System Storage having little space - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I've been getting Storage low messages popping up from the dropdown. I've got 16GB as its the S2 and 16GB SD card too. I know that the system hold 1.97GB but something is taking up 1.67 of this. I've devlivk cahce cleared. Still no joy. I've also been removing ghost folders for past installs and their cache files too, if any. Removed the last few app's too, Just incase!
I just don't get whats running all this up.
I've been looking around the web and looked in many threads here, as you do, not finding something that relates to my problem. I'd wish OPs would use the fourm as forums are ment to be used. Many people just put "help me please" in the title.
Anyway....
Any help would be greatful on this matter. I'm thinking about just hard resetting. But take to long to get the phone back the way i want.
Here's a few details on what I am running, just incase I've missed something in the don't use that topic
Model I9100
Andriod Version : 4.0.3
Kernel Version : 3.0.15-i9100xxlpq
Build number : IML74K.WXLP8
Cheers :good:

The system ROM has only 512MB of space, so it might be that.
Do you have root? If so, then download Titanium Backup and remove unecessary system apps. Also, download SD Maid & CacheCleaner-Ng to remove cache from all the apps at once, and not one by one.

[Q] ok guys a little help here please

i recently flashed rom to my 3d. i did a full wipe and everything but i was told my contacts wouldnt dissapear but theyre gone. also my sd card has 121 mb free but there is only 1 app on it? does that make any sense? thanks for your help.
Your contacts should have backed up to googles servers. Did you ever deselect that option on your previous ROM?
Can you explain the last part? What do you mean you have only one app?
Appreciate my help? Thank me

Your contacts should come back when you sign into your google account and let it sync. No idea about your sdcard.
i cant seem to find out why so much space is missing from my sd? could it be the actual rom itself? the only thing i have on there before using tb to get my apps back is adobe app.
and my contacts didnt come back even after sync.. is there anything i can do ?

I'm going to assume you are using the 8GB card. Umm, you don't have anything on it, like movies or music? Did you create a nand backup before flashing? Those can take up like 1GB of space. Do you use a lot of apps?

nope nothing on it. and yes i did. about 3-4 times. no on the apps.
View the files on your SD card with a file manager. You should see what's on it.

Wait, what three or four times? Log onto your google account four times or make a nand backup four times?

Let me get this straight...
Your taking about your micro sd card right? Is it the 8GB one, or did you swap it?
You say you have nothing on it, but the ROM you downloaded right? Also you say you only have one app also.
Can you view in what's in your sd card?
I'm really trying to understand.

You nand backed up four times? Then that can be the problem consuming all your space on the SD card. About the other one idk.
Did you ever uncheck the boxes in the privacy settings in your last ROM? If not, then I really don't have a sufficient answer for you.
I still can't see how nand backing up would take up all of the space, but with all the given information. Theres not much I can say.

You can delete them. Or move them all to your computer to be safe. Just keep one handy, and restore back to it. You'll probably get your contacts back doing that.
Appreciate my help? Thank me
When you have your contacts back. Go to your Peoples app. Press the menu button, select import/export. Then your going to select export to sd card. Select the export to phone and google options. So next time if they go missing, you just import them.

Do you know which folder they are in? If you do, then you just go to the folder and right click it. Select whatever option your going to do then voila! Your good to go.
Are you doing it by phone instead of using a computer? Just use astro file explorer and navigate to the folder. Long press it to bring up a list of options.
I assume you know how to move them to your pc right?

Try doing a full wipe (factory reset) before restoring the nandroid backup. If you're using the latest version of TWRP, go to the advanced settings menu, and then choose format menu. Wipe cache, data, system, and boot. DO NOT WIPE SD CARD. Then try restoring one of your backups. Make sure you have your phone unplugged when restoring and rebooting (sometimes it can be problematic when plugged in). If that doesn't work, then try flashing a new rom from scratch.
The easiest way to delete your nand backups, or store them to your computer, is to plug your phone into the computer, and choose mount as disk drive. Then navigate into your sd card, and find the TWRP folder, then choose backups, then navigate into the next folder (labeled as your phone's serial number), then you'll see your backups, which are labeled with the date and time they were created. Delete the ones you don't need, or move them to your computer for safe keeping. That should free up a good amount of space on your sd card, as each backup ends up between 800-1500mb.

