[Q] Import *.csv - telephone number format - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
is there a way/app to import contacts into my S3 (CM9) out of an *.csv file, without loosing the telephone number format?
While importing, android currently changes the format of my telephone numbers like:
+49-xxxx-yyyyy --to--> +49 xxxx/yyyyy
or for several numbers:
+49-xxxx-yyyyy --to--> +49xxxxyyyyy
I don't want that!
Thanks for your answers.
P.S.:
1. I know google and I've searched there already.
2. Please DO NOT talk about "Google Contacts"-sh**. I'm trying to avoid google contacts by importing a .csv file directly. I think google does not need to know my relationships and connections. I love my data to be private.

seems odd it does it in two different formats. I thought they have a default format and all numbers are stored the same way even if you put spaces and all sorts

I think this happens when it doesn't know the area code.
+49-37208-yyyyyyy --to--> +4937208yyyyyyy
And it shows up another behavior for the "area code" of cellphones in Germany like 171, 170, 160 a.s.o. In this case it also make something like this:
+49-171-yyyyyyy --to--> +49 171 yyyyyyy
The question is how to switch this completely of. I don't want my telephone numbers to be reformatted.

A few issues

Hiya
Firstly, may I say what a great resource this forum is!! I've learnt a lot and I've only had the XDA for just under 2 months!
SMS storage, is anyone closer to finding out where this is stored? I have managed to locate the messages you send OUT in the windows\messaging folder, though it's only the actual text and doesn't contain any of the timestamped stuff etc. I cannot for the life of me find where the inbox for sms should be. I know others have had similar problems.
Cleartype, I have it enabled and it looks great, but it doesn't seem to appear everywhere. ie the Today screen. I did have a program (I think it might be Pocketblinds) but I found it unstable to the point where I would turn off the pda part, then back on again to find that the custom start menu icon had disappeared. Grrrr. Does anyone know a way to make cleartype effects appear on the today screen? I've tried putting a reg entry in various places of the registry for it but to no avail.
Also, if there is a way to bind together numbers and contact info for incoming SMS messages, presumably the same would apply for outgoing ones. Does anyone know of a program to do with sent items as sms_name by paragon does for inbox entries?
Thanks in advance
Anthony
in the database 'pmailFolders' lookup the desired foldername,
then open that foldername as a database.
these folders have names like 'fldr10019e7', these likely different
on each machine.
This may seem a stupid question, as I say I'm new to the XDA and hope to start writing programs for it soon (I've been a programmer for a while but not in this style)....
how do I open it "as a database"? I've tried going into Databases and selecting it but i cannot drag it to the desktop or open it in file explorer on the phone.
Cheers
Anthony
If you are interested in enabling celartype (any many other enhancements) you should check pocket facelift.

[Q] Beginner questions about contacts

Hi,
firstly, let me introduce myself:
My name is Tony and from my signature and amount of posts, you can see, I am a very active XDA user and used to do a lot of first and second level support for the blueangel and the blackstone and today my SGS2 arrived, which is my first native android phone. As soon, as i figured out all the tiny beginner's questions, i will start supporting this awesome device for all you fellow users out there.
But for now, excuse me, that I have to ask a few stupid questions that I encountered while setting up the device:
1. My phone is set to English (US) and my keyboard and voice input options are set to German (so that writing or voice inputting sms and german addresses are easier). However, Vlingo does not exactly support the dual language and sometimes produces problems when reading out english information, anybody else experiencing mixed language problems there? any advice?
2. i decided to set my up contacts from scratch. i put in all the correct formal names for my contacts, but when i connect these users to their respective facebook accounts (who are sometimes based on nicknames), the display name automatically changes to the facebook name, while i prefer the formal name. is there a way to change it?
3. contacts allow me to add several im accounts, e.g. ICQ. when i click the icq# of a user, it opens up im and states that only windows live, google talk and yahoo are supported. is there a way to either connect that to the official icq for android, or add other messengers to the stock im? if not, why bother inputting all the information, if one cannot use it?
i wonder why nobody else seems to experience problem #2.
i found it again here: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6067
apparently, when you connect contacts through one or more platforms, like facebook, twitter, last.fm, skype... and there names vary, your contacts app will always prefer the last name with the latest letter in the alphabet. in my case, there is one contact first name r. last name b., but one facebook, he goes by another variation of his name, "zu b.", so contacts prefers the facebook name, as z is greater than b. there is no logical reason why facebook names should be preferred to the phone's own stored name. after all, i entered those names because i wanted to find the contacts by that name. why does the phone tell me, my choices are no good and facebook's are better?
strike issue #1 and #3, i will find a workaround some time, but it would be extremely nice, if someone could check if this contacts issue is present in their device and firmware?
i have ke7 dbt (latest german stock rom).
My nexus one does the same thing. If I sync contacts with Facebook it changes to their Facebook displayed name. I'm still not clear on exactly how it does it too.
i tried several ways of bypassing the issue, starting by assuming the sorting of contacts would be determined by the regular ascii order of letters, or linux's, so i tried renaming every contact to minuscules, so R.B. -> r.b. which didn't help and i wouldn't even bother starting any contact with z or any symbol, as that would render the letter navigation bar on the right useless.
so the only way i could bypass the issue was to sort and display contacts by first name. after many years of windows mobile use i'm having trouble getting used to it but apparently, there is no other way so far.
if anyone else has trouble with this, please go to http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=6067 and star the issue and post your experiences.

