DT-910 Charging Stand - NFC App Question - Nokia Lumia 920

Ok, I FINALLY got my Yellow 920 today. While I was there, they had a charging stand in stock, so I cancelled my order and bought the one they had in the store. (YAY!)
How, if you look at the image attached, you will see that this:
"...stand that activates a pre-specified application via NFC while charging."
NOWHERE does it tell you HOW to do this, any ideas?
Thanks!

Found it... You touch the TOP of your phone to the base just above the LED Charge Light and you'll see the content there.

What does the app look like and what info does it show?

It allows you to auto-start an app (from a very limited and short list) when you touch the top of your phone there. I guess the intent was to start and app as you put it on the charger.
Useful? No, not really.
Cool factor to show off? Sure is!

So nothing like the android system that would auto start a car mode?

You could simply buy an NFC sticker and program it to do that
Make sure you buy formated ones though, Wp8 can NOT format them itself.

Well, it seems the app list that it will allow you to use has grown since I have installed a bunch of apps.
I am attaching the screenshot for mine (once they upload to Skydrive). LOL!

For me, a good Bedside Clock would be the ideal app for this. Such as Alarm Clock 7 or something like that.

I´m a little unhappy, cause the nfc tag is at the bottom of the station and the nfc reader, at lumia 920, is at the top of the mobile phone, so you can´t just put the mobilephone inside the chargingstation and open an app, no, you have to power on the Display, put it against the nfc tag at the bottom of the Station. After that, you can put the phone into the station and acceppt the nfc action...a Kind of useless for so much money

Yeah, I agree, it may be easier to launch an app from a Start Screen Shortcut. I would assume the reason for the tag being in that position is so that the phone is not constantly reading the tag all night during a charge. That might cause unneeded stress on the radio, and thus heat / wear-n-tear.

HTC Desk Dock Security Issue?

I picked up an HTC desk dock today and may have found a pretty substantial security flaw.
If you dock the phone while it is locked, Dock Mode will automatically enable.
From the Dock Mode home screen simply click the small X in the left hand corner and it takes you to the regular desktop. No need to enter any security code...
Basically docking the phone over rides the security measures and opens the phone to anyone who might want to use it or access your information.
Is there a setting that I am missing???
If you REMOVE it from the dock, it remains in an unlocked state and is completely vulnerable.
Can someone else test this for me please. If there is no way to work around this, its definitely going back. I cant leave this thing on my desk unsecured.
I can't help you, but what are you trying to hide from your wife?

I use app protector. Select the apps you don't want no one to access and it's done...it require a code unlock it. problem solved...

if you are leaving your phone in a location that require it to be secure with a lockscreen, I won't even leave my phone there AT ALL! people can always just take your phone and try to unlock it at their lesiure

Im not trying to hide anything from my wife, she knows better than to access my phone, tablet or computer without my consent. I do work in a very competitive market that has pressured people in the past to do such things as steal contact lists, emails, etc.
It is also a secure floor in a building where only badged employees are allowed. So the idea of the phone disappearing is not very valid. If it suddenly disappeared off of my desk, there would be a complete lock down and no one would be going anywhere until it was located.
I will definitely check in to the app protector program. Thank you!
FYI, this dock: http://www.cellularfactory.com/det.jsp?d=51136&c=765263 doesn't trigger dock mode automatically, costs less than the HTC (currently $20) and has enough clearance to allow you to dock the phone in a case, as long as it's not too thick for the USB connection to plug in.
Oh, and for a few $ more, they have this one: http://www.cellularfactory.com/det.jsp?d=51135&c=765263, which also charges a spare battery.
Visidon app lock is also a cool facial recognition app that allows you to lock specific apps.
Spoke to three different people at HTC today, one of which was from an engineering department of some sort. He was shocked to be able to replicate exactly what I have described here.
I think they will try to figure out a fix for this in the form of a software update of some sort.
In the mean time, time to go back to just plugging it in to the USB cable.
Good to know a fix for this issue is on the way.

[Q] NFC intermittent

Hi,
Has anyone else experienced intermittent NFC funcionality on the 920?
For a while the NFC just doesn't work, and comes back after some minutes.
I have a lumia 920 and a lumia 720 and both phones are experiencing the same issue.
Anyone else?

I think what you are experiencing is the NFC system going into sort of a sleep mode. Then when you use it it takes a few moments for it to pick up the signal from the tag or other device to wake it up. It also drains your battery horribly to leave it on. i would suggest turning it on only when you are about to use it. Then it should be active and ready to receive. You also could be seeing some badly programmed tags or cheap tags that do not have the correct level of RF output.

