Hello everyone,
I have received my CDS CD1000 phone. Looks and works great but sadly I noticed that it does not come with the Play Store installed. Also it's not rooted. Does anyone know of available information about this phone about custom roms, rooting and installing the Play Store?
Here a link to a site with some general info: http://www.gizchina.com/2012/09/06/galaxy-s3-clone-mtk6577-with-45-inch-hd-retina-display/
Would love to hear others opinions and findings about this phone.
Thanks for reading.

Hi G64,
for rooting you should try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
The latest version of the script can be found in the first posting. Bin4ry did excellent work here. It should work on most MTK6577 phones and worked for my B92M which has Android 4.0.4 and MTK6577, and I heard from a lot people with MTK6577 that it worked for them too.
After rooting you should be able to install the Play store by yourself with the help of ES File explorer and PhoneSky.apk (the latter one is the Play store) - just google for it, there are quite a lot tutorials for this task around the net, e.g. here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1582422
The tutorial implies that there is already an unmodded version of the Play store installed in the phone, maybe it works anyway. But be sure to rename the Vendig.apk to Phonesky.apk before installing, as told in page 2 of the link above.
I am interested in the phone, too, so please be so kind and answer to the following questions:
1) does it have dual sim support? Your link says only one sim is supported.
2.) battery size in mAH?
3.) does it really have (about) 1 GB RAM?
4.) does it really have 1.2 GHZ?
5.) could you please tell me the AnTuTu benchmark score?
Thank you very much.
Hi asskicker,
Sorry to get back a little late. I don`t have the phone here atm. Do you know perhaps if i can install that Play Store thing on a NOT rooted phone ? Because the most important is the Play Store.
I`ll try to answer your questions here:
1) does it have dual sim support? Your link says only one sim is supported.
- It has 2 SIM slots
2.) battery size in mAH?
- Battery says 2100mAH
3.) does it really have (about) 1 GB RAM?
- I can`t install Apps a normal because it lacks Play Store at this moment (for Antutu).
4.) does it really have 1.2 GHZ?
- I can`t install Apps a normal because it lacks Play Store at this moment (for Antutu)
5.) could you please tell me the AnTuTu benchmark score?
- I can`t install Apps a normal because it lacks Play Store at this moment (for Antutu)
When i can install the Play Store i am happy to post the questions ant further. But i need to have the phone first so i can try the Play Store install.
But if you know that the Play Store installer can also be used without Rooting than it might be quicker to have the info.
BR
Hi G64,
thank you for the answer.
I am pretty sure that it will not work to install the Play Store without rooting the phone. But rooting is really easy if you follow the link in my post.
About the RAM: Android will tell you the free & used amount of RAM if you go to settings -> apps -> active tab. The two values will tell you the complete amount of RAM installed.
@GaMeR64 - Did You root'ed phone success or not?
I'm very interresting answer for @asskicker question 3, 4 and 5
Unfortunatly no. People can't miss their phones for like 5 minutes these days
Do you know if GPS works ok?
hello , i have this item about 4 weeks and its real fine
all works great , better build and hardware quality as the star b92m or my umi x1 ( No GPS on this devices , and netwok suppot real poor )
this thing for moment price round 170 $ , is the best alternative on dual sim sector ... which have MTK 6577 :good:
i ordered here : http://www.aliexpress.com/item/4-5i...core-1GB-4GB-Dual-camera-5-0MP/668733010.html
really good seller , but others have the phone cheaper at the moment .
sorry for my english
greetings
@dynamo4ever - why CPU freq on screen max is 667MHz??? antutu result test with this freq?
How long phone work on full charged battery?
Some new (and proofed) informations about the phone. I'm very interested in this phone.
I've just ordered one from here:
www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181036120686
£117.86 GBP.
The ebay advert says it's Dual Sim and judging by an earlier poster's screenshots it supports two sim cards as the notification area shows wifi + mobile reception + airplane mode (for the other sim).
I was about to go for a Star B92, but I'm hoping this phone works out better as it has 1GB ram instead of 512MB and better GPS.
If someone could post a step-by-step guide on how to root and install the play store app that would be awesome.
Thanks!
This phone goes by another name Chigon A720. I think those who are interested can find more info searching for Chigon A720 as there seems to be a russian community owning this phone
Mine finally arrived today. However I forgot to order micro sim -> sim adapters so have been unable to test the phone side of things.
It seems pretty fast, the 3d graphics are not great but for non-gaming use it's great. The screen is clear, nice and bright. Good resolution.
The touch screen works well to, better than i was expecting, no problems typing on it at all.
The phone is definately DUAL SIM as there has been some confusion. The two sim card slots are on top of each other.
The GPS works great, I just went snowboarding and used alpine replay to record my tracks with both my Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and the CDS CD1000 / Chigon A720 and the results are very similar. Neither device lost GPS position. Out of the box the GPS took almost no-time to get a fix.
The speaker seems OK, music was listenable to, but suffers from the usual lack of bass as every phone I've ever had has done, no suprise there.
I made a call using Skype and CSipSimple and the person on the other end could hear me just fine.
My regular 3.5mm headphones fitted without issue.
The wifi and bluetooth worked just fine, i could connect to my home router and pair with my other devices quickly and easily.
The device came with Android 4.0.4 and had the Play Store already installed along with AppCloud, a chinese app store. I disabled the latter without issue.
Everything I've run on it so far has worked perfectly.
Very happy with it so far, total bargain for the money - however bear in mind i've not tested the dual sim functionality yet. I will post again once i've had the chance to test it.
hi;
my phone arrived last night. I have a problem. my phone's flashlight is very weak. it does not take any photographs in the dark. Even the display light is better than flashlight. there are no images in the darkness. all of the cd1000 are the same or my phone is defective? can I improve light intensity with any programs. how can I fix or repair? if I take a new flashlight led, have be compatible with the phone? does it work? Is there someone who can help? sorry for my bad english.

