So I have an old Evo HTC and all I need to do is go in and grab the phone contacts
Why is this so hard? The phone is old and right now I am not sure of the make. I installed the sync, tried to sync to a sub folder i my contacts and continue to get sync errors. Has to be an easier way its 2012! HELPPPPPPPPP
Thanks

Wrong forum, but there should be a export option in your phone book/contracts settings.

Tried hard to find the right one. I spent more time looking for the right one then asking the question.
I tried to export to sd card, which is in it and it fails to see it. It is a de activated phone.
this phone has given the end user issues since day 1
Ask in the Evo forums, I have no idea why you came here

Hey all..
First of all, im a noob here, and I have tried to search the forum regarding this issue but nothing seems to match exactly what Im looking for.
I have recently gotten HTC HD2, my first ever cool phone. I thought it was so great that it could handle everything. I have used my phone like 6 days now, and im starting to notice significant delay in its performance, especially when it comes to messaging. Huge number of smses in my inbox is my main suspect. So, is it common for the phone to slow down when the inbox gets fuller? Is there a remedy for this, like can I store the messages in other places instead of inbox? What do you guys do to tackle this issue? Or do you guys simply delete old smses?
Regards
i know what u mean but i doubt there is such software
or a need for one..
personally i dont see the point of all the messages in there my max message count was 100 average 15 then delete

If you want to keep them but get them off your phone, sign up for My Phone with Microsoft and archive them from the web interface. They'll be removed from your phone and you can still get them online. You can get them back on your phone by moving them from the archive back to your phone from the web interface.

There's also PIM backup that can be found on this site. You can back them up from there but you can't choose individual messages.
Thanks for your quick reply guys. Looks like i've to live with it. Previously I was using an ancient phone, nokia 6680. It used to have the same problem. And I thought my main problem will be over when I switch to HTC HD2, but nope.. Looks like I have to either delete the old msgs, or back it up some place other than in the phone.
By the way guys, try Jeyo Mobile Companion. Its less than 2MB, and it is very usefull. U can store and manage your msgs easily when you connect your phone to your computer. Very easy to use, i like it.
Myphone has already been suggested and you can save messages on there its a great way and you can go through it on the pc so you can delete items you don't want
My wife has a stock AT&T 2.1 Aria, which she says she's repeatedly lost phone numbers. Sometimes when rebooting or the phone reboots (not often), the other day she says she had JUST put in someones phone number that day and we rebooted the phone and it was gone.
I don't get it, don't the numbers sync up to Google? Or is Sense doing something silly and storing it locally? She's really frustrated with this, and I've never heard of any such thing.
Maybe she needs to show me how she's putting in phone numbers, or there's some setting somewhere. I asked her to make sure she's not looking at data from Facebook as I know this can vary as it's dynamic from the app (as I understand it anyway) but she says this happens on numbers she puts in on the phone manually herself.
Any suggestions (besides upgrade the ROM, unless it's a KNOWN fix for this issue) would be appreciated.
First thing I'd look at is where she saved them sim or Google it'll go to either. then look and see what she has her phone set to show, either or both.when I first got mine I thought I'd lost numbers but I'd saved them to my sim and had the phone set to show Google contacts.now I only save to Google contacts much easier.
Actually I think stock also has a "phone" destination too.

That's what I was afraid of, multiple places to store phone numbers instead of just Google. I'll look around and see if there's a sim vs Google setting somewhere, and have her input a sample number and see what she picks or is default.
Been at the hospital for several days. My older brother was in a motorcycle accident and now I'm waiting to see if there's enough brain function left to continue treatment. He has and EVO 3d on Sprint. I need some help to get past his screen lock (numeric pin) so I can go through his contacts. This may get modded down but I'm desperate. Can anyone help me?

Sorry to hear that.
Is the device rooted?
I don't know his gmail and the phone is bone stock. Thx.
You could factory reset his phone, but that would also erase his contacts...
Exactly.
I need to contact some of his friends and I need their numbers off his phone. Can't factory reset.
Call sprint or whoever and act like him tell them u need to reset your password bcuz u forgot it and u can't unlock your phone they might ask for his ss # just a thought..good luck

Can't bypass, gonna have to try different pins he may have used. Sprint will not know his pin.

If contacts all what you need. try to login to his gmail account and contacts will be there because they are typically synched with his gmail account.
Your other option to see his bill statement either online or on paper. you will see his contacts phone numbers typically there with location but not name.
Install android commander on Windows. Connect to your computer and if he had usb debugging "checked" you will be able to access everything via. Windows. Long shot but worth a try. I did this when I smashed my screen and needed to get everything off of it before I sent it in. I'm sorry to hear about your brother.

Normally I might chide you for being in the wrong section, but you've been through enough. I'm truly sorry about your brother and I wish I knew a way to unlock his phone. Life sucks sometimes.

Maybe Google can allow access if you write them? Or at least pretend to be him using his ss#?

Nice Rom. I'm loving the 4G.

