[Q] Using a SGS3 technique to change IMEI on SGS2 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My phone's IMEI is stuck at the generic IMEI of 00499010640000, which appears doesn't work for neither my nor my wife's carriers. The EFS folder is apparently botched, because I tried following these instructions - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021 and nothing changed. There was no .nv_data file, only a .nv_data.bak, which I tried using to no avail.
I saw this post for the SGS3 - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1802024
Might that work with my phone? I want to try it, but I don't want to risk making the problem worse.
Also, my phone never asked me for the SIM PIN. Is that normal?

HELP! EFS Cleared, IMEI Gone, Baseband Unkown

I seem to be screwed, my IMEI is gone and now the phone won't connect to any networks and is perpetually searching. I have no backup, is there someplace I can get a dev or dummy IMEI or put it in manually from the sticker on my phone? I need to hook it up to a network, and I think my EFS has been cleared...
I should note that the EFS folder is still on my phone, however the IMEI and Baseband are all blank in the system. Can I repair them somehow?
try http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1264021
I was looking into that, but I can't seem to understand what he means by "Original Shipping EFS". Is that the one generated by Flashing stock 2.1 for T-Mobile? (JFD)
Have you ever changed or touched you efs folder? If not, than your good.

I forgot to update this post, but I kinda solved my own problem. Only caveat is that I edited my EFS too much and now it's lost (on generic IMEI now). The problem was that I actually forgot to set the modem in properly after opening and closing the phone the first time (was checking for a fix after bricking it). I opened it up and firmly set the modem finally getting me a recognizable baseband. I thought of the solution because someone said that it might be a defective modem, which prompted me to check to make sure I put in back correctly after opening it. 2 days of flashing was solved with a simple screwdriver

How to recover IMEI from generic?

Hi guys.
Here`s my problem.
My brother bought an international variant of the Galasy S3, i93000 a couple of days ago from an online auction website. To make the story short, after trying to figure out why the device isn`t connecting to ny carrier, I found that it had a generic IMEI. Go figure, got the same problem earlier this year with an SII.
The previous owner flashed it a few times, as it came with a variant of Jelly Bean, XXDLH8 I believe.
Flashed a stock open europe ICS (XXBLG8) and rooted it but still have the generic IMEI.
I found some threads online on how to rewrite your IMEI code back, since it is written on the back of the phone and on the box, but it only applies to the Verizon version of the S3. I need to access *#7284# and select something that isn`t there on my device. And using a piece of software called NV reader/writer, you edit your IMEI directyly on your phone. It has to be put in the correct form, but it is possible.
My question is, how can we edit our IMEI code on the international version of the SIII ? Don`t get me wrong, I don`t want to modify it all the time, just trying to get it back to how it was.
Sending back to waranty isn`t an option as the previous owner bought it from another country, and also he now refuses to answer my calls.
I`ll have to mention that the device isn`t stolen, it has the Samsung generic IMEI, which wouldn`t be a problem ig it wasn`t blocked by my carrier.
I know have a really expensive device that isn`t more than an iPod. My brither doesn`t even want to see it anymore.
It has to be a way we can restore our IMEI via nv_data.bin and a HEX editor.
You can not be sure that this phone wasn't stolen. Previous user could wipe or modify efs partition to not be tracked by IMEI. Or he just broke efs while flasing and sold the phone because he couldn't fix it.
The warranty is valid throughout the whole European Union, not only in country where the phone was purchased. But you did not write where the phone was purchased nor where you live.
You can serch your internal sd card, maybe there is a backup of efs folder. If not, you can try to use some tools to restore correct IMEI to nv_data.bin from .nv_data.bak (EFS Pro or similar).
You could also try this manual solution:

i9.0.1.3k galaxy imperator
Hi there.
Yes, I can be sure that the phone isn`t stolen as it has all the necessary paperwork to prove it.
Regarding your suggested fixes, I`ve already tried the first one, restoring from the .bak files with no success.
Also I read the second one earlier and I can`r apply it as my nv_data.bin file doesn`t have even have the lines mentioned in the tutorial. It says that I have to edit line 0188008, but my files goes from 0188001 straight to 0188014.
I`ve found a tutorial over at http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f606/tutorial-galaxy-s3-backup-restore-imei-without-root-1513909/ (sorry for the external link if they aren`t permitted) but it applies to the Verizon version (I believe) with the Qualcomm cpu. When I dial *#7284# on my device I only have the 2 sections with 2 options each. UART where I can select Modem or PDA, and USB with the same two option. Because of this, the app NV reader/writer can`t access my device.