Just following up on this thread now I've had the phone for a while.
Had no issues with the phones, it's still working great. I have installed a french SFR and a UK GiffGaff SIM card in the phone, one card in each slot. The dual sim functionality works great. Both sim cards are on-air all the time.
The battery life is great. I leave wifi and 2g/3g on all day and it's fine.
It also survived an accidental drop onto a wodden floor from hand-height just fine with no scratches to the casing.
Overall I'm still very impressed by the device. It's a total bargain.

Hi all,
i have the phone here now and have tried to get GApps installed but i can`t get it fixed. I have also installed the latest PlayStore but that immediatly quits when opened. For this i found we need the GoogleFramework that is inside GApps. But how do i install this ?
I also found a guide that said to extract all the *.apk`s from the downloaded gapps zip and then copying them to the device and then manually install them. Doesn`t work. It just says: App not installed.
Do we need Clockwork Recovery Mod to get into recovery or is there also a "Normal" Recovery ? I tried to get in recovery mode with Power button + Volume down but then i enter Factory Mode (not recovery mode) and this has no options to install something from Zip (which Recovery Mode should have i read somewhere).
Hopefully someone here can point me in the right direction.

and there is no Jellybean for this device as i have checked
i was thinking to buy Zte V970 MTK6577 which has lower resolution and battery but comes from popular manufacturer and it has Jellybean ports already

Hi to all.
Has anyone tried it or is aware of any review on Easypix Easypad EP970? I am thinking on buying one, since specs look very good without me being an expert on CPU performance data (9.7 capacitive, Rockchip R2918 1.2Ghz, 1Gb, 8Gb, 8000mAh, Gingerbread) and price is rather low for these specs.
Also, does anyone know of any custom ROM for it? The source code is readiy available from their site so I guess someone with knowledge can do it easily.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
unfortunately this tablet is not focused from many people - the price and specs are fine - i would say the closest competitor is the Archos Arnova 9 G2
better specs vs better screen for 240€ - i would like to see a video about the quality of the easypad 970 screen
Android 4.0 for Rockchip 2918: Link
Thanks. So, am I right to assume that any Rockchip 2918 9.7" based ICS or Honeycomb ROM would do for the Easypad as well?
Talking about the Arnova 9 G2, it looks interesting indeed. Slightly slower CPU, one camera less, slightly thicker, but 50 Euro less!!
On the Arnova's downside, no mention on the battery capacity though (will be hard to beat Easypad's 8000mAh), and worse of all not avaiable for sale as yet.
I guess Prestigio will be coming soon with a similar model as well.

There would be still a ROM portation nessecary to adjust certain aspects and implement certain driver. But at least it should be simple for experienced Modder.