Big Problem: Infinite Reboot when Apps installed in SD Card

==== Update 20120215 ==========
It seems Galaxy Note also has this problem.
jager13 has posted this issue in code.google.com, so please anyone with this issue comment there so that google devs can know about it and fix it!
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=25563
==========================
I believe that many of us (if not all) should have this problem.
I got so many apps installed, so many of them are installed in SD Card automatically by Android or I manually moved them to SD Card.
(In total I have ~650 app elements in Titanium Backup and keep growing depending on what I have installed or haven't restored at any given point)
The problem is since I updated from 2.3.4 to version >= 2.3.5 even to ICS 4.0.3 LP2, LP6, LPB, LPH.
Problem:
- Power On then phone will reboot after some 2-5 minutes idle and again reboot infinitely so I cannot use my phone at all.
- If I removed my external SD Card, no more reboot.
- Or if I delete some amount of .asec files in ".android_secure" folder (where the app in sd card is saved) in the external SD Card no more reboot.
- And yes, I have done many (if not all) imaginable things: re-flash, factory reset, wipe cache, fix permission, change SD Card, reinstall from market...
- And no, this is not specific SD Card problem.
There is older thread talking about this problem but the thread is about general reboot problem so it got mixed with other kind of reboot.
After trying ICS leaks in a hope that the problem is fixed I find that it is still NOT fixed
and maybe won't be fixed if not enough people complain about this problem.
And I think Samsung developers and QA don't know this issue.
It will be shame if SGS3 still has this problem. I absolutely won't buy it.
So to check this, I hope the reader of this thread to try this (Samsung based ROM > 2.3.4 only):
- Please move as many apps as you can or all of your apps to SD Card..
- Or please install as many apps as you can from market and moved them to SD Card if not already.
- The apps number is not exact (60 maybe more), more is better, maybe related with apps size too.
(I found that when my ".android_secure" folder size in external sd card approaching ~1.5GB maybe more, the reboot problem occurs)
- And then tell here that you have infinite reboot or not in idle mode 2-5 minutes after power on. Please try 2-3 times.
- Also post your ROM/kernel version, stock or mods.
- And please check that removing the external SD Card solve the reboot problem.
Remember that u have to be at least Samsung based ROM version 2.3.5 because this problem is side effect (2.3.4 and earlier does not have this problem).
For us who has this problem, please add your post to this thread to keep it alive
and don't forget to rate high so it will get attention from other users and hopefully from Samsung.
Let's make this issue known to Samsung.
And I hope that people who got firmware leaks from Samsung can tell them about this problem/thread.

On CM9 at the moment.
No issue here..

May I know which ROM/kernel u use?
Are u using Samsung based ROM > 2.3.4?
I have this bad problem. I posted about this problem on old topics and how to remove this problem by return to old firmware with android 2.3.4.
Thank you for opening this thread because It is I think a general problem and the big problem that its happened with ICS. I tried and tried to solve this problem without success but I found that this problem start faster after transfer small size apps.
This problem must be solved, because we need to transfer apps to SD card.
Thanks again dragon135
i can confirm i am another user who had no issues at 2.3.4 upgraded to ICS LP2 this evening and now have this problem! not cool....
Ok flashed lp6 and so far so good

I have had the same problem with the following Samsung Android versions:
2.3.5
2.3.6
I have a SGH-I777 (AT&T Galaxy S II).
I have tried several class 4 and a new class 10 made by Samsung. Same results.
After using App2SD and after moving several apps to SD, the device will eventually reboot right after the SD scan completes.
Removing the SD is the only way to fix this. You can reformat the SD card but the problem will eventually occur when you move several apps to the SD card again. I have been unable to identify a particular app that triggers this reboot.
i have the same problem with my lg o2x. no solution??
exactly the same issue with my Captivate
I moved more than 100 APPs to SD recently. It worked fine with Froyo. The only problem I had is the icon disappearing issue. After switching to GO launcher, everything worked fine. Today I upgrade my phone to GB (KK4, 2.3.5), and started to have the same problem. I have to unmount my SD card to keep my phone away from rebooting. With my wife's card, only data on it, my phone had no issue. Once I put my card back, it starts again.
I can confirm. This issue exists and NOT just samsung firmware. i had the same issue running MIUI. When there are too many apps (my count is 264 apps) the phone will boot, the back of the phone will get really hot and then within 2-3 minutes of booting reboot again to the same unlock or home page screen. And it will keep doing it until your battery is dead. it also drains the battery like crazy!!!
Seriously wtf?
Is there a way to move those APPs back to phone? This is really annoying.

