[Q] Kernel - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

m facing problems in finding the right kernel for my galaxy S ll ( for rooting ) , whats the correct method , i searched several times but didn't get anywhere close to what this site tells how to find it
my kernel version is 3.0.8 [email protected]#2 SMP PREEMPT Tue may 22 15:00:05 KST 2012
Build Number : IML74.XXLPQ

u dont need a new kernel just to root many other options.

If you only want to root, use temporary CWM to gain root access, search for rachmat3's method.
If you want to install custom ROMs etc, you can root by flashing a TAR version of siyah or dorimanx kernel via Odin.
You can download the TAR version of siyah v4.1.5 from here: www.gokhanmoral.com once done, you'll have root access and a 'safe' custom kernel running on your phone.

If noobs on xda have taught me one thing, its that smartphones just aren't for everyone.

If you have 4.0.3 and want a pure stock based kernel, then use http://www.mediafire.com/file/dpiwi3hskn3qtis/PhilZ-cwm6-XXLPQ-OXX-2.7-signed.zip
It can be flashed through stock recovery and includes root, CWM, Busybox and SuperSU.
The kernel is also brickbug safe.

Insecure kernel vs secure kernel

Hello
I have a insecure kernel installed.
do I need to install a secured kernel?
is there any issues with staying with a insecure kernel?
if I update with a new kernel does the kernel need to be with the firmware I have ie 2.3.5
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk
Insecure kernel just means adb has root permissions, and its not really a problem in the long run as long as it's upto date.
It's best to match the kernel to the rom you are using, so a ki3 2.3.5 kernel with a ki3 rom etc.

I have rooted my phone using the insecure kernel of chainfire and I also obtained the stock kernel provided by him. But, when I load the stock kernel using Odin my phone is just restored and I lose the root. What's wrong there? Any idea?!

root goes through the kernel so putting a non-rooted kernel back on takes away root
you need to search for a stock rooted kernel to go back to stock kernel and still have root

I rooted and kepted an inscure kernel on my phone and had no problems and if you are going to flash a custom rom then it will come with an inscure kernel anyway.

Did you ever find the secure kernel for the GT-i9100? I just rooted my device but I can't find a secure original kernel anywhere. I would like to have root on my phone with a secure kernel. Why is this so far to find? Do most people just operate their phones with the insecure kernel? Isn't that unsafe?

[Q] Rooting stock XWLA4 kernel

Is there a way to root the XWLA4 official stock kernel without flashing another kernel?
I found some threads in the forum but i couldnt find a way without flashing.
My phone specs are:
android version : 2.3.6
Baseband v: I9100XXKI3
kernel v: [email protected] #2
build number: GNGERBREAD.XWLA4
it's easier to just download Odin program then a CF-Root kernal that matches or similar to the one you have, putting phone in download mode connecting your phone, select under pda the cf-root-XX***.tar file and flash. You can do it in 5min. (SEARCH THIS FORUM)
If you going want to be with the big boys you have to be bold.
Search the forums, but the above is as simple as 123.
If all faills (which it shouldn't unless you have a messed up infected computer with a faulty usb cable) then you can just start again and flash a whole new stock firmware + pit file - also information available here in the forum.
Ps. remember to back up before doing it.
There are other methods .
Zergrush etc .
But why root do you need root to run something ???

I ve tryed this before. It didnt work
True. Neither latest zergrush nor the given link for rooting ICS work. Are there any other methods out there to root the kernel despite flashing the CF kernel?
I have stock kernel, stock rom and rooted mobile, I just used a cwm.zip to get cwm then flashed a file containing su and root access
As in the thread;-)

1. You can use any custom kernel of your choice, not necessarily Siyah.
Speedmod, Dorimanx, Dream, Neak kernels etc
Just make sure the kernel you want to flash is compatible with stock ROMs. The ones i listed above including Siyah are compatible with stock ROMs
2. If you are going to flash Siyah kernel, the latest version (4.1.5) will work best for you
Thank you very much, that helped a lot.
And the flashing itself i will do with odin?
i have it on my pc, but does the odin version affect on anything?

You don't necessarily have to use Odin version. You can also download the CWM zip version.
You have two options:
1. Using recovery:
A.) Root your phone with the method in the link you posted earlier
B.) Flash the kernel (CWM zip version) via Odin the temporary CWM recovery
Or
2. Using Odin
A.) Download .tar Odin version of any kernel of your choice
B.) Flash the kernel via Odin.
Thanks. now everythings clear as.. i dont know something.
clear it is.

My vote for Siyah

[Q] Which kernel should I use for rooting?

I'm new to the xda forums, so please bear with my total lack of knowledge on the subject.
This is the first time I'm rooting a phone. I read on a guide here that I need to download odin and a zip file of a kernel. The guide mentioned that the last three characters of my phone's kernel must be identical to the kernel that I'm downloading.
The thing is, I can't find those last "three characters" to search for..
Here is all that is shown under "Kernel version":
3.0.15-1087786

The android version is 4.0.4 (Which I've updated to just recently) and I'm using a Samsung Galaxy SII GT-9100.
So the question is Which kernel should I use for rooting my phone?
You can try siyah or speedmod
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
If you want a pure stock based kernel, use the PhilZ-CWM6 kernel. This kernel can be flashed in the stock recovery, so your flash counter doesn't get effected.
You can use Siyah which I recommend. It depends on whether you just want root for rooted apps or to install custom roms
I believe the thread you're talking about is using the insecure cf kernel.
However since you're on 4.0.4 it isn't advisable to use that kernel since you may be susceptible to the emmc brick bug which will render your phone useless.
What you can do is install one of the above mentioned custom kernels. If you have a particular Rom in mind that you want to install, mention it here so that somebody can recommend a compatible kernel.
Neither siyah nor dorimanx require a particular build ( last three letters you were talking about) they're compatible with any ICS kernel, I have no idea about PhilZ kernel so can't comment on that.
Just FYI, i believe the three letters you're looking for will be found in the build number tab of 'about phone' in settings.

Simply download siyah 4.1.5 tar and flash via odin 1.85 as PDA: done

I want to install the CM9 rom for the s2. (I think it's jellybean 4.1.1?)
My build number is IMM76D.JHLPC
Baseband version is I9100JHLPC
Cm9 is ICS mate..not JB (4.1.1) that's cm10.
If you want cm9 ( older but stable) you can use siyah 4.1.5, if cm10, you'll have to use siyah 5.0 or the latest dorimanx kernel.
In both cases your current firmware doesn't matter.
There are many threads on how to root and get cm9 or cm10. Search and you'll find em.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
You can root using odin-or you can root using recovery.
With odin, thats relying on everything being ok between your phone, and your pc.
Using recovery means no need for pc,you are flashing a temporary cwm which enables you to install su/busybox.You then flash a custom kernel containing permanent cwm(and emmc cap erase disabled).

This kernel works fine with ICS roms. I use it always when i need to root a phone. With this kernel you get root and a custom recovery.
,,,,
trying hoping works well