Really bro? I'm so sick of the 300 mods we have in the 3vo section! Is it in the wrong section? Yes. Did you have to say what u said? NO! I would have done the same damn thing because he's getting answers faster this way. Go be a **** somewhere else...Anyway you might want to try doing the old trick from the early android days. Call his phone from another one and answer it. When u answer it hit the home button and see where that gets you. Hope this helps and God Bless your family

So sorry to hear about your brother. I work for Sprint and unfortunately there is no way to get around a pattern/passcode lock on the phone without a gmail username/password or a hard reset. What you can do is check the sd card to see if there is a vcard file on it. It's possible he made a backup of the contacts on there. The file will end with .vcf. If you see any files like that put them on a computer and import them into another gmail account that you have access to. Hope this helps and I wish your brother luck to recover from his accident.
You could use Juopunutbear to get S-OFF and then flash a custom recovery from fastboot and then either pull his GMail account information from there or at least bypass the lockscreen.

There is no way to bypass the lock screen or get gmail info through the recovery. Plus I'm pretty sure the Juopunutbear bootloader unlocker hard resets the device.
Couldn't you pull the data partition with a recovery menu?
if you know is gmail, then attempt to do a password recovery of it. if u manage to get the password then you'll find all is contacts most likely synced with Google contacts.
check if hes still loggged into his gmail on his PC.
if hes using Firefox, he might of have had firefox save his password on his pc (assuming he as a computer) in the firefox options u can look at a master list of saved passwords and hopefully his gmail would be included...
found a link here: i havent tried it but its worth a shot.
http://droidlessons.com/how-to-reset-your-android-lock-screen-password/
If your familiar with rooting and modding. then maybe u can get clockworkmod on there and from there do a dirty flash of MeanROM or or CM9. there by flashing over the lock screen and pattern while keeping data.... this should be a last resort...
If he has his own computer you could try loging into his Play store and instal an app called : Screen Lock Bypass (search it on Play store).
If this doesnt help then your best luck is to search on Google "bypass android pin lock" and hopefully you find some methods.
And good luck to your brother i hope he gets better. =)
I was able to figure out his yahoo password which allowed me to reset his gmail password! I got his contacts. Thanks!
Anyway I will try to unlock the phone later when this all settles down so one of his sons can at least use it. (Their Mom passed away last summer, they are in their early 20's)
Thank you so much guys!
Does anyone know how to change the default location for saving new contacts? At the moment, when I go to add a new contact it will save it to the phone by default and I have to manually select Google contacts every time I save someone new. It'd be nice to be able to skip that extra step each time. I tried searching some of the other forums, I know there may be fixes for other HTC phones but I can't get them to work on my AT&T HOX+.
Thanks and happy new year to everyone!
Same thing drives me nuts, but I haven't found a fix I don't understand why HTC wants us to save to the phone and not the cloud

Weird.. my HOX+ picks the last used account when I want to save a new contact (Hotmail /Exchange Activesync)...
...but I do have this very annoying extra step you mentioned when I make a new calendar item. It always defaults to my Google account instead of the Exchange account, even though Google Calendar sync is turned off and is hidden in the Calendar app..
Also to mention that the stock HTC contacts app limits emails to 3 per contact when saved to the phone and doesn't have custom labels for emails/numbers. So annoying!!
So I've had to switch to the Google cloud for contacts which doesn't have those restrictions.

Try this

There's also a paid version, have everything that is missing from htc people app.

This started happening when i got my OG HOX, very annoying. Other android devices i've owned (EVO, Sensation, Nexus) worked properly. I've lost 10-15 numbers because of the way this is now. A couple very important ones... If i add a contact to my Google account it should seem easy enough to remember that and save the next contact there too. But nooo always wants to save to phone, even when phone is unchecked as viewable contacts... And its been almost a year and its still not fixed.. Thanks Android, HTC, ATT or whoever is responsible.....
Just quick update to this thread:
I have been using Viper Rom for the last week or so on my AT&T One X+ and last night I noticed when adding a new contact it DID default to Google contacts. Not sure how or why this change occurred, whether it was something I did or something cooked into the ROM. In fact, I noticed that under "Phone" in my contacts list there are zero entries. Maybe my phone contacts got disabled somehow? Either way, it's working great now. I never use "phone" for storing contacts anyway.
As a side note: I wish there was a way of combining the best bits of every ROM. Viper seems to have this contacts thing fixed and has some great UI tweaks but is very laggy; Elegancia is smooth, quick and has great battery life and also has the bluetooth distortion fixed; Blackout ROM has their custom kernel.
Hi,
I just got a new phone, if I go through the process to copy all of my old phone over to the new one can I still use my old phone after its done?
The main reason I'm asking is because I've got hundreds of open browser tabs (on 3 separate browsers!) that I want to sort through and bookmark before I lose them but want to start using my new phone straight away.
Otherwise it seems that all app data, apps, contacts etc is automatically saved and transfered so I think the open tabs are the only thing that needs sorting. Is there anything I'm forgetting/missing?
Thanks!

Hi,
Idk which method you'll use to transfer data, but your old phone won't be reset if you don't ask for it. Usually data transfer are just a "copy/paste" of the data from one phone to another. The only phone I know that loses data when transferring is the iPhone (and hopefully you don't have one).
Have a good day
Haha, no iPhones here! OK thanks, I couldn't find an answer with Google so thought I'd ask on here.
Great news as it means I can go ahead and start using my new phone.
Which method do you recommend? Does it matter? Options seem to be via cloud or direct transfer over WiFi.
Thanks!