Yeah at beginning next year there will be some very similar and interesting devices in the low budget area.
Archos Arnova 9 G2; 10 G2
Easypad 970,
Prestigio
and also Coby Link
For now the Archos has the biggest community, i think root is already possible for Arnova 9 G2, because of the similarity to the Arnova 10 G2. Maybe next year other devices will be community or company supportet as well - unfortunately no one can really say.
Interestingtimes ahead then.
I think it is wiser not to rush now and wait for next year. Let's see.
Thanks
the easypad970 seems to be a good purchase now
Link
its identical to cube U9GT2
therefore easy to root and Android 4.0 final release is coming soon
Happy new year.
I got the 970 a couple of days before the new year. I couldn't resist the temptation when I had it in front of me. I also bought one for my bro as well.
Already I rooted it with Gingerbreak (minor snag after that, during shutdown, but workaround by another app), loaded with apps, and tested on dlna multimedia servers, etc etc.
Generally happy with it. Now is about time to experiment with ICS. Just to confirm that I can use a U9GT2 ROM without a problem, even though this one has 8Gb NAND instead of 16Gb of U9GT2?
Sorry for the noob question
BTW thanks for the links. Great help!!
grz - i got one too its cheap, good performance, good quality, and has a excellent display
i would recommend to change the Launcher and the Keyboard, to e.g.:
Go Launcher Ex and Hacker´s Keyboard
for Gaming install Chainfire3DPro and within Chainfire install OpenGL Driver
for Gameloft Games, like Order & Chaos you need to change the build.prop (\System): Link (Thread #8)
HardKeyboard + Mouse + USBStick work also fine
and yes - you can use the Cube u9gt2 ROMs - the USB Driver doesnt work as fine as the
970 but it works - with a installed cube ROM u need to use a RKManager to switch off the Tablet,
then press Volume (-) + Power keep pressing and put the USB cable in the computer, then
the Device will be recognized from the RKManager und you can take away the Fingers
Thanks for the good info. Congrats on your new gadget!
Will try games etc, but at the moment I am trying to find the best calendar and contacts apps in order to sync with Outlook and keep the categories, and some networking functions.
There is something in the German forum that you kindly provided the link, that I need to clear up: "richtet 1GB anstatt 500MB für Apps ein". Google translation implies not clearly that if I use the Cube ROM, it gives me 1Gb for installing apps instead of 500Mb as in Easypad. Is that correct?
If so, out of curiosity then, any ideas why Easypix gave us only 500Mb (which have almost run out on mine and I am also using Apps2SD)? And where does Cube take that extra space from? Is it from the NAND Flash memory which it has double than ours? If so, then we Easypad owners wouldn't have any problem with half the NAND and even then reduced by another 500Mb? Or is it just too trivial and I shouldn't bother about it? Because I need that 1Gb badly

Hey,
I'm one of those germans with an Easypad 970
Well I upgraded my stroage for Apps from 500mb to 1gb without any problems. I think the Cube U9GT2 Rom upgrade changed the partition sizes too. So we will lose 500mb from the normal NAND flash an can use it for apps.
greetings
yes its a decision for the ROM maker between more storage for the system or for the user - i really prefer 1GB for Apps
I would recommend the new Cube Firmware 1.05 = Android 4.0.3 (Source), i tried this one out the whole day and im very pleased. It runs very stable, has 1GB for Apps, flash works and some Apps look really good with ICS.
for Calendar - i use "Jorte" and youtube is here
Good.
I am also thinking of installing this specific firmware (or any update) by next week and hope by that time someone will fix the adb issue.
Did you notice any improvement on battery life?
no unfortunately i didnt notice any improvement in battery life, and in the next days we will see probably some more ROMs so there is no need to hurry
Hi, I also have the Easypad 970 and very pleased with the quality of the screen and overall speed of the tablet. Unfortunately, it seems there are some devices (like mine) with faulty/bad WiFi chips and this is a real problem. Currently, trying to get it fixed with easypix support and respons is OK so far. Tomorrow I will try to get an RMA for it.
Hi all,
I like to have some of you guy's opinion bout wich phone to buy. I do this work where i constantly need 2 phone's, and have a high need of fast GPS connection.
At the moment i'm using 2phones, one is an old school nokia for my work, the other one is my main phone, Galaxy S i9000.
I fixed the i9000 with a hardwaremod so i have superfast gpslock (bad connection back cover)
So now you know what my priority's are, i like to know what Cellphone you guys choose of the two:
Galaxy S duos (Price in my cellphone shop 300euros)
- 1 GHz Cortex-A5 processor
- resolution: 480 x 800 pixels (4.0inch) 230ppi
- ics pre installed, upgradable to Jellybean
- 4 GB storage, 768 MB RAM
- Camera 5 MP, 2592х1944 pixels with flash
- 1500 mAh accu
--> easy rooting, i know samsungs interface and love the fastness of the gps.
Alcatel 997D: (price in me cellphoneshop 220euros)
- 1 GHz Dual-Core Cortex-A9 CPU
- resolution: 480 x 800 pixels (4.3inch) 217ppi
- ICS installed
- 4 GB storage, 1GB RAM
- Camera 8 MP 3264 x 2448 pixels with flash
- 1800 mAh accu
--> no root know yet cuz this is a brand new phone, dunno bout gps speed etc.
My max is 300euros for this phone, so i would like to have some opinions from other people, cuz i'm a bit of a samsung fan
i love to play with my phone, so rooting is prefered, but i dunno if the dualcore rapes the samsungs single core
kind regards,
Robin

I have the 997D and I'm very satisfied. It has much better specs than the Galaxy S duoS and it is also cheaper. Go with the alcatel.
I had the same doubt and I've finally gone for the Alcatel, but I can still understand people who would choose Samsung Galaxy S Duos instead. Let's take a look at the pros and cons of each one:
Alcatel OT 997 D:
Pros:
Dual core processor
1 Gb RAM
Cheaper (around 100 euros cheaper than Galaxy S Duos)
Splash proof coating (called P2i)
Cons:
Low resolution for such a big screen, Although, as in Galaxy Nexus, since it has onscreen buttons for home, back and menu on the bottom, resolution is a bit less than the stated 480x800
Worse camera and led flash, although not bad at all
Samsung Galaxy S Duos:
Pros:
Awesome screen quality
Samsung has already included this phone in the list of phones which will get an upgrade to Android 4.1
Awesome camera and led flash
Cons:
Very expensive, too much in my opinion, given the specs
Single core processor
Just 768 Mb RAM
It's really up to you, but well, I don't have to tell you I'd go for the Alcatel, since I have already done so.

