Hardware swap ?? - HTC EVO 3D

Digitizer going bad on my 3d. Phantom touches all over randomly. Went to Sprint repair store yesterday to get it replaced, but like always, couldn't get it to do any wonky actions while in front of them.
Needless to say, I couldn't get it replaced as there was no issue show. And like always , as soon as I left and got 15 minutes away from the store, phone started going haywire again.
Started looking on craigslist today for a parts 3d of cheap whole one in good condition. I found a couple worth checking out, but then remembered I have a buddy with a Virgin Mobile 3d just collecting dust.
Now my question is, would it be possible for me to get his and take them both apart and just drop my main board in that one and be good to go? My rear speaker is shot to hell too, along with my case. So instead of just grabbing the digitizer I figure I could just drop the main board in and use the rest of the HW in his phone.
Will this work successfully? Or would it be best to keep mine in place and just pull digitizer and speaker from his?
TIA

Yes, it's possible but in my experience taking apart phone and putting them back together is very difficult. You have to have the exact right tools and sometimes requires soldering. Most often you never put it back together just right and have problems. Good luck!

I've done something similar agrees so with a Samsung Moment. My charge put went bad so I bought a parts phone on ebay and swapped the main board. Worked like a charm until the charge port failed again.
It's definitely possible but you do have to have the right tools.

[Q] NEWBIE HERE! Really F'd my HD2 up!!! HELP!!!

So, about 2 weeks ago, I got my HD2 off of Craigslist with a cracked screen. It worked perfectly fine with the exception of the hardly noticeable cracks. I knew I could get the replacement digitizer/screen for $40-80. I got my screen in the mail yesterday and, following the "YouTube" video tutorial found on this site, I......ugh.... replaced the screen....................I SCREWED UP BIG TIME!
First, I broke the ribbon cable for the Side "Volume Up/Down" buttons. Then, I broke the ribbon cable for the "soft keys." Ah, crap, but oh well. I figured I could use the touch screen for pretty much everything i needed to do. Well, while prying the cracked digitizer screen from the LCD, I went a bit too deep & peeled the tinted film off of the LCD. I thought nothing of it at the time. I'd already done enough damage. So the display would be a bit brighter than normal oh well.......WRONG! I put the phone back together and once I get it to power up, all I get is a white screen. I thought I missed something. So I disassemble & check 3 more times. Still a white screen.
Well, after all of this, the new digitizer/screen doesn't want to stay in place very well. So, being pissed off and curious, I pull it out and away and notice in the backside reflection of the digitizer that I can slightly make out the phone display. So, apparently the "Tinted Film" that I accidentally peeled off of the LCD makes images visible on the phone screen. I kind of damaged this film when peeling it off. Therefore, I am unable to put it back on. Does anyone know of a simple fix without replacing the LCD?
SORRY FOR THE "SHORT STORY LONG."
I was brainstorming and thought that maybe the film was polarized. So, I grabbed my sunglasses, which are polarized, and wearing them, I can faintly see the display. Anyone think maybe polarized window tint might fix my problem?
Hey man I have some electronic devices that need repair, can I send them to you to fix them?
SURE!
You can pay me in HD2 parts.
Sir i can only say 1 thing. search ebay and replace everything you damaged. only that way you will get your hd2 in perfect state.

I'd go one step further and say bin it and get a new one!
You sound just like me. That is why I never try things like that anymore. Hope it gets sorted but might be better looking for a used one.
I've got it functioning...
I found the film that I ripped off, put it over the screen and........I CAN SEE! However, the top half has lines through it. So, I must've damaged the LCD. The good news is that my phone is useable again. I just have to do everything via the touch screen and can't let the screen hibernate unless I have my charger close by. I'm just gonna keep my eye out for a cheap busted phone and eventually have a 100% phone again...
I sympathize with you. I broke HD2 while I was trying to check for loose WiFi card cable(cuz i was getting weak WiFi signals). The cable turned out to be fine but the external speaker stopped working. I opened it up again and adjusted some parts and it just got worse. the HD2 didn't power on at all. I tried fixing it but to no avail. I ended up sending the HD2 to a repair shop and was charged $170 for the repair. the repair guy said i messed up the power IC and the connector for the external speaker and he had to replace the power IC and resolder the connector.
I think I'm gonna stop trying to open up expensive phones. i was stupid thinking that since I have successfully replaced digitizer for my previous Palm T3, E2 and T5, opening up HD2 wouldn't be a problem. Should have known HD2 components are really fragile...

Dust Under Screen?!

