Long story short… I have been very busy for the last 6 months and not been keeping up with all the changes for the CDMA EVO 3D. I am not really sure the best way to get from here to there. I am not a noob and don’t really need my hand held or a dummy’s guide (I have been messing with Android since the HTC Hero and rooted lots of phones and pads). There has been just to many new ways to root and leaked roms…etc. It would be nice to skip all the BS and get caught up with what most people are currently doing.
My current config…
H-Boot: 1.40 s-off via Revolutionary Method
Recovery: TWRP v2.1.1
Rom: ViperRom Redline v2.5 RC2
Would it be better to just RUU back to stock Gingerbread then upgrade to ICS and re-root or is better way to get to ICS with root???? I am not trying save anything on my phone. I am a big fan of wiping and super wiping multiple times before loading a new rom. Also is there any benefit to H-Boot 1.5 or higher?
If this has already be asked can you point me to the correct thread.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If I'm reading right, just search the development forums for an ics rom, flash it and you're good to go. NEVER TAKE OTA
Sent from my EVO 3DMA with a little "Common Sense"
Tl;dr.
Just kidding. I'm running the latest ics rooted Roms on hboot 1.4 revolutionary s-off. I ran freeza's firmware update without the new hboot. This lets me run everything except the new kernel (which most new Roms don't use). If you insist on the new kernel, you can upgrade the hboot too, but you lose the ability to flash aosp and GB Roms.
So, in short, you just need to pick a rooted ics Rom and go. I like zr3dx, Meanrom, homebrew, or common ground.
I also recommend you change to 4ext recovery. It's really nice.

Thanks that was exactly what I needed and I was getting tired of reading all the posts about the VM fiasco, and sticking a wire in the SD card…etc.
You are right it was “Tl;dr” but I also hate threads that go on forever because you don’t have enough info to answer the question.

after downgrading from ICS to GB, my free ram become low from free 380mb on ICS to 222 on GB
Well... After an issue with the digitizer in my phone I had to finally have it recently replaced. I had recently loaded the ICS OTA and actually for the most part liked it alot. I have rooted and done some roms with my 3d when it was Hboot 1.4 with Rev S off and root method. But my phone is currently Hboot 1.5 after replacing it. I havent loaded it to the OTA for ICS. But im trying to decide what I want to do. Id like to root and S off if I can and find a Rom/OTA that works great with the best performance and options with reduced bloat. ICS is pretty cool that I used, but seemed like some bugs with it to. Any suggestions of help on getting me there and in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Ive done some searches here and there on the forum. But really after taking time out for a medical issue I havent been in the loop til now. Thanks ahead of time for any help and suggestions you can push my way.

Here's what I would do in your situation:
1. Do HTC unlock and flash 4EXT recovery
2. Backup current ROM so you have a nandroid of GB stock
3. Root GB stock ROM and do JuopunutBear (wire trick) with GB version to gain S-OFF
4. Flash 2.89 RUU.exe to get solid Sprint ICS base (firmware and software)
5. Flash Jbear Sprint ICS (1.58.5858) or engineering (ENG) bootloader
6. Flash 4EXT recovery (via fastboot flash recovery.img)
7. Backup current ROM so you have a nandroid of ICS stock
8. Flash whatever ROM's you want to try and check them out
If all the ROM's you are interested in are ICS Sense, then the JB Sprint ICS bootloader is fine, but if you want to flash and run GB and AOSP ROM's the ENG bootloader is a better choice, but it won't run the 2.89 stock kernel.
That's one opinion.

Thanks Ramjet. What are you using or have you used? Is ICS the latest? Any other good stuff out there?
If anyone else has suggestions or preferences Id love to hear them.

The Sprint ICS 2.89.651.2 release with Sense 3.6 is the latest official build, but there have been several CM10 based ROM's released using the AOSP 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) base, and some Sense 4.0 and 4.1 ROM's that run on the E3D.
My favorites are still MeanROM ICS 2.6 and SOS M 2.6.1 which use the same base. Here's a post I wrote back in May that enumerates the fixes mikeyxda had done to the VM leak base at that time and most of those fixes and enhancements were transferred to the Sprint ICS 2.89 based version, with some new ones added. SOS M is de-Sensed and offers a lot of customization built-in and via the Aroma installer with a minimal amount of effort. Both ROM's are fully functional and have good reliability, performance and battery life.
I've tested a lot of interesting ROM's with some unique features including Paranoid Devil with a tablet configuration option and Charmander with Sense 4, but they both have some stuff not working, including 3D and WiMax/4G. If you don't need those features you might also want to try some of the AOSP ROM's (CM9, CM10 and MIUI) since they are very light and clean, and a lot of the current development activity seems to be with those ROM's. If you want a full ICS Sense 3.6 based ROM with a lot of mods integrated, Cool ICS is worth a look too.
ramjet73
Thanks Ramjet. Im gonna check out the MeanRom ICS, SOS and Cool ICS. In past ive liked a sense based rom but Im open to other stuff. My main thing is wanting as few as issues or non working things as possible. Even the OTA of ICS has to muc issues. But the in general feel and look was good.
Thanks for the input and direction. I may hit you up on some advice if thats cool? Thanks again.
Just use the search function to find all the info on the stuff above Ramjet? or is there a good central location that might have links for everything?