Mine is waiting at the Post Office at the moment (I live in Spain and it came from Germany) so I guess I'll be able to get it today or tomorrow. I'll try to root it right away, and I'll post to report if I can get something from it.
I haven't been able to root the phone yet. It looks like it's rootable if you keep the stock firmware it comes with, but if you install the latest firmware via OTA update (as I did) there's still no known method to root it.
I tried SuperOneClick, Unlockroot 3.0 (recently updated) and "Root with_Restore by Bin4ry v15.7" (which can be found here at xda) and none of them worked. I guess we'll have to wait. If we had a working Clockworkmod recovery, maybe we could use Chainfire's SuperSU zip, which I succesfully used in the past on other phones. I tried signing it, and then tried to flash it using the stock recovery, but there's no way to do such a thing, since the signature verification always fails.
Another good reason to buy Alcatel OT-997D and not Samsung Galaxy S Duos: the battery.
On the Alcatel, battery can last up to 2 days of my normal use (1hr. talking, around 2 hrs of music and 1 hr. of playing every day), and, according to people I know who have purchased the Samsung, on that one, battery lasts a little longer that 24 hrs. with a similar usage pattern.
Is 997D able to move apps to SD Card
Just purchased a Galaxy S duos with ICS, and finding it has some severe SDCard memory limitations. Had seen some people complaining about this on Forums and GSM Arena, but didn't realise how serious the limitation was until experiencing it myself:
1. 4G internal SD specified, only 2G available
2. Mass storage mode not available, only MTP and PTP. I see from the 997D Q&A that it may still have this feature.
3. Unable to move apps (and therefore associated data) to SD Card without rooting.
4. The pre-installed Navigon maps stores maps on internal SD card, which will preclude use in US or Europe where maps are much larger than my home country Australia.
5. Only apps that appear to use external SD card are inbuilt music and camera. Presumably many larger apps or games will not be useable on this phone. Sony music unlimited will not offline sync with the external SD card, have read that spotify won't either.
6. Seems to be a general issue with latest Samsung phones, but at least the likes of S3 and Note 2 have minimum 16GB of memory to play with, 2GB is just not enough.
7. As an aside, I'm also wondering if the 997D supports DLNA out of the box ?
Wondering if the 997D has the same memory limitiations ? Thinking of returning the galaxy s duos and trying to source a 997D (not easy from Australia).
I'm generally happy with the galaxy s duos, performance is as expected, size, screen and dual sim function are good. However, getting somewhat concerned that I will run out of SDCard storage very quickly with these limitations. Already consumed more than half just by installing basic applications I need for my job.
Looks to me like Samsung should not be selling these ICS+ android phones with anything less than 8GB of available internal memory if they're not able to install apps onto the external SD Card.

The 4GB you talk of also include internal storage, so you'll never get the full 4GB for user data, and the same applies to 997D and almost any other Android phones. Galaxy Note II doesn't let you use the full 16GB, either.
And now, the other questions:
997D has mass storage, MTP and PTP modes.
Apps are moveable to the sd card, regardless of the root status
The external sdcard is directly mounted under /sdcard, so no problem with GPS navigation software or any other apps.
I think 997D does support DLNA, but I can't be sure, since I haven't tested it myself.

While I realise a lot of cheaper android phones have restricted internal SD card space, now that Samsung or Google (and assume other vendors will follow suit) are restricting ability to run apps from the external SD Card with ICS and above, 4GB (less whatever the system takes up) is no longer enough for even the most basic android phones. Shouldn't have to root the phone just to load a few apps, maps or synchronise some music offline from a streaming service.
If available, 997D is looking like a much better choice at this point than the Samsung S Duos.
Hello guys !
After searching the online shops for a new android phone i found this dual sim Alcatel, really nice hardware for this kind of money , unbeatable i´ll say ..
I have some questions for you about this phone because i never used a dual sim phone before .
So , can you tell me if the dual sim thing affects the batery usage more than a non dual ?
Another question is about the ´´onscreen buttons for home´´ .. how is it compared to the ´´standard´´ hardware/touch sensitive buttons ? i´m wondering about touching them by mistake when you´re using the phone on browsing/gaming etc .
Thank you in advance .
Of course, having two sims takes more battery power than only one, but I can confirm, since I've been using this phone for a month now, that battery life in the 997D is more than adequate. I'm using the two sims everyday, and with moderate use (2 hrs. of music playback, some 3G browsing and about 1 hr. talk time everyday) mine lasts for almost two days.
Anyway, are you gonna use one or two sims? If you just use one, it doesn't matter how many slots the phone has, since it will only be operating one sim.
By the way, my usage also includes having the mobile data on 2G most of the time, since things like whatsapp don't need much bandwidth to work. When I really need the speed to browse the web or get an app from google play, I switch to 2G and then back to 3G when I'm done.
Yes, you can press the onscreen buttons by mistake, but that happens rarely. And they are as good and sensitive as the screen, and the screen on 997D is very good.