I see no difference in battery life when turning it on and leaving it like that.
I don't think the problem is the tags, because I cannot pair with other phones neither while it has the issue.

two brand new phones with the same issue? I don't think it's the hardware itself.
Also, I found more posts about the same issue on the nokia forums, maybe they need to fix something on the software side.

yes, I have 1232.5962.1314.0001
I can also vouch that keeping Tap+Send on doesn't affect my battery life at all. Also, I've noticed on the 920, it's very iffy on the location. You have to touch the sensor to perfection (which annoys me with the charging stand) for it to function. Maybe that's the intermittent behavior you're experiencing.

I can say that the NFC transmitter on this phone works at medium distances, I have several NFC tags scattered in my desk, and sometimes I put things on top of them (like my wallet) and if I place the phone on top of the wallet it interacts with the NFC tag beneth the wallet, and that's like 7cm apart from it.
when the issue appears, no matter how close I put it, it just doesn't work.
I'm planning to put the phone in Test mode using nokia care suite and test the behavior for a while to see if something interesing comes up, kind of difficult because this happens randomly.
My NFC works great, except when I'm sharing something between 2 lumia 920s, sometimes it takes a few tries to get the phones to notice eachother.

Smartband Question

Hi all...thinking about getting a Smartband just have a quick question...
does it have to be connected to and near the phone all the time? So for example if I leave the phone in the house and go out in the garden do some stuff and come back to the phone will it connect again and sync everything that I have done whilst away from the phone?
Pretty much a deal breaker for me if it doesnt so would really like to know
Thanks!
It carries on working when unconnected to the phone, don't worry. When it reconnects, it syncs previous data.
Example, I turn my phone off at night and the band tracks sleep data and syncs in the morning when I turn the phone on.
The only issue I have (not with the band but with the Lifelog app) is that every two days or so, it appears as if it no longer collects data and shows no updates in the timeline. The first time this happened I tried all kinds of things to get it working again and ended up factory resetting. it still wouldn't log anything. However, I have discovered that after a period of time, the data miraculously appears and everything has been logged. I think this is either a bug which an app update will remedy, or maybe something server side with Sony.
Either way, if you see stuff not appearing in your timeline, don't worry, it will show up later.
Great thanks for the reply...now going to see where I can get the best deal on one!

I did not dry it after shower. I take it off only for charging.
I didn't test it underwater yet, but it should be fine according to Sony:
Your SmartBand is waterproof and dust resistant in compliance with the Ingress Protection (IP) rating IP58, as explained in the table below.
This specific IP rating means that your SmartBand is dust resistant and is protected against low pressure water stream as well as against the effects of immersion for 30 minutes in fresh (non-saline) water up to 3 metres deep.
You can use your SmartBand:
in dusty environments, for example, on a windy beach.
when your fingers are wet.
in some extreme weather conditions, for example, when it’s snowing or raining.
in fresh (non-saline) water depths of 3 metres or less, for example, in a fresh water lake or river.
in a chlorinated swimming pool.

Have you installed the software? You can only use one application at a time. To activate it press the button once and tap on the smartband on top of it, not the button. You have to press it before the three LEDs flashes.

After pressing the button once you have about 15 seconds to make a gesture, like tapping on top of the band to start the musicplayer or tapping twice to play the next song.

Might have something to do with it only being used as a charging port, as opposed to a data and charging port.
Though honestly, I don't really see how water could get inside the band anyways- creates a pretty decent seal.

Water can go in usb port but that won't harm your device.
It's just like jack on top of your Z1/Z2 - no matter it's opened - it's waterproof.
You can go swimming with smartband without any worries, it'll be OK.
That's the whole idea, swimming, running, showering, sleeping with it... - That device should monitor your life, I guess that's why they pick name LifeLog...
I didn't believe in this thing, now my brand new smartwatch sleeps in a drawer while I'm using smartband - it's 10 times better and useful then smartwatch...

Just make sure its level
I have to tilt mine downward at a 45° angle (screen up & towards the tv).
Also I couldn't get it to work with my Comcast boxes. I think the reason it won't connect to the boxes is because it uses the power button to sync. These boxes don't power off. They have a power button, but a press does nothing, and a long press reboots them. Anyone else run into this, or have a work around?

