Help! Questions to solve using the CM10 rom - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am new to the forum, just flashed the stable CM10 rom from stock JB.
I am wondering a few things:
1. How do I get visual voicemail like the stock version used to have?
2. How do I email out to my GMail groups like I used to be able to do under Contacts in the stock JB rom? I use this feature for my workplace all the time and I can't believe that the function would be removed in this rom.
Thanks
S

Noob trick for rom choosing: Look at the ROMs viewing, downloading counts and thanks counting. If there are too much people have downloaded, and thanked that ROM is OK.

[Q] Which ICS rom & kernel are the best?

Hi I just recently unlocked and rooted my rezound and am looking to install a custom rom. There are so many ICS roms out there and I find it hard to sort through them and find the best one. I would like to know: Which ICS Rom is the most stable, which ICS Rom is de-sensed the most, if the rom updates the mainversion, and which ICS kernel is the best (and where to download it. Thank you for your help!
All the Devs list bugs in the first post of the from thread so read that carefully before flashing anything.
For stable....I would run Clean Rom ICS by Scrosler or Nils Business ICS if you want full-sense stable along with a bit of the theming done.
As for Senseless...I have been running NewtoRoots Senseless and it has been running awesome for me. The main issue is inability of sending/receiving MMS but I'm using GOsms in the meantime until that is fixed. One of the users packaged the rom to flash the kernel as well if you're not all that comfortable using fast boot right now. In this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=22435498
Most of the ICS roms will update your main version unless you flash the kernel (boot.king) via fastboot. There is a how to in the Dev section to revise you main version if you wish to go back to GB.

Thanks for your help! I was actually considering flashing newtoroot's senseless, but just wanted to see if any other roms were any good as well. I will probably flash senseless tomorrow. So when I download the rom, it will automatically flash the kernel, right?

Actually most if not all all the devs have changed the main version to the OTA version number.

Yes they will supply the kernel also. Some devs include it in the rom zip, others have it as a seperate dowload. You wil have to read the first couple posts in the thread to see what it says. Follow the directions of the dev is the best advice.

Just being safe about the main version thing. People tend to get all wild over it even though there is an easy fix for it but thank u for pointing that out

[Q] Questions regarding root and MIUI install

Hi. I have decided to upgrade my samsung galaxy s2 with miui. Since this is my first time flashing an android device I have a couple of questions.
Firstly, is there a reason why I shouldnt install miui on my phone aside from the void warrancy?
#do I get the warrancy back if I unroot and unflash before I take my device to the service?
Next, i have read that i need to root the device first, before i can install miui. Is that true?
#which kernel should I use for that?
I have heard that siyahkernel Is the best. But on the xda thread it says it isnt compatible with any ICS roms. Will it work with miui 4? Is this thread a root at all? I can only assume it is because it has cpu/gpu oc/uc and ov options...
Also, cfroot Has a big and detailed thread. But this one does not support rom manager. I'd need to use cwm for flashing. Is this a problem?
So with which kernel do I go?
No, use a jig too.
Use Cfroot.
What? You don't need rom manager, not sure what you're getting at here.
I'd recommend using a gingerbread version of miui as it's your first time. Gb is stable, ics isn't 100% there yet.

Good choice going with miui, however I wouldn't use the ics versions at the moment as they are buggy. I would personally recommend wiui latest gingerbread version as it is stable as hell and works with siyah.

Thanks for the reply. But:
Whats a jih?
MIUI install guide (miuiandroid(dot)com/community/threads/how-to-update-upgrade-miui.15424/) says to use ROM manager. But I suppose cwm does the same thing.
I've read somewhere that the last sgs2 miui version is based on official 4.0.3 samsung files. Shouldn't that mean that there are no bugs aside from the ones which are also found on samsung update channels?
I really mainly want miui because of ics, and chrome browser. I have no interest in voiding my warrancy so I can stay on gingerbread. The better UI simply isn't worth it. So you suggest I wait for official samsung updates? (I do want the better UI...)
Thanks for the reply!
Cheers
No, miui ics introduces several bugs of its own despite being based on samsung rom.