I don't think e-compass have that much issues. If you're talking about erratic orientation to the north, most phones and especially tablets get this prob due largely to the magnetic covered cases on their devices, just like the protective case I have with my Galaxy tab, doing away with my magnetic case when navigating solves it. You can also fix its orientation by getting a compass app with orientation calibrating features.

BTW I had the exact same problem as the OP.
I already have a Samsung Galaxy S3 I9305 with 2 GB ram and now in the end I bought the Alcatel for my GF since she wanted dual sim. I don't regret at all, I can assure you it's a great phone!
The screen is of course not as good as the Samsung flagship phone, but it's very decent. If I had to choose again between the Samsung Galaxy S Duos and the Alcatel, I would not hesitate a second! (And I'm more used to Samsung for everything: phone, tv, microwave etc)
The Samsung Galaxy S Duos is a rip off and a huge mistake IMHO (Too expensive, not enough ram and only single core). The Alcatel clearly wins compared to the Samsung. It boots very fast too (even faster than my S3). The battery is fine too for a smartphone and will of course always depend on what you do with it.
Furthermore the Android version running on it works very well and fluid overall. The stock contact/call apps seem to work faster than on the S3 and have all needed features (On the S3 sometimes there is a slight hesitation to open them). Crazy if you think about it. The Samsung own added software isn't that great actually if you look at the performance (feature wise it's fine of course).
I'm really a fan of Samsung in general, believe me! But the S DUOS is not what it should be at all!
EDIT: Now I think of it, there is one advantage of the S DUOS: the physical buttons. The virtual buttons make the usable screen a bit smaller unfortunately My S3 is clearly better in terms of available space on the screen.
But this is a non issue for this class of phone and I suppose on the S DUOS the screen size would disappoint a little as well when I compare it to my S3. Using the buttons however is not a problem in my experience, it's only the screen space that it takes away that "bothers" me.

compass is fixed on latest vBF4-0 rom version.
Opinion after two months of use:
-smooth operation
-very good job dualsim
-very good job GPS;
almost all tested navigation
-battery with an average load can withstand two days
-seems immune to injuries
I hope the updates to JB 4.1
Value for money and work performance seems very beneficial.
This is my next dualsim, and I definitely recommend it.
I very eagerly await the next dualsim Alcatel Idol X
Hello everyone...
Today i saw galaxy s3 replica. It was almost 99% same as the real. It was android. The thing is only the play store was in chinese but i downloaded aptoide on that and installed many android apps which worked without any problem. I installed go launcher zedge application whatsapp viber skype everything worked fine and the price of that phone was $150 only. Even when i inserted my sim into that my GSM network sent me the setting of GPRS & MMS of Samsung Galaxy S3. In about phone it was written galaxy s3. Android 4. something...
I just want to ask one thing that can we install Samsung Stock Firmware on that ? So we can get rid off chinese play store? And some other chinese apps which are unable to delete. So it become like real s3 ?

I have a few questions about this:
1. Where did you see this?
2. Did it say anything about specs? It could have a terrible processor and such.

No you can't flash a Sammy firmware to that.
They have different hardware (I'm not talking about the looks).
And you could try installing the play store apk. ( might not work, you should try pushing it into system/app if that doesn't work, needs root to do this )
You will need to Root 1st to remove all the bloatware from the phone. ( don't ask me how to root, search around, try any universal rooting methods which might work and don't hold me responsible for whatever happens to your phone)
i suggest that you don't buy these Chinese phones, they might look attractive, but deep inside, they might have put all crap and non working stuff.
No support from either the manufacturer or devs here. Nobody to hear you when you're in trouble!
LIFE! IT'S WHAT YOU MAKE OUT OF IT!

Look at your screen, it'll definitely be the same size as an S3, but with a much lower resolution. Chinese devices, both phones and tablets usually have a max resolution of 800x480, compared to Galaxy S3's 1280x720. Compare your phone to a real S3, you'll see the huge clarity difference. Also 512 MB RAM instead of 2GB and a dual core processor instead of quad core. I'd say you got a bad deal. You can get branded, good quality Android phones with better specs for a little more price. Like the person above said, don't buy Chinese devices. They're ultimate crap.