yes, just cut some .asec-files (as many as it needs) from the .android_secure folder an paste them into another folder, so that the phone won´t reboot anymore.
the apps according to the .asec files now won´t be shown in appdrawer.
than you install gemini app manager and move the smallest (if you have not much space on phone) or just some other apps you want back to phonememory. after that you can put the .asec files back in to the android_secure folder, so that those apps appear again in app drawer.
if phone still reboots: same precedure.
like others wrote, and my own experience: abourt 50 files in android_secure folder is ok, more: reboots.
or if you have backups from your apps in titanium:
put sd card in pc. delete all the small asec files, so that in android_secure folder remain only the biggest files. and not more than 50 files.
better only 40. than your phone should work again and you can restore those small apps with titanium, but before that, you tell titanium only to restore into internal memory.
this helps for me. but i really wouldlike to be able to install more apps an sd card! nobody??

As requested I also have this issue.
Seriously considering the downgrade to 2.3.4 despite the aggravation it will cause me.
I transfered all of them to my laptop first and then moved them back ~20 APPs at a time. But then I got the 'phone storage space is getting low' error. Trying to fix it eventually led to a 'factory reset'. I don't have backup for all of the APPs. Without all those junks the phone was very smooth and stable. Once I restored a few APPs and moved them to SD card, I was hit by random shut-down issue but no reboot yet. Finally I figured out why my phone went to sleep almost every night with me. LOL. It happened just after I moved most of my APPs to SD. WTF.

Switching Internal/SD storage between CM7/MotoBlur

So I guess this has been asked but I really need details on it cause it's a real throwback for CM7/9 to me...
So I understand that MotoBlur and CM7 "read" the storage differently, pointing internal/sd to different folders in the system folders.
Now I must say, although CM's way seems more logical, for now, I find MotoBlur more practical. I understand that there is a "Internal Storage only" option the CM7 settings but still, I'm having a lot of bugs with many apps.
Ex :
- With Titanium Backup, I HAVE to move my backup my "Titanium BackUp" folder on the SD Card. If I point the internal storage within the settings as the standard folder, the m***f*** will wipe the current folder of its content. Wasn't so happy when that I happen ("m***f***" explained !); thank god for online backups.
- Many apps that can't change the folders' direction won't be able to read any data from the current folder in the internal storage. I'll HAVE to move them.
- Many bugs in many apps such as PlayerPro. I always leave my Music on my SD. In Motorblur, I'll select only the "Music" folder from my SD and only the music from there will be shown. If I do the same in CM7 with the same set up, I'll keep seeing the music from ALL my sd card, not only my Music folder. Also, playback will stop on several tracks, saying that it can't be found anymore...
So is there a way to switch from CM to MotoBlur and vice versa without copying everything, breaking stuffs, etc. ?
Because honestly, it prevents me to really test CM7. I don't want to debate about which storage method, CM7 or MotoBLur, is the best, although I would only say that CM method is buggy and therefore, less pertinent, asking for way too many fixes...
I just want to know if there is any way to switch quickly with no bugs. If not, I'll stick with MotoBlur until CM9 is daily driver material...
Thanks !
Did you ever read the FAQ?
https://code.google.com/p/atrix-dev-team/wiki/FAQ#SD_Card
Have you tried switching to "internal storage" in the CM settings right after flashing the ROM and before installing any apps? Then reboot immediately? Maybe also select the "Install Location" option to use internal for when you do download TiBu.

I read it but you sir apparently didn't read my post !
live4nyy : Yup, it's the first thing I do. Activate that option then reboot.
Don't get me wrong : it is working. After the reboot, when I install Titanium Backup, the info on the app's main screen show the correct setup. It's just that it is buggy as hell with so many apps (see the op) it becomes a pain to use it.
I think the only way to make it work would be to start scratch : no titanium backup restore, no previous data, etc. But I'm a switcher and I sure won't start ALL over again every time I want to switch back to MotoBlur.
So my question would be : what do other frequent "switchers" between CM7/Blur do to avoid the many bugs ?
I'm also wondering about the other part of my suggestion. Do you select "Internal" as your default app location? Where are the apps that have issues (including TiBu) being installed when you restore them?