Ok So I got it unlocked. and installed the APK of the 4EXXT recovery. But its giving me some issues saying I need S-off before I can use it? I assume its a program that runs on the Phone not a recovery like ive been used to with the boot loader? If its a flash that flashes the boot loader i seem to be having issues finding it. How do I need to go about rooting? Is root the same as S off? Its been a while since doing all this kinda stuff and just getting back into it. Thanks for any direction you can give me.

This post by mpgrimm2 (part of his overall guide) covers flashing a custom recovery (like 4EXT) and superuser from the PC command prompt via fastboot. Those are the two steps required for rooting, after you have HTC unlocked.
Once you've done that you can move on to gaining S-OFF with either the JuopunutBear (wire trick) or Hboot downgrade method, which is setting the security off for the NAND memory of your phone, and allows you to flash more stuff and not have to use the fastboot command to do it.
It's probably time to move on to the Q&A forum since this has changed from an advice thread into a help thread.

Firstly, thanks to everyone who contributes to this site. It has started me on a great journey of playing with these devices, starting with the Nook Color last year. Now I have a Rezound (trying to S-Off), and a new Nexus 7.
I have unlocked the bootloader using the HTCdev tool. I'm unsure where to go from here. I have the Hasoon2000 s-off tool, but it seems I need to root the phone. I haven't found any instructions for getting me through the rooting part. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can advance?
Thank you very much,

+1 sorry i dont really want to start another threat because im kind of the same situation. My phone is htcdev unlock s-on h-boot 2.10 (yeah i know)
Amonra-recovery custom Rom. I want to s-off but my question is. Im i good to go to s-off how my phone is right now or do I have to change H-boot? and if I do which would you recommend?
Go to:
http://androidsu.com/superuser/
Download the latest download for ARM. Devices. Flash via recovery and you will be rooted.
HTC Rezound
You need to flash a recovery and use it to flash Superuser or SuperSU. Hansoon2000 has a different all-in-one toolkit for the Rezound that can help you with all of that. It's linked under the sticky thread in Development. There's also other threads with manual instructions for the steps.
Thanks for your help, everyone. I was able to get things working correctly, and installed ViperRez 1.0.3. Very cool indeed!
Edit: I ended up going for the CM9 stock build instead. I really don't like Sense much, and much prefer the stock ICS interface.
Jeez I feel like an idiot for posting, because I've been reading threads and such for well over an hour but we've always been told there are no dumb questions right?
Ok, so I rooted my original EVO with Unrevoked years ago and have been happily flashing ROM's, radio's and the like ever since.
Now I've got a new EVO 4G LTE and I'm thinking I can come home today, root/s-off and be on my merry way flashing SuperJelly. Apparently, it's not quite so straight forward?
I've read the sticky thread how to root, etc but I have HBOOT 2.09 so it looks like LazyPanda and the like are not options to get s-off. There's even a thread on how there's no exploit for HBOOT 2.09 yet.
There's still much confusion in my brain about where to go next...
Unlock bootloader with HTCDev?
Then flash TWRP?
Feeling very NOOBish, but better to ask than to brick.

This is a very "Yoda" moment happening here... Thanks Capt.
Hm. I remember seeing this today, but I went back an re-read the article. It might be worth waiting for an HBOOT 2.09 exploit.
http://www.pocketables.com/2012/12/...es-for-rooted-s-on-htc-evo-4g-lte-owners.html
Unlocking your bootloader now is not gonna hinder you using any exploit found for hboot 2.09 almost certainly.
Basically I would advice not waiting for an exploit if you wanna flash a few roms

I'm gonna need to do more research on this because I'm not understanding why s-off is such a big deal on this device if I want to flash SuperJelly or MeanBean (which has s-on instructions) if all I have to do is root.
Frankly, I want SuperJelly for the GPS and camera improvements.
I gotta get this straight in my head so I don't end up posting a "help, I just screwed up my device" post.

