[Q] About updating to JellyBean 4.1.1 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i just want to know if i can just straight away update my phone to Jellybean from Ice cream sandwich because my phone is rooted. Am i suppose to unroot it or can i just update? Thanks in advance.

Nope. It's device specific. A developer has to adapt drivers and other software to allow android to work with your hardware.
If you can find your device model on XDA, you'd probably find some jellybean ROMS (software) for your phone.
P.S. Go read android terminology and stickies!

Hunting: Android 4.1 Jellybean - ZTE Merit Compatible

As the title suggests, I am hunting for a ZTE Merit (Z990G) compatible version of the new Android 4.1 Jellybean. I've been searching for a few hours on google, other forums and this forum with no results. The closest I've come to is one for the ZTE Skate, but I don't want to risk a brick due to incompatibility. My phone is rooted successfully already, I just need the ROM now.
*edit*
I would also settle on ICS (ice cream sandwhich) if that is available.

[Q] Gah! Head hurts, want to root my GT-7510 ICS - Please help!

I've been reading forums and searching forums all day, but can't seem to find a definitive answer to whether I'll be able to root my specific version of tablet or not, there's so many different types, build numbers, UK versions/US versions my head is close to blowing! Any advice would be soo much appreciated.
I bought a tablet off Ebay, a GT-7510 (US version I think, although I live in the UK) which came with Honeycomb installed. I then updated OTA to ICS 4.0.4, but it seems pretty laggy in general compared to the other Galaxy tabs I've seen, now I'm at the point where I'd like to root it and try some custom roms to see if they're any better than the stock ICS rom.
Here is the info for my tab which I think is relevant:-
Android Version 4.0.4
Kernel version 3.1.10
Build number IMM76D.UELPL
I've found so many different methods of how to root certain variations, but can't be certain if one of them applies to my tablet, whether I'd have to flash it back to Honeycomb, whether it only works for UK or US versions etc etc, that I've given up searching and thought I'd start my own post, and hope that somebody could tell me whether I can definitely root my device, and which would be the best method to do it? I have no warranty on my device as it's a refurb, so rooting doesn't bother me, but I'm worried about using the wrong method and bricking it.
Really hope somebody can help me, thanks very much in advance for any advice.

For the P7510, rooting it is dead easy - just download a recovery and flash it using ODIN. See the rooting guides here. Honeycomb doesn't complicate things at all.
Thanks k1mu, when you say honeycomb doesn't complicate it at all, some of the guides I've read specify that they're for honeycomb installations only, I have the stock ICS rom which was installed OTA, is Android version not an issue anymore, and the guides will work no matter which version you have installed? Also, my tablet is a GT-7510, not a P7510, not sure what the difference is, if any? Sorry if I seem dumb, just want to be sure before I go ahead.
Thanks very much for your help.
Just to update for anybody searching who is as confused as I was, I got root access using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029664 from user Jovimon.

Google Edition RUU for S4

Hi everyone. I'm new to Android and installing ROM's so please excuse me for the basic questions. I tried searching for an answer but could not decipher some of the terminology in these forums.
I currently have a Verizon S4 with the stock OS version 4.2.2. I was told by a friend who had a HTC One that I could flash my phone with a new type of Google Edition ROM called an RUU. Apparently this was just a dump of the stock android software off the Google Edition device and I could load it on my device without rooting the phone. I was also told this would be like a real Google Edition phone once I do this and I would be able to get updates from google to update to newer versions.
Is there such a thing for the Galaxy S4 or is that only possible for the HTC One? If so could you point me to the thread with the ROM for me to flash to this version where I can get updates directly on the device without having to reflash manually?

Your friend doesn't know squat about Samsung devices, or even the Verizon One.
(1) RUUs are HTC only. Samsung uses Odin images.
(2) You can't flash images for a GSM device like the S4/One Google Editions straight onto a Verizon (CDMA) device.
So what he suggests is impossible, and would be impossible even if you had the One.
Read up on safestrap, if your baseband ends in ME7 of course. That's your only option for flashing anything at this time. Go to settings, more, about phone, baseband to find out what you have. Please please read and read some more until your a Samsung expert.... It only takes a couple days and you'll be able to flash roms, the closest thing to what your friend is talking about is the Google gpe, do not take any updates from Verizon or kies, read about rooting and Odin. Lastly the above poster is right, turn on your video camera and beat him with your phone then make him watch the video over and over, it's pretty hard to brick your phone but what he's suggesting would have been bad mkay? If you need help hit us up and we'll make you an android expert.

[Q] Motorola fire xt532 upgrade android?

Ii have a motorola fire xt532, with android 2.3.7 on it, i realize that some of the newer versions of the droid OS may not be compatible, so does anyone know what is the newest possible version i can install on my phone? i'm new to android, but have done this with blackberries before, so i have some basic knowledge, i just need a point in the right direction. also, where can i get the new andoid OS from? i have been unable to find android os for download via PC, and what other software will i need on my pc to complete this?
FYI: i read alot of posts and havent found anything related to the 532, and i see alot of people's answer to upgrading to newer versions of android is "go to about phone and upgrade software" well android 2.3.7 does NOT have that option, or i wouldnt be asking and searching thread after thread. I appreciate any help in the right direction, and your time for the help.

[Q] (help) Sony Xperia Ray Update to android 4 on modified phone?

Hi,
So I've done my best to read up on this but I'm absolutely terrified of Bricking my phone, so can someone please give me some advice?
I've got a Sony Xperia Ray running android 2.3.4 which is terrible and It won't let me use any decent apps.
I want to upgrade it to Android Icecream but I'm terribly dumb when it comes to phones, my talents lie in computers and I've been up the past couple of hours trying to decide what to do, I can't find a explanation that is noob freindly.
The reason I'm so hesitant is this phone was unblocked from a network to be compatable on any network, and I'm not sure if this effects the updating procedure?
When I downloaded the Sony PC companion it prompted me to upgrade my android but I'm not sure if this will upgrade the Kernel as well (Sorry if it's a stupid question).
I really need someone's help, I'm terrified!
Specs below:
Model: ST18i
Android Version:2.3.4
Baseband Version:8x55A-AAABQAZM-2-3028D-64
Kernel:2.6.32.8-perf

Sony's PC software will also update kernel if going to 4.0.4
sonys 4.0.4 is same or more laggy than 2.3.4 (gingerbread) also it still have a small storage, so u dont will have many space for apps.
if sony software fails to update, download the "flashtool" , with this u can flash firmwares manually. see in general section for tuts. firmwares can be downloaded here: http://talk.sonymobile.com/t5/Andro...y-Bean-ICS-Ice-Cream-Sandwich-and/td-p/154389
but the best you can do with this phone is to install some good custom rom. it will give the best experience on that phone.
to do so you need to check if you can unlock bootloader in service menu (google how to enter)
unlock bootloader: http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
lookup this fine ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2543426
good luck!