It seems that our phone market here (in Croatia) has recently been updated with some brands i haven't seen before - Gigabyte and Prestigio. I know them as tablet and/or computer peripherals manufacturers, but i haven't really known that they also made phones.
My friend bought a Prestigio phone a few months ago and he is satisfied with it, although i can't get any detailed infos from him since he only uses it for calls and angry birds when he's on the toilet
Today i noticed two Gigabyte phones that are both packed with features and seem to be a good bargain, considering price and what is stated as phones' specs. Here are the two ones i noticed:
http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=5400&idPhone2=5401
I'm wondering has anyone had any experience with these phones? For the price, (a little more than €200 - a really good price for that kind of phone here) they almost seem too good to be true. I was also wondering what's the real difference between the processors? Both of them have 1gHz dual core, but the Rio model (cheaper and weaker) has Qualcomm MSM8225 Snapdragon, and the more expensive Maya model has MTK 6577. I have heard of Snapdragon before, and i think it should be a good processor, but i have no information on the latter one.
Oh, and maybe it's good to note that the cheaper, Rio model comes with android 4.0, with no possibility of upgrade, and Maya comes with 4.1
Anyways, what should I expect of these phones? Should I consider buying any of them at all? Did anyone try to root them and put any custom rom on them?
also, this model popped into my eyes... also a gigabyte phone:
http://www.gsmarena.com/gigabyte_gsmart_gs202-5174.php
I bought RIO R1 yesterday so its quite new for me, but as I used many android phones I can compare it quite well.
I can compare it to htc desire, wildfire s, sensation and many others
so the biggest problem is battery drain, but Im used to charge battery often so its not so big deal for me.
problem is with headphones, only the ones packed with phone works ok, but I will try more of them (htc headphones start music application and radio is only mono)
phone is little bit laggy but Im trying to get rid of apps I dont want.
root was easy done in 5 minutes and the most of the time was used for searching for right drivers and software.
I found CWM but its for A30 and phone does not show anything in recovery mode. I tried [email protected] but got nothing. I will try to search and play with it.
both sim cards work great (only one sim can be used for hi-speed internet, second one is only on edge), you can choose the time to choose from which card will you call or use predefined.
you can set own ringtone for every sim card and if you get sms or call you can see on which sim card.
I installed all apps from my htc desire and its much faster but I have problem with my favourite launcher - action launcher. I will try nova launcher as I have paid version.
Im waiting for 4.1 or higher or maybe I will also try to compile it for tests.
***UPDATE***
Hey Guys for new readers we have accomplished the following discoveries in this thread:
-Verified 128GB sd card works
-Verified Kingroot can root the device
-Verified straight talk works with this
-A firmware update was released that puts google play services and google play store on the phone
-The Battery has issues after 50%
-Linsk2SD works but some apps failed, and some apps act weird,I will update this post with link however my time is short today, Halloween parties!

Good Evening!
I have never (or at least I think that's true) made a thread on here and this is my first time actually logging in other than making an account I've had for a little while. Anyways I ordered this much W3D gaming phone back in 2015 and it was cancelled and I was sad. But when I went back on aliexpress to order it again, I asked the same vendor that told me the company failed (I have that message screen capped lol) told me it was rush shipping over to the US. Fortunately for me I love throwing my money away, but this time I was in for a treat.
I. Love. This. Phone.
Now then, how do I help out this awesome community with the phone? How can I help rip it and copy it online so you guys can play with the software and packages? It's a very bare-bones version of 4.4.1 and has a ton of added features you would see in xposed. Like it seamlessly converted my 128gb mico sd card to it's main internal storage and I didn't do anything! I best of all unlike 6.0 the sd card is totally free and accessible from windows explorer. Unfortunately I have only had it for a short while and haven't tested everything yet. Also I'm sorry if this is the wrong place like I said I've never posted before
Hey Gatekeeper,
Your not the only silent fan of the snail W3d device, I have been waiting for updates and ordered the device myself ... I'm glad to hear that your enjoying it. Keep the fans updated with your personal review of the device.
1.) how does it handle graphic intensive Android games? ... my only fear is that the mobile GPU is slightly outdated.
2.) How does it handle emulators?
3.) Is there any exclusive games in the built-in snail mobile app store?
Thanks for sharing.
So, this is where the silent fans of the phone are meeting. Any updates about the device will be highly appreciated. Also, if you are having an issue with Google Play Store. There is an International firmware released for the phone that installs in. You can find the firmware on OPENYOUREYES SHOP website.
Nice pic collage by the way!
I am really excited about this phone as well and will be most likely picking one up myself. I did want to ask to see if anyone knew what options there as far as cases for this phone.

None at all officially. You'll have to improvise. I currently own the Snail W1 (W3D Predecessor) and I use a PSP Vita foam pouch to carry it. Not much for protecting it, but it keeps the body free from scratches while in my pocket.

