Pulling SMS messages from TitaniumBackup files - Optimus One, P500, V General

I'm trying to find some old messages (early 2011) on my original Optimus -- might actually be the Optimus S -- and I only have Titanium Backup files copied to my computer.
Is there any way to pull SMS messages (to be read on the computer -- not to be restored to the phone) from these files? Example files include:
"com.android.mms-20110814-232219.tar"
"com.android.mms-20110814-232219.properties"
etc.
It was a complete backup using TitaniumBackup, so everything should be there.
Thanks.

If this needs to be in another forum, please let me know.

Alright. This is in the proper forum now. Does anybody know if this is possible?

Uncompressed the file and you should be able to parse it with a text editor using the search function

But what file has the SMS messages in it? I had the entire phone backed up using TBUP, so it should be there -- I just don't know which one it is.

You should have an XML file on the root of your SD card that looks like this if you backed up SMS:
messages-20121101-223142.XML
So, measages-<date >-<some unique number>.xml

This is from an old phone and I have the old TBUP files on my computer. I also have a save of the SD card, but there's no messages XML file anywhere.

[Q] How to edit settings.mkitso file?

I'm trying to edit the settings.mkitso file in Notepad and also by using a File Explorer so that I can enable delivery reports. It is currently set to 0 and I want to change the value to 1 to enable it but for some reason it won't let me save the file no matter what program I use to edit it. Is there another program that I can use to edit it? Please help.

Maybe you need to be rooted?
I'm rooted and I'm running GingerBlur. I still have no luck editing it even though I am rooted. I just don't know the proper way to edit it.
Which messaging app are you using the one that came with GingerBlur or the motorola one?
Nevermind that last post... I got mine to work with the app root explorer.

apps that can save data to file

are there any android apps that can save data to files then copy to folder or sd card? for example, I want to take some notes and save to txt files in notepad and save to sd card.
I found almost none of android apps can save.
any suggestion? can any list some apps can save data ?
Why not just cloud ur notes. They r much safer that way. Especially incase something goes wrong with ur sdcard

how? I can't even find where the data stored in the phone storage. the app simply save a line of data to a sticky note inside it, can never take it out. this means it permanently store in the app and I can only view the data inside that specific app. that is not good.
What kind of data r u referring to

Access to system files?

So I was doing something and I was in a file browser and thought this was weird..
http://db.tt/JaBFFf6l
Just out of curiosity is that normal? On my old phone before I had root, file managers wouldn't even show system files let alone access to them.

I was able to read system on my original Incredible before I had root, and the same with this phone. I can't modify anything, but I can pull files/apps and save them elsewhere.
/data, on the other hand, is a different story. You have to have root to be able to view or modify anything there.

Here is another trivial one. The sense gallery shows my download folder, which has pictures/garbage from all my exchange email I get in the sense email app. Is there a way to keep gallery from picking up this crap, or change where the sense mail app stores/cache's its images? The .no media file trick doesnt seem to work.

Make a file called .nomedia in the folder. No spaces and nothing else in the file name. Just tried it and it works.

Make sure you have a .nomedia file in the folder with the pics. I made a .nomedia file as shown in the attachment, and that picture immediatly got removed from the all downloads section of my gallary. Rebooted and still not there. Deleted the file and it showed back up.

I downloaded another gallery apps and the no media works, however the attachments were still showing from the email app. Maybe the all downloads folder in the gallery is an aggregate of more than just the download folder on the sdcard? Quickpic suits my purposes though.

They don't for me. They are hidden when I put a ".nomedia" in there. Make sure you spelled it right and what you used to create it didn't add some kind of extension to it.

[Q] Custom Notification Sounds?

How do I change the notification sound for SMS in my Rezound? I have a short mp3 file I transferred to the SD card, I then tried to copy and paste that file into the notifications folder onboard the Rezound, but it said something about something being read-only, so it didn't let me paste.
I'm on stock ICS, non-rooted.
Does anyone know how I can get my mp3 sample into the Rezound for the SMS notification sound?

Have you tried this:
To use custom ringtones for your phone ringtone, your alarm or your text message notification, simply copy an MP3 file to one of the following folders: /sdcard/media/audio/ringtones /sdcard/media/audio/alarms /sdcard/media/audio/notifications If they don't already exist, then create a new folder. The file will then show up when you want to change your ringtones. For Ringtones go to Settings - Sound - Phone ringtone For Text Messages go to - Settings - Sound - Notification ringtone For Alarm, set the sound when you add a new alarm - See more at:

maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I tried to finding that folder in ES file explorer and couldn't find it. It shows sdcard and sdcard2. in sdcard, the link to notifications is sdcard/notifications or sdcard/media/audio/notification. However, in the audio folder inside sdcard, there is only a notifications folder, no ringtones or alarms folder. When I pasted the sound to the notifications folders, I still couldn't find my custom sound when trying to change the notification sound in the SMS options.
The method I tried in the OP, was in a folder not in the sdcard or sdcard2, but inside a folder in the onboard phone folders (system/media/audio/notifications), or whatever is the root of the sdcard and sdcard2 folders.

I placed the mp3 file in both directories under sdcard and sdcard2 and it still doesn't show up in the list of sounds for notifications. I think I tried creating the folder in sdcard2, but I think it was already present in sdcard. I notice that those default notification sounds are not located in the sdcard or sdcard folders but rather are in the root folder of both sdcard and sdcard2 under the folder "system".
The directory is /system/media/audio/notifications. I tried placing the mp3 file there using ES explorer, but it doesn't let me paste there as it gives me an error about it being read-only. I don't know how to change that read-only option.
Picture of the error:
You get that error because you don't have root permissions....what version of stock ROM are you using....I'll flash it myself and figure it out for you....if you root and flash custom ROM you wouldn't have to worry about the hassle...also if you root don't use es explorer....use ROM toolbox but keep in mind it requires you have root
Edit: give me a screenshot of about phone...hide noir imei and stuff but just so I can see what version your on

I already had a Notifications folder in the sdcard folder with the mp3 file in it so I just made one for sdcard2. After doing that I went to try to change the notifications sound in the sms options and it appeared in the list. But then I tried to delete the sdcard2 folder to try to see if I can diagnose the problem such as whether the sdcard folder was enough or if I needed the sdcard2 folder as well and after that I couldn't get it to show up in the list of sounds anymore. I recreated the folder in sdcard2 with the mp3, but it won't show up in sound list anymore. I don't know what happened. I shut down and restarted the phone after deleting the folder in sdcard2 as well as recreating the folder and it still doesn't work anymore.

I couldn't find an option to set text tone in the sound settings. All I found was a notifications tone setting, but couldn't find my mp3 file in the list there.
After doing it at first, it worked. So then I deleted the folders and eventually tried creating again and it didn't work. I then tried shutting off and restarting and it didn't work as well.