I dont know why it is with these newer model phones, but just from the suggestion posts that came up when i entered the title of this thread, but My LGOT and i guess even the G2 have an issue where dusts starts to build up under the sceen....
Ive only had my phone for a little over 2 weeks, but even after the first couple days, i noticed that there were already a few trickles of dirt right around the middle of my screen.
I guess my main question is, is there anything i can do about this, has anyone had the same troubles, and what can we do to prevent this from happening?
In Thailand this is general problem of LG Optimus One
you should contact LG Customer support
they'll open your phone and blow dust out
if dust cause touchscreen malfunction they'll change new one for you
some people guess that dust already in the phone due to assembly process from factory
some guess maybe dust go through usb port
I have my phone since 2 days and i already have a dust spot in the lower right corner. This is annoying! If this spot is growing i will contact the costumer support.

I am working on dusty area, but no dust under screen. Phone is 1 month old.
Me I have not this problem, but remains me the same issue with the iPhone 2/3 (google iphone dust screen).
I think it's a common problem with capacitive screen, but no "easy" solutions to fix it...
poor construction quality, imho.

this is one of those instances where a really cheap phone shows its faults. the phone is free on contract and little of $200 without. with it being so incredibly cheap, there is going to be something wrong that causes concern.
Im okay with it happening as long as it gets fixed and the problem is acknowledged by both LG and the phone carriers. it seems like many people are having this problem at the moment and T-Mobile is willing to exchange it in store, so good on them for being considerate.
i have the same issue. Don't know how to prevent that

I actually have not this problem my device is now over 2 weeks old. Maybe it depends on the area you are or temp.? ect...

No dust here either. I have a silicon case, I don't think it helps very much.
just disassemble it. There is no warranty seal. You'll find the dust inbetween the lcd screen and the capacitive overlay.

Hi! please tell us how to do it!
I too have this problem Can any one please let us know how to get rid of it.
I have the same problem with my Optimus One, dust is starting to gather on the right bottom corner and it seems to have increased since the first time I saw it. I've thought about buying a can of compressed air and trying to blow it near the edge of the screen but maybe that will just make it spread even further.
I've also thought about unscrewing the screws on the back panel of the phone and clean it but I'm afraid that it will affect the capacitive screen in some way making it less responsive and that after I assemble it back together it'll become even less air tight and thus accumulate even more dust.
Maybe I'll reclaim my warranty but I'll have to un-root my phone and wipe it clean before leaving it at the store and it's going to be a pain in the ass to reinstall everything when it returns.
Will they replace the mobile for this problem?
You can back up everything by titanium backup and copy the titanium backup folder from sd to your pc or pen drive. In your newly replaced phone you can copy back this folder to sd card and after installing titanium backup application you can restore everything.

Touch problems

I have been having issues with my touch screen on my evo. I dropped it in water a while back for like 5 seconds but I dried it and it worked fine till today. I have a band across the bottom that wont register touches. I took it apart, and tested it and it worked, but when I put the screws back in it quit again. pixels are fine, just touch. And when I get it to work, If I put the back cover on it quits, and sometimes if i press the back of the phone it registers touches on the front...weird right? SO anywho Ive out this off, but I can't find anything about it on google so if anyone can help me you have my thanks. New digitizer? Im sitting it in rice now, but if theor is an issue, its way to late lol

I actually have been having some problems too. Started about a month ago. Nothing to do with water though. I came across some people talking about this in the following link...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411461
search "touch issues"
Theres nothing really you can do except try to get a replacement and hop they dont figure out it took a swim.
If you cant find the answer , it basically states that the Evo 3D has a defect with its touch screen. Im actaully unrooting mine now to take it back to best buy (where I took out my insurance plan). Much better that Sprints coverage. Its a few dollars more a month and you have to provide a credit card but so work it.
Hope this helps a little.
Peace
Hmm I got my evo off eBay. They won't replace it if I don't have a sprint account correct?

What carrier do you use the device on? If Sprint, they might be willing to look at it. Actually, whatever carrier you are using for service on the device *might* be willing to take a look at it for free. If not, they might be willing to take a look at it for a specific charge/estimate fee.
Really depends on the store/technician as to what they're "willing" to do.
Otherwise, sounds like you have experience taking the device apart and experimenting. Might be worth getting a new digitizer off ebay and swapping.
Although, before you start throwing parts at the issue, would be worth hoping you can find more details. Unfortunately, most users swap the devices out for replacements so many hardware issues don't get a lot of attention for troubleshooting.
The only thought which occurred to me that wasn't covered in the previous posts was the issues sounds almost as if a short/ground was being created somewhere registering the false touches for a particular area. Perhaps the cable is crimped or being pinched in some area?
Hope that helps and keep us updated! Good luck!
Ok I took it apart and looks like a cable was getting smashed. Anyways I sold it.

