I did, but don't think it is worth the money. Most changes require you to reboot to see effect and it is buggy.
Again knock code is a plus, better than stock ROM I think.
Slightly better battery than Stock but not much better, I would say about the same. Been using the same MODs since.
Camera is also pretty good, on par with STOCK (opinion, didn't test).
Mahdi-ROM 09/20
This is a very popular recommendation, rated the most stable ROM. But it is the opposite for me, phone would restart and FC.
Some bugs listed on ROM page. This doesn't affect me, but may affect some of you.
Very similar to CM11, a lot of options to tweak, too much in my opinion.
Battery life about same as stock, again the ROM wasn't stable enough for me so can't possibly have amazing battery life. Same MODs as I have now.
No knock code.
ParanoidAndroid 06/28
This is my current ROM, glad I decided to try it.
Very stable, haven't had a single FC or restart yet and I have been on it for weeks.
This is the fastest ROM, I don't notice any animation slow down at all. Ok a few times with the keyboard I am using but pretty sure it is the keyboard app.
Amazing battery life. e.g. 10 hours since unplugged, 2 hour screen on, 76% left.
Has double tab to wake, but no Knock code
Good amount of built-in customization
MODs + app suggestions
Twilight app (or something similar), for less harsh light on the eye when reading at night.
Google Now Launcher + Xposed GEL Settings, I like the Google Now being included in the launcher itself.
LiOn Tamer (AKA Unbounded) to stop wake-locks, just install and then done no set up require.
Silence app, which turns phone silent for those who work at from 9am - 5pm.
Calendar + Calendar Mute app which turn phone silent for those who are at University with odd lecture times.
Hello there, I have been looking for a thread like this for a while, how do you think they compare to other major roms like Vanir, Eos etc in Speed/ performance etc??
are you running any custom kernels? Art or Dalvik?

Unfortunately I haven't tried all the ROMs, so can't give you any suggestion on them.
As for custom kernels and ART, I have been using whatever comes with the ROMs. The result on PA is so good (7.5 hours screen on time with 22% battery left), I never found myself in the situation of needing to tweak anything. Kernel is generally my last choice, because it is a lot of trial and error. The last I tried ART was when it was still in beta, I should really give it a go now it is more stable.
Can you provide a link to the 26/8 PA rom? Can't seem to find it in the PA thread cos there are only other dated roms. Sorry for being a noob cos I've never flashed aosp on my g2. Or which release did you use or would recommend?
Dont you miss the Qslide apps on stock roms? or the Qremote? (I use it all the time)
and thanks for sharing the expirience... I myself decided only to root the phone in the case that it won't be getting Android 5.0

When I first switched to AOSP roms I missed them a lot. Fortunately there is a mod for the quick remote but none for Qslide. Either way you'll find yourself not needing Qslide after some time.

I tried Qslide on stock, then never used it again. For me spliting the screen in half means i can't see much of anything. I think it might be useful when you get used to it, but I never really got used to it.
I never used Qremote because I don't own anything which requires a remote.
Sorry that I can't be more helpful.

Hmmm I see what you mean, I was unable to find the ROM through PA thread. I have uploaded the version i got, here's the link
I've tried all above except paranoid (and CM11)
I think it should be mentioned that photos quality on mahdi rom are horrible.
I tried other camera applications but the bad quality remained.
Is PA or CM11 like mahdi (camera quality)?

Unfortunately the camera on PA is also pretty disappointing, in my experience anything that is not based on stock ROMs has bad camera experience.

I tried, pa, mahdi, plain.. All three gave some strange issue or reboot. I have been totally unlucky with asop roms in this phone. I had better experience with others, like nexus, s2 or note 2.

Thanks man. I did try it. After restoring sms, the Android. process message kept popping up, and reinstalling from beginning was a bit too lazy by my side. There is a cm version based on stock kernel which looks promising for what I am looking for, so I am keeping an eye on this CM version. Thanks again.

Nice write up! I used Mahdi, PA and CloudyG3 and agree with your comments. I'm currently running cloudyg3 and would like to add a few notes to those who are interested. Disabling all the animations does speed things up for me and the dev made the G3 Tweakbox features all free. PA is my second favorite ROM, super smooth and stable. If camera was better on PA, it would be my daily driver.

I'm really interested in trying the G3 rom. I've been using stock on this phone since I got it and I really love the built in features and stability. I've come from a long line of Nexus ownership and have a Nexus 7 2013 for AOSP support + latest updates.
I was really worried about the stability of the G3 port but feel a little more confident reading your review compared to other roms. Paranoid Android was always fun too, I just never tried it on my G2.

Yeah G3 Rom are very stable only some hiccups when you have too many apps open, apart from that everything is pretty good. Camera is normally the main selling point for most
Also I think going from stock -> G3 ROMs -> AOSP is a pretty good way going about it.