No Connection to mobile provider

Hi all,
hope someone can help me. Since this night I am no longer able to connect to my mobile provider. I tested the sim in a different phone and the sim works fine.
When I go to settings, and search for the providers, I get all german providers but when I try to connect, it says it is not possible.
Is there anything I can try? Or could it be that something in my device is broken?
I have JellyBam CM10 4.12 running, but it seems to be not Rom-related.
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks!
Check your IMEI in settings/about phone/status. If it begins with '0044' (do not post your actual IMEI or any portion thereof here !), there's your problem. If that's the case, restore your EFS backup (there are heaps of threads about same on here).
Also, there's always the possibility the phone has been IMEI blocked (assuming your IMEI is correct/OK). If your IMEI is correct/OK, call your carrier & confirm your IMEI is/isn't blocked.
If neither of those things are the issue, I'd do a clean install of stock in the first instance & see if the problem persists. If it does, it may well be a hardware issue. If going back to stock does fix the problem, it's obviously a rom issue; maybe try a completely clean install of the rom you were using & see how that goes.

I tried everything except calling the provider.
My IMEI and Baseband is still visible and ok.
If I search for networks, it finds the networks, but says "Unable to connect".
This happens also with stock ICS firmware as well as with the custom ROM.
Does it mean, that my hardware is broken?
Not necessarily. But call your carrier & ask if the phone is IMEI blocked. It could also be a case of something not setup correctly at their end so far as your account with them is concerned.
That's what's you need to do next.

Whats wrong`????
Well i'm quite disappointed now, I tried flashing various roms (custom and stock, ICS, 2.36) but still no luck.
I also noted now, that I have unknown baseband and no IMEI since yesterday.
I had a backup of EFS folder, but restoring it didnt change anything. Using EFSBackupPro...
Dont know what to do else...pleaasseee help
tgat diesnt sound good
Try restoring stock via odin
---------- Post added at 09:52 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:47 AM ----------
Try restoring your efs folder manually , with a root file explorer, if you have your efs folder backed up on your external SD card copy it to the root directory of your phone
i have restored the EFS folder from my girlfriends phone (just to test, because i have only an img of my backup)
No chance, still no Baseband/IMEI...
Seems to be a hardware issue? Or should I try to get professional help (JTAG?)
Should not be using another phone EFS on your phone. Data are different in them.

[Q] Problem with IMEI, SN and Network

Hey everyone! This is my first post on this forum, although I visit it regularly. However, I have some major problems with my Galaxy S III and I've been trying to solve them since 3 days. Firstly, I want to say that I really did read most of the threads here, but I couldn't find a solution, so I decided to make a new one. So, my phone is not locked, but I realized that I couldn't connect to a network outside the country I live in. I use the same sim card which I use in my country, so I thought I have some roaming problems, because when I got back, everything was alright. I mean, I used my sim card without any problems immediately after I came back. Now I am out of the country again and I faced the same problem with my sim card, which is working on other phones. I tried other sim cards on my phone and I still cannot get into a mobile network. After that, I decided to look around the forum and I realized that I have updated to 4.1.2 two months ago and I probably have problems with EFS since I am with xxemg4 rom. I had an EFS back up on my external SD card and I tried to back it up using ktool, but without any effects. Then I decided to downgrade, I used different stock roms, even modified ones (such as MIUM and CM 10), but nothing couldn't help. Tried ariza patch, tried to patch the modem, tried "EFSv2 basebands" and they did nothing. Everything just got worse. My IMEI now starts with 0049, even my serial number is not the same. I tried to use nv_items_reader_writer to get back my IMEI but it doesn't recognize my phone. Then I tried to use the #7284# command, but my phone doesn't recognize it. I am out of ideas and I dont know what to do. I cannot take my phone to service, because I am not in my country and I dont have international warranty. I welcome every suggestion.

Did you flash any other modem with XXEMG4 rom? ....The modems after XXEMG4(along with xxemg4) reformats your EFS Partition so if you use any modem before XXEMG4 it will not be able to read your EFS partiton and thus your IMEI number also cant be read and it turns it to 0049 which is invalid thus you cant get any connection (mobile data/Calls/SMS etc)
What you can do is flash any modems after XXEMG4 or just flash the XXEMG4 modem itself ....that should reformat the EFS partition and thus your IMEI will be back to normal
Other than that what you can do is flash any rom after the XXEMG4 rom which again had the new EFS format in them.....samsung suddenly changed their plans and pushed these firmwares out with such a format
If you found this helpful why not press the thanks button

[Legal] Change IMEI

by a accident i deleted my EFS file etc. when i was flashing a custom firmware. Then my phone was working correctly except my GSM.
I searched all the internet and i couldn't find a way to take restore my efs. Than i went to a local telephone technical service in my town and he fixed my phone. But i didn't realise he didint use my original imei. I used the phone a several months then suddenly my phone's gsm didint work. So i controlled my imei and it was "004999010640000". And now i need to change my imei number to my original one. How can i do that? i tried "IMEI MAKER/MP0B_001 file method", "MtkDroidTools" and "MauiMETA 3G" and also some other programs. They worked but specially IMEI parts didnt work.

IMEI is send over your carrier database, they check all IMEIs over network, your IMEI probably was banned because used IMEI number from someones lost or stolen phone
