USB Host & USB CD/DVD Drives? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well I've already used the USB Host on my Tablets and phones for mouse, controllers, keyboards, Apparently we can also attach USB Hard Drives?
My question is can it also work for USB CD/DVD Drives? I don't have device right now setup with USB Host to try it out. So just wanna ask the question.

From my testing, they don't work. I have a USB to IDE/SATA reader for recovering data from HDDs, it will also work with optical drives. On Android (CM9) I can use HDDs with this reader just fine, but optical drives don't work, and I didn't really expect them to. An actual USB optical drive may yield different results than a desktop drive through an adapter.

Thats too bad. Would be kinda nifty to play a DVD through it.

Pen Drives?

Can you get an adapter for a USB pen drive and use it? it would be nice if I could simply plug in my pen drive and view/edit/transfer files on my phone.
it wizards like most other htc devices dont support usb host
which is required to use other usb devices
I think is'nt possible.

[Q] USB 2.0 External DVD?

Has anyone tried hooking up an external dvd via usb 2.0 to the Gtab? Does it work? I saw one for $25 dollars at frys and I wonder if it'll work with my Gtab?
Thank you
Didn't work for me
Just hooked up a USB 2.0 DVD drive. My gtablet didn't see it. I have hooked up disks without issues. Perhaps no DVD driver.
I tried my Samsung that I use with my Netbook. Even powered thru a USB type charger it would not work. I agree with another statement, it probably need some kind of a driver.

What is the full size USB for?

Just wondering what can be done with the full size USB port. I've connected two cameras and my Droid X too it and none were recognized as mass storage devices. The only use I have found for it so far is that it can charge my phone. I would love to be able to be able plug in my camera (Sony, not SD card) and dump them on to it where ever I am for editing or uploading.
Thanks
Keyboards usually work right out of the box, so that can be a nice feature. Also, I think hard drives can be hooked up, but the tablet can't really power them, so they have to be connected via a powered hub. I think thumb drives/flash drives work as well, but I haven't tried them.
For me, being able to easily get a cheap, generic keyboard working has been a very nice feature of the tablet.
I believe I recall reading that you can use it for USB GPS receivers as well. I have not tried it myself.
ahhh a Keyboard, that would be a nice addition. Now that I think about it I am going to see if my bluetooth keyboard will work (don't have a USB one)
GPS is something I am missing more than I would have expected on a tablet
I have a 32gb thumb drive that works perfect. In fact, I have 5 thumb drives all with different data on them ranging from documents to videos.

That is what I use it for as well.
Anyone had success making USB controllers work for emulators? Seen the wiimote bluetooth setup, but I don't have a wiimote.

Interesting someone said that the USB port cant power usb devices, i connected my bluetooth gps to my usb port yesterday to see if it would power the gps, it did, so im not sure why we would think it does not power usb devices, as mine seems to be working fine.
Im setting my gtab up in my car and wanted to know if id need a second power souce for both the gtab and the gps. Seems to gtab will provide power to the bt gps ok.

It's not guaranteed to power them. Some 2.5" external drives and devices take a bit more than 1 USB slot can handle, even on laptops. Ever had a 2.5" external drive that randomly shows up or pops up then disappears? Also, ever seen a mini usb cable with 2 male USB connections? That's so that if the drive has issues using 1 port, you can plug another in and your devices will work. Even some flash drives at high capacity+speed may give trouble. There's def. the propensity for other usb devices to behave that way as well. Keyboards generally don't have that problem unless they're advanced (have lights, usb ports/hub on them), also mice don't generally have that issue either but anything else can.
What can work?
I'll say more than likely any powered external hard drive.
Some USB powered 2.5" external hard drives (my 320GB is seen and is usable, my 40GB is not as it is older and requires more power).
Most flash drives.
More than likely, any usb device engineered to worth within the constraints of using a single usb port (wireless controllers, remotes, mice, some keyboards, some gps units, etc.)
What probably won't work?
High capacity, high speed or OLD 2.5" usb powered external hard drive (750-1TB)
Advanced devices with a usb hub on them or lots of lights or moving parts, powered solely by the usb port
High capacity, high speed flash drives (though I'm sure this is vendor specific)
Interesting, so low powered devices will be usable, but not high powered ones, thats fair enough, both my bt gps and my fm transmitter seem to be working fine.
Ive ordered a 4 port usb hub which i planned to use to connect both the gps and the fm transmitter to the usb port to give them power, no biggie if it isnt able to do that, as i can use the hub elsewhere, but be interested now to see if it will work. Thanks for the heads up.