Ive got your answer guys! its the screen digitalizier had the same exact problems for months to the point of throwing it, sometimes i would put a new rom on it and it would fix it for a couple hours and then it would come back I called a cell phone repair place in st louis called. CRP they have local shops and a website you can send it in. It takes about 2 hours if you have a shop around you or send it off. Call around to see if you have any cell phone repair shops near you Ok by now, you guys are dieing too know the price right, $89.99 plus tax for local repair was my price. Beware you can buy this part from amazon with a kit for $25 and theres video guides online too but unless your use to this kind of work ,pay for a shop to do it or buy the whole lcd screen which is over a hundred dollars anyway. I hope my advice helped you guys because im so happy to have my 3vo running like new again.

Think VZW rep scratched my laser

Hey everyone,
Just got back from the Verizon store. I decided to have the rep there put on my screen protector, so that if they did a bad job they would redo it. They did a great job putting the protector on, so i left and put a case on the phone in my car.
When i got home i was taking a closer look at the device and noticed scratches on the bottom half of the laser. Now I cant stop looking at it, although my girlfriend cant even notice them.
What would you guys do? I know its just a scratch, but painful to walk out of a store and already see damage on a device that i didnt cause. That being said, i know it will look ridiculous trying to point the scratch out if i go back in the store.

Call and get a replacement for a known problem, like the auxilary port doesn't work in most cars, etc.
Mine had the same scratches straight out the box from Verizon.
Are you living with it, or trying to get a replacement? there is a chance that maybe he didnt do it and it was that way out of the box in the case as well. Anyone else see this? the bottom 1/4 of the laser has scratches on it

As an update (and probably final post) to this thread - I had some friends over who have an eye for detail, not a single one of them could see the scratch. Based on this i decided to give it a day or two, and im no longer obsessing over it.
Somewhat of a life lesson, nothing stays perfect forever - no longer losing sleep over this

I've been seeing a psychologist for my ocd for years and one of the biggest problems I have is "looking" for things wrong with phones I buy. His advice was to scratch whatever phone I buy in some way right away. He said eventually something like a drop could happen anyways. Nothing is perfect.

I do the same thing. Anything I buy or have has to be minty mint or it bothers me. Especially with phones I freak out when there's a scratch that for some reason only I can see.
Putting a little ding or scratch in helps stop obsessing. You should try it. Maybe it will help you also.

Power Button

On my Verizon V10 the power button/fingerprint scanner seems pretty loose. There's a lot of play up and down, kind of like this video. Is this common? Is this a defect? Should I swap it out while I'm in my 14 days?
Mine is like this also probably so it allows for the finger to conform
Sent from my LG-H901 using Tapatalk
Also feels loose on mine, but not too bad. Maybe intended as mentioned above.
Mine is not that loose. It has a little bit of play but I don't hink it's as much as what your video shows.
I have the black T-Mobile version.
Sent from my LG-H901 using Tapatalk
Rolling the T-Mobile version here as well. Mine isn't as loose as it looks like yours is.
I'd go and get a replacement if you think it'll cause problems in the future.
F600S here... I would say loose, but the video is like twice mine.
Mine started out being a little wobbly but has gotten progressively worse over the last 2 days. I'd say now it's as wobbly and creaky as in the video. Gonna head to the Verizon store to check out the floor display and possibly swap it out.

Good idea. Better to go work it out now instead of letting it fester inside you.
My fingerprint reader wasn't working well at all, took 20 minutes to register fingerprint and unlocking was hit and miss. Took it back to store and tried the demo. The demo was perfect. They gave me a new phone and reader didn't work. (the sales guy couldn't get it to work either)
Then I realized the only thing different was the cheap Verizon case.
With the case off, and touching the metal edges while using fingerprint reader it unlocked 100 percent all the time.
If you have issues try without case. Must have something to do with conductivity. Happy camper now.
Mine has a little play in it as well. I wonder if it was the result of the jagoff TMO employee straining to turn the thing on with brute force before I asked him to stop then hand it to me. Oh boy, this feel lighter than my G3, you sure the battery is in it?
I'll forever blame that person now.
I swapped mine out, now a week later the button on the new unit is pretty wobbly too. I don't know how well LG designed/tested this thing and what kind of long-term durability we should expect out of it. I love the phone, so I'm not going to return it. Let's see if any wide-spread issues creep up.
same Problem
I have the same problem but its not that bad, it does not stay stuck onto one side but i did notice that it was very creaky and sounded like springy
