The title says so, wad i must be good at? I know that i must have ubuntu for compiling and creating... And what else?

Dax, have you consulted with fserve or franco, those two are the leading one's on kernel development, if you get a link to what you wanna know, pass it this way, don't have a computer just yet but having the info on hand would be nice

get LG kernel sources modify and compile using ubuntu
Does all of this require a super fast computer because the one Im fixing is an emachine with bare minimal hardware specs, aka-cheap computer

u know programming? java? c? c#?
My resources are limited, the only thing I have is this phone so any further education on Java programming is on hold....but yes I have experience with all you have said, I learned alot when I was using a G1...the only reason I ask is because I've heard word that downloading ics sources require a so called super computer, which I'm far from having, I'm lucky if the computer I do have is capable of running 2gb's of ram as far as storage is concerned, I'm only limited to the hard drive in the computer, I sold my 1tb external hard drive

Kernel is different, an average laptop would do
Yeah I figured it would be, heck wish I had a laptop....

if you only want to compile then ubuntu, compiler, linker would be enough
you must be good at C programming
and if you want to tweak to optimize, then you also need to have some understanding in micro digital electronic and also good understanding in processor or system architecture

As far as I know if you want a kernel, configure your workstation with this,or if you want CM kernel, use tuts on CM wiki. But if you want stock 2.2/2.3 LG froyo kernel, download it from LG website, then make.
After configuring repo BEFORE repo sync edit manifest.xml in WORKING_DIRECTORY and leave only kernel stuff, then modify sources and build
Kernel devs please correct me,I'm not sure at all for this one.

Well im on a nexus now. Funny that I'm still lurking here more then the nexus forums...beings that I'm still gonna be using my droidx2 for multimedia purposes at home via wifi because of the HDMI and other docks I have. Will I still be getting the update? Guessing it only goes through Verizon...maybe its a good thing. Also thanks for the help I've gotten from everyone here. This forum unlike the other device forums has always had a positive vibe and friendly to noobs

The "ota" is just used distinguish it from usb not wifi.
Im looking to put an add in craigslist and just wondering what a fair price might be for the fascinate?
What ROM are you on? I'd say a rooted Fascinate running ICS is worth a fair bit more than a stock one.

Looked on Ebay, maybe $150?
Is there a way to root it on a Mac? I had it rooted at one point then went back to stock now I no have a PC so can't use the same method.

No, I'm afraid. You could try Android apps that give you root, like VISIONary of GingerBreak.

Hmmmm...I got me an idea...
Lemme ask you MaartenXDA....how did you choose that user name? why MaartenXDA?
And yep here is how i did my username
We all have those secondary school days eh? Well that was the most awesome time during my college. And my pals refer to me as ayyu and i have kinda groupy back then along with 2 other friends. So in general 3-men ==== 3m
Oohhh. Long gone are those days. But soon after i finished college and joined university i got me the first touch flagship phone - the HTC Touch (Elf and later Elfin)
But i received the phone with sim locked...So like any other noob armored with the keyboard in an acer laptop back then, i went to war with google search. And i saw a forum called xda-developers
I thought what the heck of a name is that. But it was more important to unlock my sim, so i joined with the name ayyu3m. If it makes you guys jealous, i once worked with the renowned dsixda the creator of the android kitchen in forum xda which almost 99% of us use.
He was developing ROMs for the HTC Touch (Elfin) and i was up at some nights testing the builds and solved some bugs on me own too
Hope you all enjoyed my story which started about my username and ended with dsixda