I also have an 'official Malata' USB to ethernet on the way for review to see if I can get it to work and see if there would be any interest for us in the States. I should have the demo today and will report back any findings?
IT2STEVE, I think you'll have takers on that USB->Ethernet adapter. I still stay at one hotel when traveling for work that does not have wireless (though most do). And sometimes at work, the wireless flakes out. This would be nice to have.

Have you tried tethering to your phone? I used my MyTouch 4g hotspot feature at two diners this past weekend and it worked well.
Wondering about the usb nic driver, is it provided with the usb nic ? or do we need someone to develop one ? Ive had a quick look on ebay and can see a few of these available, naturally none of them are official Malata' USB to ethernet. so that raises the question of using none Malata ones ?
I use it for a flash drive too.
The issue is that I copied mp3 from the flash drive to the g-tab..and when I use File Explorer I can see and play the songs, but in the Music app they dont show up.
320 external hard drive
Hello. I am looking to buy a 320 GB hard drive for my gtab. I am wanting to buy the Western Digital My passport essential. Do you think this will work with the USB on this device? It is usb powered. Thanks.
the tab usb will not power a standard hd
Anybody ever tried a USB TV Receiver? I'm doubting it would work, but would be cool...
I was looking to use the usb port to load pictures from my camera's sd cards via a card reader onto the tablet when I travel. Saves me from taking my laptop with me. I can do everything I need with a smaller device like a tablet now. (Might have to save them back on a flashdrive though in case the Gtab decides to delete your pictures...)
And I guess you can always use the the port for your USB Pet Rock. (thinkgeek.com/geektoys/cubegoodies/c208)

This poster says their 320 GB hard drive is powered by it. So will the 320 GB western digital essentials be powered by it?

When running on Android, is it possible to connect a SD card reader via USB port?

When running on Android, is it possible to connect a
SD card reader via Touchpad's USB port?
(16GB or 32GB SDHC card containing music and video files)
THanks!
Unfortunately, couldn't get it to work myself.
I tried the same setup I use on my SGII, OTG usb cable + USB key.
It might work with a power source. The USB otg cable alone doesn't work. If you get a USB splitter cable, and plug the extra end into a power source it should work. But ... if you have a power source like a computer you can just plug the TouchPad and card reader both into the computer, and transfer the files that way.
The only way to make it work on the go would be with a battery powered USB power supply and have both the otg cable and the splitter ... not very convenient.
In a pinch I have used the otg cable on my phone, then transferred the file over Bluetooth to the TouchPad while in Android. Again, not very convenient, but it worked.

this is setup that is cleanest that the other forum uses..
http://www.amazon.com/Solar-Powered-Battery-Charger-Adapter/dp/B006DVMW92
plus the otg cable..
no messy cable tangles..
besides solar charging, the TP's charger will charge hub
then mount it..
unmount when done..
As far as I know connecting a card reader needs the USB host mode and this is not available in Android 2 (http://developer.android.com/guide/topics/usb/host.html). Also the hardware has to be capable of that (maybe TP is). We have to wait until ICS is available on the touchpad.
I'd like to know if there can be more done w/ the TouchPad... i.e. more USB host support for other things (external hdd, controller etc)

Is it possible to connect usb thumb drive to nt?

If I purchased or made a female to female usb cable and connected to my Nook table cable and plugged a usb thumb drive to it, could I mount the thumb drive partition as lets say an sd-ext for even more additional storage? If the answer is yes, then my second question right after it is also usb keyboards, mice and possibly bluetooth and a powered usb hub and then a usb to vga or hdmi video out. (last one is a huge stretch but if your gonna dream.... dream big!) . Cydia for ipod touch 4th has an app called "TVOUT2 mirror TVOUT" which is a really cool feature with hdmi out adapter since xbmc can be installed on it.

Stock? No, not at all, non-stock? possibly, afaik it's not been done yet, but I don't believe it's been ruled out completely either.