By the way, GATEKEEPER. you stated that the phone seamlessly converted your 128 GB card to internal storage. I have some questions for you. There have been concerns involving SD Card usage with the phone. Are you able to move apps and games to the SD CARD?
What brand of 128 Micro SD Card are you using? (SCANDISK, SAMSUNG, etc) What's the Class? (CLASS 4, 6, 10, etc). These specs will greatly assist since I have heard different reports.
Also, do you have a backup of the original firmware 4.4.1 that came with the phone? The device specs describe the phone has 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 installed?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
I have this phone by 2 weeks and for me it's awesome. I must admit it has many flaws, but despite everything I love this phone.
After 2 weeks I can say this:
PROS
- Awesome screen
- Great 3d effect. Awesome in some videos
- Awesome buttons and analogs. (Maybe L and R buttons are difficult to press)
- Nice materials
- It's a great smarthphone. Signal and wifi are very good (I'm in Italy)
- Great Performance. Runs at full speed:
- psx (fpse)
- nds (Drastic)
- dreamcast (I recommend Reicast less-video-stuttering build, because google play version its bugged and slower)
- psp (PPSSPP)
- gba (Retroarch gpsp)
- MAME (Retroarch mame 0.174 with all 2d games works great. 3d games need frameskip)
- FBA (Retroarch fba. CPS3, CPS2, CPS1, Neo Geo, Psikyo, Cave, PGM ecc...)
- DOS (Retroarch DOSBOX. I have Shadow Warrior and Blood at full speed. It takes a lot of time to set keys but after that are great games to play in this device )
- All other old consoles that their games can work also in my fridge
This for emulators. Android games that i have (All runs at full speed with all buttons mapped without problems):
- Dead Effect
- Dead Trigger 1 and 2
- Return to castle Wolfestein 4 android
- Doom 3 4 android
(What android game i can try for benchmarks?)
CONS
- Long. I can put it in most of my pockets but for someone can be uncomfortable
- L2 and R2 are not recognized by apps and from snail touch screen mapper.
- Some apps like Retroarch see left and right part of buttons as 2 different gamepads. I can solve this problem with snail mapper but it's annoyng
- Snail Launcher crashes every time. I had to install Nova Launcher
- Micro SD permissions problem. To install some apps (mame4android, doom3 4 android for example) i had to unmount the micro sd. Sometimes I can't save photos with the micro sd mounted. (Someone know how to resolve this problem?)
- Battery. The battery it's unstable. I can play 3 hours and the battery go to 100% to 50% but after 50% the battery go to 25% in 5 minutes. Maybe i only have to calibrate the battery. If i use only phone functionality, battery life is 2-3 days.
- Price. I paid 400€ and I think since the delay of the release and the old hardware, snail have to lower the price.
In conclusion I recommend this phone because it's a unique device and I'm sure that if you like emulators, you'll love it.
The problems that I listed, apart from the size, in my opinion can be solved by firmware updates, or with the custom roms.
I hope I was helpful. Sorry for the English.

What's the model number for the battery? I'm wondering if you can purchase another and have one pre charged since you can easily take the back off.
Yes I think that i can buy a new battery but maybe i found the problem. I see that micro sd scanner has removed 30% of battery
I discovered that Retroarch download all thumbnails (boxart, title screens and screenshots) for every platform game! I was thinking that download only thumbnails for game that i have. So I had 10 000 images in my micro sd and media scanner every time I changed files in micro sd, did a new scan. Now i have put .nomedia file in retroarch thumbnails folder and disabled media scanner with adb.
I hope that the problem was that for the battery.
For micro sd permissions i see that is a kit kat problem, so i make changes to permissions.xml and now the camera works every time but I can't install yet mame4android and other apps that want to access to the sd card with the sd card mounted.

Yep, very helpful, many Thanks! Did you buy from OPENYOUREYES SHOP?
From what I have heard, the Pros and Cons are very consistent. There are many apps that can more than likely keep the battery optimized. Greenify seems to be one of the most popular, but there are many others. See what works best for you. I found one place that sells the battery, but I am unsure how to order from there. Check TAOBAOFOCUS.COM. Search for the phone, and you will see the battery along with it. I checked with the Aliexpress reseller, but he doesn't have extra batteries for it.
I may also ask OPENYOUREYES Shop and see if they plan to sell the batteries.
As for the mapper, I would suggest using Tincore Mapper. It will map all buttons, and also give you extra mapping abilities, like mapping the d-pad on King of Fighters instead of the analog stick. It does have a bit of a learning curve, but it's worth it. I use it on the Snail W1.
As for the SD Card, still trying to figure that one out. I don't yet have the W3D, so I'm not able to try some things. Hopefully, there's some trick to getting it to work, which is why I am hoping The Gatekeeper responds. It may only work best with certain card speeds and classes.

Also wanted to ask, are you in the US? What carrier are you using? How is the coverage? What numbers are you getting on speed tests?

I'm in Italy. Here the phone works very well. I had no problem with the GPS.
I haven't done benchmarks. Which app do you recommend to test the speed?