A jig resets your "Custom binary counter", the thing that counts how many times you've flashed a rom/kernel/whatever. Samsung will see its above 0 and may, or may not, said that your warranty is still void.
If you're really that desperate for ics, go for it. Just make a Nandroid backup with CWM incase you don't like it.
No, it's still buggy, but it is still really good & can be used as a daily rom, I would think.

I wouldn't say that I am desperate for ics, but I am pretty sure I will install miui at one time anway. I don't like the cartoonish icons of touchwiz. The question I think right now is, whether I install ICS right now, or should I wait for ICS to become availabe on KIES and install miui later. (I suppose they'll fix the remaining bugs than)
Also, does anyone suggest a different rom than miui, which is better for some reason? I like eyecandy, but I do want performace as well.
Thanks for your answers.
Cheers
Edit:
If I do upgrade to ics and miui. All I have to do is root it with cfroot and use cwm to do a nandroid backup, and than use cwm to install miui 2.3.16?

If you're not desperate then flash miui 2.3.9. Best rom I've ever used.
MIUI is already rooted. Just root whatever you're on now, make a Nandroid backup of that, and then flash miui. Btw, once you're on miui you'll never turn back

Was back on the ROM in my sig within 36 hours Tried 4 different GB MIUIs, not one gave me anything my current setup couldn't do better. Each to their own though.

Fair enough.
The thread title does however confuse me:
MIUI ROM 2.3.9 Releases [GB] & [ICS ENGLISH FULL]
miuiandroid(dot)com/community/threads/miui-rom-2-3-9-releases-gb-ics-english-full.15662/
So miui 2.3.9 for sgs2 is gb based. If i understand correctly than I have to download from this thread. But isn't installing old versions dumb? Or is 2.3.16 a major jump which introduces new bugs?
Edit:
Okay as far as I understand 2.3.9 is GB and 2.3.16 is ICS. 2.3.9 works very good while 2.3.16 is laggy.
So to get this straight:
I want to install miui 2.3.9-- The steps are:
update to latest version. (i have dukg2 i'll go to kj3)
root with cfroot
backup with nandroid
system wipe, galvik wipe, cache wipe
install miui rom with cwm
???
This is it?
Edit2:
Is there a way to store my defender savegame?
Edit3:
I have read that siyah kernel is very fast. How do i install that kernel?
Do I do all the steps liste above, and than when I am done installing miui install siyah kernel?
Turns out siyah has NTFS usb OTG feature. I now really want siyah.

Before i got samsung galaxy s2 I had a nokia 5800 for 3 years. It was like switching from a sedan to formula 1. I am still so impressed by the power of SGS2 that some minor performance improovements aren't important. Not yet at least...
Thus I am looking for eyecandy (since i can't get ICS and chrome just yet). Which as I've hear MIUI is best at.
Besides, there's no link in your sig. Otherwise i'd love to take a look at that rom. What does miui lack at btw?

Look in xda sgs2 forum is 20 normals rom and 2 miui, you can change what kernel you want, what theme you want, coz almost all is compatible each others. For miui you need special kernel, special theme, etc. Don`t wasting you time using miui
Rubbish. Opinion is one thing, misinformation is another :-|

Right. Because touchwiz is a lot sexier? Please. The miui themes are beautiful. Even stock looks stunning. But hey, I heard kids love the cartoonish look if touchwiz.

Big banner that says "SlimROM by krinyo75"... not visible on xda's app. Skinny, fast, monochrome - the way I like it (yes, I tried BAT)
What does miui lack:
- installed adfree, still got many ads.
- sammy's stock browser is so much better than MIUI's
- camera is nowhere near good enough
- flaky GPS
- laggy music player (tried it first on my SGS waybackwhen, still no better)
- limited kernel choice
- all phone numbers hyphenated after 3 digits
- don't want workarounds for an app drawer - I want an app drawer, period
Sure some of these sound petty, but horses for courses... since MIUI v4 will be based on Samsung's framework and kernel sources are now released, I'll try it again when it's done.
One thing I love about MIUI - only non-3rd party contacts app I've seen with a list view - no photos, no stupid icon next to contact name.