How can I edit contacts in batch?

Hello, I must edit all my contacts to remove area code. My new mobile carrier doesn't support it. I've tryed export it from google to csv -dos, csv outlook. Then I edited with Excel and removed the numbers, but when I try to import it, everything went wrong, without any configuration/
Does someone know any app that to this job? Or someone know how must I proceed? Thank you !
hey
why don't you define in excel maximum digits as the length of your numbers?
for example if you have this number stored:
Eytan
10123456789 (1 is the area code)
execute in excel so it saves the last 10 digits so it'll apear like this:
Eytan
0123456789
you should limit the numbers of characters in a cell.
i actually don't remember the exact steps but i'm sure you could find it with search, it should shorten your "work".
good luck !
You should be able to export from Google as CSV edit in Excel then reload as CSV
actually I tried all those things, and when I try to export it again to google, I lost the previous settings.
I found a brasilian app "operadora DDD" and it does the job! It´s in portuguese, but u can acess the app, then UNCHECK "ativar", and press menu on your phone. U must chose "alterar agenda", click on the number and try every option. when u check some box, the number change showing your choice (with/out " ( ) ", "-", "+" etc)

I used to use Contacts Clean-up by Peter Baldwin, but that is not compatible with newer versions of Android. If you have access to an older phone, you could use that to edit them and then resync to the new phone. That's probably what I'm going to do tomorrow...
hmm, this is interesting and yet frustrating. I'm also in need to edit my contacts in batch, especially to change the area code and include a country code, but it seems that the .csv that I've edited cannot be read by google contacts.
anybody can get around with this?

[Q] Export contacts with full info - vcard 3.0 - ZERO application found

Hello all, please help, i'm going slightly mad - running KK and trying to export some contacts using the stock export function in contacts - problem is that the generated vcf is in 2.1 format. This is not good, the export lost some info, such as custom labels of phone numbers.
Then I tried to found an app on the market that does that - not ONE have i found. All of them either do the export in 2.1 format; or they backup on the cloud; or send the contacts by mail; or use proprietary format.I just want to backup my contacts with all the info on my sdcard and be able to restore them.
what's strange is that the stock import contacts knows how to read 3.0 vcards and that I was able to do this thing I'm looking so hard now on my ancient SGS1 running GB.
Now, is it a conspiracy, or something? Please, help.
Please, can someone help me?
To recap - I want to backup and then restore offline my contacts. The problem is that custom labels of phone numers are lost - if I have a contact with a number labeled as "challet no.", this label will be replaced by "home" label at a restore.
Please, help.
Please, somebody have at least some ideas? I find very strange the fact that this basic functionality is broken .
Some corrections:
- there was a typo - it's not KK, it's JB running on a Note 3
- only custom labels of the phone numbers which contain blanks (at least) are not saved
What puzzles me is that nobody reported this problem, and of course the fact that an old GB release is able to better handle the backup/restore functionality.

Same boat here. Using proprietary vCard format 3.0 and trying to do the inverse way from you. I'd like to backup the VCF files locally to regularly import them into my Android devices. The problem is that apparently Android 4.2.2 can only handle vCard 2.1 properly. I have found NO solution so far since there seems to be no software or app that convert between the two formats - vCard 2.1 <=> vCard 3.0, without data loss. I believe that reason for this is that everybody just uses Cloud services nowadays and support for local data exchange in general is neglected or non-existent!!!
In case you find any solution for your problem please let me know. Any information would be welcome!
UPDATE: I spent again a lot of time playing with my vCard 3.0 files yesterday and I finally found a way to format them in a way that Android accepts them as contact imports without errors. By using a text editor - UltraEdit, and some simple JavaScript scripts to batch process all my 434 contact entries I basically made the following 4 adjustments:
- Remove all unnecessary entries included by my proprietary contact application - Lotus Notes
- Include a line breaks before the "PHOTO" line
- Remove all line breaks that occurred when a entry value was too long and broken into multiple lines
- Remove all semi-colons in the "ADR" line
I hope this helps!
Here is the best solution for export contacts in Vcard format. Vcard Exporter tool is the powerful tool for Converting Outlook Contacts to Vcard and gives you the idea how to Convert Outlook Contacts to Vcard.

[Q] Save contact to SimCard

yeah, i know there are many threads about this topic, below is some of things need clarification and some questions
and just recently paid my attention on this "Contacts" thinggy, and realise that i have tons of duplicate in my Gmail (why the fack its synced to Gmail?)
need clarification:
-so, does newer devices cant save contact directly to SIM?
-we can only use "Export to storage", but that is in vcf (or some format)
-in order to copy all contact from phone to SIM, we must use an app in Playstore (how useful is this app anyway?)
-the contacts in SIM need to be exported to phone
question:
-why do you all think that theres no "Export to SIM" support?
-if i save a contact, does it automatically saved in phone? does it sync to elsewhere? (i dont like this sync-y thinggy)
-what is "phone only, unsynced", does it referred to the phone memory and if i saved a contact it will be in phone?
yes, im asking on how to configure about saving a contact and its relevant question
and sorry if some part is messed up, i got big event next week and kinda nervous about it
Device : GT-i9100G , CM 11 Nightly 20140520
thanks
