To get S-Off, has anyone tried rolling back to the old RUU (Prerelease) and using HTC Dev? It probably won't work, but it might be worth a shot...
htc dev wont work, they arent going to give an unlock key,it doesnt matter what firmware we are running.
from what i can gather, zergRush works,we need to be able to disable emmc write protect so that a new hboot can be written. im assuming the usual exploits for this are not working,or it would be out by now.
it may be possible that an older ruu may be more "exploitable" i dont reeally know.
i hope some breakthrus come... i hate to think htc devices are going to become "unlockable" like moto i like the rezound but have got to hold out till it has at least a software s-off.
id also be happy with clip support, since i have one of them
edit: htc dev unlock is a joke anyway. i do appreciate the efforts on their part to satisfy the root community, but it is not an s-off. what you get,is an unlocked s-on hboot that lets you change recovery, boot, and system. no radio or hboot changes, and no backwards RUUs without rewriting the misc image.
its unfortunately far from the freedom from a true unsecured bootloader. it may well be good enuff for most folks, but im not happy with that.
It's a good thought tho. Yeah the htc method for the EVO users sucked. I Mena u could still flash roms and such bit they had to have a stock kernel as a default In order to flashed em thru recovery. But I wouldn't be to happy with that either. So I can't blame ya. But if that all we were offered then I would have to live with it.

I was thinking of getting this phone but I doubt I will now.it sucks that HTC is becoming like Motorola and locking their bootloaders.

i would wait. we waited for evo 3d root far longer.
it really is a great phone. read engadgets review. they really explain the screen resolution very well with graphs. its sold as a music phone but at this time it is the best screen res in the world. the nexus and razor are inferior in that area. watching hd video on it is pretty cool

htc has been locking their bootloaders, this is nothing new. in the past, its just been easy to find work arounds to either turn of the radio secure flag off,or to sneek an eng hboot(that pretends the radio is s-off ) onto the device, and its always happend quickly,in most cases before the device even came out.
to my knowledge there is not encription, like there is with moto bootloaders, ist just that we currently have no way to write a new hboot in place of the current one.
if there is not a real engineering hboot for the rezound, its not too difficult to patch a stock hboot to not do radio checks, and to provide fastboot commands, and even protect itself from being overwritten(all these are characteristics of the revolutionary hboot), its just a matter of an exploit to get it in place.
i know i sort of started that ball rolling with my comment, but i wouldnt give up just yet. hopefully someone whose smarter than us will figure it out. or the clip will support it. or both
im not saying i wont get it,but im still happy with my thunderbolt,i dont need a new phone yet,so i will wait untill we have s-off,or possibly until 4 core processors come out next year

C'mon, the phone hasn't even been out a week. It takes time, but the devs almost always find a way in.
I believe that HTC not posting an unlock key is of course Verizon's doing but as was mentioned that is not true s off.
Im also of the opinion that this boot loader isn't encrypted. Im pretty confident s off will come

Well if it helps, the RUU didn't work. It aborted midway through and gave an HBOOT error. I might try again, but it's probably not worth losing my data for.
If it can be done xtc clip will do it and if they can do it alpha rev and unrevoked will pull it off as well let's just give them some time.... I'm not worried at all at the moment

if the 3D bootloader was incrypted,it would still be in place. i dont believe it could be overwritten, even with a radio secure flag off. it is all but impossible to find the encryption key, without the encrypter giving it to you.
hmm. after some thot... does revolutionary give the 3d a new hboot like it does for other models? looking at their site again,it gives permanent nand unlock to the sensation,3d,and mytouch slide. i guess its possible to turn the secure flag off,and all partitions could be flashed without security checks except the hboot.

Wow that's a great thought. But the hboot would remain the same. Wiether u had 1.30 or 1.40 to begin with. They never released there exploit tho. I know it had to do with the kernel and htc patched it with the 2.08 update. Bastards LOL.

Considering the HTC unlock method has been released since roughly August and we find ourselves now in January with essentially 5 months have passed without an unofficial root method .. I would probably lean towards not counting on an unofficial root method.
Haven't seen any new information from Unrevoked or AlphaRevX regarding work on the EVO 3D as I'm sure there are some devices in existence which don't have any unlock method that might garner more attention ...
Most of that is just opinion and speculation based on personal experience. Might not be worth anything but figured I'd post an answer in the hope it might help! Good luck!

Even with having the 1.5 hboot, you are still able to flash roms and kernels without issues, just have to do it in a different way.
If your a person that enjoys the challenge (should be the quality of anyone who roots) you'll see past the issues and roll with the punches unrolled an easy way comes along.
Remember people, if your hear, you don't want it the easy way. You don't want to have everything done for you, find joy in getting your hands dirty and doing something challenging.
BTW, yes I have an EVO 3D WITH 1.5 HBOOT and everything is business as usual in the flashing department

took me 10 min after reading the instructions, and more because I don't use Windows (Linux only) so I had to load up my VM for some things. But the unlocking of the Bootstrap and the rooting process is quick.
Yes having S-Off is a huge difference, but just because I don't have it doesn't mean that my life with the phone ends there. I can still flash kernels, ROMs and anything 1.4 hboot could do, I just have to load recovery via fastboot and I'm all set.
Yes, maybe I can't use ROM manager to make my life easy, and maybe to flash I will always be (for now) tied to having to use a computer for better results, but in reality, what?? I have access to a computer most of the time, and if I don't, I wait because or I may be in the field doing training or something else and I don't want to invest my time in flashing at all.
Another way is that if you don't want to use the computer just remove the boot.img from the zip (I believe its that one) file of the ROM your wanting to flash and I believe this should let you flash right from Recovery and then you can access fastboot to flash the Kernel side.