I choose "Use Internal Location" but I don't select anything more...
Well, my theory is, depending on where TiBu defaults to (eg. sd-card) when you install it might cause an issue when trying to access it's own files that are on the internal storage. So, depending on where TiBu is being installed might be the cause of the problem??
This is just a total stab in the dark, btw.

[Q] Move apps to sd card on rooted S4

Hi guys, I am running cm10.1.3RC2 (so my device is rooted) and I want to utilize my 32gb SD card. Does anyone know how I can move apps to my sd card?
Also, does anyone know a safe way to re partition my internal HD so I can free up the 8.xgb of data that touchwiz used that I no longer will?
Please let me know if you can help!!
I would suggest buying and download Titanium Backup, an EXTREMELY useful app for more than just what you are asking for. With this app you can move them as easy as this! There are also several free apps that should do just what you are asking: AppMgr III, App2SD, Apps 2 SD. If you use any of those, be sure to read their instructions as the first of those three requires the SGS4 to be updated to the latest ROM first (which I don't think you want to do).
Here is a list of bloatware you can delete to free up some space. Some may take up next-to-nothing, but others may be taking up quite-a-bit. Notice that they are using Titanium Backup to make a backup first, just in case you delete something you wanted to keep or need.
You can also find ROMs like AOSP ROMs, which should help in recovering a lot of that space. But be sure to research, there are always things to take note of (i.e. many people believe the TW ROM has a better quality camera than the AOSP ROMs).

Thanks for the advice! I downloaded app2sd and it says my phone is not supported. Additionally, with the flashing of the CM10.1.3RC2, I deleted all bloat ware, but still only have 9gb available.
When I follow the directions regarding moving to sd from titanium, when I clock backup/restore, no apps show up. I am using the pro version (the free version, not the pay-for version), could that be the issue?
Thanks!
I use "folder mount" as a way to move folders from my device to my sd card. I bought the app.
I'm not real sure if tibu can move them. But, to find out, go into preferences, scroll down to backup folder location and click on it. See where it has your back ups going to. If it is not to your external sd card, see if you can create a path to it. I'm not sure if it will or not, but look at it and see. Other than those two suggestions, I guess you can take the ota update as that is supposed to let you move things to the sd card, I think.
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4
I believe you need the paid version to do most of the useful things on Titanium Backup, I was never ever to accomplish anything with the free version.
You could try gimpy's suggestion of Folder Mount.
Nandroid Manager may let you do something in their free version, not sure though.
You can also try this method, but this will just make sure everything from then on will go onto your SD card (which will act like internal memory).

RootExplorer is free and you can move and rename any folder. I would use this over folder mount just in my opinion. Easy to find your apps and move them right to your extsd card. But there are a ton of options. And for what your talking about on Titanium you have to have the pro version free doesn't let you.

I can't quite understand what your asking, but it sounds like you are running out of space, is that right?
If you are having issues with strange files that you don't know what they are taking up lots of space, I would recommend using TitaniumBackup to backup all your applications with data, then do a data factory reset, then VERY SELECTIVELY restore applications with data, ONLY restore the application data that you are 100% sure about, like games you're playing, contacts storage, SMS storage, things like that. Don't be afraid to restore apps 1 at a time checking each time that you aren't getting a rediculous amount of space being taken up.
Sometimes when things get messy a factory reset is the best thing you can do.
Hope this helps.

Only thing I could find anywhere about it was a random thread from the Baidu forum, which Chinese translated to English via Google makes for an interesting read: http://tieba.baidu.com/p/2336554174 and someone else on XDA that asked the same question but no one answered. Seems like from the Baidu thread that they deleted the files and the phone didn't break. The files inside the /data/core folder were gone after factory reset, and no one was sure what app or part of the system created the files or what they were for.
thank you very much for your reply...i moved those files in other location to see if anything is wrong.... after using some minutes i rebooted my device... the core files didn't respawn... i just freed 387 mb form phone storage..... once again... thank you sir!!!:good:
