If you try to compile anything 4.0+ your going to have a bad time. unless you have 4 gig ram, not even GB.

I have added some specs on OP

If you are trying to compile, its not going to matter, your specs are too low.

+1 Netbooks are intended for nothing more than browsing the web. To try to make it run some resource-intensive function is askimg for trouble. If even just consider that Windows has to be stripped down just to make it work right, you should realize that you're computer isn't quite up to the job.

I am only compiling kernels on my laptop and it takes at least 15 minutes on my celeron 1.86 GHz and 1 gig RAM. Compiling whole android system on a netbook is very bad idea, it takes a lot of CPU power and Intel Atom is not designed to work on high loads.

Thank you for advices

I know this is an old post, but i have a cheap 11.6inch laptop/netbook that came with 4gb of single channel ddr3 ram and a 320gb hdd, put 8gb of ram and a 480gb sandisk ssd in even though it only has sata 2 and it runs fine
Intel n2840 dual core celeron, 1mb cache. (2.16ghz and 2.58ghz boost)
Very low power it is fanless, acer aspire e3-112.
Compiles cm12.1 fine for my n9005, only takes half an hour
Edit -
I use arch as my primary, but use xubuntu 15.10 to build with. Did have some problems dual booting with grub and uefi but managed to sort it out.
Great cheap setup with really good battery life, 11.6inch 1366x768 screen.

I guess it will just be a new brench of linux distribution with android like ui

An android desktop would be slower than a version like linux or windows and android just doesn't have the software of any desktop os so would be a poor choice to use as one.
For example say you want to convert a video or add subtitles to it, make a rom or do some developing etc. Bit hard on what is meant to be a mobile os. Next android version could change that but not anytime soon.

The Linux 3.3 kernel is bringing in Android features. There is also the Ubuntu for Android project going on. I imagine if Android stays popular that someday you'll be able to easily run Android apps right in Linux. This would help out Linux as it would get some popular apps out there like Neflix and may make it more appealing to people.
At this point, an Android desktop ui wouldn't be of use to anyone, really. As stated before Android doesn't have any desktop applications, and it would likely be a few hundred mb's to get a fairly usable set of apps. Why go through the trouble, when you can just use a launcher like kde plasma?

... plasma is basically a ROM for actual linux.
its very pretty, has some cool features, and is featured in kubuntu
Another problem is that for all apps that use native arm code would not run on an x86 processor

No. Plasma is not basically a Read Only Image (ROM) of a system.
Plasma is the desktop shell of the K Desktop Environment (KDE).
Your android device is more of an actual Linux system than various systems you can run KDE on, as KDE is in not limited to systems running on top of a Linux kernel.

I don't know the ins and outs... Sorry.I'm still rather new to Linux, just installed Ubuntu via wubi on my laptop.... Anyways, I just meant it more like "kde is the front end of the whole shebang, just like a ROM is" I guess I probably should've said launcher...
Sorry for any misconceptions

I'm eagerly awaiting an android desktop environment. I've been using osx for a decade, and I'm getting a little sick of it. Windows is on my gaming machine, and always will be. Plus I can use that machine for heavy CPU stuff like video conversion. But I would love to switch to a smooth Androud environment for every-day use (web browsing, facebook, email, IM, etc).
In the same vein, my friend's daughter corrupted her netbook with viruses within about 2 weeks of getting it, despite anti-virus protection, etc. I offered to install Linux (Newborn) for her to try, which she did, and loved it. Now her only complaint is that she can't download cool apps like she can on her Android. That's another perfect Android scenario. Unfortunately Android x86 isn't compatible with half the hardware on the device (yet). But hopefully someday...

Is it possible to run Windows xp\7 on the SGS3?

i figured that the galaxy S III is a storng quad core device so can it run windows?
Does Microsoft support the phone? CPU, chipset, drivers? If yes then you can.

No, because windows is closed source and xp/7 even has no arm support, but you can run linux (I.e. ubuntu on it).

No madness. Even I did Google few months earlier. The answer is big no because MS Os is a closed source. If it wasn't xda developers would be the first hunter.

I wish I could experience the wp7 or wp8 in this beast. Simply for fun.those animation effects and all really eye appealing. HTC hd2 able to run both. But it's a wp phone. Hope someday someone brings a port!! Though hopes not much up!!

Windows 8 on Android

Is it at all possible for the Windows 8 os to be ported to our android devices? Don't hate please..just a noob being a noob
Sent from my SGH-I747 using Tapatalk 2
Definitely not the full version but possibly RT.RT is the windows 8 version that runs on ARM processors.
Would be an interesting dual boot
Like posted above, the full version of Windows 8 is not meant for the ARM architecture that Android phones use, but RT (found on the RT Surface Tablet) is.

It would still need a custom kernel and drivers, which seeing windows rt is very locked down I doubt it will happen.

Ubuntu on nexus 10?

Has anyone tried using the install instructions as a guide for installing Ubuntu on the nexus 10? If so, how much work will it take to get a bootable Ubuntu on our device? Ubuntu definitely supports our CPU, as it is on a Samsung chromebook that has the same processor. Sorry to junk up the forums, but I'd really like some info on the possibility of this happening.
EDIT: they also share the same quad core GPU. I really don't see why Ubuntu won't run on this out of the box...

I believe there are a few devs looking into it at the moment. See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2012294
I've seen this. It seems no one has updated in a while, so I was assuming it was forgotten.
I was also thinking maybe chrubuntu would be the logical place to start, because that is an alpha that is working already on the chromebook.

Ubuntu touch?

Could I request a port of Ubuntu touch? I think it would rock to see that beast in action!
Sent from my Rezound using xda app-developers app
We are all dying to try it, but we need a Dev to take on the port.
Darn... If I had more knowledge on how to do this I would totally take a wham bam whack at it. I guess reading the forums its a branch off CM 10... I could be wrong. It did say it uses a mirrored git repo and is supported for all official cm10 devices.

My tablet has a ubunto rom i have the Acer Iconia A500, its a rough build n most things dont work...itll be cool to run somethin new
From what I've heard Ubuntu touch is basically android running Ubuntu touch on top of it, but that was the tablet version so idk about the phone version. Later versions of Ubuntu touch should be full Ubuntu base though.
Sent from my Infected Rezound using xda app-developers app
Touch runs along side the android virtual machine. In about a year we should see the full Ubuntu mobile app on there own hardware running natively without an android base. The Ubuntu mobile is supoost to be one of the biggest leaps ever in terms of mobility. Its sup post to run on your phone dock with a tablet and even have the ability to use as a low end computer. In short its gonna be awesome!