Definitely S-OFF though. I think you can use Revolutionary if you're on hboot 1.4. It's been so long since I've rooted...

How about nadroid backup and restore functionality on hb 1.5 i mean i assume we would run into issues with this if we want to restore to a previous version of a rom with a non stock kernel.
Sometimes i go flash happy and end up with a boot loop situation but all is usually well because i just wipe and restore.

I believe you would have to backup everything except the boot area. You would have to flash the kernel first before restoring the backup.
Note: I haven't tested this, but simple logic says it should work. If I'm wrong, please correct me.

I have a very noob question that I was unable to find an answer to while searching the forums.
It seems that (understandably) the OneX development is much further along than the EVO LTE. My guess is that S-OFF will (hopefully) be achieved soon for that phone. My question is: how well will achieving S-OFF on the OneX translate to the EVO LTE considering the phones are, to my understanding, so much alike.
Will S-OFF on the OneX mean S-OFF for the EVO LTE shortly after?
Thank you ahead of time for answering my noob question.

In the same boat. I'm dying to get rid of this bloatware and I have several apps that require superuser, but I don't want to hassle with un-rooting/re-rooting when an S-OFF method is released.

The only reason for S-off is if you don't want to void warranty then? It also looks like there will be a big hassle to get updates pushed to the device. I hope there is a leak of the Eng bootloader.

Right now everything can be done with S-ON EXCEPT flashing radios. Unlike older phones this one also lets you flash kernels with S-ON. I currently have just rooted the phone over stock so when a method is available I will be able to revert back to stock untampered bootloader in 15 minutes with an RUU wipe then completely S-OFF the phone.

Evol lte doesn't have s-off yet. You can gain root without flashing anything and htcdev is so can install a custom recovery, which gives you ability to flash a rom.
I've been wondering about this myself. I haven't even seen any word on whether anyone is working on getting s-off for this thing. I've been hoping for CM9 to come to the new EVO eventually. Correct me if I'm wrong but don't you need s-off to flash AOSP? If that's the case then they probably wouldn't even start work on it until someone finds a way to get s-off. I just miss CM7 from my OG EVO and unfortunately there was never a fully working version for the 3D. I really considered getting the Galaxy Nexus but I couldn't pass up the HW specs on this thing.

If your hboot is 1.4, you can root with Revolutionary. If it's 1.5, you will have to use the hboot downgrade method, found in the stickies.

It isn't hard at all, if you understand adb. You can root with revolutionary on hboot 1.4 or downgrade if you have hboot 1.5. If you dont want to downgrade try the juopunutbear tool for s-off. It work the first try for me.

Welcome bud, I also got an evo 3d through insurance. Although I think the 4g had a better camera and I miss the looks, the 3d is a lot faster and has a much better screen. I've learned to love it.
Easiest way to do things is follow the htcdev.com unlock process to unlock the bootloader. Install superuser of course, then get 4ext recovery. There is a free version but I would highly recommend getting the paid version as I think it includes the app that lets you control everything from outside recovery. This has a smart flash feature for those who're left with s-on from the HTC unlock and hboot 1.5. It will let you install kernels like you normally would through recovery.
Only problem is, with any sense 3.6 ICS Rom you will have to use chads HTC leak kernel or else you will get boot loops. However 3d and USB mount won't work but you can always mount through recovery.
If you don't want to deal with all that, you can try the wire trick method to get s-off on hboot 1.5 so you can use the stock kernel on sense 3.6. It's stickied here in development. Hope all that helps.

If you don't want to deal with all that, you can try the wire trick method to get s-off on hboot 1.5 so you can use the stock kernel on sense 3.6. It's stickied here in development. Hope all that helps.

Don't misinform. I'm using stock HTC 3.0.16 kernel. Boots perfectly.
EDIT: Didn't read that last part. The reason people were getting boot loops, I believe, was the outdated adsp.img.

Looks like you don't have hboot 1.5 and are s-off...that's why. I was going under the assumption that every 3D is coming with hboot 1.5, and has for a while since I got mine back in november with 1.5.
So did they finally run out of the og evo? They are replacing them with 3d's

Welcome to 3D land. I've been happy with mine and still love this phone.

I think so.
But what I think is funny is that sprint still sells the og, but not the 3d.

The thing about the 3d is that its a way better phone than 4G. Except for camera of course. But I think all the 3d's come with S-on and H-boot 1.5. HTCDEV really helped me out. When u root, try WarmTwoPointThree ROM. Even faster loadup time and comes with beats audio
Thanks for the feedback.. Im not going to lie. I love my ole evo but the last time I dropped it Did something to the Battery. I have a 3500 ex battery that if in the phone it will shut off every 10 to 20 mins. that and the charging port is failing. At least I get another HTC.