For your benchmarks can you use Antutu and for speed test can you use Ookla
Hey guys I have been using a Straight Talk sim card and it makes calls and data works great. I had to activate the sim card online and manually change the mobile network settings, but after a few reboots it was working great! And honestly for a long phone it doesn't feel too awkward when making calls.
I appreciate all the feedback and it fills me with joy knowing other people have had a chance to use it as well. I plan on making a few youtube videos that covers a general overview of the phone and then the fun stuff like a compilation of emulators and of course game stream while in downtown atlanta on cellular and wifi.
oh and sorry guys but to answer your questions regarding the games install on internal or SD I still have yet to install the play store with that firmware and plan to do that tonight. Under settings there is a storage option that allows me to pick which is the default write disk, as the menu is titled. From there I select the SD card and it has been filled up ever since. I have installed apk's via sideload and I don't see the "true" internal storage space depleting after I did that. Now I still see some apps installed there. I want to see if in the future we will be able to use links2sd since that's what my xperia play uses for it's folder redirection.
I'll be answering questions soon gents so stay tuned.

By the way, GATEKEEPER. you stated that the phone seamlessly converted your 128 GB card to internal storage. I have some questions for you. There have been concerns involving SD Card usage with the phone. Are you able to move apps and games to the SD CARD?

I will take a picture of the settings menu and explain in more detail what I meant by that. It appears we can change the default write disk to the SD card, which is what I guess it asked me as a pop up when I put an sd card in it for the first time. Like I said previously this does NOT lock down your sd card, and in fact this phone offers three different computer connection methods either as a storage device, or as MTP, or for photos, along with charge only function.
And for your second question it appears that some apps downloaded were placed in internal storage and I could not move them :\ I did get my phone's firmware updated with the google play store (awesome!! thanks guys for the recommendation for that! I saw the video but wasn't sure if it applied to me) and I attempted to root it, and I think it worked. I will now test links2sd and see if that helps with the internal storage part without needing to unlock bootloaders and get too messy with extra work.
What brand of 128 Micro SD Card are you using? (SCANDISK, SAMSUNG, etc) What's the Class? (CLASS 4, 6, 10, etc). These specs will greatly assist since I have heard different reports.

This is exactly what I purchased:

Also, do you have a backup of the original firmware 4.4.1 that came with the phone? The device specs describe the phone has 4.4.2 or 4.4.4 installed?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

***Quick Update!***
I installed links2SD and so far all but youtube moved to the SD card, making my internal storage from 9 to 11.27 free space. I tested the google play store and services since those are major apps that got moved and it works fine!

Awesome! Thanks for the update! This also confirms that 128 GB cards work in the device. Link2SD was a Godsend for the Xperia Play. When I first bought it in 2011, I ran out of space within the first week.
You can verify your root with Root Checker. If not, I used Kingo Root to root my 78p01 device, so it should work for the W3D as well. The downfall to using Kingo is that it needs to be installed on your PC, and it installs some battery app on the phone and lockscreen that I think is tied to the superuser app that's installed. The root works fine, but after the root is installed, you would want to install another superuser app to grant permissions, as to get rid of the battery app tied to the Kingo superuser app and delete it.
I am currently using AT&T with my 78P01 and they are stating that my IMEI is classifying the phone as 2G only, and as such, I have been only getting 2G, where I used to get 3G, even 3G+. Not sure what happened between now and a few months ago, but must have something to do with their 2G shutdown. I may grab a Straight Talk Sim for a month and see if that changes things. Thanks for the confirm on Network. That had me concerned as well.
I look forward to any more updates you may have.

Hey guys I wanted to also add some truth to my claims and add a few pictures, for clarity purposes. I took a picture of the straight talk sim card in the back of the phone, along with the sd card. Then I took a picture of the speedtest to show you that, albeit it's not very fast 4G, it does achieve speeds that still allows gamestream to play at the minimum settings. I'm around wifi and hotspots all the time but sometimes in sushi bars I just use the data. I forgot to add but I added the storage settings of the phone, notice the "default write disk" and the options to select the sd card and internal storage.
I used kingroot to root the phone, and installed rootchecker to verify root. All seems pretty jive!

Sweet! I missed the Straight Talk Sim in the pic, lol! I read your post and had to re-check it, but I saw it. Those 4G speeds are like heaven compared to what I am getting now. Heck, I will be happy to just have a decent connection since I am only getting one band of 2G at the moment:crying:
Thanks for the update as always!

I'm pretty excited mine was just shipped out and I'm ready to get it in my hands. Would any one mind doing an Antutu benchmark on the device. And also does it come with NFC?

Hi,
I did the test with my W3D. It isn't a little too low the result of Antutu? For now I haven't found Android games that give me problems.
The biggest problem remains the battery. After the 50% drops too quickly.
You have this problem with your W3d?

Honestly I think I do too, but I have kept it charge above 80 since it sits at my desk charging most of the time. When I take it out and let it chill in the car the battery runs out much faster than it should. Maybe there are settings we need to disable on the phone? I also don't think it has an nfc, I'll have to look at the specs again but I don't see it as an option in settings if there is supposed to be one.