I don't have any of these problems. But regarding AdFree, it really is quite bad, use adaway, it's a lot better.

noob question number 2

hi guys
last night a flashed a 4.2.1 rom onto my s3
all was good
new sphere camera etc etc
but it wouldnt connect to kies - so i lost my 298 contacts!
so i flashed back to 4.1.2 official - rooted it and am all back to where I started
so, is there a way to connect to kies on a 4.2.1 rom?
if not is it ok to install the camera (zip file) with cwm flasher recovery thing on 4.1.2
sorry for being a noob - just switched over from an iphone!
android is muuuucccchhhh better!!
thanks guys
if you have a google account (which im assuming you do) all your contacts are backed upto google, so if you sign in on another rom , or even another device your contacts will show
thanks [email protected]
how about installing the sphere camera zip file on 4.1.2?
will it work?
cheers
i honestly dont know lol if you link me to the file, ill try flashing it on mine,
what rom/kernel are you on?
I believe the aosp camera just adds another camera in addition to your sammy camera.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
Kies only connects when you are on s stock ROM, you should sync your contacts with your Google account then no matter what android phone you use you will never loose your contacts.
I also think photosphere only works on 4.2.
Sent from my GT-I9300 using xda premium
If all you need is the 4.2 camera, there are lot 4.1.2 custom roms with option to install 4.2 camera (and other 4.2 stuff). Kies works on all 4.1.2 samsung based custom roms. I have tried few of them. Take a look at these.

Flashing back to stock

I couldn't seem to find the answer to this searching the forums. do I need to use odin to flash back to stock? or can I just flash the stock rom via custom recovery? I apologize if this has been answered but like I said I could not find the answer.
thanks
Joe
Top thread in the Development section.

I read through that thread... the question I have is if its possible to flash with using custom recovery or must i use odin to flash the stock rom... That thread just tells you how to use Odin ...
You could flash a stock ROM, but it will still be rooted. The only way to fully go back to stock is to use Odin and then Triangle Away.
thanks!! that was all i wanted to know. i still want to be rooted but thinking of going back to stock rom... i have tried a few roms and don't seem to get great battery life as i did with stock. I love CM 10 but I use the s-note feature constantly throughout the day and miss having it.

There's lots of cool ROM's similar to stock such as Clean, Tweaked, JellyButter, and Beans. If you want to retain stock features use touchwiz ROM's not AOSP ones such as CM.
If you click the link in my sig, there's a list of all ROM's for our phone, separated into Touchwiz and AOSP categories. If you just want a rooted stock ROM, use the one called "Stock/Root/DeOdex SCH-I605VRAMC3".

Use GMD s-pen control ( paid app but worth it) and papyrus. That's what I use and it works perfectly. You lose the ability to do math problems with s-note, but you gain customization and gestures. Works quite well together IMO.

Just use recovery to flash a stock rom...beans has a stock vramc3 .zip rom posted in the dev section. Going back to stock via Odin is only needed if you are returning the device or soft bricked.
cool... Thanks everyone for the help. I have been messing with android phones forever but have had a hard time finding the best rom for the note. i will play around a little more tonight and see what one I like best before i go back to stock rom. I liked the jelly bean rom but there were a couple of bugs that i couldn't get past. i never got liquid to flash correctly.

[Q] Stock Google Apps

I'm sure this question has been asked before, but is it at all possible for me to get some of the stock apps from vanilla android onto my S4 without flashing a new ROM? Things like messaging and contacts and the like. Just looking to get a stock feel without necessarily needing to flash a whole new rom and then go through the trial phase and then restoring all my apps.