I agree, the way that it works makes it virtually unusable. Tried on 3 different TVs and the same with every one. They were all different brands so that was not the issue.
I couldn't get it to control my LG TV, but it worked fine on my nephew's Samsung. Now it works if I'm closer. Maybe my case is the problem.
I think because it's on top it has to be pointed directly at it, as to where my Flex, I could have the touchscreen facing me and it still works. Belive IIRC goes off the camera. Worked like a charm!
Weird. Mine works great. I programmed every device in the house, office, and a couple of friends houses. One Samsung Blu Ray player I had to use the learning feature, but everything else just worked.
mine is hit or miss, the one of the note worked better but IMO for me being too lazy to get the remote and use my phone I am ok with hitting the button a few times to make sure tv pops on.

Top of the camera has two holes. The pin size one is probably a mic, the bigger one I'm guessing is IR.

I have a case. So the one on the g3 is on the camera as well? Because i see what looks like a it blaster on top of my phone. Would be why it would need to be pointed right at the TV I assume.

I think that's the issue. Luckily I can use their app to control the box over a network.
It only sucks for me if I forget to angle it up...if you angle it above the device you are trying to change channel with I haven't had an issue.
Coming from the G2, I think the G3 IR blaster is a bit more finicky. I haven't had any problems syncing it to any of my devices. But I do need to be pointed nearly directly at the device. I think this is because the IR led is recessed. If you ever look at any of the remotes around your house, most of them have a IR led that protrudes out from the remote. Based on this logic, depending on the case you could see more interference..
I'm coming from the HTC ONE...which worked perfectly...now I have to have it pointed directly at the device to work.
Sent from my G³ via Xparent Blue Tapatalk²
I dont understand you guys, IR means inferred which means that remote and device need to have clear view of each other. RF is radio frequency which means remote and device do Not need a clear line of sight meaning it can bounce off of objects to reach device

Is there a DEFINITIVE GPS fix?

My AT&T H820 LG G5 is out of warranty and LG won't honor any repair since I bought it on eBay. I have tried 2 band aid fixes - shimming underneath the metal mesh damper gasket and also shimming underneath the motherboard where the 3 gold pins touch along with bending pins upward. Both "repairs" lasted a week. So is there a definitive and gauranteed fix? What is LG doing, just replacing the metal mesh and damper gasket and then it fails again? I also noticed that my metal mesh damper gasket is a different appearance than what I have seen photos of online, as if there is a revised part. My GPS is now completely non-functioning.
Anybody? Surely there has to be a lasting repair and known cause.
Seems not. I have given up, aside from occasionally popping back here to see if anyone's found something new. I have taken to using an old phone as a bluetooth GPS transmitter. It's a pain, but it works.
Unfortunately LG still uses those same old crappy useless springs that it did several years ago, and they are not very flexible hence why it fails and then fails again. I think putting items underneath will only bend it even further slightly raising them would have been a better fix and then firmly attaching the case. Probably too late for you. The only other option would be solder in some more but I haven't seen the board for ths device.
Would it be possible to use the GPS antenna from my bootloop G4?

Sure. On the phone with working GPS you want to share, install btGPS from Meowsbox, and get the licence key too (£1 if I recall correctly).
On the G5, install Bluetooth GPS from GG MobLab (which is free and fully functioning).
Once both apps are installed, you just have to pair the devices via bluetooth, enable the transmitter on the old phone, and finally select the old phone in the dropdown on the G5 and press connect.
Is it annoying? Yeah, a bit, but actually I can keep my old phone (Samsung S3) hidden away in the car and it still gives decent reception. And because the screen's off on that device, it lasts for hours without killing the battery.
HTH.

Ahh - yes, good point. I also had to set Bluetooth GPS as the mock location app. Since that's the free app, I'd install that first and see if it can be configured. Also you can test out the transmitter app for (IIRC) 10 minutes before it dies in good crippleware form. Plenty of time to make sure it's working though.
Although... I'm using Android 7.0 on my H860 and mock locations is working fine
I ended up taking a chance and dropped a very small amount of solder on each of the spring contacts everyone keeps talking about lifting or putting a small piece of plastic underneath. In the past lifting the spring helped for a month or so before it started to not seek GPS again.
Yes, I've tried the whole APN update, using GPS Toolbox (which I've had before LG G5), rooted, etc but believe too this is simply a hardware issue on the contacts.
As far as the soldering is concerned, if you're near sighted, you won't need a magnifying glass but the contacts are very small so a very steady hand is a must and of course some soldering skill is required. I'll try to take a macro shot of how it looks this weekend. So far after a month it's been rock solid.
The 3 golden pins are from the volume control. The internet has been spread with fake information relevant to fixing the LG G5's GPS Fix as I also think that opening it up and closing it back down and so on just reseats the contact from the real place for a little while See the most useful marked answer for further explaination: https://nl.ifixit.com/Answers/View/394237/GPS+Not+working+well+at+all
