Friend gave me a new S2 today, never been turned on or activated. Didn't ask any questions.
So my question is, should I unlock it? Is unlocking it free?
Whats the easiest method to root the phone with?
What kernel & rom would you suggest using?
P.S. I'm not going to be using this as a 'phone' I'll be using it more for entertainment purposes like gaming and videos & such, looking for a rom with the most amount of free ram & internal memory available.
Thanks.

You can unlock it with helroz's app called galaxy_s unlock on the play store, but before you use it backup your efs folder.
For the rom and kernel i think is the best check my sig

Do i have to back up the files you're talking about? I've yet to turn the phone on yet so everything is brand new. And the rom is called rootbox, and the kernel is dorimanx 7.10 correct?

Maybe you should have asked some of these "big questions" when your friend randomely gave you a brand new £500 phone.
Here, this is what I'd do. Carefully remove the back cover of the phone, making sure not to bend or snap the plastic, then place the phone screen down on a soft surface (such as a mousemat). Proceed to take the battery out without damaging the dock connectors and place it down next to the phone. Now this is the tricky part. Look for a micro sd card stored secretively in a hidden compartment below the SIM card storage and behind the battery. Upon reading it, if it contains the real name, location and corresponding code name of hundreds of undercover secret agents in the field I suggest you give the phone back to your friend... no questions asked.

LOL. You totally misunderstood his post (he was joking...) but this exposes that you're asking your questions in the wrong forum anyways.
This is the forum for the GT-I9100 - a GSM phone that doesn't work on any CDMA networks. (such as the Sprint network that Boost runs on)
The Epic 4G Touch has a different forum: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1281

Long story short, I got this really big deal out of a very kind man on ebay of whom did not know the value of his phone, and sold his SPH-D710 for $130 in Mint Condition with an Otter Box!!
Problem is, this phone's loudspeaker and earpiece do not work.
So as I look through ebay, I see there are no loudspeaker or earpiece parts for the SPH-D710, only for the i9100 which makes me believe that it might work since they are after all the same phone only difference is one is GSM and the other one is CDMA.
The sellers of these parts take too long to respond so I decided to ask the community, will the loudspeaker and earpiece parts of the i9100 work on the SPH-D710?
Thanks in advance.

Nah, its quite simple to fix I've opened up several phones before. Its located right past the middle cover. And the pieces wont cost more than $10 each.
I'd think it would be better to ask this in the SPH-D710 forums.

Are you trying from the XDA app? Unfortunately, the app won't link to the overall device forums. Try from a computer.
Or, from the XDA app, click the "Forums" tab, and scroll until you find "Samsung Epic 4G Touch".
To make your life a little easier, here's the Q&A section from that forum.

The forum I actually linked you to was the forum for the D710. Don't believe me?
Type into Google: (which really should have been your first step)
"D710 XDA"
It will lead you back to where I linked you in the first place.
Of course, I just checked your post history... you posted in the Epic 4G forum - NOT the Epic 4G Touch forum. Those are two different phones. The Epic 4G is the D700, and the Epic 4G Touch is the D710. So of course the mod closed your thread in the forum you posted. You didn't post in the one I told you to.
Hey guys!
I just heard that there is a fault/defect or even a backdoor in Jelly Bean.
Apparently there is a link, somewhere, in the software that takes you to a website, to get your whole phone reset/formatted.
Is there something to this, or is it a rumor, someone is just swatting around?
I, personally, don't believe this, because I've been using JB, since it has been available on the GS 3, but there are people believing this..
Thanks for helpful answers!

No, I wouldn't.. I already checked and found nothing, that's why I'm asking
Not to be disrespectful, or anything, but I ain't stupid, I just want to know, if there is something like this in our JB ROMs, according to family members, we (I) have to go to Samsung.com and download the newest firmware, which gets rid of this bug/backdoor/virus, etc. ... What ever this is supposed to be..
Still, thanks for answering..

Ok. It goes like this. You know how there are dialer codes that make the phone do certain things? Like if you go to the dialer on most phones and punch in *#06#* it'll pop up the IMEI in a dialog box. There's a dialer code to format the phone without warning you. The issue was that the browser would automatically parse a telephone code, so if the website redirected you to a link that had tel://*the dialer code for reformatting*, the browser would paste it into the dialer and the dialer would automatically "dial"/run it. Kind of a stupid, "why didn't I think of that?" trick if you ask me.

hi i bought locked in calgary galaxy note i717 (already have cynogenmod version 10.0.0-RC0-quincyatt & paranoid android version 2.21)
how can i find carrier of my i717
I don't understand your question. Are you asking what carrier the phone is locked to? Model number under battery will tell you that? Are you asking how to unlock phone for any carrier? I believe with Canadian Notes it is better to use a third party unlocking service (like from ebay) to get the phone unlocked if it already isn't. But on the other hand I think some Canadian Notes come unlocked from factory. If the phone is unlocked, maybe you just need to enter the APN for your carrier.
For future reference, questions should be posted in the questions and answers section.
OP yes please explain your question and this has been moved to the Q&A. Thank You
Go to www.samfirmware.com and you can find the stock carrier rom. You can flash it with Odin software and a pc and the charging cable.
When you flash it your phone won't be rooted anymore.

Well Sir, your jokes or comments are not helping....there is a right way and wrong way to provide assistance and your way is not right.
If it bothers you so much that individuals are asking and looking for assistance, then stay out of the Q&A threads. Now I do not mind showing members assistance but bottom line they have to figure it out them self's. Teach them, not bash them.
Again if I see you bashing instead of providing, Stand By Sir. Thank You

the phone which i bought was locked to roger. i flash last night with stock rom
now i have 2 question
a how to carrier unlock galaxy note i717r
b which rom should i flash my galaxy note so i work with mobilicity

You have to get an unlock code. That is something you purchase from ebay.
The Rogers rom is ok, but you have to flash a modem. Any modem compatable with t-mobile will work for you.
Dear just unlocked my phone
only one problem is left which is to used with mobilicity
so can u send me the link to get flash with a modem so my phone can run with mobilicity

Hi everyone!
I have a quick question for you noble geeks.
My girlfriend came home yesterday with a brand new S3, and when I look at it, it turns
out it came preinstalled with ROM Manager (which needs root to work). The phone was
not rooted, but I had no idea that Samsung put this app on their phones before shipping.
Anyone know why they do this? For a minute I was worried she had paid for a pre owned
phone.

just me installing it on her previous phone, and when she logged in on her new one

Going by your other post you are already unlocked and rooted. That is the main step you needed to accomplish.
Before doing anything, do research. There are guides everywhere on how to flash roms. YouTube has hundreds of videos that have step by step instructions on what to do.
Research so you have an idea of what is going on, then come back here and ask questions you have. It makes everything a lot easier for you and for people helping if you have a general idea of what is going on.

Honestly you need to look up everything you can about flashing because the more you know the less chance you have of screwing your phone up. Research, read, read, read, if you have questions ask them, then flash or do whatever you want to do.
You can ask for help but you at least need to do your research and reading, otherwise it makes you look lazy.

If that's what you are trying to do, the other thread you posted in has everything you need. Go back there and actually read the information. To me, it looks like you want to be spoon fed everything. That isn't going to be useful down the road when you screw something up and have no idea what to do.