Soff is necessary for the firmware upgrades (you are on the latest so as of now no big deal) it also make flashing a custom kernel a lot easier with no extra steps(source has not been release hence there is no jb custom kernels so no worries there at the moment) if all you want to do is flash a rom for now just htc dev unlock flash a custom recovery and you'll be good to go until an exploit is found

Thanks everyone for your words of encouragement and info.
I just got my new Virgin Mobile HTC Evo V today. My previous device was a Samsung Galaxy-class phone (Infuse 4G), so I'm a bit lost with all of the HTC-specific terminology and procedures. All I've read seems to be written by and for people who already have some idea of what's going on. Sadly, I don't.
All I know is that my Evo V is on Hboot version 1.57. I basically want to put it in a state where I can flash ANYTHING I want, which I assume means that I'll need to be S-off with a custom recovery. Do I absolutely need to dowgrade Hboot? Must I be S-off? I just need an initial push in the right direction. If someone could give a brief synopsis of exactly where I need to start, along with some links to the corresponding tools, that would be very much appreciated. I hate feeling like a newb all over again, but hacking HTC doesn't seem to be nearly as simple or intuitive as it was with Samsung. I'm fairly adept at following directions, I just don't want to follow the wrong ones and do something stupid.

Since you have an Evo V you might want to start here. There are no forums that are specific to the Evo V on XDA.
I do have a guide here in the general forum that works for getting root and S-OFF on the Evo V.

Same hardware but not the same firmware and network configuration as was confirmed by Sprint users who flashed the "leaked" VM firmware last May. The custom ROM's can be configured for either carrier but not the firmware and the serial numbers (ESN's) are hard wired to a specific service provider.
Also, Virgin Mobile users also don't have the roaming options that Sprint offers.

Gotta love a long and convoluted process that involves a lot of downloading. At the moment, I'm visiting a relative who doesn't have internet, so my only web access is to tether to my now-throttled data connection. Got about 6 more hours to go before the QADERSO download finishes. Thanks for the help so far. I took a quick peek at the htcdev site and unlocking procedure. I noticed that they don't have one that's VM specific. Should I just use the Sprint one when I get to that point?

Yes, you can unlock the Evo V 4G by selecting the Evo 3D on the htcdev website.
I don't consider downloading an all-in-one file "a lot of downloading" and if you think my guide is "convoluted" you're welcome to use the collection of guides that preceded it, including several on the other site that I linked above.
I've unlocked Samsung and other phones before and I know about the "one click" root utilities, but that's not the way HTC does things so we need to deal with it or stay stock.

It's quite a simple process, but it is a fairly long process. Takes about 30 minutes total to get unlocked, rooted, and running all good. Add that to getting ROMs and stuff. That totaled up to 3 days for me because I just could not find the best one, and I've found that Viper3D is great . Getting a 8000-9500 benchmark.

Well, I didn't manage to bust it out in 30 minutes, but I got it done. Probably wouldn't have taken quite so long if I were less inept with command prompts. The "wire trick" was simultaneously simple and a huge pain in the ass. I spent probably 15 minutes doing it over and over and over. But all's well that ends well. I'm now HTCdev unlocked with S-off, and I'm running NegaLite BluROM. So, thanks, ramjet73, for the advice and putting your time into writing the guide.
I do have a few general questions still:
-what will absolutely need to be flashed with fastboot; kernels, radios, alternate Hboot versions?
-as far as having some semblance of universal compatibility, should I be fairly safe sticking with Jbear's Hboot version 1.57.5757?
-is there another Hboot version I could flash that would be more likely to be compatible with the vast majority of available ROMs?

I usually recommend the JBear GB 1.50.5050 hboot. It will flash and boot all ROM's except the stock ICS ROM and one or two based on that version, as opposed to the 1.57.5757 version that won't boot any GB or AOSP based ROM's.

I've never been much of a fan of Android version 4.x. I just stumbled on what appears to be a very promising Gingerbread ROM, so it looks like I'm going to have to downgrade to Hboot 1.4. I'd assumed that since the phone came with ICS, I'd be stuck with 4.x. Apparently, that's not the case. I love me some GB.

Just be aware that all the GB ROM's are based on Sprint builds and as a VM user you will need to figure out what needs to be changed to get things like MMS working properly on the VM network.
I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, just be aware that it will take more than just flashing the ROM and you can get more help with the Evo V on the androidforums.com website in the forums for that version of the device.

Yes. The JBear 1.50.5050 hboot will flash and boot anything that the 1.4 or ENG 1.04 hboots handle and is based on a more current version of the Evo 3D bootloader. It also allows you to run more fastboot commands than a stock hboot like 1.4.
